Abstract
Background A substantial amount of research has explored the intricate relationship between exercise and sleep quality, consistently confirming that exercise can effectively enhance sleep quality. Nevertheless, previous studies have yet to conclusively determine which specific exercise program is most efficacious in improving sleep quality. To address this gap, the present study systematically evaluated the differential effects of various types of exercise, as well as exercise dosages (including duration, intervention period, frequency, and intensity), on sleep outcomes using a network meta-analysis approach. This endeavor aims to provide evidence-based support for the development of scientifically effective exercise programs tailored to improve sleep quality. Methods Through the Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus databases, we conducted a search for randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of exercise interventions on sleep, with a search cutoff date of April 30, 2024. We rigorously selected the literature according to the PICOS principle, and two independent researchers extracted the data. We would like to change this passage to: Bias risk assessment was conducted using the RevMan 5.4 software, and traditional meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed using Stata 17.0 software to generate forest plots, network evidence plots, and funnel plots. Furthermore, we adopted the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) to evaluate and rank the intervention effects of different exercise types and dosages on sleep quality. To verify the robustness of our study results, we performed a sensitivity analysis using the leave-one-out method. Results The study strictly adhered to the PRISMA guidelines and included 58 RCT papers with a total of 5,008 participants. The network meta-analysis revealed significant variations in the impact of exercise frequency on sleep outcomes when compared to the control group. Interventions of 1-2 times per week [SMD = -0.85, 95% CI (-1.43, -0.26)], 3 times per week [SMD = -0.45, 95% CI (-0.80, -0.11)], and 4 times per week [SMD = -1.09, 95% CI (-1.92, -0.26)] demonstrated the most notable effects. Interventions lasting ≤30 min and 60-65 min were significantly more effective than the control group, with ≤30 min proving significantly more effective than 40-55 min [SMD = 0.75, 95% CI (0.01, 1.49)]. Interventions lasting 9-10 weeks [SMD = -1.40, 95% CI (-2.37, -0.44)], 12-16 weeks [SMD = -0.55, 95% CI (-0.90, -0.20)], and ≥ 24 weeks [SMD = -0.71, 95% CI (-1.31, -0.10)] were all significantly more effective than the control group. Additionally, the 9-10 weeks intervention period was found to be significantly more effective than the 6-8 weeks period [SMD = -1.21, 95% CI (-2.37, -0.04)]. Furthermore, interventions of moderate intensity [SMD = -1.06, 95% CI (-1.52, -0.61)] and high intensity [SMD = -1.48, 95% CI (-2.55, -0.40)] exercise interventions yielded significantly greater benefits compared to the control group. Specifically, high intensity interventions [SMD = -1.97, 95% CI (-3.37, -0.56)] and moderate intensity [SMD = -1.55, 95% CI (-2.57, -0.54)] exercise interventions were found to be significantly more effective than moderate-high intensity interventions. In terms of exercise types, aerobic exercise [SMD = -0.56, 95% CI (-0.86, -0.27)], traditional Chinese exercises [SMD = -0.57, 95% CI (-0.97, -0.18)], and combined exercise [SMD = -0.99, 95% CI (-1.66, -0.32)] interventions all produced significant improvements compared to the control group. The study determined that the most effective combination of exercise prescription elements for enhancing sleep quality includes a frequency of 4 times per week (SUCRA = 84.7), a duration of ≤30 min (SUCRA = 92.2), a period of 9-10 weeks (SUCRA = 89.9), and high-intensity (SUCRA = 92.9) combined exercise (SUCRA = 82.7). Conclusion The current evidence indicates that combined exercise with a frequency of 4 times per week, a duration of ≤30 min, a period of 9-10 weeks, and high intensity is most effective for improving sleep quality. Nevertheless, due to the limited number of studies included, further research is needed to enhance the reliability of the findings. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review aimed to investigate emerging evidence regarding the effectiveness of exercise for migraines, focusing on the results of recent trials. Additionally, it explored the possibility of exercise as a treatment for migraines. RECENT FINDINGS Between 2020 and 2023, five, four, one, and two trials were conducted regarding the effect of aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, Tai Chi, and yoga, respectively, on migraine; all studies showed significant effects. Two trials on aerobic exercise showed that high-intensity exercise was similar to or slightly more effective than moderate-intensity exercise as a treatment for migraines. Three trials on anaerobic exercise reported its effectiveness in preventing migraines. Regarding efficacy, side effects, and health benefits, aerobic exercises and yoga are potentially beneficial strategies for the prevention of migraines. Further studies are needed to develop evidence-based exercise programs for the treatment of migraines.

