Abstract
Background and Objectives: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most frequent cause of acute flaccid paresis in children. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and electrophysiological findings and outcomes of children with GBS diagnosed in our unit. Moreover, the literature on pediatric GBS cases from the past 5 years was reviewed. In this retrospective study, we reported data on 12 patients (9 male and 3 female patients; mean age: 5 y, 4 mo; range: 9 mo-11 y) clinically diagnosed at the Child Neurology Unit of the AUSL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia, Italy, between 2000 and 2017 and a brief analysis/comparison with data from the literature. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from medical charts. Results: In our cohort, male patients were more frequent than female ones (9 vs. 3), and upper respiratory tract infection (n = 8, 66.7%) was the most frequent triggering factor. The main clinical symptoms on admission were distal lower limbs' weakness with gait difficulties (83.3%), pain (50%), upper limbs' weakness (50%), and dysphagia for liquids (25%). Peripheral neurophysiological studies revealed acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) in 66.6% of the children, acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN) in 25%, and acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) in 8.3%. Ten individuals (83.3%) received timely treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG), and, out of these ten patients, 58% received concomitant treatment with IV methylprednisolone because of a progressive disease course. Complete remission was observed in the majority of individuals (91.6%) within 6 months of symptom onset. Conclusions: Different subtypes of GBS can affect children; however, the outcome is usually positive. Early treatment appears to be important for a favorable outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the leading cause of non-polio acute flaccid paralysis worldwide, emphasizing the importance of epidemiological studies on this condition. Therefore, well-designed epidemiological studies in different populations can provide a better understanding of the characteristics of patients with GBS and the nature of the disease. To our knowledge, no previous study has attempted to describe the characteristics of patients with GBS in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) based on disease subtypes and clinical features in both adult and pediatric patients. This study aimed to assess the frequencies of GBS subtypes and their relationships with patient characteristics and clinical data in a tertiary hospital in Jeddah, KSA. METHODS This was a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with GBS between January 2000 and January 2018 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), a tertiary center in Jeddah, KSA. RESULTS In total, 47 patients with GBS (median age: seven years for pediatric and 36 years for adult patients) were included in the current study. There were six male and three female pediatric patients and 19 male and 19 female adult patients. Among patients with GBS who were classified into a specific electrophysiological subtype (n = 28), 13 (46.2%) had acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP), 11 (39%) had an axonal subtype, and four (14%) had Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS). Patients required prolonged hospitalization of approximately 20 ± 22 days (2.83 ± 3.11 weeks). Patients with MFS were more likely to have higher cytoalbuminologic dissociation than those with other subtypes. CONCLUSION AIDP was the most frequent type of GBS, followed by the axonal type. Patients required prolonged hospitalization of approximately 20 ± 22 days (2.83 ± 3.11 weeks). Patients with MFS were more likely to have higher cytoalbuminologic dissociation than those with other subtypes. GBS type did not show a relationship with ICU admission or mechanical ventilation use. There was no association between specific therapies and different GBS subtypes and no significant difference in outcomes between different patterns of clinical presentation. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) and plasma exchange (PE) treatments both had the same efficacy in relation to outcomes for patients with GBS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of acute, usually post-infectious, peripheral neuropathy resulting in a symmetrical, ascending paralysis. We evaluated the clinical and neurophysiological features, treatment, and outcomes of patients with GBS in our center. METHODS A retrospective chart review on patients with GBS admitted to King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from January 2011 to December 2020. Data were analyzed using JMP statistical software version 15 pro. RESULTS A total of 86 patients who met the criteria were included, 55 (64%) were males, with a mean age of 49.5+/-17.5 years. Antecedent infection was reported in 53 (61.6%), 51 (62.2%) presented within one week of symptoms onset. Ascending weakness was seen in 55 (70.5%), while 70 (81.4%) had areflexia. Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) was the commonest electrophysiological type of GBS in 41 (51.9%) patients. Albuminocytologic dissociation was seen in 48 (57%) who had lumbar puncture. Nearly half, 41 (47.7%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Seventy (81.3%) were treated with intravenous immunoglobulin. There was no significant difference in the clinical presentation, management, ICU requirement, and discharge disposition between males and females. Females were more likely to have a higher disability at discharge (p=0.01). Patients younger than 60 years were more likely to require ICU admission (p=<0.01). CONCLUSION Our patients with GBS were slightly older than previously reported from the region. AMAN was the commonest type of GBS. Younger patients were more likely to need ICU admission, whereas females were more likely to have a more severe disability.

