Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults living in elderly caring social organizations (SOs) are prone to suffer from depression. Many studies have found correlations between environmental and quality-of-life factors and depression; however, evidence from elderly caring SOs is rare, particularly in China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among service recipients in elderly caring SOs in Anhui and Chongqing, China. Data on demographic and health-related characteristics, living environment factors, and service quality satisfaction factors in 2171 older adults were used for analysis. The binary logistic regression model was conducted to estimate the association between living environment and service quality satisfaction factors and depression. RESULTS Our results indicated that living environment factors in terms of exposure to suitable temperature and humidity (OR = 0.655; 95 % CI: 0.446, 0.963), green coverage >30 % (OR = 0.432; 95 % CI: 0.337, 0.553) were associated with lower odds of developing depression. Also, an opposite relationship was found in the noise factor (OR = 1.985; 95 % CI: 1.395, 2.823). Higher satisfaction with admission and discharge services, dietary services, entertainment services, and psychological support services were also found to be associated with a lower risk of depression. LIMITATIONS A cross-sectional design precluded determining whether living environment, service quality satisfaction, and depression are causally related. Measurement of living environment factors and service quality satisfaction factors needs to be further clarified comprehensively. CONCLUSIONS Enhancing the living environment and the quality of the services provided to seniors in the elderly caring SOs is conducive to the reduction of the likelihood of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with both depression and activities of daily living (ADL and IADL). However, the role of ADL as a biological mechanism in the relationship between SES and late-life depression, examined through longitudinal data, remains understudied. This study explored the longitudinal mediation effects of basic ADL or IADL on the SES-depression link in older adults. METHODS Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (N = 4104) were utilized. Mediation analysis was performed using parallel process latent growth curve modeling. RESULTS The average age of participants was 57.76 years, and 55.7% being females. Significant linear growth over time was observed in ADL, IADL, and depression. Adjusting for covariates, SES was positively linked to the initial levels (intercepts) of ADL (βiADL=-0.100[-0.143, -0.057]), IADL (βiIADL=-0.140[-0.185, -0.095]), and depression (βiDEP=-0.103[-0.158, -0.048]). However, SES showed no significant correlation with the rate of change (slopes) in ADL, IADL, or depression (P > 0.05). The intercepts of ADL (βiDEP = 0.566[0.503, 0.629]) and IADL (βiDEP = 0.607[0.544, 0.670]) were positively correlated with the depression intercept but negatively with the depression slope. Conversely, the slopes of ADL and IADL were positively associated with the depression slope. These results suggest a negative indirect relationship between SES and the initial level of depression, but a positive indirect relationship with the rate of increase in depression through ADL (or IADL) intercept. CONCLUSIONS Higher SES is associated with a lower initial risk of depression and ADL difficulties. However, this same higher SES may relate to a faster increase in ADL difficulties and depression among middle-aged and older adults. The findings underscore the need for increased governmental healthcare funding and improved healthcare accessibility. Additionally, maintaining adequate sleep and physical activity can help prevent disability and reduce depression risk later in life, particularly among older adults with lower SES.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between nighttime sleep duration and sleep quality with the risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association among middle-aged and older adults in China. METHODS The data used in this study were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) surveys conducted in 2011 and 2015. Nighttime sleep duration was categorized into five groups: <6 h, 6 to <7 h, 7 to <8 h, 8 to <9 h, and ≥9 h/night. Sleep quality was assessed by restless days in the past week (<1, 1-2, 3-4, and 5-7 days/week). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between sleep duration and quality with incident knee OA. RESULTS A total of 11,114 participants who did not have knee OA at baseline were enrolled in this study. After 4 years of follow-up, the overall incidence of knee OA was 8.07 %. Compared to 7 to <8 h of sleep duration, short sleep duration (<6 h/night) was associated with a significantly increased risk of incident knee OA in the fully adjusted model [odds ratio (OR) =1.73, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.33-2.25]. Additionally, participants with 5-7 sleep restless days/week were associated with significantly increased risk of incident knee OA (OR = 1.88, 95 % CI: 1.48-2.38). CONCLUSIONS Short nighttime sleep duration and poor sleep quality are associated with increased risk of incident knee OA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of sleep duration on the development of mental illness remain controversial. