Abstract
BACKGROUND Worldwide, tuberculosis (TB) is a serious public health issue, especially in low-income countries, including Ethiopia. For those who are HIV-positive, TB poses a major risk to their health. The development of chemotherapy and the effectiveness of treatment have resulted in notable increases in patient survival. The evaluation of TB treatment outcomes is an essential metric for determining the success of TB and HIV co-morbidity control strategies. PURPOSE This study aims to identify TB treatment outcomes and associated factors among TB/HIV co-infected patients in public health facilities in Jigjiga, Somali Region, Ethiopia, in 2021. PATIENTS AND METHODS A hospital-based cross-sectional study design was done on three facilities (Karamara, Hasan Yabare Referral Hospital, and Jigjiga Health Center) with a total of 194 study participants. Data were extracted using a checklist, entered into EpiData version 3 (The EpiData Association, Odense, Denmark), and analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 20 (IBM Corp. Released 2011. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) for descriptive and inferential analysis of the study objectives. Variables in the bivariate logistic regression analysis with p-values less than 0.25 were entered into a multivariate logistic regression to identify the independent factors of TB treatment outcome. Associations were computed using an adjusted odds ratio with a 95% CI. P-values less than 0.05 were finally considered statistically significant. RESULTS The following TB treatment outcomes were observed among all TB/HIV co-infected patients enrolled in this study: 126 (67.4%) completed treatment, three (1.8%) died, 42 (22.5%) were cured, and 16 (8.6%) were transferred out; 168 (89.8%) had a successful treatment outcome. Category of the patient (AOR = 0.194, 95% CI: 0.041, 0.923), sex of the patient (AOR = 1.490, 95% CI: 1.449, 4.951), and cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT) initiation (AOR = 0.073, 95% CI: 0.021, 0.254) were found to be significant predictors for successful TB treatment outcome at a p-value less than 0.05 with a 95% CI. CONCLUSION Overall, 89.8% of TB treatments were successful among TB/HIV co-infected patients. This study has found sex, socioeconomic status, and CPT initiation were significant factors for a successful TB treatment outcome. Based on these findings, governmental and non-governmental organizations should facilitate the implementation and enforce the availability of all TB/HIV co-infected patients.

Abstract
Objectives The study determined tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes in Southern Ghana from 2012 to 2021. Methods A retrospective analysis of service data on TB cases was conducted. Treatment success was defined as TB cure or completion of treatment course, whereas unsuccessful outcomes was defined as death, failure of treatment and lost to follow up. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with treatment outcomes. Results A total of 4106 adult TB cases were reported with a median age of 41 (interquartile range 32-52) years. Of these, 93.1% (n = 3823) were newly diagnosed. The treatment success rate declined from 71.0% in 2012 to 55.7% in 2021 (ktau-b = -0.56, P = 0.0318). Clinically diagnosed TB and extra-pulmonary TB had 7.0% (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]: 0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88-1.00) and 24.0% (aPR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.69-0.84) respectively, less successful treatment outcome compared to pulmonary TB patients. HIV negative status was associated with 22% higher successful treatment outcome compared with being HIV positive (aPR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.12-1.33). Conclusion Tuberculosis treatment success rate declined over the period. There is a need for the TB Control Programme to review the national and sub-national TB data to ascertain poor performing TB treatment sites to identify and address context specific challenges with treatment interventions and system inadequacies to improve treatment success rates.