Abstract
The objective of this 18-month walking intervention was to evaluate the effect on rest-activity rhythm (RAR) for older adults with mild-to-moderate dementia (65.8% female; aged M = 82.4 [SD = 6.5]). The intervention group (n = 44) was intended to walk 30 min, five times per week for 18 months. The control group (n = 35) received sedentary activities or usual care. RAR was measured at baseline to after 18 months and five times in between actigraphy outcome variables (interdaily stability, intradaily variability, relative amplitude, activity 10 most active hours, and activity 5 least active hours). Hierarchical mixed model analyses revealed no significant intervention effects (with or without baseline confounders as covariate) on RAR. However, participants in the intervention group were able to significantly increase their daily life activity (activity 10 most active hours) from the onset of the preceding measurement, b = 0.10, t(239.32) = 2.36, p = .019. More research is warranted to study the effect of regular walks on older persons with dementia whose RAR is worst at baseline.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality is linked to physiological dysfunction, which increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and other medical conditions. Despite the known health risks of sleep disturbances, literature is still scant regarding sleep quality and its associated factors among healthcare professionals in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its associated factors among healthcare professionals at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Methods An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. A total of 418 healthcare professionals participated in the study. The study participants were chosen using the stratified random sampling method. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality of participants. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression models were used. p ≤ 0.05 was used to declare statistically significant variables. Results The mean age of the study participants was 30.7 years (SD ± 6.3). The overall prevalence of poor sleep quality was 58.9% [95% CI (54.2, 63.6%)]. Being female [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.9, 95% CI (1.2, 2.9)], being a shift worker [AOR = 5.7, 95% CI (2.3, 14.3), not performing regular exercise [AOR = 2.08 (1.2-3.6)], being a khat chewer [AOR = 3.1, 95% CI (1.2, 7.6)], and having depressive symptoms [AOR = 2.6, 95% CI (1.3, 6.8)] were significantly associated with higher odds of having poor sleep quality. Conclusion The prevalence of poor sleep quality among healthcare professionals was found to be high. As a result, we recommend that healthcare providers at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital focus on early regular screening for sleep disturbances and pay special attention to shift work schedules and behaviors such as khat chewing, exercise, and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Background Insomnia affects the daily activities of the sufferers and reduces attention and memory. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an expensive treatment and is not applicable to all patients, and long-term treatment with sleep medication can have side effects such as drug dependency. As an alternative form of non-pharmacological treatments, the effect of exercise therapy on improving the symptoms of insomnia is addressed in the current study. Methods A total of 32 patients diagnosed with insomnia participated in the study, from which 16 received combined resistance-aerobic exercise therapy. The rest of the patients comprised the control group. The intervention group went through a 12-week intervention in the form of aerobic exercise for 3 days a week and resistance training for another 3 days a week. Patients' sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh test before and after the intervention. Results The results showed that combined aerobic-resistance exercise can improve sleep quality in patients with insomnia as well as increase subjective sleep quality and actual sleep duration, and decrease daytime dysfunction due to sleeping problems. Conclusions This study shows that, along with other insomnia treatments, exercise can improve the sleep quality of patients.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the sleep characteristics in the elderly Chinese people to comprehensively investigate the association between sleep and cognitive function in the elderly people. We aimed to evaluate the most important demographic factors, conventional physiological indices and living habits that may influence sleep. METHODS We surveyed 2901 elderly people (age ≥60 years old) face-to-face from 1 July to 31 December 2017, who were recruited from 17 communities of the Pudong New Area (Shanghai, China) by probability proportional to size. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scale was used to describe the sleep features of each participant. Cognitive assessment was performed using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scale, Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) and the clinical dementia rating (CDR) scale. Those factors which potentially influence sleep and consequentially may impact cognition in the elderly people were evaluated, and the correlations of sleep characteristics and cognitive function were explored by the linear regression analysis. RESULTS Altogether, there were 1287 (44.4%) people taking part in the investigation. Sleep quality was significantly correlated with MMSE and MoCA total scores. Healthy sleep (especially enough sleep) was correlated with better cognitive functions. Besides recognised relative factors (such as age, sex and living alone), the number of children was found to be a strong risk factor of poor sleep. Anxiety before sleep and light/noise interference significantly damaged sleep while an exercise routine was associated with better sleep. Moderate levels of reading, watching TV and household work were correlated with superior sleep quality. CONCLUSION In conclusion, sleep characteristics correlate with cognitive decline in the elderly people, and they can be influenced by multiple demographic factors and living habits. To improve sleep quality, it may be important to change sleep environment, to be relax, to increase physical exercise and recreational activities moderately.

