Mental health of Automobile Transportation Troop personnel stationed in the Western Sichuan Plateau of China

This study investigated the mental health of military transport personnel in the Western Sichuan Plateau of China, and factors that correlate with their mental health.The Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) was used to investigate the mental health status of the subjects. Their scores were compared with the national and military norm in China. Demographic factors were analyzed for associations with SCL-90 scores.Psychological problems were detected in 28.90% of total 1076 male officers and soldiers surveyed. The SCL-90 scale somatization score of these servicemen was higher than the national and military norms in China, while other scores were comparable. The reported physical health symptoms and being an only child were strongly associated with the SCL-90 scores.The mental health of military transport personnel in the China Western Sichuan Plateau should receive more attention.

The Association Between Quality of Sleep and Health-related Quality of Life in Military and Non-military Women in Tehran, Iran

OBJECTIVES

Quality of sleep (QoS) in individuals is affected by their occupation and is one of the factors affecting the quality of life (QoL). Few studies have evaluated the relationship between QoS and QoL in military women personnel. The aim of this study was to assess QoL and QoS, and compare their relationship among military and non-military women in Tehran.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was carried out on 90 women working in Tehran during 2014, 30 were military forces, 30 were military staff, and 30 were civilian organizations staff. The female subjects were selected from Amin Police University and Tehran Health Insurance Organization using simple random sampling. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to measure QoL and QoS, respectively. The relationship between QoL and QoS was assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficient.

RESULTS

The mean scores of QoL in the military forces, military staff, and civilian organizations staff were 58.94±17.71, 67.18±13.52, and 69.10±12.51, respectively. Among the study participants, 62.9% of military forces, 20.0% of military staff, and 17.1% of the civilian organizations staff had poor QoS. Mental health as one of the dimensions of QoL was significantly different between military forces and civilian organizations staff. The association between QoL and QoS was statistically significant in military forces and military staff women.

CONCLUSIONS

Low QoS and QoL in the army necessitates that the authorities offer programs and appropriate strategies to improve mental health of QoL and promotion of QoS.

A review of the physiological and psychological health and wellbeing of naval service personnel and the modalities used for monitoring

Naval cohorts rely heavily on personnel to ensure the efficient running of naval organisations. As such, the wellbeing of personnel is essential. In an occupational setting, naval service personnel experience a variety of physiological and psychological stressors. Most naval services arrange annual physical fitness and body composition tests to ensure the physical readiness of personnel. However, these tests only evaluate a small amount of physiological capabilities. Components such as aerobic and strength capabilities are assessed, however, other components of physical fitness such as speed, agility, anaerobic capacity and flexibility are not. In addition to the physical capabilities, personnel are impacted by fatigue, nutrition and psychological stressors such as copping in stressful situations or dealing with time away from family and friends. This review will discuss the physiological and psychological factors that affect personnel's wellbeing. In addition to this, it will also evaluate the methods that are used to assess both physiological and psychological wellbeing.
