Abstract
INTRODUCTION Autistic symptoms in schizophrenia are reportedly associated with cognitive and social functions. However, few studies have investigated the association between autistic symptoms and clinical features in individuals with a clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and first-episode psychosis (FEP). We aimed to determine the association between autistic symptoms and clinical features in a cohort of individuals with CHR-P or FEP. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 111 participants (CHR-P: 61, FEP: 50). Autistic symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia Autism Severity Scale. We assessed the association between autistic symptoms and global and social functioning, and cognitive function in individuals with CHR-P or EFP. Multiple regression analysis was also performed using age and sex as covariates to determine the association between autistic symptoms and global functioning. RESULTS The participants with FEP had more severe autistic symptoms than those with CHR-P. The results of bivariate correlation analysis showed a significantly negative association of autistic symptoms with global and cognitive functions in both participants with CHR-P and those with FEP. Multiple regression analysis showed that sex, autistic symptoms, and positive symptoms were significant predictors of overall functioning in those participants. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that autistic symptoms are associated with lower global functioning with both individuals at CHR-P and those with FEP. Further longitudinal analysis is needed to characterize the association between autistic symptoms and global functioning in CHR-P and FEP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health-related stigma remains a complex and pervasive issue globally. It not only inhibits individuals from seeking help but also influences the quality of healthcare they receive. Despite extensive research on mental health-related stigma, there is still limited understanding of factors influencing mental health-related stigma among nursing students. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the level of mental health-related stigma among Chinese nursing students and investigate possible associated factors. METHODS Data were collected from the 2023 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) survey. A total of 967 nursing students were included in the study. Multivariate stepwise linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the influencing factors of mental health stigma. RESULTS The mean mental health-related stigma score among nursing students was 15.31 ± 5.23 (range = 0-27). Perceived stress (β = 0.14, P = 0.001), self-efficacy (β = 0.22, P < 0.001), academic stage (β = 0.17, P < 0.001), depression (β = 0.15, P < 0.001), and adverse life events (β = 0.06, P = 0.044) were significantly associated with mental health-related stigma among nursing students (R2 = 0.147, adjusted R2 = 0.143, F = 33.214, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Nursing students in China exhibit a moderate level of mental health-related stigma, suggesting room for improvement. Perceived stress, self-efficacy, academic stage, depression, and adverse life events emerged as significant influencing factors for mental health-related stigma. These findings provide valuable insights for developing interventions to reduce mental health-related stigma among nursing students, ultimately enhancing their well-being and preparing them for becoming competent healthcare professionals in the future.

Abstract
Introduction Polydipsia, prevalent in 6%-20% of patients with schizophrenia, results in seclusion and prolonged hospitalization. It is also observed in autistic individuals, with previous studies reporting that autism accounted for 20% of all hospitalized patients with polydipsia. The current study investigated the association between polydipsia and autistic traits in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) based on the hypothesis that higher autistic traits would be observed in schizophrenic patients with polydipsia. Methods In the first study (study A), the autism-spectrum quotient [(AQ); Japanese version] scores of long-stay inpatients with and without polydipsia were compared. Furthermore, the association between polydipsia and autistic traits was also examined in short-stay inpatients and outpatients with SSDs (study B). Results Study A showed that patients with polydipsia scored significantly higher on the three AQ subscales (attention switching; communication; and imagination) compared to those without. Study B also showed that patients with polydipsia had significantly higher AQ scores overall and for several subscales compared to those without polydipsia. Binary logistic regression analysis of the combined sample showed that male gender and higher autistic traits were significant predictors of polydipsia. Discussion The study highlights the importance of focusing on such traits to understand the pathogenesis of polydipsia in SSD patients.