Abstract
Poor sleep quality lessens general health quality and is related to physical and mental problems. Moreover, fatigue is one of the foremost common complaints in medical care and plays a role in the decreasing quality of life of the older population. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to examine the effect of high- and moderate-intensity interval training programs (HIIT vs. MIIT)-both consisting of twelve weeks of TRX training-on the sleep quality and fatigue levels of the elderly. A randomized controlled clinical trial (NCT03404830) was conducted. A total of 82 subjects were randomized to either a HIIT group (n = 28) that performed a main squat activity with a suspension system, comprising four four-minute intervals between 90-95% of the maximum heart rate (HR), an MIIT group (n = 27) with an intensity of 70% of the maximum HR, and a control group (CG) (n = 27) that continued their daily lifestyle. The two exercise groups trained twice a week for 12 weeks, with each session lasting 45 min. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and fatigue was assessed using the fatigue severity scale (FSS). Outcomes were measured before the intervention and after the intervention period. Post-intervention sleep quality measurements revealed a statistically significant interaction regarding group × time (p < 0.005) and fatigue (p = 0.002). Specifically, fatigue decreased in the HIIT group between both measurement moments (p = 0.003). In addition, differences were obtained in the post-intervention measure between the HIIT and MIIT groups (p = 0.013) and HIIT and control (p = 0.029). Our analysis indicates that a population of the elderly showed improvements in sleep quality and fatigue after performing a high-intensity intervention using suspension training (TRX), with markedly better results in the HIIT group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although exercise improves sleep parameters in older people, most studies have been designed for people with insomnia or sleep complaints. Little is known of the effects of exercise among older people without sleep problems. We investigated the effects of 3-month light-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise intervention on objectively measured sleep quantity and quality among community-dwelling older people. METHODS Fifty-eight community-dwelling older people were assigned into an exercise (EX) or control (CON) groups, and 49 participants (65.7 ± 5.7 years. BMI 24.4 ± 3.9 kg/m2) were enrolled in the analysis. EX group members attended 60 min/week group-based exercise program and performed ≥140 min of home-based exercise, at ≥50% of maximum heart rate to exceed 200 min of total exercise per week. Sleep was assessed by an accelerometer and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after intervention. RESULTS In the EX group, total sleep time, hours in waking after sleep onset, sleep efficiency and consecutive wake episodes ≥10 min (WE≥10 min) significantly improved (p<0.05). EX group showed a significantly greater reduction in WE≥10 min than the CON group (p<0.05). The subgroup analyses in the EX group according to baseline PSQI cutoff value showed no differences in changes between subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Three-month aerobic exercise improved objectively measured sleep quality in community-dwelling older people. Baseline sleep conditions did not significantly influence the magnitude of changes in sleep quality and quantity. These results suggest that light aerobic exercise can improve sleep among community-dwelling older people, regardless of baseline sleep status, but the effect may be small.