Abstract
Background The impact of diabetes mellitus on tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes has not been well investigated in most sub-Saharan countries including Ethiopia. The current study aimed to determine the association between diabetes mellitus and unsuccessful TB treatment outcomes among drug-susceptible TB patients treated at selected health facilities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods This health facility-based prospective cohort study was conducted at six randomly selected public health centers in Addis Ababa, from August 2020 until November 2021. Clinically diagnosed adult pulmonary and extra pulmonary TB patients were recruited at the time of treatment initiation. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between diabetes and unsuccessful TB treatment outcomes. Results Among the total 267 enrolled participants, 9.7% of patients with TB were identified to have diabetes comorbidity. Of patients with diabetes and TB, 9 (34.6%) were newly diagnosed based on glucose test results. Despite an overall high TB treatment success rate (94.0%), more than one-fourth (26.9%) of patients with diabetes had a poor TB treatment outcome (26.9%), which was remarkably higher compared to patients without diabetes (3.7%). In multivariable regression, the adjusted odds of poor TB treatment outcome among those with diabetes was 14.8 (95% CI 3.5 - 62.7) times the odds of poor outcome patients without diabetes. Conclusion Diabetes was significantly associated with increased odds of poor TB treatment outcomes among patients in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Abstract
(1) Background: Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a significant challenge for tuberculosis (TB) control, with increasing mortality rates worldwide. Moreover, the loss to follow-up is very high, with low adherence to treatment, resulting in unfavorable endpoints. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of TB treatment in patients coinfected with HIV/AIDS and its associated factors. (2) Methods: Patients coinfected with TB and HIV/AIDS at a Reference Hospital for infectious diseases were followed up for a maximum of one year from the start of TB treatment until cure or censorship (death, abandonment, and transfer) from 2015 to 2019. The Cox proportional model was used to identify risk factors for effectiveness. (3) Results: Of the 244 patients included in the cohort, 58.2% (142/244) had no treatment effectiveness, 12.3% (30/244) died, and 11.1% (27/244) abandoned treatment. Viral suppression at the onset of TB treatment (HR = 1.961, CI = 1.123-3.422), previous use of Antiretroviral Therapy (HR = 1.676, CI = 1.060-2.651), new cases (HR = 2.407, CI = 1.197-3.501), not using illicit drugs (HR = 1.763, CI = 1.141-2.723), and using the basic TB regimen (HR = 1.864, CI = 1.084-3.205) were significant variables per the multivariate Cox regression analysis. (4) Conclusion: TB treatment for most TB patients coinfected with HIV/AIDS was not effective. This study identified that an undetectable viral load at the beginning of the disease, previous use of ART, not using illicit drugs and not having previously taken anti-TB treatment are factors associated with successful TB treatment.

Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) co-infection has become a pressing global public health problem. Although tuberculosis (TB) is both treatable and curable, it has been exacerbated by the HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. HIV-MTB co-infected patients have a variety of disease-specific, and treatment-related factors that can adversely affect their treatment outcomes. This study was conducted to assess the outcomes of TB treatment and its associated factors among HIV-MTB co-infected patients in Sichuan, Southwest China. A retrospective study was performed on HIV-MTB co-infected patients who were diagnosed and registered in TB designated hospitals in Sichuan from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020. Data were collected from patients' electronic medical records regarding their demographic, clinical, and social support information, and categorical data, such as sex, were reported using numbers and percentages. χ2 and t-tests were conducted to compare groups in relation to different levels of medical institutions. A binary logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with unsuccessful TB treatment outcomes. For logistic regression analysis performed using an α of 0.05, odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for various risk factors. A total of 3677 registered HIV-MTB co-infected patients were enrolled. After adjusting for other variables, male, advanced age, receiving TB treatment at the municipal medical institution, being diagnosed with external pulmonary TB, referral or tracing, being sputum smear positive, not initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) and not using fixed-dose combinations were the main risk factors for treatment failure of HIV-MTB co-infected patients in Sichuan province. Sex, age, hospital level, patient source, other diagnostic factors (e.g., sputum smear results, anatomical site of TB), and factors of therapeutic schemes (e.g., antiretroviral therapy, fixed-dose combinations) may serve as risk factors to estimate the likely treatment outcome of HIV-TB co-infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The commonest causes of mortality in people living with HIV (PLHIV) are preventable and the majority can be attributed to undiagnosed tuberculosis (TB). National HIV/AIDS control programs are encouraged to implement the WHO package of interventions to improve survival among PLHIV. We assessed the implementation of the WHO TB-related package of care for Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) and its impact on treatment outcomes among HIV/TB patients in Tanzania. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was employed among HIV/AIDS patients on antiretroviral therapy from 21 public health facilities in three regions (Dar es Salaam, Coastal, and Morogoro) of Tanzania. Patients enrolled in care between January 2013- June 2017 (before the introduction of the WHO guidelines) and July 2017-Sept 2018 (during the implementation of the guidelines) were recruited. Data abstraction was done from patient hospital files using a structured questionnaire uploaded on a tablet. RESULTS Data from 2624 patients records were collected. Overall, 50% of patients with HIV had AHD with 7.8% of these co-infected with TB. Among AHD participants, 58.3% were female, 80.7% were from urban areas and 40.0% visited care and treatment centres as self-referrals. Implementation of the WHO AHD package of care was very low, ranging from 0% for Urine LF-LAM test done among patients with symptoms and signs of TB to 39.7% AHD concurrent with TB patients whose ART initiation was deferred for 2 weeks. Overall, the Proportion of AHD patients diagnosed with TB was 4.8%, Of which sputum Xpert as the first test for TB diagnosis was 4.4%. Five patients (0.6%) were documented to have received IPT at enrolment. Tailored counselling to ensure optimal adherence to ART for viral suppression was given to 12.1%. AHD patients co-infected with TB were retained in care more before the introduction of WHO AHD guideline (82.1%) compared to the period after the introduction of the guideline (53.9%) (p = 0.008). Clinical failure at 6 months among AHD patients was 10.6% before the guideline and 11.4% after the guideline. Immunological failure was observed in 1 patient (9.1%) before the guideline and 1 patient (7.1%) after the guideline. After the introduction of the guideline, mortality was 5.9% and no mortality was observed before the guideline. All the differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Implementation of the TB related WHO packages of care for AHD is very low. Except for TB diagnosis, other parameters did not improve with the introduction of the guidelines. More research is recommended to ascertain the effectiveness of guidelines as well as an understanding of the mechanisms involved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, the Tuberculosis treatment success rate was worse for HIV-positive TB patients compared with HIV- negative TB patients. This study aimed at determining the impact of HIV-AIDS and factors associated with TB treatment outcomes. METHODS This study was a retrospective cohort study of five years of tuberculosis data from four public health facilities in Hosanna Town. A total of 604 study participants were included using a systematic random sampling technique. Descriptive analysis of ratios, rates, and proportions was done and binary logistic regression, bivariable and multivariable, analysis was also done. RESULT A total of 604 TB patients were enrolled in this study. 302 (50%) were HIV co-infected. The overall treatment success rate was 90.1% (544/604). Treatment success rates are 86.4% (261/302) for TB-HIV co-infected patients and 93.7% (283/302) for non-co-infected patients. TB-HIV co-infected patients had a higher risk of an unsuccessful treatment outcome (Adjusted Relative Risk [ARR]: 2.7; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.4 - 5.2). The risk of unsuccessful treatment outcome is also higher among rural residents (ARR: 3.3; CI: 1.4 - 5.0), patients on the re-treatment category (ARR: 2.7; CI: 1.4 - 5.1), and with chronic disease (ARR: 3.3; CI: 1.3 - 8.1). CONCLUSION TB treatment success rate is good as compared to the WHO minimum requirement. Successful treatment outcome is lower among patients with HIV infection, rural residents, patients on re-treatment, and patients with chronic disease. Therefore, due emphasis should be given to these high-risk groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tuberculosis (TB) is the global leading cause of death from an infectious agent. Tanzania is among the 30 high TB burden countries with a mortality rate of 47 per 100,000 population and a case fatality of 4%. This study assessed mortality rate, survival probabilities, and factors associated with death among adult TB patients on TB treatment in Tanzania. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted utilizing case-based national TB program data of adult (≥15 years) TB cases enrolled on TB treatment from January 2017 to December 2017. We determined survival probabilities using the Kaplan-Meier estimator and a Cox proportional hazard model was used to identify independent risk factors of TB mortality. Hazard ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals were reported. RESULTS Of 53,753 adult TB patients, 1927 (3.6%) died during TB treatment and the crude mortality rate was 6.31 per 1000 person-months. Male accounted for 33,297 (61.9%) of the study population and the median (interquartile range [IQR]) age was 40 (30-53) years. More than half 1027 (56.7%) of deaths occurred in first two months of treatment. Overall survival probabilities were 96%, and 92% at 6th and 12th month respectively. The independent risk factors for TB mortality among TB patients included: advanced age ≥ 45 years (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 1.