Occurrence, Concentrations, and Risks of Pharmaceutical Compounds in Private Wells in Central Pennsylvania

Occurrence profiling, risk assessment, and correlations of antimicrobials in surface water and groundwater systems in Southwest Nigeria

The presence of antimicrobials in water has grown into a major global health concern. This study thus focused on the presence, ecological implications, and potential health risks associated with nine antimicrobials: five antibiotics (ampicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and tetracycline) and four parabens (methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben) in surface water and groundwater samples collected from three Southwestern States in Nigeria (Osun, Oyo, and Lagos States). These antimicrobials were widely detected across the three States with ciprofloxacin being the most dominant having maximum average concentrations of 189 μg L-1 and 319 μg L-1 in surface water and groundwater respectively. The range of average concentrations of antibiotics in surface water are 47.3-235 μg L-1 (Osun), 27.9-166 μg L-1 (Oyo) and 52.1-159 μg L-1 (Lagos). For groundwater, it is 35.3-180 μg L-1 (Osun), 26.5-181 μg L-1 (Oyo) and 32.3-319 μg L-1 (Lagos). The average concentrations of all parabens were 32.4-153 μg L-1, 53.4-80.1 μg L-1, and 83.2-132 μg L-1 for surface water and 46.7-55.7 μg L-1, 53-117 μg L-1, and 62.4-118 μg L-1 for groundwater in Osun, Oyo, and Lagos States respectively. Methylparaben was most frequently detected paraben with average concentrations of 153 μg L-1 and 117 μg L-1 in surface water and groundwater respectively. The measured environmental concentrations of these antimicrobials pose a significant ecological risk while those of ciprofloxacin and ampicillin pose a high health risk to all population groups studied. The average concentrations of antibiotics investigated in this study exceeded their threshold values for Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNEC) associated with resistance selection, except for tetracycline.

Revealing discrepancies and drivers in the impact of lomefloxacin on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial community growth and succession

The coexistence of antibiotics and nitrates has raised great concern about antibiotic's impact on denitrification. However, conflicting results in these studies are very puzzling, possibly due to differences in microbial succession stages. This study investigated the effects of the high-priority urgent antibiotic, lomefloxacin (LOM), on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial growth and succession. The results demonstrated that LOM's impact on denitrification varied significantly across three successional stages, with the most pronounced effects exhibited in the initial stage (53.8% promotion at 100 ng/L-LOM, 84.6% inhibition at 100 μg/L-LOM), followed by the decline stage (13.3-18.2% inhibition), while no effect in the stable stage. Hence, a distinct pattern encompassing susceptibility, insusceptibility, and sub-susceptibility in LOM's impact on denitrification was discovered. Microbial metabolism and environment variation drove the pattern, with bacterial numbers and antibiotic resistance as primary influencers (22.5% and 15.3%, p < 0.01), followed by carbon metabolism and microbial community (5.0% and 3.68%, p < 0.01). The structural equation model confirmed results reliability. Bacterial numbers and resistance influenced susceptibility by regulating compensation and bacteriostasis, while carbon metabolism and microbial community impacted energy, electron transfer, and gene composition. These findings provide valuable insights into the complex interplay between antibiotics and denitrification patterns in groundwater.

Reliability of organic and biogenic pollutant removal in selected technologies used in domestic wastewater treatment plants: A comparative analysis

The results of a comparative study of two different technological solutions applicable to decentralised domestic wastewater treatment systems are presented. A hybrid reactor with activated sludge and mobile biofilm carriers moving in wastewater is one of them, and an innovative quasi-technical combination of a biological reactor with a sprinkled bed filled with sintered clay granules, followed in the process line by an innovative slope type filtration bed, is the other one. The study has shown a significant advantage of filter bed installations in functional quality, expressed in low values of indicators and pollutant concentrations. In the comparison of technological reliability and probability of exceeding the requirement values of BOD5 = 40 mg/L, Facility 1 achieved technological reliability of 70% and probability of exceeding was 23%. Technological reliability of Facility 2 in this component was 100% and P = 0%. Both facilities presented 100% technological reliability in the COD indicators, with zero probability of exceeding the required value of 150 mg/L. The reliability of TSS removal was similarly high in both facilities: 91% and 100%. The higher functional quality of Facility 2 was evident in TN and PO4-P parameters, where the period of its operation with exceeded values did not exceed 20% and 13%, respectively, with a low probability of exceeding the value of 18% and 2.5%, respectively. However, Facility 1 was unreliable in this regard in 90% and 84%, with a very high probability of exceeding the required values of these parameters: 88% and 72%. This facility does not meet the required criteria in this respect and may cause a risk to the aquatic environment if wastewater is discharged directly into open watercourses, or if it enters shallow groundwater. The use of a suitable, biologically active soil-plant receiver can eliminate this risk.

