Determination of phosphorus speciation in dairy manure using XRD and XANES spectroscopy

The competitive and selective adsorption of heavy metals by struvite in the Pb(II)-Cd(II)-Zn(II) composite system and its environmental significance

The prevalence of struvite and other phosphate minerals in eutrophic environments has a significant effect on the transport and transformation of environmental heavy metals, but their competitive immobilization characteristics and mechanisms for heavy metals remain unclear. Three different sources of struvite (BS, CSHS, and CSS) were obtained respectively by biosynthesis and chemical synthesis with or without humic acid to investigate their competitive immobilization characteristics and mechanism of heavy metals in the Pb(II)-Cd(II)-Zn(II) composite system. The results showed that the immobilization of heavy metals by struvite is physico-chemical adsorption and the affinity (in descending order) is Pb(II) >> Cd(II)/Zn(II). Cd(II) promotes the immobilization of Pb(II)/Zn(II) by BS. The order of the selective strength by struvite for Pb(II) is BS >> CSS ≈ CSHS. The study indicates that the difference between struvite holding heavy metal ions is related to the material composition and heavy metal types, and BS shows best selective immobilization for Pb(II) in the Pb(II)-Cd(II)-Zn(II) composite system. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the environmental geochemical role and eco-environmental effects of struvite.

P K-Edge XANES Calculations of Mineral Standards: Exploring the Potential of Theoretical Methods in the Analysis of Phosphorus Speciation

Phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is a technique routinely employed in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phosphorus speciation in many scientific fields. The data analysis is, however, often performed in a qualitative manner, relying on linear combination fitting protocols or simple comparisons between the experimental data and the spectra of standards, and little quantitative structural and electronic information is thus retrieved. Herein, we report a thorough theoretical investigation of P K-edge XANES spectra of NaH₂PO₄·H₂O, AlPO₄, α-Ti(HPO₄)₂·H₂O, and FePO₄·2H₂O showing excellent agreement with the experimental data. We find that different coordination shells of phosphorus, up to a distance of 5-6 Å from the photoabsorber, contribute to distinct features in the XANES spectra. This high structural sensitivity enables P K-edge XANES spectroscopy to even distinguish between nearly isostructural crystal phases of the same compound. Additionally, we provide a rationalization of the pre-edge transitions observed in the spectra of α-Ti(HPO₄)₂·H₂O and FePO₄·2H₂O through density of states calculations. These pre-edge transitions are found to be enabled by the covalent mixing of phosphorus s and p orbitals and titanium or iron d orbitals, which happens even though neither metal ion is directly bound to phosphorus in the two systems.

Liquid Anaerobic Digestate as Sole Nutrient Source in Soilless Horticulture-Or Spiked With Mineral Nutrients for Improved Plant Growth

Digestate from biogas production high in plant-available macro- and micro-nutrients could replace mineral fertilizer in protected (soilless) horticulture. Previous uses of digestate have shown that low concentrations of plant-available phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) may be limiting factors for growth when using digestate as the sole fertilizer. In this study, digestate collected from a municipal biogas plant in Sweden was nitrified in a moving-bed biofilm reactor prior to its use as fertilizer. A greenhouse pot trial with pak choi grown in peat-based growing medium was established to assess the (i) macro- and micro-nutrient availability in the digestate, with particular focus on P and S and (ii) the effect of amending the digestate solution with nutrients considered to be lacking [P, S, magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), boron (B), and molybdenum (Mo)]. The results showed that plants fertilized with raw digestate suffered from S and B deficiency and early P deficiency. Supplementing the digestate with nutrients originating from mineral salts resulted in sufficient plant tissue concentrations of all elements except S. The marketable yield was similar to that achieved using standard mineral fertilizer and the dry matter yield was 17% higher. In the light of the present results, the use of nitrified digestate in soilless plant production seems like a fruitful way forward to recycle organic nutrients from waste streams. In the case where a strict organic protocol is not needed, amendment with inorganic nutrients may be a way to increase the utilization of organically derived nutrients.