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.45-2.08); receiving service at the hospital level (aHR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.09-1.36); TB/HIV co-infection (aHR = 2.51, 95% CI = 2.26-2.79); facility-based direct observed therapy (DOT) option (aHR = 2.23, 95% CI = 1.95-2.72); having bacteriological unconfirmed TB results (aHR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.42-1.76); and other referral type (aHR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.16-1.78). CONCLUSION Advanced age, TB/HIV co-infection, bacteriological unconfirmed TB results, other referral types, receiving service at facility-based DOT option and obtaining service at the hospital level were significant contributors to TB death in Tanzania. Appropriate targeted intervention to improve TB referral systems, improve diagnostic capacity in the primary health facilities, minimize delay and misdiagnosis of TB patients might reduce TB mortality.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health problem. Hence, the study aimed to assess the impact of human immune virus (HIV) status and predictors of successful treatment outcomes of TB patients enrolled at Nekemte specialized hospital. An institution-based retrospective cohort study was conducted and the data analyzed using SPSS version 24.0. A multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to identify the association between treatment outcome and potential predictor variables. The association was calculated using the Adjusted Odds ratio (AOR) and the statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. Out of the total 506 study participants, 50.2% of them were males. The overall treatment success rate was 81.4% and 58.06% among HIV co-infected TB patients. Female sex (AOR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.04–16.11), age 25–34 years (AOR = 3.982, 95%CI: 1.445–10.971), age 35–49 years (AOR = 5.392, 95%CI: 1.674–17.368), high school educational level (AOR = 5.330, 95% CI: 1.753–16.209), urban residence (AOR = 3.093, 95%CI: 1.003–9.541) and HIV negative (AOR = 10.3, 95%CI, 3.216–32.968) were positively associated with favorable TB treatment outcome. Whereas, being single (AOR = 0.293, 95%CI: 0.1–0.854), smear-negative pulmonary TB (AOR = 0.360, 95%CI: 0.156–0.834), extra-pulmonary TB (AOR = 0.839, 95%CI: 0.560–0.955) and retreatment case (AOR: 0.54, 95%CI: 0.004–0.098) were negatively associated with successful treatment outcome. The treatment success rate of TB patients was lower than World Health Organization target set of 85%. The increased unsuccessful outcome among TB/HIV patients requires urgent public health interventions to improve the evaluation policy and control framework. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health problem. TB is the leading cause of death for HIV-infected patients, and HIV is also risk factor for developing active TB. The co-infection has emerged as a major public health threat throughout the world and have worse treatment outcomes. Management of co-infected patients can be complex because of overlapping drug toxicities and interactions. The increased unsuccessful outcome among TB/HIV patients requires urgent public health interventions.

Abstract
Background Despite the availability of effective drugs, tuberculosis remains a major public health problem that predominantly affects low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to assess tuberculosis treatment outcomes among patients treated at one of the primary health care levels in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods An institutional-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at a tuberculosis clinic in public primary healthcare facility. The study populations were all patients with tuberculosis who had been completed their treatment course in the center from July 2014 to July 2018. After getting Ethical clearance and permission from the health center, trained data collectors working in the center were recruited. The collected data were checked for completeness every day by the principal investigators. Data were edited, cleaned, and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data while multinomial logistic regression was employed to explore associations among variables of interest, and p < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results A total of 352 patients with tuberculosis were included for the study with a median age of 25 years which ranged from 1 to79 year. Most (36.4%) participants were in the age group of 15 to 24 years. The majority (38.8%) of patients had extrapulmonary tuberculosis, 11.9% of them were HIV positive and only two had family history of tuberculosis. Regarding treatment outcome, 238(67.6%) completed the treatment, 95(27%) cured and the rest were unsuccessful treatment outcomes 19(5.4%) either died, defaulted or treatment failed. The odds ratio for cured in relation to unsuccessful treatment outcome was found to be significantly higher in HIV negative patients (AOR = 6.1; 95%CI 2.1–13.9) compared with those patients tested positive for HIV. While patients with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (AOR = 10.5, 95% CI 5.36–16.31) were significantly associated with the odds of having complete treatment cure as compared to patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Similarly being HIV positive and extrapulmonary tuberculosis were predicting factors for unsuccessful treatment compared with their counterparts. Conclusions The finding of the present study showed that successful tuberculosis treatment outcome was found to be optimal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) remains a petrified condition with a huge economic and health impact on families and health systems in Ghana. Monitoring of TB programme performance indicators can provide reliable data for direct