Fixed bed column experiments using cotton gin waste and walnut shells-derived biochar as low-cost solutions to removing pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions

Acetaminophen (ACT), sulfapyridine (SPY), ibuprofen (IBP) and docusate (DCT) are pharmaceuticals with widespread usage that experience incomplete removal in wastewater treatment systems. While further removal of these pharmaceuticals from wastewater effluent is desired prior to beneficial reuse, additional treatment technologies are often expensive and energy intensive. This study evaluated the ability of biochar produced from cotton gin waste (CG700) and walnut shells (WS800) to remove four pharmaceuticals (ACT, SPY, IBP, and DCT) from aqueous solution. Physico-chemical properties of the biochars were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and zeta potential. The increased pyrolysis temperature during the production of WS800 led to an increase in the specific surface area and increased dehydration of the biochar represented by the loss of the OH-group. Fixed-bed column experiments were performed to determine the difference in removal efficiency between the biochars and elucidate the effects of biochar properties on the adsorption capacity for the pharmaceuticals of interest. Results showed that CG700 had a greater affinity for removing DCT (99%) and IBP (50%), while WS800 removed 72% of SPY and 68% of ACT after 24 h. Adsorption was influenced by the solution pH, surface area, net charge, and functional groups of the biochars. The mechanisms for removal included pore filling and diffusion, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π electron donor acceptor interactions. To conduct predictive modeling of the column breakthrough curves, the Thomas, Adams-Bohart, and Yoon-Nelson models were applied to the experimental data. Results demonstrated that these models generally provided a poor fit for the description of asymmetrical breakthrough curves. Overall, the results demonstrate that biochars from cotton gin waste and walnut shells could be used as cost-effective, environmentally friendly alternatives to activated carbon for the removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions.

Screening of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) along wastewater treatment system equipped with root zone treatment: A potential model for domestic waste leachate management

We present the use of root zone treatment (RZT) based system for the removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from domestic wastewater. The occurrence of more than a dozen PPCPs were detected in an academic institution wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at three specific locations, i.e., influent, root treatment zone, and effluents. The comparisons of observed compounds detected at various stages of WWTP suggest that the presence of PPCPs, like homatropine, cytisine, carbenoxolone, 4,2',4',6'-tetrahydroxychalcone, norpromazine, norethynodrel, fexofenadine, indinavir, dextroamphetamine, 3-hydroxymorphinan, phytosphingosine, octadecanedioic acid, meradimate, 1-hexadecanoyl-sn-glycerol, and 1-hexadecylamine, are unusual than the usual reported PPCPs in the WWTPs. In general, carbamazepine, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, caffeine, triclocarban, and triclosan are often reported in wastewater systems. The normalized abundances of PPCPs range between 0.037-0.012, 0.108-0.009, and 0.208-0.005 in main influent, root zone effluent, and main effluents, respectively, of the WWTP. In addition, the removal rates of PPCPs were observed from -200.75% to ∼100% at RZT phase in the plant. Interestingly, we observed several PPCPs at later stages of treatment which were not detected in the influent of the WWTP. This is probably owing to the presence of conjugated metabolites of various PPCPs present in the influent, which subsequently got deconjugated to reform the parent compounds during the biological wastewater treatment. In addition, we suspect the potential release of earlier absorbed PPCPs in the system, which were absent on that particular day of sampling but have been part of earlier influents. In essence, RZT-based WWTP was found to be effective in removing the PPCPs and other organic contaminants in the study but results in stress the need for further comprehensive research on RZT system to conclude the exact removal efficacy and fate of PPCPs during treatment in the system. As a current research gap, the study also recommended RZT to be appraised for PPCPs in-situ remediation from landfill leachates, an underestimated source of PPCPs intrusion in the environment.