Hepatocyte growth factor administration increases bone soluble phosphate and alters bone chemical structure in diabetic hypertensive rats

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a novel potential therapy for improving bone health in patients with type II diabetes and hypertension, but its effect on the bone molecular structure is not revealed yet. Here, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used to explore the effects elicited by HGF on the bone chemical structure. This study assessed local calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) coordination of diabetic hypertensive rat bones, each with and without HGF treatment. Results revealed that HGF has significant effects on Ca and P coordination chemistry as confirmed by presence of more soluble phosphates in the HGT-treated groups. Data indicated that treated bones have a poorly developed phosphate structure as evidenced by drastic drop in post-edge shoulder in P L2,3-edge compared to diabetic hypertensive and diabetic control bone. Presence of soluble Ca and P, products of bone resorption, with HGF treatment suggests unbalanced bone resorption and formation.

Synergistic effects of anionic polyacrylamide and gypsum to control phosphorus losses from biogas slurry applied soils

Excessive application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to the agriculture soil can lead to the P loss to the aquatic ecosystem. Three soils from different land use (tea, paddy, and vegetable soils) were treated with biogas slurry (BS) at rate of 79.8 kg ha^-1, anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) at rate of 12.5, 25 and 50 kg ha^-1, Gypsum (Gy) at rate of 5t ha^-1, and the control (Ck) without treatment, to control P losses in a laboratory batch experiment. The soil solution was analyzed for total P (TP), dissolved reactive P (DRP) and total dissolved P (TDP). Particulate P (PP) and dissolved unreactive P (DURP) were calculated by subtracting DRP from TP and TDP, respectively. The DRP was within a range of 68-98% of TP whereas PP varied in a range of 2-32% of TP and DURP was within a range of 0.1-19% of TP, depending on soil types and different treatments. The addition of PAM at a high rate and Gy together on the soil after BS application reduced the release of TP by 54, 46, and 51% and that of DRP by 61, 49, and 53% for tea, paddy and vegetable soils, respectively. However, the application of BS with PAM alone promoted the release of DRP by 77, 86, 70% for tea, paddy, and vegetable soils, respectively. This study suggests that the synergic application of PAM and Gy on soils after BS addition can be a good strategy to reduce P losses.

Optimization of Data Processing Minimizes Impact of Self-Absorption on Phosphorus Speciation Results by P K-Edge XANES

Bulk soil phosphorus speciation by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using fluorescence yield-mode measurements is an important tool for phosphorus research because of the low soil P contents. However, when measuring in fluorescence mode, increasing the concentration of the absorbing atom can dampen the XAS spectral features because of self-absorption and affect the linear combination (LC) fitting results. To reduce the self-absorption for samples of high P contents, thick boron nitride diluted samples are produced, yet the effects of self-absorption on P speciation results via LC fitting of P K-edge XANES spectroscopy, and the possible benefits of data processing optimization are unknown. Toward this end, we produced a series of ternary standard mixtures (calcium-iron-aluminum phosphates) and an example soil sample both diluted using boron nitride over a range from 1 to ~900 mmol kg−1 for the soil sample and up to ~6000 mmol kg−1 for the standard mixture. We show that by optimizing background subtraction and normalization values, consistent results with less than 10% error can be obtained for samples with up to 300 mmol kg−1 P. Our results highlight the applicability of optimized P K-edge XANES fitting across a wide range of concentrations encountered in natural environments.

Organic wastes as alternative sources of phosphorus for plant nutrition in a calcareous soil