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the effects of long or short sleep duration on psychological disorders, which could reveal new ways for preventing and treating mental health conditions cheaply. METHODS Identifying published papers was accomplished by using the following five English databases on March 16, 2022: PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science databases, and Scopus. Cross-sectional and cohort studies were considered if they evaluated the association of sleep duration with all kinds of mental illness in adults. We excluded case reports, editorials, narrative reviews, and studies without detailed information on sleep duration. Summary effect-size estimates were expressed as risk ratios (RRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals and were evaluated using random-effect models. Mantel-Haenszel's random-effects model was used to estimate the inconsistency index (I2) and Tau2 index (measurement of heterogeneity). RESULTS A total of 52 studies were included in this analysis, consisting of 14 cohort studies and 38 cross-sectional studies. These studies involved a combined sample size of 1,407,891 participants who met the inclusion criteria. Cohort (adjusted RR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.26-1.60, P < .001, I2 = 37.6%, Tau2 = 0.014) and cross-sectional studies (adjusted OR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.57-1.77, P < .001, I2 = 79.7%, Tau2 = 0.060) concluded that short sleep duration increased mental disorder risks. The same conclusions were acquired in the subgroup analysis, especially for depression (adjusted RR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.24-1.65, P < .001, I2 = 80.4%, Tau2 = 0.082), anxiety (adjusted RR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.04-1.63, P = .002, I2 = 0.0%, Tau2 = 0.000), and PTSD (adjusted RR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.04-1.76, P = .022, I2 = 24.1%, Tau2 = 0.013) in cohort studies. The results of subgroup analysis indicated that long sleep duration was not a risk factor for depression (adjusted RR = 1.15, 95% CI: 0.98-1.34, P = .088, I2 = 63.4%, Tau2 = 0.045) and anxiety (adjusted RR = 1.37, 95% CI: 0.93-2.03, P = .114, I2 = 0.0%, Tau2 = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS Short sleep duration, not long sleep duration, is an independent predictor of developing mental disorders, particularly anxiety and depression.

Abstract
We aimed to synthesise information related to the incidence of depression and depressive symptoms (DDS) in a community-dwelling older adult population at a global level. In this systematic review, we included articles with a cohort study design that evaluated the incidence of depression or depressive symptoms in older adults aged 60 years or more in a community-dwelling environment. Six databases were used: Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, SciELO, and Cochrane, and the entire selection process was independently performed by peers. We divided the included articles into subgroups according to the DDS assessment instrument: (i) Geriatric Depression Scale; (ii) Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale; (iii) miscellaneous scales; and (iv) diagnostic interviews. Each cumulative incidence value obtained per item was adjusted for a 1-year follow-up period, which generated an annual cumulative incidence (AcI). From 46 articles, 42 used scales to evaluate the depressive variable, with an AcI estimate of around 4.5%. The articles that assessed depression categorically observed a variation in AcI between 0.2% and 7.0%. Among all the materials included, the group that used the Geriatric Depression Scale observed the lowest and the highest AcI, 1.3% and 26.6% respectively. Most of the productions were from countries in the Asian continent (52.2%), followed by Europe (30.4%), the Americas (13%), and Oceania (4.4%). Despite the variation of AcI, we found a frequent occurrence of DDS in older adults in the community-dwelling environment, which highlights the need for preventive actions and better-targeted early care, especially in terms of primary health care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep duration has been associated with depression. However, mean regression, such as linear regression or logistic regression, may not capture relationships that occur mainly in the tails of outcome distribution. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between sleep duration and depression along the entire distribution of depression using quantile regression approach. METHODS This study included 55,954 adults aged 18 to 80 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 34,156) and the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 21,798). The coefficients corresponding to cross-group differences in PHQ-9 scores were estimated when comparing short or long sleep duration with normal sleep duration on deciles of PHQ-9 score distribution. RESULTS At lower quantiles, either short or long sleep duration was not associated with depression. At higher quantiles, the association of both short and long sleep duration with depression became much more pronounced. Compared with normal sleep duration, short and long sleep duration were associated with increases of 1.34 (95 % CI: 1.16, 1.51) and 0.28 (95 % CI: 0.04, 0.52) in PHQ-9 scores at the 50th quantile, while the corresponding increases were 3.27 (95 % CI: 2.83, 3.72) and 1.65 (95 % CI: 0.86, 2.45) at the 90th quantile, respectively. We also found that the magnitude of association between short sleep duration and depression was stronger among females and individuals with chronic diseases. CONCLUSIONS The beneficial effect of sufficient sleep in decreasing depression severity may be more evident among individuals with severe depression. Further studies could explore whether these heterogeneous associations can be generalized to populations with different characteristics.