A Current Review of Water Pollutants in American Continent: Trends and Perspectives in Detection, Health Risks, and Treatment Technologies

Currently, water pollution represents a serious environmental threat, causing an impact not only to fauna and flora but also to human health. Among these pollutants, inorganic and organic pollutants are predominantly important representing high toxicity and persistence and being difficult to treat using current methodologies. For this reason, several research groups are searching for strategies to detect and remedy contaminated water bodies and effluents. Due to the above, a current review of the state of the situation has been carried out. The results obtained show that in the American continent a high diversity of contaminants is present in the water bodies affecting several aspects, in which in some cases, there exists alternatives to realize the remediation of contaminated water. It is concluded that the actual challenge is to establish sanitation measures at the local level based on the specific needs of the geographical area of interest. Therefore, water treatment plants must be designed according to the contaminants present in the water of the region and tailored to the needs of the population of interest.

Meta-analysis addressing the characterization and risk identification of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in global groundwater

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the significant global issues to public health. Compared to other aquatic environments, research on AMR in groundwater is scarce. In the study, a meta-analysis was conducted to explore the characteristics and risks of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in global groundwater, using a data set of antibiotic concentrations collected from publications during 2000-2021 and a large-scale metagenomes of groundwater samples (n = 330). The ecotoxicological risks of antibiotics in the global groundwater were evaluated using mixture risk quotient with concentration addition model to consider the synergistic effects of multiple antibiotics. Bioinformatic annotations identified 1413 ARGs belonging to 37 ARG types in the global groundwater, dominated by rifamycin, polyketide, and quinolone resistance genes and including some emerging ARGs such as mcr-family and carbapenem genes. Relatively, the level of ARGs in the groundwater from spring was significantly higher (ANOVA, p < 0.01) than those from the riparian zone, sand and deep aquifer. Similarly, metal resistance genes (MRGs) were prevalent in the global groundwater, and network analysis suggested the MRGs presented non-random co-occurrence with the ARGs in such environments. Taxonomic annotations showed Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Eukaryota, Acidobacteria and Thaumarchaeota were the dominant phylum in the groundwater, and the microbial community largely shaped profile of ARGs in the environment. Notably, the ARGs presented co-occurrence with mobile genetic elements, virulence factors and human bacterial pathogens, indicating potential dissemination risk of ARGs in the groundwater. Furthermore, an omics-based approach was used for health risk assessment of antibiotic resistome and screened out 152 risk ARGs in the global groundwater. Comparatively, spring and cold creek presented higher risk index, which deserves more attention to ensure the safety of water supply.

Antibiotics, antibiotic resistance and associated risk in natural springs from an agroecosystem environment

This study investigates the occurrence, transport, and risks associated to antibiotic residues, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli (AR-E. coli) in eleven natural springs in an agroecosystem environment with intense livestock production, where groundwater nitrate concentration usually sets above 50 mg L^-1. Out of 23 multiple-class antibiotics monitored, tetracycline and sulfonamide residues were the most ubiquitous, and they were detected at concentrations ranging from ng L^-1 to μg L^-1. Five ARGs were monitored, conferring resistance to the antibiotic classes of major use in livestock production. Thus, genes conferring resistance to sulfonamides (sul1 and sul2) and tetracyclines (tetW) as well as a gene proxy for anthropogenic pollution (intI1) were present in most springs. sul1 was the most abundant, with absolute concentrations ranging from 4 × 10² to 5.6 × 10⁶ gene copies L^-1 water. AR-E. coli showing resistance to sulfonamides and tetracyclines was also detected, with a prevalence up to approximately 40 % in some sites but with poor correlations with the concentration of antibiotic residues and ARGs. The occurrence of antibiotics, ARGs and AR-E. coli was characterized by large seasonal variations which were mostly associated to both hydrological factors and reactive transport processes. Finally, a risk assessment approach pointed out towards low risk for both the groundwater environment and human health, when spring water is used for direct human consumption, associated with the occurrence of antibiotics, ARGs and AR-E. coli. However, long-term effects cannot be neglected, and proper actions must be taken to preserve groundwater quality.