Recycled organic wastes (OW) can be a valuable P source; however, their P-fertilising capacity is still poorly known. In this study, we selected three anaerobic digestates [wastewater sludge (D₁), winery sludge (D₂), and bovine-slurry/energy crops (BD)] and two animal effluents [bovine slurry (BS) and swine slurry (SS)] to test their P-release and P-fertilising capacities via sequential chemical extraction (SCE), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ³¹P-nuclear magnetic resonance (³¹P NMR). Subsequently, the three digestates (30 mg P kg^-1 of soil) were compared for the release of Olsen-P during a soil incubation and for plant-P apparent recovery (ARF) in a pot experiment using ryegrass (112 days) in a soil with poorly available-P (Olsen-P < 5 mg kg^-1), under a non-limiting N environment. The amount of labile-P (H₂O + NaHCO₃), as determined from SCE, related well to the Olsen-P following OW addition to the soil. It was shown via ³¹P NMR spectroscopy that orthophosphate was the leading P-form in highly P-releasing OW. The amount of labile-P, however, was affected by soil adsorption, thereby reducing plant-P uptake. The plant-P ARF (%) showed that the recycled P-sources were clustered in highly (BD and SS: ≈20%), intermediately (D₁ and BS: ≈15%), and poorly performing OWs (D₂: ≈10%) vs. chemical P-source (P-chem: 20%). Therefore, only BD and SS were effective alternatives to P-chem; however, the other OW can be efficient P-sources in soils with higher Olsen-P. Thus, crop fertilisation can be tailored on a P-basis by SCE as a function of soil adsorption capacity and on an N-basis according to the demand.

Non-airtight fermentation of sugar beet pulp with anaerobically digested dairy manure to provide acid-rich hydrolysate for mixotrophic microalgae cultivation

Non-airtight fermentation of lignocellulosic agricultural residues with animal wastes is an emerging pretreatment method to produce acid-rich substrates in two-phase anaerobic digestion. Acid-rich hydrolysate could be an excellent feedstock for cultivating microalgae, therefore, the feasibility of a two-step process combining non-airtight fermentation of sugar beet pulp with anaerobically digested dairy manure and mixotrophic microalgae species Chlorella cultivation in the hydrolysate was explored in this study. The hydrolysis and acidification process of 8-day non-airtight fermentation produced up to 8.1 g/L volatile fatty acids under mesophilic condition. Microalgal growths in diluted hydrolysates were compared with that in diluted digested dairy manure (DDM) as a control using experimental data and fitted logistic models. Chlorella grown in the 10-fold diluted DDM showed an exponential decay, while Chlorella cultured in the 3-fold diluted hydrolysate demonstrated the best performance in terms of biomass density, which reached 2.17 g/L within a short period of time.

Inhibition of phosphorus sorption on calcite by dairy manure-sourced DOC

In confined animal feeding operations, such as dairies, manure is amended to soils at high rates leading to increases in P and organic matter in the soils. Phosphorus reacts with soil-Ca to form Ca-P minerals, which controls P availability for leaching and transport through the watershed. In this research, the effects of manure sourced dissolved organic matter (DOM) on P sorption on calcite were measured at different reaction times and concentrations. Reactions were monitored in 1% and 10% manure-to-water extract solutions spiked with P. When manure-DOM was present, a significant reduction in P sorption occurred (2-90% absolute decrease) compared to samples without manure-DOM. The greatest decrease occurred in the samples reacted in the 10% manure solution. XANES spectroscopic analysis showed that at 1% manure solution, a Ca-P phase similar to hydroxyapatite formed. In the calcite samples reacted in the 10% manure solution, K-edge XANES spectroscopy revealed that P occurred as a Ca-Mg-P phase instead of the less soluble hydroxyapatite-like phase. Results from this study suggest that in manure-amended calcareous soils, increased DOM from manure will decrease P sorption capacity and increase the overall P concentration in solution, which will increase the mobility of P and subsequently pose greater risks for impairment of surface water quality.

Transformation of Phosphorus during (Hydro)thermal Treatments of Solid Biowastes: Reaction Mechanisms and Implications for P Reclamation and Recycling

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all organisms, thus playing unique and critical roles at the food-energy-water nexus. Most P utilized by human activities eventually converges into various solid biowastes, such as crop biomass, animal manures, and sewage sludges. Therefore, integration of efficient P recovery practices into solid biowaste management will not only significantly reduce the dependence on limited geological P resources but also reduce P runoff and related water contamination issues associated with traditional waste management strategies. This study reviews the applications of (hydro)thermal techniques for the treatment of solid biowastes, which can greatly facilitate P recovery in addition to waste volume reduction, decontamination, and energy recovery. Research showed that P speciation (including molecular moiety, complexation state, and mineralogy) can experience significant changes during (hydro)thermal treatments, and are impacted by treatment techniques and conditions. Changes in P speciation and overall properties of the products can alter the mobility and bioavailability of P, and subsequent P reclamation and recycling efficiency of the treatment products. This review summarizes recent progresses in this direction, identifies the challenges and knowledge gaps, and provides a foundation for future research efforts targeting at sustainable management of nutrient-rich biowastes.