Abstract
Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) is a rare immune-mediated disorder characterized by acute flaccid paralysis with elevated levels of GM1 antibodies. It is also known as a subtype of the Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and develops since antigen s serve as antibodies in the spinal cord. We report a case diagnosed as AMAN with symptoms of ascending limb symmetrical weakness. A neurological examination revealed a flaccid paralysis with multiple cranial nerve palsies. Electromyography showed an axonal type of GBS. The patient refused bone marrow fluid aspiration. Intravenous immunoglobulin was administered at the high care unit. Unfortunately, despite the standard therapy, an optimal recovery was not obtained. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has been known to be common in illnesses and some clinical diseases. Although it has not been indicated for peripheral neuropathy, a remarkable recovery was soon visible in the HBO-treated AMAN case. The HBO mechanisms involved here are anti-inflammation and immunomodulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is the commonest cause of acute flaccid paralysis in children. There is a paucity of studies that assess the long-term outcome of paediatric GBS. AIM To assess the frequency of neurological sequelae and the new-onset symptoms in the long-term follow-up of paediatric GBS and to identify the risk factors associated with them. METHODS This longitudinal study involved 78 children with GBS treated between January 2015 and 2021. The parents of those children were contacted to visit the hospital for a detailed neurological examination and to look for new-onset symptoms after the initial treatment for GBS. RESULTS Of the 78 children, acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, acute motor axonal neuropathy, and acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy variants were observed in 30 (38.5%), 27 (34.6%) and 11 (14.1%) children, respectively. The median (interquartile range (IQR)) duration of follow-up was 3 (2, 4.5) years. The median (IQR) time to independent ambulation was 30 (13.5, 105) days. The neurological sequelae were found in 22 (28.2%) children. GBS disability score at admission (odds ratio (OR) = 4.6; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1-19.8; P = 0.04) and axonal variant of GBS (OR = 4.1; 95% CI: 1.5-20.8; P = 0.04) were found to be independent predictors of neurologic sequelae. A total of 28 children experienced new-onset symptoms after GBS, with frequent falls while running and fatigue being the predominant symptoms. Those children with demyelinating variant achieved independent ambulation earlier than the axonal group on survival analysis (log-rank P value = 0.04). CONCLUSION The presence of neurological sequelae and new-onset symptoms were found in 28.2 and 35% of the GBS children, respectively. High GBS disability score at admission and axonal variant of GBS were independent predictors of neurological sequelae. Knowledge about these would help in devising a plan for rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the world topsy turvy since its emergence and has claimed innumerable lives worldwide. Neurological manifestations of the disease have raised several eyebrows around the world among which Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) deserve special mention. Although majority of the cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) present with respiratory symptoms, extrapulmonary manifestations are being increasingly reported. We conducted this study to analyze detailed clinical presentations and outcome in a series of eight cases (n = 8) with COVID-19 associated GBS. METHODS An observational prospective study was conducted among patients with post-infectious/para-infectious GBS. 8 patients were subclassified into acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP), acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN) as per electrodiagnostic criteria and were followed up from admission to 6 months post discharge, to obtain a comprehensive clinical profile and outcome in these patients. RESULTS The diagnosis of GBS was confirmed as per Asbury criteria, supported by electrodiagnostic features in nerve conduction velocity test. Among the series of 8 patients, 3 were diagnosed as AIDP, 3 had AMAN and the remaining 2 patients had AMSAN. 3 patients of GBS were afebrile and were diagnosed as COVID-19 after a positive assay on routine screening. Cerebro-spinal fluid analysis for SARS-Cov-2 RT-PCR and serum anti-ganglioside antibodies were negative in all the patients. CONCLUSION GBS in patients with COVID-19 should be differentiated from critical illness neuropathy and myopathy. Early diagnosis is important as it is associated with poor outcome and prolonged invasive ventilation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is considered an acute immune-mediated monophasic illness. Standard therapy includes intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and/or plasmapheresis. Yet, long-standing disability remains a problem. In Indonesia, the availability and cost of these therapies are constraints.
AIM: To show the capability of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy in GBS patients who did not undergo standard therapy. HBO2 also provides healing in patients who experience delays in therapy.
METHODS: Data included identity, demographic, social history, current disease history, disease progression and therapies used. Data were displayed in the form of tables and graphs.
RESULTS: Twenty-five GBS patients underwent HBO2 from 2016 to 2019. The majority of patients were males aged 20-30 years, triggered by preceding diarrhea. After approximately three to ten days following HBO2, they felt their first positive changes. They walked with assistance after two to three weeks receiving HBO2 and without assistance after four to 12 weeks receiving HBO2.
CONCLUSION: HBO2 administration show clinical improvement in GBS patients. HBO2 is expected to become an adjuctive therapy for GBS patients in Indonesia.

Abstract
Objectives To review the clinical outcome and electrophysiologic characteristics of children with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) from Eastern India. Methods The hospital records of the children aged less than 12 years with a final diagnosis of GBS at our hospital from November, 2015 to December, 2018 were reviewed. Disabilities were assessed at 8-weeks and 6-month follow-up using Hughes scale (0–6). Results Demyelinating variety in 57 patients (52.8%) was more common than the axonal variety (33.3%). 71.1% (32/45) of GBS patients had recovered (scale 0,1) during the follow up period of 6 months. These included 67.7% (21/31) of the axonal variety and 78.6% (11/14) of the demyelinating variety. Conclusion Irrespective of the severity, disability is less with the demyelinating variety as compared with the axonal subtype.

Abstract
AbstractGuillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common and most severe acute demyelinating polyneuropathy with ∼0.8 to 1.1/100,000 incidence in pediatric population. Unlike adult patients, incidence of facial nerve involvement in children with GBS has not yet been determined possibly because of rare use of magnetic resonance imaging in childhood-onset GBS. In the present study, we describe a girl with GBS who presented unilateral peripheral facial palsy, confirmed by neuroimaging and electrophysiological evaluation. We suggest that both neuroimaging and detailed electrophysiological evaluation should be integrated into the work-up of such patients. We also wish to highlight the importance of evaluating cranial nerve involvement as a potential indicator of severity of disease.