Overview of African water resources contamination by contaminants of emerging concern

This review look at several classes of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in conventional and non-conventional water resources across the African continent's five regions. According to the review, pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, personal care products, pesticides, per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, and microplastics were found in conventional and non-conventional water resources. Most conventional water resources, such as rivers, streams, lakes, wells, and boreholes, are used as drinking water sources. Non-conventional water sources, such as treated wastewater (effluents), are used for domestic and agricultural purposes. However, CECs remain part of the treated wastewater, which is being discharged to surface water or used for agriculture. Thus, wastewater (effluent) is the main contributor to the pollution of other water resources. For African countries, the prevalence of rising emerging pollutants in water poses a severe environmental threat. There are different adverse effects of CECs, including the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, ecotoxicological effects, and several endocrine disorders. Therefore, this needs the urgent attention of the African Union, policymakers, Non-Governmental Organizations, and researchers to come together and tackle the problem.

Global groundwater vulnerability for Pharmaceutical and Personal care products (PPCPs): The scenario of second decade of 21st century

The global production of PPCPs have increased by multiple folds promoting excessive exposure of its metabolites to humans via different aquatic systems. The higher residence time of toxic precursors of these metabolites pose direct human health risk. Among the different aquatic systems, the contamination of groundwater by PPCPs is the most concerning threat. This threat is especially critical considering the lesser oxidizing potential of the groundwater as compared to freshwater/river water. A major challenge also arises due to excessive dependency of the world's population on groundwater, which is exponentially increasing with time. This makes the identification and characterization of spatial contamination hotspots highly probabilistic as compared to other freshwater systems. The situation is more vulnerable in developing countries where there is a reported inadequacy of wastewater treatment facilities, thereby forcing the groundwater to behave as the only available sequestrating sink for all these contaminants. With increased consumption of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals compounds, these wastes have proven capability in terms of enhancing the resistance among the biotic community of the soil systems, which ultimately can become catastrophic and carcinogenic in near future. Recent studies are supporting the aforementioned concern where compounds like diclofenac (analgesic) have attained a concentration of 1.3 mgL^-1 in the aquifer systems of Delhi, India. The situation is far worse for developed nations where prolonged and indiscriminate usage of antidepressants and antibiotics have life threating consequences. It has been confirmed that certain compounds like ofloxacin (antibiotics) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate are present in some of the most sensitive wells/springs of the United States and Mexico. The current trend of the situation has been demonstrated by integrating a comparative approach of the published literatures in last three years. This review provides first-hand information report for formulating a directive policy framework for tackling PPCPs issues in the groundwater system.

Mechanism evolution and prediction of carbamazepine sorption by mangrove plant residue-derived biochars

A mechanism for carbamazepine (CBZ) sorption by mangrove plant residue-derived biochars pyrolyzed at 200-700 °C (referred as MPR200-MPR700) was elucidated in this study. The experimental results demonstrated that the dominant sorption mechanism of biochars for CBZ was evolved from partition to adsorption with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The CBZ concentration-dependent contributions of partition and adsorption were controlled by the relative noncarbonized and carbonized fractions of biochars. The partition medium changed from a polymeric aliphatic fraction (mangrove plant residue [MPR]200-MPR400) to a more condensed aromatic phase (MPR500-MPR600), which made the partition less favorable. Meanwhile, the adsorption was selectively regulated by polarity (MPR200-MPR300) and porosity (MPR400-MPR700) for different biochars. A pragmatic model including the sorbent aromaticity index (H/C) was put forward to predict CBZ sorption to MPR200-MPR700 and other carbonaceous materials reported in the literature. The findings can be helpful in understanding CBZ-biochar interactions and developing effective sorbents (such as biochars) for pollutant sequestration.

Occurrence, source apportionment and potential risks of selected PPCPs in groundwater used as a source of drinking water from key urban-rural settings of Pakistan

BACKGROUND

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants that have been extensively used in present time to improve the living standards. Their persistence in water resources due to various anthropogenic sources such as wastewater treatment plants, pharmaceutical industries, and runoff from agricultural and livestock farms has not only threaten aquatic life but their occurrence in groundwater has also raised concerns related to humans' wellbeing.