Abstract
Background and objective Older adults are susceptible to various disorders, including depression. Depression manifests as a disorder characterized by a persistent depressed mood, feelings of sadness and loneliness, sleep disturbances, and loss of interest lasting for two weeks or more. This condition can significantly affect the quality of life for older adults, resulting in adverse outcomes that have a negative impact on their overall well-being. In this study, our objective was to assess the prevalence of depression and identify associated risk factors among individuals aged 60 years and above who attended Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCCs) in Jizan City. Methodology We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study among older people attending PHCCs in Jizan City between May and December 2022. In this study, we interviewed 300 participants using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess depression. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) was used for data entry and analysis. We used the chi-square test and binary logistic regression model to detect the associations and predictors of depression among older adults. Results One-third of the study participants experienced depression, with 49 (16%) exhibiting mild depression, 33 (11%) reporting moderate depression, and 17 (6%) individuals indicating moderately severe depression. Depression was more common among females (158, 52.7%) than males (142, 47.3%). The predictors of depression among the study participants were the dependency to perform daily tasks and abnormal sleep duration. Conclusions Depression is a prevalent health problem among older people in Jizan City, particularly among females, those who are divorced or widowed, individuals dependent on others for daily tasks, and those with abnormal sleep duration. We conclude that we need more research on older adults to assess their mental problems and fill in the literature gap.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to establish a self-simple-to-use nomogram to predict the risk of multimorbidity among middle-aged and older adults. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS We used data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, including 7735 samples. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Samples' demographic characteristics, modifiable lifestyles and depression were collected. Cox proportional hazard models and nomogram model were used to estimate the risk factors of multimorbidity. RESULTS A total of 3576 (46.2%) participants have multimorbidity. The result showed that age, female (HR 0.80, 95% CI 0.72 to 0.89), chronic disease (HR 2.59, 95% CI 2.38 to 2.82), sleep time (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.72 to 0.85), regular physical activity (HR 0.88, 95% CI 0.81 to 0.95), drinking (HR 1.27 95% CI 1.16 to 1.39), smoking (HR 1.40, 95% CI 1.26 to 1.53), body mass index (HR 1.04, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.05) and depression (HR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.03) were associated with multimorbidity. The C-index of nomogram models for derivation and validation sets were 0.70 (95% CI 0.69 to 0.71, p=0.006) and 0.71 (95% CI 0.70 to 0.73, p=0.008), respectively. CONCLUSIONS We have crafted a user-friendly nomogram model for predicting multimorbidity risk among middle-aged and older adults. This model integrates readily available and routinely assessed risk factors, enabling the early identification of high-risk individuals and offering tailored preventive and intervention strategies.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association of estimated daytime nap duration with all-cause mortality in Chinese adults. We conceived a prospective cohort design using adult survey data of the baseline and four follow-up waves (2010-2019) from China Family Panel Studies. Cox frailty models with random intercepts for surveyed provinces were used to estimate risks of all-cause mortality associated with midday napping. Trend and subgroup analyses were also performed stratified by demographic, regional and behavioral factors. Compared with non-nappers, those who reported a long napping duration (≥60 min/day) had an increased risk of all-cause mortality, while shorter napping (<60 min) showed no association with mortality. We observed significant trends for greater risks of mortality associated with longer nap duration. Long nap-associated higher risk of all-cause mortality was seen in a group of nocturnal sleep duration ≥9 h. We identified stronger associations of long nap with mortality among adults aged over 50 years, those with lower BMI (<24 kg/m2), residents in rural regions and unregular exercisers. Long midday napping is independently associated with higher risks of all-cause mortality in Chinese adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies reported that depression was associated with a high risk of arthritis. However, the effect of different long-term depressive symptom trajectory patterns on the risk of arthritis has not been evaluated. Our study aimed to explore the association between depressive symptom trajectories and the risk of arthritis. METHODS A total of 5583 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2018 were included in this analysis. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify depressive symptom trajectories, and a multivariable competitive Cox regression model was used to examine the association of depressive symptom trajectories with arthritis during follow-up. RESULTS Five depressive symptom trajectories were identified in our research: stable-high, decreasing, increasing, stable-moderate and stable-low. Compared with participants in the stable-low trajectory group, those in the stable-moderate, increasing, decreasing and stable-high trajectory groups had a higher cumulative risk of arthritis, with HRs (95% CIs) for arthritis of 1.64 (1.30, 2.07), 1.86 (1.30, 2.66), 1.99 (1.41, 2.80) and 2.19 (1.38, 3.48), respectively. Participants with the stable-high symptoms trajectory had the highest cumulative risk of arthritis. There was still a high risk of arthritis, although the depression state was reduced and remained at a level that is generally considered reasonable. CONCLUSIONS The higher depressive symptoms trajectories were significantly associated with the increased risk of arthritis, and the long-term depressive symptoms trajectories may be a strong predictor of having arthritis.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration, sleep problems, and depression in Northwest China. Method Depression was diagnosed at the hospital and self-reported by the participants in the baseline survey. Sleep duration and problems, including difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep, early morning awakening, daytime dysfunction, use of sleeping pills or drugs, and any sleep problems, were obtained by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for exploring the association between sleep duration, sleep problems, and depression, adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and health behaviors. The association between depression and sleep duration was also evaluated continuously with restricted cubic spline curves based on logistic models. Results 36,515 adults from Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in Northwest China were included. About 24.04% of participants reported short sleep duration (<7 h), and 15.64% reported long sleep duration (≥9 h). Compared with standard sleep duration (7-9 h), short sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of depression (OR: 1.69, 95%CI: 1.26-2.27, p = 0.001). Self-reported sleep problems were also related to four times depression risk increased (OR: 4.02, 95%CI: 3.03-5.35, p < 0.001) compared with no sleep problems. In addition, a nonlinear relationship was found between sleep duration and depression after adjusting covariates (p = 0.043). Conclusion Sleep duration and sleep problems are associated with depression. Enough sleep time and healthy sleep habits in life course might be a practical health promotion approach to reduce depression risk in Northwest Chinese adults. A further study from cohort study is needed to verify the temporal association.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to investigate the mediating role of depression and the moderating effect of gender in the relationship between total sleep time (TST) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in middle-aged and elderly people (aged 45 or above). Methods: The data used in this study is from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including a total of 10,460 respondents. Associations between TST, IADL, depression, and gender were analyzed using logistic regression and Karlson, Holm, and Breen (KHB) methods. Results: Short (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.28-1.58 of ≤6 h) and long TST (OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.02-1.32 of 8-9 h; OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.19-1.54 of >9 h) were both associated with IADL. The mediation effect analyses observed that depression explained 64.80% of the total effect of short TST (≤6 h) and IADL, but was insignificant in long TST (8-9 h and >9 h). Meanwhile, gender has moderating effects on the mediation effect model. Conclusion: The study suggests that health interventions that focused on the dimensions of TST and depression are crucial for preventing functional disability while accounting for gender differences.

Abstract
BackgroundEngaging in social activities can help older persons with their depressed symptoms. Few studies, however, have looked into the connection between social interactions and depressed symptoms in Chinese older persons. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in older Chinese individuals' social activity involvement and depressive symptoms across urban and rural settings.MethodsA cross-sectional investigation using information from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which was limited to older individuals aged 60 and over. Generalized linear models were constructed to assess the effects of participants' characteristics and specific social activities on CES-D scores. The association between specific social activities and depressed symptoms was investigated using multivariate logistic regression analysis.ResultsIn this study, it was discovered that older individuals had a prevalence of depressed symptoms of 36.2%, with rural older adults having a greater prevalence of depressive symptoms (39.7%) than urban older adults (30.9%). Our results showed that for urban respondents, providing help to others (not regularly. OR = 0.753, 95% CI: 0.579–0.980, P = 0.035), going to a sport (not regularly. OR = 0.685, 95% CI: 0.508–0.924, P = 0.013), and using the Internet (not regular. OR = 0.613, 95% CI: 0.477–0.789, P < 0.001; almost weekly. OR = 0.196, 95% CI: 0.060–0.645, P = 0.007) were all significantly and negatively associated with depressive symptoms, while for rural respondents, interacting with friends (not regularly. OR = 1.205, 95% CI: 1.028–01.412, P = 0.021) and