Using FTIR-photoacoustic spectroscopy for phosphorus speciation analysis of biochars

In the last decade, numerous studies have evaluated the benefits of biochar for improving soil quality. The purposes of the current study were to use Fourier transform infrared-photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) to analyse P species in biochar and to determine the effect of pyrolysis temperature on P speciation. The photoacoustic detector has a range of advantages for the very dark biochar samples in comparison to more traditional reflectance or transmission FTIR detectors. The spectra turned out to be more informative in the regions with P vibrations for biochar produced at temperatures above 400°C, where most of the remaining organic compounds were aromatic and therefore not overlapping with the P vibrations. For biochars produced from the solid fraction of digestate from biogas production, an increase in the pyrolysis temperature led to the formation of a large variety of P species. Hydroxylapatite and tricalcium phosphate were the most dominant P species in the mid to high temperature range (600-900°C), while at 1050°C apatite, iron phosphates, variscite and calcium phosphates were identified. However, the changes in P speciation in biochars produced from bone meal at different temperatures were smaller than in the biochars from digestate. Hydroxylapatite and calcium phosphates were identified in biochar produced at all temperatures, while there was some indication of struvite formation.

A review on the role of organic inputs in maintaining the soil carbon pool of the terrestrial ecosystem

Among the numerous sources of greenhouse gases, emissions of CO2 are considerably affected by changes in the extent and type of land use, e.g., intensive agriculture, deforestation, urbanization, soil erosion, or wetland drainage. As a feasible option to control emissions from the terrestrial ecosystems, the scientific community has explored the possibility of enhancing soil carbon (C) storage capacity. Thus, restoration of damaged lands through conservation tillage, crop rotation, cover cropping, reforestation, sub-soiling of compacted lands, sustainable water management practices, and organic manuring are the major antidotes against attenuation of soil organic C (SOC) stocks. In this research, we focused on the effect of various man-made activities on soil biotic organics (e.g., green-, farm-yard manure, and composts) to understand how C fluxes from various sources contribute to the establishment of a new equilibrium in the terrestrial ecosystems. Although such inputs substitute a portion of chemical fertilizers, they all undergo activities that augment the rate and extent of decay to deplete the SOC bank. Here, we provide perspectives on the balancing factors that control the mineralization rate of organic matter. Our arguments are placed in the background of different land use types and their impacts on forests, agriculture, urbanization, soil erosion, and wetland destruction.

Biogas digestates affect crop P uptake and soil microbial community composition

Fermentation residues from biogas production are known as valuable organic fertilisers. This study deals with the effect of cattle slurry, co-digested cattle slurry, co-digested energy crops and mineral fertilisers on the activity and composition of soil microbiota. Furthermore, the effect of solid-liquid separation as a common pre-treatment of digestate was tested. The fertilising effects were analysed in an 8-week pot experiment on loamy sand using two crops, Amaranthus cruentus and Sorghum bicolor. Amaranth, as a crop with significantly higher P uptake, triggered stress for occurring soil microbes and thereby caused a reduction of microbial biomass C in the soil. Irrespective of the crop, microbial basal respiration and metabolic quotient were higher with the digestates than with the untreated slurry or the mineral treatments. Community level physiological profiles with MicroResp showed considerable differences among the treatments, with particularly strong effects of solid-liquid separation. Similar results were also found on a structural level (PCR-DGGE). Alkaline phosphatase gene analyses revealed high sensitivity to different fertilisation regimes.