METHODS

Considering this as a neglected area of research in Pakistan, a systematic monitoring study was designed to investigate their occurrence, sources, and potential environmental and human health risks in groundwater from urban-rural areas of six cities. Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was used to analyze the collected samples preceded by solid-phase extraction.

RESULTS

Overall, 8 out of 11 selected PPCPs were detected in groundwater samples with detection frequency ranging from 5.5-65%. Their concentrations ranged from below limit of detection (<LOD) to 1961 ng/L. The overall mean concentrations of detected PPCPs were found below 100 ng/L. The highest mean concentration was reported for Ibuprofen (154 ng/L) in Rawalpindi/Islamabad. Results of PCA-MLR revealed that domestic wastewater discharge (76.4%) was the dominant source contributing to PPCPs contamination in groundwater. Followed by mixed source (pharmaceutical & hospital waste) 17.8%, and rural discharge/animal husbandry 5.8%. No appreciable risk to human health upon exposure to detected PPCPs via drinking water was anticipated. However, environmental risk assessment indicated moderate risk posed to P. subcapitata (RQ = 0.98) and D. magna (RQ = 0.2) by ibuprofen.

CONCLUSION

The current study reports the first evidence of PPCPs occurrence in groundwater in Pakistan. Reporting their occurrence in groundwater is a fundamental initial step to inform public-health decisions concerning sewage systems and drinking water quality. Hence, comprehensive monitoring programs are required to further investigate contamination of emerging contaminants in groundwater and their associated risks.

Human health and ecological risk assessment of 98 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) detected in Indian surface and wastewaters

The release of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environmental waters has become an urgent issue due to their pseudo-persistent traits. The present study was undertaken to conduct a screening-level risk assessment of 98 PPCPs, detected in different water matrices (treated wastewater, surface water, and groundwater) of India, for evaluating ecological risk (risk to fish, daphnia, and algae), human health risk, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) selection risk by following risk quotient (RQ) based methodology. In the present study, 47% of the detected PPCPs in Indian waters were found to exert a possible risk (RQ > 1) to either aquatic species and human health, or cause AMR selection risk. 17 out of 25 antibiotics detected in the environmental waters were found to pose a threat of AMR selection. 11 out of 49 pharmaceuticals were found to exert human health risk from ingesting contaminated surface water, whereas only 2 pharmaceuticals out of 25 were found to exert risk from the intake of groundwater. Very high RQs (>1000) for few pharmaceuticals were obtained, signifying a great potential of the detected PPCPs in causing severe health concern, aquatic toxicity, and AMR spread. Within India, special attention needs to be given to the pharmaceutical hubs, as the environmental waters in these regions were found to be severely contaminated with drug residues resulting in extremely high RQs. The present study will be helpful in prioritizing the detected PPCPs in the environmental waters of India, for which immediate attention and enforceable guidelines are required.

Transport of Carbamazepine, Ciprofloxacin and Sulfamethoxazole in Activated Carbon: Solubility and Relationships between Structure and Diffusional Parameters

The transport of carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole in the different pores of activated carbon in an aqueous solution is a dynamic process that is entirely dependent on the intrinsic parameters of these molecules and of the adsorbent. The macroscopic processes that take place are analyzed by interfacial diffusion and reaction models. Modeling of the experimental kinetic curves obtained following batch treatment of each solute at 2 µg/L in tap water showed (i) that the transport and sorption rates were controlled by external diffusion and intraparticle diffusion and (ii) that the effective diffusion coefficient for each solute, with the surface and pore diffusion coefficients, were linked by a linear relationship. A statistical analysis of the experimental data established correlations between the diffusional parameters and some geometrical parameters of these three molecules. Given the major discontinuities observed in the adsorption kinetics, the modeling of the experimental data required the use of traditional kinetic models, as well as a new kinetic model composed of the pseudo first or second order model and a sigmoidal expression. The predictions of this model were excellent. The solubility of each molecule below 60 °C was formulated by an empirical expression.