using the Internet (not regularly. OR = 0.441, 95% CI: 0.278–0.698, P < 0.001) were significantly and negatively associated with depressive symptoms.ConclusionsAccording to our research, there is a cross-sectional relationship between participating in a specific social activity and depressed symptoms in Chinese older adults, and this relationship varies across urban and rural older adults. This suggests that taking part in specific social activities may be crucial for reducing depression symptoms in older persons, developing more focused interventions that might support healthy aging, and offering a guide for policymakers and activists working to improve the mental health of seniors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Quality of life may be influenced by the presence of eating disorders. This study investigated the association between night eating syndrome (NES) and health-related quality of life in the general population. METHODS Data were from the 2019 Korea Community Health Survey. The presence of NES was determined using the Night Eating Questionnaire. Health-related quality of life was measured using the 3-level EuroQoL-5 Dimension Index. Multivariable linear regression analyses assessed the association between NES and health-related quality of life. Subgroup analyses were performed based on daily sleep duration. RESULTS A total of 34,434 individuals aged 19 years or older were included in the study population. Participants with NES (β = - 4.85, p < 0.001) reported poorer health-related quality of life scores than those without NES. Decreases in health-related quality of life scores among those with NES were greatest in those who slept over 8 h daily (β = - 12.03, p = 0.004), followed by those who slept less than 6 h (β = - 5.90, p = 0.006) and participants who slept between 6 and 8 h (β = - 3.40, p = 0.026) daily. CONCLUSION Individuals with NES were more likely to have a lower health-related quality of life than those without NES. These findings highlight the potential importance of considering NES in investigating the health-related quality of life. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, well-designed case-control analytic studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few longitude cohort studies investigated the risk of the duration of nighttime sleep and naps to the new-onset common chronic disease conditions (CDCs) in middle-aged (45-60) and the elderly (age ≥ 60) populations using an age-stratified strategy. METHODS The 7025 participants from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were screened as eligible subjects. Established 13 cohorts with CDCs, acquired their' sleep records in 2011, and obtained new-onset incidents of CDCs during follow-up in 2011-2018. Performed risk association analyses between sleep duration and 13 new-onset CDCs respectively. RESULTS New-onset risk of four CDCs decreased with increasing nighttime sleep (p-nonlinear>0.05). The risk threshold was approximately 7 hours in middle-aged people and 6 hours in the elderly. For the middle-aged population, compared with 7-9hours sleep, <5hour and 5-7hours nighttime sleep were associated with 1.312∼1.675 times more risk of hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes or high blood sugar status, and multimorbidity; Compared with no nap, a 0-30 min nap was associated with 1.413(1.087∼1.837) times the heart disease risk. In the elderly, < 5 hours of night sleep was a significant risk factor for four CDCs including kidney disease and multimorbidity, etc. A long night's sleep (>9 hours) was connected with 61.2% reduction in risk of memory disease, a >90 min nap increased 62% risk of memory disease, and a 0-30 min nap was associated with higher risks of heart disease, hypertension, and a lower kidney disease risk. CONCLUSIONS Nighttime sleep and daytime naps may have their own implications for the new-onset CDCs' risk in the aging process.

Abstract
Background Although a significant amount of literature has examined the association between childhood adversity and adverse health outcomes, which may be affected by sleep duration and life satisfaction. However, this relationship has not been researched in the Chinese population. This study aimed to assess the association between childhood adversity and health outcomes, with sleep duration and life satisfaction as mediators. Methods A total of 14,693 subjects aged 45 and over from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included. Taking childhood adversity as the independent variable, the health level of middle-aged and older individuals as the dependent variable, and sleep time and satisfaction as the mediating factors, Mplus 8.0 software was used to establish a structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the link between childhood adversity and health level and to explore the mediating effect of target mediators between childhood adversity and health level. Results In this study, childhood adversity was positively associated with depression symptoms, activities of daily living (ADL), and the number of chronic diseases (r = 0.116, 0.026 and 0.050, respectively, P < 0.001). Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and depressive symptoms, ADL, and number of chronic diseases were mediated by sleep duration and life satisfaction, respectively. Conclusion Adversity experienced in childhood can affect the health status of middle-aged and older people. By ensuring adequate sleep and improving life satisfaction, health outcomes can be improved, and the negative effects of childhood adversity can be reduced.