Abstract
Study Objectives: We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the effects of different regular exercise (lasting at least 2 months on a regular basis) on self-reported and physiological sleep quality in adults. Varied exercise interventions contained traditional physical exercise (e.g., walking, cycling) and mind-body exercise characterized by gentle exercise with coordination of the body (e.g., yoga). Methods: Procedures followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Systematical searches were conducted in three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) for relevant research that involved adult participants without pathological diseases receiving exercise intervention. The search strategy was based on the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome study design (PICOS) framework. The self-reported outcomes included varied rating scales of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Subgroup meta-analyses of PSQI scores were conducted based on type of exercise, duration of intervention, and participants' age and gender. The physiological outcomes were measured by Actigraph. All meta-analyses were performed in a fixed or random statistic model using Revman software. Results: Twenty-two randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis. The overall analysis on subjective outcomes suggests that exercise interventions significantly improved sleep quality in adults compared with control interventions with lower PSQI (MD -2.19; 95% CI -2.96 to -1.41), ISI (MD -1.52; 95% CI -2.63 to -0.41), and ESS (MD -2.55; 95% CI -3.32 to -1.78) scores. Subgroup analyses of PSQI scores showed both physical and mind-body exercise interventions resulted in improvements of subjective sleep to the same extent. Interestingly, short-term interventions (≤3 months) had a significantly greater reduction in sleep disturbance vs. long-term interventions (>3 months). Regarding physiological sleep, few significant effects were found in various sleep parameters except the increased sleep efficiency in the exercise group vs. control group. Conclusions: Results of this systematic review suggest that regular physical as well as mind-body exercise primarily improved subjective sleep quality rather than physiological sleep quality in adults. Specifically, self-reported sleep quality, insomnia severity, and daytime sleepiness could be improved or ameliorated with treatment of exercise, respectively, evaluated by PSQI, ISI, and ESS sleep rating scales.

Abstract
Purpose
Walking has beneficial effects on sleep quality in elderly population and patients in clinical settings. However, less is known whether walking improves sleep quality among healthy young adults. This study examined the effectiveness of a 12-week walking intervention on sleep quality among sedentary young adults.
Methods
Fifty-four healthy adults aged 19 to 36-years old participated a pedometer based aerobic walking intervention, a cross-over randomized control trial. Participants were assigned into two groups (group A and group B) randomly. The 12-week intervention was divided into three sessions equally. Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after session 1 and session 3. Omron HJ-112 pedometer and daily walking diary facilitated the intervention process. Within group and between group comparisons were made for statistical analysis.
Results
Within group comparison by repeated measures showed that sleep duration (p < 0.01, F-test 22.79), sleep medication (p < 0.05, F-test 5.22), subjective sleep (p < 0.05, F-test 5.51) and global sleep quality (p < 0.01, F-test 12.19) were significantly improved. The comparison between intervention group and control group showed that sleep disturbance was significantly improved (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
Daily walking exercise has a significant effect on facilitating sleep quality and sleep components among young adults. Further studies are suggested to examine the impact of walking intensity on sleep quality.

Abstract
Considering the presence of mental disorders during illness or old age, it is necessary to pay attention to the mental health of the elderly. A modeling of the God's attributes means that one understands God's perception of his/her existential poverty; and on the other hand, one endeavors to work in the human domain in order to replicate and utilize the names and attributes of God the Almighty. For this reason, this study aims to determine the mental health (MH) assessment of elderly people with chronic pain (CP) based on Quranic components. The study is a descriptive cross-sectional study. A total of 138 elderly people who are aged over 65 years and had history of CP were enrolled. Data were collected using Islamic Questionnaire of Identifying God's Traits in the same, and analysis was performed using SPSS ver. 16. The mean (SD) of age in elderly is 81.00 (12.07), and as the age increased, the God's Traits score of the elderly increased (p = 0.003, R = 0.34). The mean overall God's Traits score was 234.68 (3.61). In the elderly who lived with their spouse and had higher social support, the score of God's Traits was higher (p > 0.05), but there was no relationship between other demographic characteristics and status of God's Traits (p > 0.05). This study is the first study to evaluate the MH status of chronic patients based on Quranic components, and their MH status has been high. It is suggested that the relationship between MH based on Quranic components and variables related to health be measured.

Abstract
The aging process is characterized by a series of molecular and cellular changes over the years that could culminate in the deterioration of physiological parameters important to keeping an organism alive and healthy. Physical exercise, defined as planned, structured and repetitive physical activity, has been an important force to alter physiology and brain development during the process of human beings' evolution. Among several aspects of aging, the aim of this review is to discuss the balance between two vital cellular processes such as autophagy and apoptosis, based on the fact that physical exercise as a non-pharmacological strategy seems to rescue the imbalance between autophagy and apoptosis during aging. Therefore, the effects of different types or modalities of physical exercise in humans and animals, and the benefits of each of them on aging, will be discussed as a possible preventive strategy against neuronal death.