A Review of the Occurrence of Pharmaceutical Compounds as Emerging Contaminants in Treated Wastewater and Aquatic Environments

In recent years, pharmaceutical compounds have emerged as potential contaminants in the aquatic matrices of the environment. High production, consumption, and limited removal through conventional treatment processes/wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the major causes for the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater and aquatic environments worldwide. A number of studies report adverse health effects and risks to aquatic life and the ecosystem because of the presence of pharmaceutical compounds in the aquatic environment. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in treated wastewater from various WWTPs, surface water and groundwater bodies. Additionally, this review provides comprehensive information and pointers for research in wastewater treatment and waterbodies management.

A Review on Emerging Pollutants in the Water Environment: Existences, Health Effects and Treatment Processes

Emerging pollutants (EPs), also known as micropollutants, have been a major issue for the global population in recent years as a result of the potential threats they bring to the environment and human health. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), antibiotics, and hormones that are used in great demand for health and cosmetic purposes have rapidly culminated in the emergence of environmental pollutants. EPs impact the environment in a variety of ways. EPs originate from animal or human sources, either directly discharged into waterbodies or slowly leached via soils. As a result, water quality will deteriorate, drinking water sources will be contaminated, and health issues will arise. Since drinking water treatment plants rely on water resources, the prevalence of this contamination in aquatic environments, particularly surface water, is a severe problem. The review looks into several related issues on EPs in water environment, including methods in removing EPs. Despite its benefits and downsides, the EPs treatment processes comprise several approaches such as physico-chemical, biological, and advanced oxidation processes. Nonetheless, one of the membrane-based filtration methods, ultrafiltration, is considered as one of the technologies that promises the best micropollutant removal in water. With interesting properties including a moderate operating manner and great selectivity, this treatment approach is more popular than conventional ones. This study presents a comprehensive summary of EP’s existence in the environment, its toxicological consequences on health, and potential removal and treatment strategies.

The emergence, trajectory, and impacts of emerging contaminants publications in the Journal of Environmental Quality

As analytical capabilities in the early 2000s began to enable the detection of chemicals in environmental media at increasingly small concentrations, chemicals with the potential to cause adverse human and ecosystem health effects began to be found nearly ubiquitously worldwide. The types of chemicals that were targeted for analysis included natural and synthetic hormones, human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, chemicals in personal care products, novel pesticides, nanoparticles, microplastics, and other chemicals of natural and synthetic origin. The impacts of these chemicals on environmental and human health in many cases remain unknown. Collectively, these chemicals became known as "emerging contaminants" or "contaminants of emerging concern." Much progress has been made toward understanding the sources of these contaminants in the environment, the processes that control their fate and transport once they are released into the environment, and the ability of technology and/or best management practices to mitigate their occurrence. As the Journal of Environmental Quality (JEQ) celebrates its 50th anniversary, we sought to understand how publications in the journal have made impactful contributions in the research area of emerging contaminants. Here, we present the trajectory of publications in JEQ that have shaped knowledge in this field, highlight the importance of these contributions, and conclude with opportunities for JEQ to continue attracting high-quality emerging contaminants research.

Determination of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals in groundwater for human and animal consumption and crop irrigation in Galicia

Pharmaceuticals and heavy metals are contaminants present in groundwaters, which are the main source of drinking water in most parts of the world. In the northwest region of Spain, Galicia, groundwater harvesting is a common practice for drinking water supply, crop irrigation, cattle watering, as well as recreational use such as filling pools. In order to assess the quality of Galician groundwaters, the presence of 21 pharmaceuticals and 10 heavy metals was analysed by UPLC-MS/MS and ICP/MS methods, respectively, in a total of 118 groundwater samples from private wells. Seventeen of the 21 compounds studied were detected in 28% of the samples, with the highest presence of pharmaceuticals belonging to the antimicrobial group (52%), specifically the sulphonamides group in a range of concentration between 21 and 14.9 ng/L. In addition, 30% of the samples contained at least one heavy metal (Mn, As and Fe) above the legally permitted levels. Evaluation of the risk associated with the consumption of the analysed groundwater indicated no human risk for any of the detected pharmaceuticals but high cancer risk for children due to Cd, Cr and As concentrations was observe.