measurement of TB incidence and mortality. This study reflects on the trends of TB case notification and treatment outcomes and makes comparison among 10 districts of the Volta region of Ghana. METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of surveillance data of a cohort of TB cases from 2013 to 2017. Trends of case notification and treatment outcomes were examined and compared. Logistic regression was used to determine the independent relationship between patients and disease characteristics and unsuccessful treatment outcomes. Odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals and p-values were estimated. RESULTS A gradual declining trend of case notification of all forms of TB was noticed, with an overall case notification rate (CNR) of 65 cases per 100,000 population during the period. A wide variation of case notification of TB was observed among the districts, ranging from 32 to 124 cases per 100,000 population. Similarly, treatment success rate decreased slightly from 83.1% during the first year to 80.2% in 2017, with an overall treatment success rate of 82.5% (95% CI: 81.3-83.8%). Treatment failure, death, and lost to follow up rates were 0.8% (range 0.5-1.2%), 13.5% (range 12.4-14.7%), and 3.1% (range 2.6-3.8%) respectively. The treatment success rate among districts ranged from 70.5% in South Tongu to 90.8% in Krachi West district. Returned after treatment interruption (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 3.62; 95% CI: 1.66-7.91; P < 0.001) and TB/HIV co-infection (AOR: 1.94; 95% CI: 1.57-2.40; P < 0.001) predicts poor treatment outcomes. CONCLUSION Over the past five years, TB case notification and successful treatment outcomes did not significantly improve. Wide district variations in CNR was observed. The overall treatment success rate observed in this study is below the target of > 90% set by the World Health Organization's (WHO) end TB strategy. Additionally, patients who returned to continue treatment after interruption and those who were co-infected with HIV strongly predict unsuccessful treatment outcomes. Sustained interventions to prevent treatment interruptions and improved management of co-morbidities can enhance treatment outcomes, as required to achieve the elimination goal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The bidirectional relationship between the twin epidemics of Tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes major global health challenges in the twenty-first century. TB-HIV co-infected people are facing multifaceted problems like high lost to follow up rates, poor treatment adherence, high TB recurrence rate, and high mortality risk. Our objective was to assess the outcomes of TB treatment and associated factors among TB-HIV co-infected patients in Harar town, Eastern part of Ethiopia, 2018. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted among systematically selected 349 TB/HIV co-infected patients who registered from 2012 to 2017 in two public hospitals in Harar town. The data were collected through document review by using a pre-tested structured data extraction checklist. The data were analyzed using SPSS Version 21. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were determined at 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS Among the 349 TB/HIV co-infected patients included in the study, 30.1% were cured, 56.7% had completed their treatment, 7.7% died, 1.7% were lost to follow up, and 3.7% were treatment failure. Overall, 86.8% of the TB-HIV co-infected patients had successful TB treatment outcomes. The patients who were on re-treatment category (AOR = 2.91, 95% CI: 1.17-7.28), who had a history of opportunistic infection (AOR = 3.68, 95% CI: 1.62-8.33), and who did not take co-trimoxazole prophylaxis (AOR = 3.54, 95% CI: 1.59-7.89) had 2.91, 3.68, and 3.54 times higher odds of having unsuccessful TB treatment outcome than their counterparties, respectively. The chance of unsuccessful TB treatment outcome was 4.46 (95% CI: 1.24-16.02), 5.94 (95% CI: 1.87-18.85), and 3.01 (95% CI: 1.15-7.91) times higher among TB/HIV patients in stage 2, 3 and 4 than those in stage 1, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The overall rate of the success of the TB treatment among TB-HIV co-infected patients in this study was higher compared with many previous studies. TB/HIV patients with a history of previous TB treatment, smear-positive pulmonary TB, late HIV stage, history of opportunistic infection and not being on co-trimoxazole prophylaxis therapy were at a high risk of getting poor treatment outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To summarise treatment success rate (TSR) among adult bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis (BC-PTB) patients in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). DESIGN We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google Scholar and Web of Science electronic databases for eligible studies published in the decade between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2018. Two independent reviewers extracted data and disagreements were resolved by consensus with a third reviewer. We used random-effects model to pool TSR in Stata V.15, and presented results in a forest plot with 95% CIs and predictive intervals. We assessed heterogeneity with Cochrane's (Q) test and quantified with I-squared values. We checked publication bias with funnel plots and Egger's test. We performed subgroup, meta-regression, sensitivity and cumulative meta-analyses. SETTING SSA. PARTICIPANTS Adults 15 years and older, new and retreatment BC-PTB patients. OUTCOMES TSR measured as the proportion of smear-positive TB cases registered under directly observed therapy in a given year that successfully completed treatment, either with bacteriologic evidence of success (cured) or without (treatment completed). RESULTS 31 studies (2 cross-sectional, 1 case-control, 17 retrospective cohort, 6 prospective cohort and 5 randomised controlled trials) involving 18 194 participants were meta-analysed. 