Standard Protocol and Quality Assessment of Soil Phosphorus Speciation by P K-Edge XANES Spectroscopy

Phosphorus (P) in soils is most often bound as phosphate to one or more of the following four elements or compounds: calcium, aluminum, iron, and soil organic matter. A promising method for direct P speciation in soils is synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the K-edge of P. However, the quality of this method is debated controversially, partly because a standard protocol for reproducible spectrum deconvolution is lacking and minor modifications of the applied deconvolution procedure can lead to considerable changes in the P speciation results. On the basis of the observation that appropriate baseline correction and edge-step normalization are crucial for correct linear combination (LC) fitting results, we established a standard protocol for the deconvolution and LC fitting of P K-edge XANES spectra. We evaluated the quality of LC fits obtained according to this standard protocol with 16 defined dilute (2 mg P g(-1)) ternary mixtures of aluminum phosphate, iron phosphate, hydroxyapatite, and phytic acid in a quartz matrix. The LC fitting results were compared with the contribution of the different P compounds to total P in the various mixtures. Compared to using a traditional LC fitting procedure, our standard protocol reduced the fitting error by 6% (absolute). However, P portions smaller than 5% should be confirmed with other methods or excluded from the P speciation results. A publicly available database of P K-edge XANES reference spectra was initiated.

Effect of aging on phosphorus speciation in surface deposit of a vertical flow constructed wetland

This study was conducted to determine phosphorus (P) species captured in a vertical-flow constructed wetland (VFCW) system combining a trickling filter followed by FeCl3 injection for phosphate coagulation. Suspended solids (SS) thus formed accumulated over time at the VFCW surface and transformed into a sludge deposit layer, which was shown to concentrate most of the P captured in the system. In order to investigate the effect of aging on P species, representative SS and sludge samples were taken from a wastewater treatment plant that had been in operation for 8 years and analyzed using P fractionation, solution (31)P NMR spectroscopy, and P and Fe K-edge XANES spectroscopy. A partial mineralization of organic matter was shown by comparing organic carbon contents of SS and sludge materials. Chemical fractionations combined with P and Fe K-edge XANES spectroscopy showed that P was predominantly bound to iron within both samples in the form of ferric phosphate, rather than adsorbed onto ferric oxyhydroxide. Calcium-bound P was more significantly observed in sludge than in SS, suggesting that aging induced the recombination of part of the organic and iron-bound P species into calcium-bound forms, as a possible consequence of the partial mineralization of organic matter.

Acidification of animal slurry--a review

Ammonia emissions are a major problem associated with animal slurry management, and solutions to overcome this problem are required worldwide by farmers and stakeholders. An obvious way to minimize ammonia emissions from slurry is to decrease slurry pH by addition of acids or other substances. This solution has been used commonly since 2010 in countries such as Denmark, and its efficiency with regard to the minimization of NH3 emissions has been documented in many studies. Nevertheless, the impact of such treatment on other gaseous emissions during storage is not clear, since the studies performed so far have provided different scenarios. Similarly, the impact of the soil application of acidified slurry on plant production and diffuse pollution has been considered in several studies. Also, the impact of acidification upon combination with other slurry treatment technologies (e.g. mechanical separation, anaerobic digestion …) is important to consider. Here, a compilation and critical review of all these studies has been performed in order to fully understand the global impact of slurry acidification and assess the applicability of this treatment for slurry management.

Innovative methods in soil phosphorus research: A review

Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable element for all life on Earth and, during the past decade, concerns about the future of its global supply have stimulated much research on soil P and method development. This review provides an overview of advanced state-of-the-art methods currently used in soil P research. These involve bulk and spatially resolved spectroscopic and spectrometric P speciation methods (1 and 2D NMR, IR, Raman, Q-TOF MS/MS, high resolution-MS, NanoSIMS, XRF, XPS, (µ)XAS) as well as methods for assessing soil P reactions (sorption isotherms, quantum-chemical modeling, microbial biomass P, enzymes activity, DGT, ³³P isotopic exchange, ¹⁸O isotope ratios). Required experimental set-ups and the potentials and limitations of individual methods present a guide for the selection of most suitable methods or combinations.

Tracking the transformations of mesoporous microspheres of calcium silicate hydrate at the nanoscale upon ibuprofen release: a XANES and STXM study

XANES and STXM imaging of mesoporous CSH microspheres indicate that amorphous silica provide aggregation site of HAp, and amorphous CaCO₃ was formed during CSH biomineralization.