Environmental Risk Assessment of Active Human Pharmaceutical Ingredients in Urban Rivers in Japan

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) have become a public concern owing to their possible adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan (MHLW) issued "Guidance on the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) in new pharmaceutical development" in 2016. To evaluate the validity of phase 1 in the MHLW's ERA guidance, we monitored the measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of approved APIs in urban rivers and sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Japan and compared these MECs with the predicted environmental concentration (PEC). We collected water samples from urban seven rivers and three STPs during each season. Fifty-one APIs for human and veterinary use and the artificial sweetener sucralose were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Forty-four APIs were observed in the rivers and 42 were found in the influent and effluent of STPs, with levels ranging from nanograms to micrograms per liter. The action limit in phase I of the MHLW's guidance was set to 10 ng/L, and there was no API except for ketoprofen, for which PEC of the MHLW's guidance (PECjapan) was lower than 10 ng/L and the maximum MEC (MECmax) was 10 ng/L or greater. Almost all APIs also had median MECs that were lower than those of the respective PECjapan. These results indicate that the PECjapan values in phase I of the MHLW's guidance were appropriate. However, some APIs had MECmax values that were greater than those of the respective PECjapan due to overestimation of the dilution factor of river water and/or underestimation of API production.

Autopsy, thanatopraxy, cemeteries and crematoria as hotspots of toxic organic contaminants in the funeral industry continuum

The occurrence and health risks of toxic organic contaminants (TOCs) in the funeral industry are relatively under-studied compared to other industries. An increasing body of literature reports TOCs including emerging contaminants in the funeral industry, but comprehensive reviews of the evidence are still lacking. Hence, evidence was analysed to address the proposition that, the funeral industry constitutes several hotspot reservoirs of a wide spectrum of TOCs posing ecological and human health risks. TOCs detected include embalming products, persistent organic pollutants, synthetic pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and illicit drugs. Human cadavers, solid wastes, wastewaters and air-borne particulates from autopsy, thanatopraxy care facilities (mortuaries, funeral homes), cemeteries and crematoria are hotspots of TOCs. Ingestion of contaminated water, and aquatic and marine foods constitutes non-occupational human exposure, while occupational exposure occurs via inhalation and dermal intake. Risk factors promoting exposure to TOCs include unhygienic burial practices, poor solid waste and wastewater disposal, and weak and poorly enforced regulations. The generic health risks of TOCs are quite diverse, and include; (1) genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, teratogenicity and neurodevelopmental disorders, (2) development of antimicrobial resistance, (3) info-disruption via biomimicry, and (4) disruption of ecosystem functions and trophic interactions. Barring formaldehyde and inferential evidence, the epidemiological studies linking TOCs in the funeral industry to specific health outcomes are scarce. The reasons for the lack of evidence, and limitations of current health risk assessment protocols are discussed. A comprehensive framework for hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation (HIRAM) in the funeral industry is proposed. The HIRAM includes regulatory, surveillance and control systems such as prevention and removal of TOCs. Future directions on the ecotoxicology of mixtures, behaviour, and health risks of TOCs are highlighted. The opportunities presented by emerging tools, including isotopic labelling, genomics, big data analytics (e.g., machine learning), and in silico techniques in toxicokinetic modelling are highlighted.

Sulfamethoxazole Removal from Drinking Water by Activated Carbon: Kinetics and Diffusion Process

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a pharmaceutical residue, which is persistent and mobile in soils, shows low biodegradability, and is frequently found in the different aquatic compartments, can be found at very low concentrations in water intended for human consumption. In conditions compatible with industrial practices, the kinetic reactivity and performance of tap water purification using activated carbon powder (ACP) are examined here using two extreme mass ratios of SMX to ACP: 2 µg/L and 2 mg/L of SMX for only 10 mg/L of ACP. In response to surface chemistry, ACP texture and the intrinsic properties of SMX in water at a pH of 8.1, four kinetic models, and two monosolute equilibrium models showed a total purification of the 2 µg/L of SMX, the presence of energetic heterogeneity of surface adsorption of ACP, rapid kinetics compatible with the residence times of industrial water treatment processes, and kinetics affected by intraparticle diffusion. The adsorption mechanisms proposed are physical mechanisms based mainly on π-π dispersion interactions and electrostatic interactions by SMX-/Divalent cation/ArO- and SMX-/Divalent cation/ArCOO- bridging. Adsorption in tap water, also an innovative element of this study, shows that ACP is very efficient for the purification of very slightly polluted water.