Abstract
The growth of elderly population is among the most important issues in the world, and religious interventions can help them to keep their health. For this reason, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of religious intervention on subjective vitality and sense of loneliness of the elderly referring to healthcare centers. This semi-experimental study was conducted on 88 elderlies referring to community healthcare centers of Ilam City. The elderlies were randomly assigned into test and control groups, and subjective vitality and sense of loneliness questionnaire was distributed to them. For the elderly in the test group, twelve 30-45-min sessions of religious intervention were held. Then, at intervals of immediately, 1 month, and 2 months after the study, the studied questionnaires were redistributed again among the elderly, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 16 and through descriptive statistics as well as repeated measures of analysis of variance. Before intervention, there was no difference between mental vitality and fear of loneliness in the elderly, but after intervention, the amount of mental vitality increased and fear of loneliness decreased. Since in this study, implementation of religious intervention resulted in improved subjective vitality and diminished sense of loneliness among the elderly, it is suggested that this effective intervention be also used in other studies.

The efficacy of mind-body (Baduanjin) exercise on self-reported sleep quality and quality of life in elderly subjects with sleep disturbances: a randomized controlled trial. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the efficacy of a 24-week Baduanjin exercise program on self-reported sleep quality and quality of life in community-dwelling elderly subjects with sleep disturbances. METHODS Community-dwelling elderly men and women meeting criteria for sleep disturbances (i.e., Pittsburgh Sleep Quality of Index (PSQI) score ≥ 5) were recruited and randomized to a Baduanjin exercise intervention group or a control group. Participants in the intervention group completed five 45-min exercise sessions per week for 24 weeks, while those in control group were instructed to maintain their usual lifestyle behaviors. RESULTS A total of 139 participants were enrolled and randomized. Sixty-two of 67 participants in the intervention group (response rate of 92.5%) and 57 of 72 participants (response rate of 79.6%) in the control group completed intervention and follow-up. The intervention group reported significant improvements in overall sleep quality after 24 weeks compared with those randomized to control (PSQI endpoint-to-baseline change = - 2.6 ± 4.0 vs. - 0.5 ± 4.2, time × group interaction p = 0.007). Intervention group participants had higher response rates at both week 12 (23.9% vs. 9.7%, p = 0.025) and week 24 (40.3% vs. 15.3%, p = 0.001) when compared with the control group. There was a trend that the intervention group had increased quality of life (The Short Form Health Survey [SF-36] endpoint=tobaseline change 6.3 ± 10.9 vs. 2.2 ± 10.9, time × group interaction p = 0.06) when compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS Baduanjin exercise is an effective and feasible approach to improve self-reported sleep quality but less likely the quality of life in community-dwelling elderly men and women with sleep disturbances. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the extent to which exercise is associated with symptoms in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS We included subjects with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) > 30 events/h who completed validated sleep and exercise questionnaires. We compared symptom frequency/scores between exercisers and nonexercisers, adjusting for the usual confounders. RESULTS The sample included 907 nonexercisers and 488 exercisers (mean age, 49 ± 14 years; mean AHI, 53 ± 20 events/h; 81% men). Nonexercisers and exercisers differed significantly in terms of obesity (72% vs. 54%), the mean proportion of sleep in non-rapid eye movement stage 3 sleep (9 ± 8% vs. 11 ± 6%), and tiredness (78% vs. 68%). Nonexercisers had a higher symptom frequency/scores and poorer sleep quality. Adjustment for exercise weakened the associations between individual symptoms and the AHI, indicating that exercise has a mitigating effect. In binary logistic models, exercise was associated with approximately 30% lower adjusted questionnaire1 score > 2, tiredness; poor-quality sleep, unrefreshing sleep, and negative mood on awakening. Although the odds of an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score > 10 were lower in exercisers, that association did not withstand adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSIONS Exercise is associated with lower frequency/intensity of symptoms in patients with severe OSA. Because up to one third of patients with severe OSA might exercise regularly and therefore be mildly symptomatic, it is important not to rule out a diagnosis of OSA in such patients.