Effect of Livestock Slurry Ozonation and Separation on pH, Particles, and Phosphate

Applying slurry to arable land as fertilizer increases the risk of phosphorus (P) runoff and thereby increases the risk of eutrophication. Solid-liquid separation can reduce the excess application of P, and this study focused on the use of ozonation as an alternative chemical pretreatment for separation to improve P separation efficiency. Sow and cattle slurries were separated by screw press and flocculation+filtration. The screw press and flocculation liquid fractions and raw slurries were treated with no ozone or with low-, medium-, or high-ozone doses and then separated by centrifugation. The pH, particle size distribution, dry matter, and dissolved phosphate (PO) concentrations were measured. For separations without ozonation, pH increased by 0.15 to 0.87 pH units, and correlation analysis showed that the dissolved PO concentration decreased with increasing pH and particle removal efficiency. During ozonation, pH increased, and a shift in particle size distribution in the liquid fraction combined with an improved dry matter separation indicated particle aggregation. Ozonation thus affected the parameters found to affect dissolved PO separation, and at the highest ozone dose, dissolved PO separation efficiency increased by 7 to 81%. An ozonation pretreatment may therefore promote removal of dissolved PO from the liquid fraction during separation.

Spectroscopic approaches for phosphorus speciation in soils and other environmental systems

In the past decades, environmental scientists have become increasingly involved in developing novel approaches for applying emerging spectroscopic techniques to complex environmental matrices. The objective of this review is to convey the most common chemical species of phosphorus reported for soils, sediments, model systems, and waste materials based on analyses by four spectroscopic techniques: X-ray absorption near-edge structure, nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Unique information is provided by each technique at a level of specificity that depends in part on matrix complexity. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques reveal inorganic and organic P species in intact environmental matrices or in chemical extracts, whereas the Fourier transform infrared and Raman techniques can provide more specific bonding information about mineral or adsorbed P species in model analogs of matrix components. The most common P species in soils and sediments as indicated by spectroscopy are hydroxyapatite and octacalcium phosphate minerals, phosphate adsorbed on Fe- and Al-oxides, pyrophosphates and polyphosphates, phosphate mono- and di-esters, and phosphonates. Continued advancements in spectroscopic methods should improve speciation-based models of P mobilization and transformations in the environment.

Combining size fractionation, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to probe zinc speciation in pig slurry

Zinc occurs in high quantity in pig slurry since it is used as an essential micronutrient at high concentrations in animal feeds despite the low Zn assimilation by pigs. Zinc accumulation was measured in soil surface layers that had been amended with pig slurry, while also determining the phytotoxicity as well as the extent of groundwater quality degradation. To accurately predict the mobility and bioavailability of Zn derived from pig slurry spreading, the speciation of this element has to be assessed since the total concentration is not sufficient. This study involved a combination of techniques to investigate Zn speciation in pig slurry. Size fractionation was first performed to account for the complexity of pig slurry, and 75% of total Zn was detected in the 0.45- to 20-mum particle-size range. Then X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses were combined to assess Zn speciation. The findings highlighted the presence of 49% Zn bound to organic matter, 37% amorphous Zn hydroxides [Zn(OH)(2)], and 14% sphalerite (ZnS).

XANES speciation of P in environmental samples: an assessment of filter media for on-site wastewater treatment

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is a useful technique for characterization of chemical species of phosphorus in complex environmental samples. To develop and evaluate bed filters as sustainable on-site wastewater treatment solutions, our objective in this study was to determine the chemical forms of accumulated phosphorus in a selection of promising filter materials: Filtralite P, Filtra P, Polonite, Absol, blast furnace slag, and wollastonite. Full-scale operational wastewater-treatment systems were sampled and in addition, filter samples collected from laboratory studies provided access to additional media and complementary samples. Phosphorus species were characterized using phosphorus K-edge XANES spectroscopy, complemented by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). No systematic differences could be seen in the results between laboratory- and full-scale samples. All six filter media contained significant amounts of crystalline calcium phosphates. Some samples also contained amorphous calcium phosphate (>60% of total P in Absol). In Filtralite P and blast furnace slag, more than 35% of the accumulated phosphorus was associated with Fe or Al. Both the power and shortcomings of XANES analysis for characterizing P species in these filter media are discussed.