Abstract
In schizophrenia, it is currently thought that stigma experience is increased by psychotic and depressive symptomatology, exposure to stigma at the workplace, and that self-stigma levels vary across countries without knowing the factors explaining these variations. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to synthetize the data of observational studies comprehensively exploring multiple self-stigma dimensions and associated factors. A systematic literature search without language or time restrictions was conducted in Medline, Google Scholar, and Web of Science for studies, last 09/2021. Eligible studies that included ≥80% of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and used a validated scale measuring self-stigma dimensions were meta-analysed using random-effects models, followed by subgroup and meta-regression analyses. Study registration: PROSPERO CRD42020185030. Overall, 37 studies (n = 7717) from 25 countries (5 continents) published between 2007 and 2020 were included, with 20 studies conducted in high-income countries. These studies used two scales with total scores ranging 1-4. The mean estimate of perceived stigma was 2.76 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.60-2.94], experienced stigma 2.29 [95% CI = 2.18, 2.41], alienation 2.40 [95% CI = 2.29, 2.52], stereotype endorsement 2.14 [95% CI = 2.03, 2.27], social withdrawal 2.28 [95% CI = 2.17, 2.39] and stigma resistance 2.53 [95% CI = 2.43, 2.63]). Self-stigma levels did not reduce over time. Living outside urban areas, low-income, singleness, unemployment, high antipsychotic dose and low functioning were associated with different stigma dimensions. Some stigma dimensions were lower in studies carried out in Europe compared to other regions. Most studies published since 2007 report that self-stigma is a particular concern for a specific subgroup of patients. This subgroup is characterized by unemployment, high antipsychotic dose and low functioning. We identified important other missing factors that should be explored to improve the effectiveness of public policies and personalized interventions to reduce self-stigma. Importantly, classical illness severity indices (psychotic severity, age at illness onset, illness duration) and sociodemographic variables (age, sex and education) were not associated with self-stigma, moderating previous findings.

The clinical and psychosocial correlates of self-stigma among people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders across cultures: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Schizophr Res 2022; 248:64-78. Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are at heightened risk of experiencing self-stigma, and some cultures are more stigmatizing towards SSD than others. The first purpose of this review is to provide an estimate of the relationship between self-stigma and clinical and psychosocial outcomes. The second purpose is to examine how these relationships vary across cultures. METHOD Studies reporting correlations between self-stigma and outcome variable(s) were identified through electronic database searches from June 1, 2021, to January 2, 2022. Mean effect sizes were calculated using Fisher's r-to-Z-transformation. RESULTS Sixty-three articles (N = 8925, 22 countries) were included in the systematic review and fifty-three articles (N = 7756) were included in the meta-analysis. For the most studied clinical correlates, self-stigma had a moderate, positive correlation with depressive symptoms (r = 0.49, p < .001), a moderate, negative correlation with functioning (r = -0.39, p < .001), and a positive, small correlation with severity of psychotic symptoms (r = 0.29, p < .001), negative symptoms (r = 0.18, p < .001) and positive symptoms (r = 0.13, p = .01). For the most studied psychosocial correlates, self-stigma had a strong, negative correlation with quality of life (r = -0.52, p < .001) and self-esteem (r = -0.55, p < .001). The correlates of self-stigma were similar across cultures. DISCUSSION Self-stigma shows strong to small correlations with clinical and psychosocial variables similarly across cultures. More research is needed to examine underlying mechanisms to develop effective interventions.

Abstract
Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are considered separate entities, but the two spectra share important similarities, and the study of these areas of overlap represents a field of growing scientific interest. The PANSS Autism Score (PAUSS) was recently developed specifically to assess autistic symptoms in people living with SSD reliably and quickly. The aims of the present systematic review were to provide a comprehensive assessment of the use of the PAUSS scale in available literature and to systematically analyze cognitive, functional and neurobiological correlates of autistic symptoms measured with this instrument in SSD. The systematic literature search included three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO) as well as a manual search in Google Scholar and in reference lists of included papers. Screening and extraction were conducted by at least two independent reviewers. Out of 213 identified records, 22 articles referring to 15 original studies were included in the systematic review. Studies were conducted in several different countries by independent groups, showing consistent scientific interest in the use of the scale; most works focused on cognitive and functional correlates of ASD symptoms, but some also considered neurobiological features. Results of included studies showed that autistic symptoms in people with SSD are consistently associated with worse cognitive performance, especially in the social cognition domain, and with worse psychosocial functioning. However, the presence of autistic symptoms appears to also have a protective role, particularly on functioning, in subjects with more severe psychotic symptoms. Further exploring the impact of autistic symptoms could be of significant scientific and clinical interest, allowing the development of tailored interventions to improve treatment for people living with SSDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with schizophrenia are at high risk of suffering from stigma and internalizing it. Recently, a better understanding of the stigma process has shifted the attention from public stigma to self-stigma, which is deeply debilitating. This study aimed to assess factors associated to self-stigma by evaluating socio-demographic, clinical and treatment-related variables in a group of subjects diagnosed with schizophrenia and to identify predictors of high internalized stigma. METHODS Ninety-four inpatients accessing rehabilitative centers with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were included in this cross-sectional study. Measures included both patient-rated scales, assessing internalized stigma, attitude toward medications, side effects experience and subjective well-being, and clinician-rated scales, assessing schizophrenia symptoms and global clinical severity and antipsychotic-related side effects. RESULTS Twenty-one patients (22.3%) showed high internalized stigma while 73 (77.7%) did not. Patients experiencing more medication adverse effects and worse subjective well-being were more likely to suffer from internalized stigma according to a logistic regression analysis. Extrapyramidal, psychic and some autonomic reactions also emerged as individual predictors of self-stigma in a separate regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS Self-stigma and subjective medication side effects perception represent a relevant issue in patients' life and should be carefully taken into account in clinical practice.

Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) symptoms and internalized stigma (or self-stigma) can have a negative impact on cognitive and functional outcomes in people living with schizophrenia. Aim of the present study were to assess and compare internalized stigma, subjective well-being and other socio-demographic, clinical and functional characteristics in people diagnosed with schizophrenia with and without prominent autistic features. Ninety-four inpatients were assessed with measures of internalized stigma, subjective well-being, global clinical severity, schizophrenia symptoms severity, real-world functioning, medication side effects and attitude toward prescribed medications. Subjects with high levels of ASD symptoms were identified with the PANSS Autism Severity Score and compared to other participants. Predictors of prominent ASD features were also assessed. Thirteen patients showed prominent ASD symptoms. They were characterized by fewer years of education, worse real-world functioning and greater symptoms severity. No between-group differences were observed regarding subjective well-being and global internalized stigma severity; however, participants in the "autistic schizophrenia" group showed better stigma resistance. A worse clinical condition and fewer years of education emerged as predictors of autistic schizophrenia. Despite showing a more severe clinical presentation of the disorder and worse functional impairment, participants with prominent ASD symptoms do not present worse subjective well-being or more severe internalized stigma; on the contrary, they show better stigma resistance. ASD symptoms could therefore play a protective role in the internalization of stigma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) symptoms are frequent in people living with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and have a relevant impact on their daily life. However, current literature is mostly focused on investigating correlates of high levels of ASD symptoms, leaving largely unexplored the clinical, neurocognitive, socio-cognitive and functional characterization of individuals with minimal or absent ASD symptoms, which may represent a peculiar sub-population. METHODS A total of 361 patients (mean age 41.7 years; 117 females) included in the SCOPE study were assessed with clinical, neurocognitive, socio-cognitive, functional capacity, social skills and real-world functioning measures. The severity of ASD symptoms was assessed with the PANSS Autism Severity Scale (PAUSS): individuals with a PAUSS score < 10 were considered without significant ASD symptoms. RESULTS Seventy-two (19.95%) participants had no significant ASD symptoms and presented a less severe clinical status, as well as a better cognitive and socio-cognitive performance and functional profile. Lower non-autistic SSD symptoms severity and better social skills, functional capacity, global cognitive and Theory of Mind/Mental State Attribution (as measured by the Hinting task) performance and real-world social relationships emerged as predictors of non-ASD symptoms status in the logistic regression analyses. CONCLUSION Individuals without ASD symptoms represent a minority of people diagnosed with SSD that appears to be characterized by specific correlates, resulting in a less severe situation and more positive outcomes. As these factors could have a relevant impact on treatment response, assessing the severity of ASD symptoms could be an important step required to define a personalized treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have indicated that self-stigma is associated with depressive symptoms and could be a barrier to recovery in patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. More recently, an association between autistic symptoms and self-stigma was found in schizophrenia-spectrum patients. This study aimed to investigate the association between self-stigma, autistic and depressive symptoms, and recovery in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS In total, 105 participants were evaluated using the Autism Spectrum Quotient, the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale, the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology, and the Recovery Assessment Scale to investigate autistic symptoms, self-stigma, depressive symptoms, and recovery, respectively. The relationship between self-stigma, autistic symptoms, depressive symptoms, and recovery was assessed using structural equation modeling analysis. RESULTS Impaired attention switching, one symptom of autism, was found to positively affect stereotype endorsement, which negatively influenced recovery through depressive symptoms. Moreover, problems with communication skills negatively affected recovery through depressive symptoms. Concerning self-stigma, stereotype endorsement and perceived discrimination had a negative effect on recovery through depressive symptoms, whereas stigma resistance had a direct negative effect on recovery. CONCLUSIONS This study may provide meaningful insight into the psychological structure of recovery and could inform effective interventions for patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. This was a cross-sectionally designed study; therefore, further longitudinal studies are needed to identify the causal relationships between self-stigma, autistic and depressive symptoms, and recovery.