28 of the studies had good quality data. Egger's test indicated no publication bias, rather small study effect. The pooled TSR was 76.2% (95% CI 72.5% to 79.8%; 95% prediction interval, 50.0% to 90.0%, I2 statistics=96.9%). No single study influenced the meta-analytical results or conclusions. Between 2008 and 2018, a gradual but steady decline in TSR occurred in SSA but without statistically significant time trend variation (p=0.444). The optimum TSR of 90% was not achieved. CONCLUSION Over the past decade, TSR was heterogeneous and suboptimal in SSA, suggesting context and country-specific strategies are needed to end the TB epidemic. Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of drug therapy problem in the treatment of patients with tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Methods: Data were obtained through a cross-sectional study conducted between September 2015 and December 2016 at a reference hospital in infectious diseases in Belo Horizonte (MG), Brazil. Sociodemographic, clinical, behavioral and pharmacotherapeutic variables were evaluated through a semi-structured questionnaire. Drug-related problems of pharmaceutical care were classified using the Pharmacotherapy Workup method. Factors associated with indication, effectiveness, safety and compliance drug therapy problem were assessed through multiple logistic regression. Results: We evaluated 81 patients, and 80% presented at least one drug therapy problem, with indication and adherence drug therapy problem being the most frequent. The factors associated with drug therapy problem were age, marital status, new case, ethnicity, time of HIV diagnosis and time to treat tuberculosis. Conclusion: The frequency of drug therapy problem in coinfected patients was high and the identification of the main drug therapy problem and associated factors may lead the multiprofessional health team to ensure the use of the most indicated, effective, safe and convenient medicines for the patients clinical condition. Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS coinfected individuals aged over 40 years are more likely to have drug therapy problems during treatment; in that, the most frequente are those that signal toward need of medication for an untreated health condition and non-compliance to treatment. Thus, older patients, unmarried or married, who have treated tuberculosis before, with a shorter time to tuberculosis treatment and longer time to diagnose HIV/AIDS, should receive special attention and be better followed by a multiprofessional health team because they indicate a higher chance of presenting Problems related to the use of non-adherent drugs.

Abstract
Background Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV co-infection challenges treatment and worsens the outcome of TB treatment. This study aimed to assess the outcome of TB treatment and factors facilitating treatment success among people living with HIV/AIDS in Fako Division of the South West Region of Cameroon. Methods A hospital-based retrospective cohort study was conducted by manually reviewing medical records of HIV/TB co-infected patients from January 2010 to September 2017. A structured data collection form was used to review the medical records of HIV patients co-infected with TB aged 10 years and older. Patients with incomplete files were dropped from the study. Treatment success was defined as the sum of patients who were declared cured and those who had completed treatment, as per the World Health Organization’s recommendations. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 21. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression model was carried out to identify factors facilitating successful TB treatment outcome. Significance was obtained through adjusted odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval and a p<0.05. Results A total of 2,986 files were reviewed but 2,928 (98.1%) were retained. Out of the 2,928 medical files of adult TB patients reviewed, 1,041 (35.6%, [95% CI 33.8%-37.3%]) were HIV/TB co-infected. The 1,041 co-infected patients had a mean age of 37.07 (SD of10.02) years and 56.3% were females. The treatment outcome of TB patients were 795(76.4%) cured, 23(2.2%) treatment completed, 99(9.5%) were lost to follow-up, 16 (1.5%) failed, 72(6.9%) died and 36(3.5%) transferred out. A successful treatment outcome was achieved in 818(78.6%,[95% CI: 76.0%–81.0%]) patients. Being a female [COR 1.61, 95% CI: 1.19–2.17, p = 0.002], receiving TB treatment in 2014 [COR 2.00, 95% CI: 1.11–3.60, p = 0.021] and 2015 [COR 2.50, 95% CI: 1.39–4.50, p = 0.002], having relapsed TB infection [COR 0.46, 95% CI: 0.23–0.93, p = 0.031], receiving ART [COR 1.95, 95% CI: 1.28–2.97, p = 0.002] and Cotrimoxazole [COR 2.03, 95% CI: 1.12–3.66, p = 0.019] were factors significantly associated with successful treatment. After adjusting for confounders, successful treatment outcome were associated with being a female [AOR 1.6; 95% CI: 1.21–2.22, p = 0.001], diagnosis of TB in 2014 [AOR 1.90; 95% CI: 1.04–3.45, p = 0.036] and 2015 [AOR 2.43; 95% CI: 1.33–4.43, p = 0.004]. Conclusion There is a high TB treatment success rate among HIV/TB co-infected patients in our setting, although below the target set by the WHO. Specific interventions aimed at enhancing patient outcomes are recommended.

