Abstract
Introduction One of the most common causes of vision loss in the elderly population worldwide is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Subsequently, the number of people affected by AMD is estimated to reach approximately 288 million by the year 2040. The aim of this study was to develop an ex vivo model that simulates various aspects of the complex AMD pathogenesis. Methods For this purpose, primary porcine retinal pigment epithelial cells (ppRPE) were isolated and cultured. One group was exposed to medium containing sodium iodate (NaIO3) to induce degeneration. The others were exposed to different supplemented media, such as bovine serum albumin (BSA), homogenized porcine retinas (HPR), or rod outer segments (ROOS) for eight days to promote retinal deposits. Then, these ppRPE cells were cocultured with porcine neuroretina explants for another eight days. To assess the viability of ppRPE cells, live/dead assay was performed at the end of the study. The positive RPE65 and ZO1 area was evaluated by immunocytochemistry and the expression of RLBP1, RPE65, and TJP1 was analyzed by RT-qPCR. Additionally, drusen (APOE), inflammation (ITGAM, IL6, IL8, NLRP3, TNF), oxidative stress (NFE2L2, SOD1, SOD2), and hypoxia (HIF1A) markers were investigated. The concentration of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 was determined in medium supernatants from day 16 and 24 via ELISA. Results Live/dead assay suggests that especially exposure to NaIO3 and HPR induced damage to ppRPE cells, leading in a significant ppRPE cell loss. All supplemented media resulted in decreased RPE-characteristic markers (RPE65; ZO-1) and gene expression like RLBP1 and RPE65 in the cultured ppRPE cells. Besides, some inflammatory, oxidative as well as hypoxic stress markers were altered in ppRPE cells cultivated with NaIO3. The application of HPR induced an enhanced APOE expression. Pre-exposure of the ppRPE cells led to a diminished number of cones in all supplemented media groups compared to controls. Discussion Overall, this novel coculture model represents an interesting initial approach to incorporating deposits into coculture to mimic AMD pathogenesis. Nevertheless, the effects of the media used need to be investigated in further studies.

Abstract
Bone is a tissue that is active throughout the lifespan, and its physiological activities, such as growth, development, absorption, and formation, are always ongoing. All types of stimulation that occur in sports play an important role in regulating the physiological activities of bone. Here, we track the latest research progress locally and abroad, summarize the recent, relevant research results, and systematically summarize the effects of different types of exercise on bone mass, bone strength and bone metabolism. We found that different types of exercise have different effects on bone health due to their unique technical characteristics. Oxidative stress is an important mechanism mediating the exercise regulation of bone homeostasis. Excessive high-intensity exercise does not benefit bone health but induces a high level of oxidative stress in the body, which has a negative impact on bone tissue. Regular moderate exercise can improve the body's antioxidant defense ability, inhibit an excessive oxidative stress response, promote the positive balance of bone metabolism, delay age-related bone loss and deterioration of bone microstructures and have a prevention and treatment effect on osteoporosis caused by many factors. Based on the above findings, we provide evidence for the role of exercise in the prevention and treatment of bone diseases. This study provides a systematic basis for clinicians and professionals to reasonably formulate exercise prescriptions and provides exercise guidance for patients and the general public. This study also provides a reference for follow-up research.