Assessment of Sucralose, Caffeine and Acetaminophen as Anthropogenic Tracers in Aquatic Systems Across Florida

Sucralose is one of the most popular artificial sweeteners worldwide. Due to its high stability, persistence and low removal efficiency in wastewater treatment plants, sucralose has been used as an indicator of wastewater intrusion into aquatic systems. However, its stability has also been a reason for discussion whether sucralose's presence in surface water could indicate a recent anthropogenic input. Caffeine and acetaminophen have been considered as tracers in human impacted aquatic ecosystems and potentially good indicators of recent anthropogenic inputs into the environment due to their short half-lives in water. Here, a novel, high throughput and sensitive method based on online SPE-LC-HRMS for the determination of caffeine, sucralose and acetaminophen was developed and validated for both fresh and seawater samples and applied to environmental water samples to evaluate the efficiency of these compounds as tracers of aquatic pollution. Caffeine and sucralose were detected in > 70% of samples, while acetaminophen was only detected in 3% of samples above the MDL, demonstrating its limited environmental applicability.

Modeling carbamazepine transport in wastewater-irrigated soil under different land uses

The pharmaceutical compound carbamazepine (CBZ) is a contaminant of emerging concern. Wastewater irrigation can be a long-term, frequent source of CBZ; therefore, understanding the fate and transport of CBZ as a result of wastewater reuse practices has important environmental implications. The objective of this study was to estimate long-term soil transport of CBZ originating from treated wastewater irrigation on plots under different land uses. Field data from a previous study comparing CBZ concentrations in soil under different land uses were used in numerical modeling with HYDRUS-2D for the estimation of CBZ soil transport during 20 yr of irrigation with treated wastewater. This study showed high CBZ retention in soil under all investigated land uses. Adequate modeling results were obtained by using soil organic carbon-water partitioning coefficient (K_oc ) for the CBZ linear sorption coefficient (K_d ) estimation, yet an underestimation of CBZ concentration in soil was still noted. Thus, results suggest that, although highly important, organic carbon content is probably not the only soil property governing CBZ sorption at this site, indicating the potential research perspective. Modeling results showed wastewater irrigation containing CBZ for 20 yr increased the CBZ concentration in the soil profile and its vertical movement, with the slowest vertical transport rate occurring on the forested plots. Overall results suggest that a beneficial management practice could be to increase soil organic carbon (e.g., compost addition) when using treated wastewater for irrigation in order to retain CBZ in the surface soil and thus limit its leaching through the soil profile.

Influence of hydrologic and anthropogenic drivers on emerging organic contaminants in drinking water sources in the Susquehanna River Basin

Occurrence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in surface water bodies can cause adverse effects on non-target organisms. When surface waters are used as drinking water sources, temporal variability in EOC concentrations can potentially impact drinking water quality and human health. To better understand spatiotemporal variability of EOCs in drinking water sources in Central Pennsylvania, EOCs were evaluated in six drinking water sources during a two-year study period (April 2016-June 2018) in the Susquehanna River Basin (SRB). The study was conducted in two phases: Phase I was a spatially distributed sampling approach within the SRB focusing on seven human pharmaceuticals and Phase II was a temporally intensive sampling regime at a single site focusing on a broader range of EOCs. Concentration-discharge relationships were utilized to classify EOC transport dynamics and understand the extent to which hydrologic and anthropogenic factors, such as surface runoff and wastewater effluent, may contribute to EOC occurrence. Overall, EOCs were present at higher concentrations in colder seasons than warmer seasons. Thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid insecticide, and caffeine exhibited accretion dynamics during high-flow periods, suggesting higher transport during surface runoff events. Human pharmaceuticals known to persist in wastewater effluent were inversely correlated with discharge, indicating dilution characteristics consistent with diminished wastewater signals during high-flow periods. Acetaminophen exhibited near-chemostatic transport dynamics, indicating nonpoint source inputs during high-flow periods. Risk calculations revealed that although EOCs posed medium-to-high risk to aquatic organisms, human health risk through fish consumption was low.