Abstract
Background: Appearance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in the sputum of a tuberculosis (TB)/human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infected patient under treatment may indicate either failure or new infection. This study aims
to evaluate whether TB treatment failure among TB/HIV co-infected patients is a real failure. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted among 566 TB/HIV co-infected patients who started TB treatment in 12 townships
in the upper Myanmar. Among the 566 participants, 16 (2.8%) resulted in treatment failure. We performed a molecular study
using mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable number of tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR) genotyping for them. The
MIRU-VNTR profiles were analyzed using the web server, MIRU-VNTRplus. All data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and
analyzed using R version 3.4.3. Results: Among 16 failure patients, seven had incomplete laboratory results. Of the nine remaining patients, nobody had exactly
the same MIRU-VNTR pattern between the initial and final isolates. Four patients had persistent East-African Indian (EAI)
lineages and one each had persistent Beijing lineage, changing from EAI to Beijing, from Beijing to EAI, NEW-1 to Beijing, and
NEW-1 to X strains. Female patients have significantly larger genetic difference between MTB of the paired isolates than male
patients (t-test, P = 0.04). Conclusion: Thus, in our study patients, infection of multiple MTB strains is a possible cause of TB treatment failure. Explanation
for the association between gender and distance of genotypes from the initial to subsequent MTB infection needs further
studies.

Identification of Mycobacterial Ribosomal Proteins as Targets for CD4 + T Cells That Enhance Protective Immunity in Tuberculosis. Infect Immun 2018; 86:IAI.00009-18. Abstract
Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains a threat to global health, and a more efficacious vaccine is needed to prevent disease caused by M. tuberculosis We previously reported that the mycobacterial ribosome is a major target of CD4+ T cells in mice immunized with a genetically modified Mycobacterium smegmatis strain (IKEPLUS) but not in mice immunized with Mycobacterium bovis BCG. Two specific ribosomal proteins, RplJ and RpsA, were identified as cross-reactive targets of M. tuberculosis, but the breadth of the CD4+ T cell response to M. tuberculosis ribosomes was not determined. In the present study, a library of M. tuberculosis ribosomal proteins and in silico-predicted peptide libraries were used to screen CD4+ T cell responses in IKEPLUS-immunized mice. This identified 24 out of 57 M. tuberculosis ribosomal proteins distributed over both large and small ribosome subunits as specific CD4+ T cell targets. Although BCG did not induce detectable responses against ribosomal proteins or peptide epitopes, the M. tuberculosis ribosomal protein RplJ produced a robust and multifunctional Th1-like CD4+ T cell population when administered as a booster vaccine to previously BCG-primed mice. Boosting of BCG-primed immunity with the M. tuberculosis RplJ protein led to significantly reduced lung pathology compared to that in BCG-immunized animals and reductions in the bacterial burdens in the mediastinal lymph node compared to those in naive and standard BCG-vaccinated mice. These results identify the mycobacterial ribosome as a potential source of cryptic or subdominant antigenic targets of protective CD4+ T cell responses and suggest that supplementing BCG with ribosomal antigens may enhance protective vaccination against M. tuberculosis.