Abstract
Background We aimed to explore the association between lipids and the survival and walking ability of hip fractures in geriatric patients after surgery. Methods Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was established to explore the nonlinear relationship between lipids and 1-year mortality of hip fractures, and the cut-off points were also determined by RCS. Then, the patients were divided into three groups: low, middle, and high levels of LDL-c. Then, the survival and walking ability of patients from different groups were compared, and the Cox regression and Logistics regression were used to identify the relationships between lipids and the survival and walking ability of hip fractures. Results The patients with middle levels of LDL-c had a significantly high survival probability than those with low or high levels of LDL-c (p < 0.001). The patients with low levels of LDL-c and with high levels of LDL-c may have a poor prognosis compared with patients with middle levels of LDL-c in 6-month mortality, 6-month free walking ability, 1-year mortality, and 1-year free walking ability (All p < 0.05). Conclusion Low and high levels of LDL-c may both relate to the poor survival and walking ability of hip fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many elder patients with hip fractures also suffered from hypertension. This study aims to explore the relationship between the use of ACEI or ARB and the outcomes of geriatric hip fractures. METHODS All the patients were divided into four groups: non-users without hypertension, non-users with hypertension, ACEI users, and ARB users. The outcomes of patients in different groups were compared. LASSO regression and univariable Cox analysis were used for variable screening. Then Cox models and Logistics models were established to identify the relationships between the use of RAAS inhibitors and outcomes. RESULTS ACER users (p = 0.016) and ARB users (p = 0.027) had a significantly lower survival probability than the non-users with hypertension. Non-users without hypertension, ACEI users, and ARB users may face lower 6-month and 1-year mortalities and higher 6-month and 1-year free walking rates compared with non-users with hypertension. CONCLUSION Patients with the use of ACEI or ARB may face a better prognosis of hip fractures.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia in geriatric hip fractures is attracting increased attention in recent years. This study aimed to explore the bibliometric characteristics and current status of sarcopenia research in hip fractures of older patients. Methods Publications related to sarcopenia in geriatric hip fracture published between January 2000 and July 2022 were extracted from the Science Citation Index Expanded, and bibliometric and visualized studies were performed by VOSviewer, Citespace, and R. Results The 1,223 articles used in our study were written by 6,326 authors from 1,879 organizations in 60 countries, published in 388 journals, and cited 37,198 references from 5,422 journals. The United States contributed the most publications (288 publications). The journal with the largest number of papers was Osteoporosis International (62 publications), and the Journals of Gerontology Series A - Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences had been more cited than any other journals in this field (3,302 citations). The University of Melbourne published the biggest number of papers (72 publications) focusing on sarcopenia in geriatric hip fractures while the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute had the largest citations (4,239 citations). Cawthon PM was the most productive and influential author in the field. keywords were classified into 6 clusters: Cluster 1 (sarcopenia in aging), Cluster 2 (osteoporosis), Cluster 3 (bone density), Cluster 4 (body composition), Cluster 5 (physical performance), and Cluster 6 (risk factor). Conclusion Geriatric hip fracture is one of the most significant health issues in the aging society. In the past 20 years, an increasing number of studies were performed to explore the relationship between sarcopenia and hip fracture in older adults. The United States showed the strongest influence in this field, including publication numbers, citations, institutions, funding agencies, and authorship. Sarcopenia in aging, osteoporosis, bone density, body composition, physical performance, and risk factors may become the future hotspots in this field.

Abstract
AIM Nutrition status may affect bone metabolism and regeneration in the elderly. However, few studies reported a sensitive nutrition indicator or evaluation tool for geriatric hip fractures. This study aimed to explore if prealbumin (PAB), a critical nutrition-related protein, is related to the prognosis of hip fractures. METHODS Patients with hip fractures who met the inclusion criteria were included in our study. Geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were calculated. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce the influence of confounding factors and ROC curves were conducted to explore the optimal cutoff points of PAB and to compare the prognostic value between GNRI, PNI, and PAB. Then Cox and Logistics analyses were performed to identify the relation between PAB and outcomes of hip fractures. RESULTS Out of the 546 patients enrolled in this study, 91 patients died within one year. After a 1:1 PSM, the patients with less than 1-year survival had significantly lower PAB (p < 0.001) than those who were still alive at one year. ROC curves showed that the PAB may sensitively predict 6-month survival (AUROC: 0.695), 1-year survival (AUROC: 0.696), and 1-year-free walking ability (AUROC: 0.642). Logistics analysis showed that low PAB may be an independent risk factor for survival and 1-year-free walking ability. CONCLUSION Low levels of PAB may be associated with poor survival and walking abilities of older patients after surgery for hip fracture.
