Characterization and dispersion modeling of odors from a piggery facility

Highly efficient reduction of ammonia emissions from livestock waste by the synergy of novel manure acidification and inhibition of ureolytic bacteria

The global livestock system is one of the largest sources of ammonia emissions and there is an urgent need for ammonia mitigation. Here, we designed and constructed a novel strategy to abate ammonia emissions via livestock manure acidification based on a synthetic lactic acid bacteria community (LAB SynCom). The LAB SynCom possessed a wide carbon source spectrum and pH profile, high adaptability to the manure environment, and a high capability of generating lactic acid. The mitigation strategy was optimized based on the test and performance by adjusting the LAB SynCom inoculation ratio and the adding frequency of carbon source, which contributed to a total ammonia reduction efficiency of 95.5 %. Furthermore, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that the LAB SynCom treatment reshaped the manure microbial community structure. Importantly, 22 manure ureolytic microbial genera and urea hydrolysis were notably inhibited by the LAB SynCom treatment during the treatment process. These findings provide new insight into manure acidification that the conversion from ammonia to ammonium ions and the inhibition of ureolytic bacteria exerted a synergistic effect on ammonia mitigation. This work systematically developed a novel strategy to mitigate ammonia emissions from livestock waste, which is a crucial step forward from traditional manure acidification to novel and environmental-friendly acidification.

Atmospheric odor dispersion from oil refinery flare system: a case study

A flare stack is an indispensable device in the oil and gas industry for allowing the safe combustion of gases into the atmosphere, especially during emergencies. However, it is not ideal for the routine disposal of gaseous waste, as it is subject to meteorological influences and poor operational control. In addition, it can be affected by toxic currents and thus pose a potential risk of odors; in view of this, an assessment must be made of the implications of burning on the environment and health. Atmospheric dispersion modelling has proved to be a very useful tool for this purpose. In light of this, an attempt has been made in this work to evaluate the impact of H₂S on the well-being (odor perception) of the community in the surrounding area of an oil refinery, where the temporary burning of rich gas in H₂S occurs in a chemical flare, and operational factors have an influence on atmospheric dispersion. The odor assessment was carried out with the aid of AERMOD which was adapted to estimate the maximum odor concentration for very short periods by means of peak-to-mean ratios. The results showed that H₂S detection can reach a probability rate of 42% at 3.5 km distance from the flare (in a time interval of 5 s) with a relatively high degree of annoyance (3.0 AU). However, some operational procedures can reduce the probability of odor detection to 29% and the degree of annoyance to 2.6 AU.

Dispersion modeling of odour, gases, and respirable dust using AERMOD for poultry and dairy barns in the Canadian Prairies

For determining setback distances considering multiple air pollutants, a comprehensive study was conducted to simulate the atmospheric dispersion of odour, ammonia (NH₃), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and respirable dust using an US EPA air dispersion model AERMOD for a commercial dairy, broiler, and cage-layer barn in the Canadian Prairies. The simulation was conducted using five years of meteorological data. Setback distances were determined with the input of varying monthly emission rates of all four air pollutants and odour impact criteria specifically developed for all three odour sources. Results showed the layer barn had the greatest odour impact area (maximum 3023 m for an annual average odour concentration of 0.01 OU m^-3) followed by the broiler and dairy barns. Due to the prevailing south wind for all three barns, odour traveled farthest in the north. Using the suggested odour impact criteria by the Government of Saskatchewan defined for all odour sources, maximum setback distances were decreasing from 1941 to 641 m for the layer barn and from 980 to 320 m for the broiler barn along with the increasing of odour concentration (OC) thresholds (1-6 OU m^-3), all in the north direction. While for the dairy barn, setback distances were determined only under an OC limit of 1 OU m^-3; maximum 205 m in the north and minimum 171 m in the south. Using the newly developed odour impact criteria specifically for the three odour sources, maximum setback distance of 558 m in the north was determined for the layer barn under an odour threshold of 9 OU m^-3. Additionally, the results suggest the use of odour impact criteria for determining setback distance rather than using gas/respirable threshold limits set in ambient air quality standards as the former always requires much greater setback distances than the latter.

Air pollution from industrial swine operations and blood pressure of neighboring residents

BACKGROUND

Industrial swine operations emit odorant chemicals including ammonia, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and volatile organic compounds. Malodor and pollutant concentrations have been associated with self-reported stress and altered mood in prior studies.

OBJECTIVES

We conducted a repeated-measures study of air pollution, stress, and blood pressure in neighbors of swine operations.

METHODS

For approximately 2 weeks, 101 nonsmoking adult volunteers living near industrial swine operations in 16 neighborhoods in eastern North Carolina sat outdoors for 10 min twice daily at preselected times. Afterward, they reported levels of hog odor on a 9-point scale and measured their blood pressure twice using an automated oscillometric device. During the same 2- to 3-week period, we measured ambient levels of H2S and PM10 at a central location in each neighborhood. Associations between systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively) and pollutant measures were estimated using fixed-effects (conditional) linear regression with adjustment for time of day.

RESULTS

PM10 showed little association with blood pressure. DBP [β (SE)] increased 0.23 (0.08) mmHg per unit of reported hog odor during the 10 min outdoors and 0.12 (0.08) mmHg per 1-ppb increase of H2S concentration in the same hour. SBP increased 0.10 (0.12) mmHg per odor unit and 0.29 (0.12) mmHg per 1-ppb increase of H2S in the same hour. Reported stress was strongly associated with BP; adjustment for stress reduced the odor-DBP association, but the H2S-SBP association changed little.

CONCLUSIONS

Like noise and other repetitive environmental stressors, malodors may be associated with acute blood pressure increases that could contribute to development of chronic hypertension.