Phosphorus forms in conventional and organic dairy manure identified by solution and solid state p-31 NMR spectroscopy

Organic dairy production has increased rapidly in recent years. Organic dairy cows (Bos taurus) generally eat different diets than their conventional counterparts. Although these differences could impact availability, utilization, and cycling of manure nutrients, little such information is available to aid organic dairy farmers in making nutrient and manure management decisions. In this study, we comparatively characterized P in organic and conventional dairy manure using solution and solid state (31)P NMR spectroscopic techniques. Phosphorus in both types of dairy manure was extracted with water, Na acetate buffer (100 mmol L(-1), pH 5.0) plus 20 mg Na dithionite mL(-1), or 0.025 mol L(-1) NaOH with 50 mmolL(-1) EDTA. Solution NMR analysis revealed that organic dairy manure contained about 10% more inorganic phosphate than conventional dairy manure. Whereas organic dairy manure did contain slightly more phytate P, it contained 30 to 50% less monoester P than conventional dairy manure. Solid state NMR spectroscopy revealed that mono-, di-, and trivalent metal P species with different stabilities were present in the two dairy manures. Conventional dairy manure contained relatively higher contents of soluble inorganic P species and stable metal phytate species. In contrast, organic dairy manure contained more Ca and Mg species of P. These results indicate that P transformation rates and quantities should be expected to differ between organic and conventional dairy manures.

Modeling of ammonia speciation in anaerobic digesters

Anaerobic digestion of high-nitrogen wastes such as animal manure can be inhibited by high concentrations of un-ionized ammonia, NH(3) (aq). Understanding the toxicity of NH(3) (aq) to anaerobic digestion requires a method for determining its concentration. Previous work on ammonia toxicity in anaerobic digesters has utilized a simple equilibrium calculation for estimating NH(3) (aq) concentration from total ammonia, temperature, and pH. This approach is not appropriate for concentrated solutions. In this work, a speciation model for major solutes in anaerobic digesters, based on Pitzer's ion-interaction approach, is presented. Model simulations show that the simple equilibrium calculation (without corrections for non-ideal behavior) substantially overestimates NH(3) (aq) concentration for all but dilute digesters. This error in concentration determination increases with total solids content and is estimated to be greater than 40% for a digester fed dairy manure with 5% total solids or swine manure with 3% total solids. However, including an estimate of the activity coefficient for NH(4)(+) in the simple equilibrium calculation results in much more accurate estimates of NH(3) (aq) concentration. In this case, the estimated error is less than 10% in the absence of struvite precipitation at the highest total solids contents considered.

Evidence for struvite in poultry litter: effect of storage and drying

The use of spectroscopic techniques (especially phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance [(31)P-NMR] and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy) has recently advanced the analysis of the speciation of P in poultry litter (PL) and greatly enhanced our understanding of changes in P pools in PL that receive alum (aluminum sulfate) to reduce water-soluble P and control ammonia emissions from poultry houses. Questions remain concerning changes of P species during long-term storage, drying, or after application of PL to cropland or for other uses, such as turfgrass. In this study, we investigated a set of six PL samples (of which three were alum-amended and three were unamended) that had been characterized previously. The P speciation was analyzed using solid-state (31)P-NMR spectroscopy, and the mineralogy was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) after storing the samples moist and dried for up to 5 yr under controlled conditions. The magnesium ammonium phosphate mineral struvite was identified in all but one PL samples. Struvite concentrations were generally lower in dried samples (< or = 14%) than in samples stored moist (23 and 26%). The moist samples also had higher concentrations of phosphate bound to aluminum hydroxides. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy was in general more sensitive than XRD in detecting and quantifying P species. Although phosphate associated with calcium and aluminum made up a large proportion of P species, they were not detected by XRD.