Abstract
Religious Coping (RC) refers to the individual's ability to understand and cope with the stress in life. Attachment is a God relatively stable emotional bond that forms through continuous communication and requires interaction, pleasure and relaxation. Considering the increasing population of the elderly and the role of pain in their health status, the present study was conducted aimed to determine the relationship between RC and attachment to God with perceived pain in the elderly with chronic low back pain (CLBP) in Ilam in Iran. The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional one in the elderly group with chronic low back pain in 2018. A total of 300 elderly patients with chronic low back pain were enrolled using convenience sampling. The tools used included demographic characteristics form, religious coping questionnaire, attachment to God's questionnaire and perceived pain intensity questionnaire. The findings indicated that the mean (SD) of the total score of attachment to God variables was 65.71 (2.64), religious coping was 20.67 (2.59), chronic pain acceptance was 17.29 (6.66), and perceived pain was 5.81 (2.65). Also, there was a meaningful correlation between the intensity of the pain and the level of attachment to God and religious coping. Therefore, it is suggested that appropriate religious interventions for elderly patients with chronic pain should be undertaken to reduce their pain status in order to help improve their quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is often accompanied by decline in aspects of cognitive function. Cognitive decline has harmful effects on living independence and general health. Resistance training is seen as a promising intervention to prevent or delay cognitive deterioration, yet the evidence from reviews is less consistent. AIM To assess the effect of resistance training on cognition in the elderly with and without mild cognitive impairment and to provide an up-to-date overview. METHODS A search was conducted using PUBMED, Web of science, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Wan Fang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. The searches were limited to articles published in English or Chinese from January 2010 to September 2017. RESULTS The search returned 2634 records, of which 12 articles were included in the systematic review. Main results showed that resistance training had positive effects on the executive function and global cognitive function of the elderly, and short-term interventions had little positive effect on memory and attention. Secondary results demonstrated that there was a significant benefit of triweekly resistance training in global cognitive function and biweekly in executive function of the elderly. CONCLUSIONS Resistance training had positive effects on the executive cognitive ability and global cognitive function among the elderly; however, it had a weak-positive impact on memory. No significant improvement was found in attention. Triweekly resistance training has a better effect on general cognitive ability than biweekly. Further studies are needed focusing on the development and application of resistance training among the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This paper presents the objectives, research design, methodology, and primary findings of the Isfahan Comprehensive Elderly Study (ICES). MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 603 elderly persons (aged 60 and over) were selected by multistage cluster sampling method from Isfahan, Iran, in 2016 comprehensive questionnaires along with a detailed interview were used to collect information on personal, family, socioeconomic, health and social services characteristics, life styles, physical illnesses and chronic diseases, mental, emotional and cognition disorders, quality of life, disabilities, sleep quality, social supports, life satisfaction, self-efficacy, and of participants. RESULTS The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of participants was 69.66 ± 6.31 years, consisting of 50.75% females. About 23% of elderly persons were at the risk of malnutrition and 4.5% were current smoker. Severe and mild depression were documented in 9.3% and 30.2% among included study subjects, respectively. About half of the participants had hypertension, and 26.8% suffered from cardiovascular disease. The mean ± SD of total score of Geriatric Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Older People's Quality of Life, Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index was 8.84 ± 6.79, 14.76 ± 5.92, 133.99 ± 10.55, 142.04 ± 120.53, and 6.17 ± 3.44, respectively. Elderly males had significantly higher life satisfaction and self-efficacy and better cognitive function than females (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The findings of current study provided a comprehensive overview of the current health status and lifestyle of older adults in Isfahan city. The ICES could help policy makers to design appropriate prevention and interventional programs and policies to cover the specific needs of the elderly population.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and currently there are no effective disease-modifying treatments available. Hallmark symptoms of AD include impaired hippocampus-dependent episodic memory and disrupted sleep and circadian rhythms. The pathways connecting these symptoms are of particular interest because it is well established that sleep and circadian disruption can impair hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. In rodents, these procedures also markedly suppress adult hippocampal neurogenesis, a form of brain plasticity that is believed to play an important role in pattern separation, and thus episodic memory. A causal role for sleep disruptions in AD pathophysiology is suggested by evidence for sleep-dependent glymphatic clearance of metabolic waste products from the brain. This review explores a complementary hypothesis that sleep and circadian disruptions in AD contribute to cognitive decline by activating neuroendocrine and neuroinflammatory signaling pathways that suppress hippocampal neurogenesis. Evidence for this hypothesis underscores the promise of sleep, circadian rhythms, and neurogenesis as therapeutic targets for remediation of memory impairment in AD.