Abstract
Background The relationship between daytime napping and depression remains debatable. Thus, a meta-analysis in this study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between daytime napping and depression. Methods The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched up to February 2022, and the reference lists of the included studies were also retrieved. A random-effects model was used to estimate the combined effect size. Results Nine studies with 649,111 participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) was 1.15 (95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.31) with a significant heterogeneity (I 2 = 91.3%, P for heterogeneity <0.001), and the results demonstrated an increased risk of depressive symptoms among daytime nappers. Visual inspection of the funnel plot and Egger's and Begg's tests identified no obvious evidence of publication bias. Conclusion This meta-analysis indicates that daytime naps are a predictor of depression. The effects of daytime napping on depression may vary depending on the characteristics of people, the pattern of naps, and the individual's sleep experience. The findings may have significant implications for future research on depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to examine the bidirectional associations between daytime napping duration and metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2015, modified Poisson regression models were performed to explore the longitudinal associations of baseline napping duration with the occurrence and remission of MetS. Generalized estimating equation was conducted to explore the association between baseline MetS status with subsequent changes in daytime napping duration. Cross-lagged panel analysis was performed to further verify their bidirectional relationships. RESULTS During the four-year follow-up, among 5041 participants without MetS at baseline, extended naps were significantly associated with MetS occurrence, compared with non-napping. This association was only significant in individuals with adequate night-time sleep duration or good sleep quality of the 2898 participants with MetS at baseline. Excessive napping duration may be not favorable for MetS remission especially for adequate night-time sleepers. With respect to reverse associations, baseline MetS status significantly increased the napping duration during the subsequent follow-up period. Finally, there were significant bidirectional cross-lagged associations between napping duration and MetS severity score after adjusting for all covariates. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates bidirectional relationships exist between daytime napping duration and MetS. Interestingly, longer napping duration was detrimental to cardiometabolic health only in those with sufficient night-time sleep duration or good sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quantifying the effect of depression on sleep duration is of great importance to the diagnosis, control, prevention of sleep-related diseases and understanding related biological mechanisms. However, existing studies explored the effect without considering depressive duration, which may cause inaccurate results. METHODS Accessing the data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2018, we used the interval between two interviews with persistent depression status to approximate depressive duration. Five analysis subsamples with different depressive durations, i.e., 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 years, were obtained. The change amount of sleep duration between two interviews was used as the outcome variable. A multiple linear model was independently used to estimate the effect in each subsample, and meta-regression was used to test the trend. Subgroup analyses in terms of genders, ages and baseline sleep durations were performed. RESULTS On average, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7-years depressive durations significantly reduced sleep duration by 0.46, 0.57, 0.72, 0.75, 1.07 h (P < 0.001), respectively. Especially for the elderly, female, and participants with normal baseline sleep duration, the reduction was larger. Trend test showed that the variation trend was significant (P < 0.001). Similar results were found in the subgroup analyses. LIMITATIONS Sleep duration and depression are not measured by gold-standard methods. CONCLUSIONS Depression significantly reduces sleep duration, especially for the elderly, female, and people with normal baseline sleep duration. Longer depressive duration reduces sleep duration more. Such finding provides more detailed epidemiological evidence for depression-sleep relationship.

Abstract
Background Sleep status, including sleep quality and nap duration, may be associated with frailty and cognitive impairment in older adults. Older adults living in nursing homes may be more prone to physical and cognitive frailties. This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep quality and nap duration, and cognitive frailty among older adults living in nursing homes. Methods This study included 1,206 older adults aged ≥ 60 years from nursing homes in Hunan province, China. A simple frailty questionnaire (FRAIL scale) was used and Mini-Mental State Examination was conducted to assess physical frailty and cognitive impairment, respectively, to confirm cognitive frailty. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess the sleep quality. Nap duration was classified as follows: no, short (≤30 min), and long (>30 min) napping. Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results The prevalence of cognitive frailty among the older adults in nursing homes was 17.5%. Approximately 60.9% of the older adults had a poor sleep quality. Among the 1,206 participants, 43.9% did not take naps, 29.1% had short naps, and 26.9% had long naps. After adjusting for all covariates, poor sleep quality (OR 2.53; 95% CI 1.78-3.59; P < 0.001) and long nap duration (OR 1.77; 95% CI 1.19-2.64; P = 0.003) were associated with higher odds of cognitive frailty, but short nap duration (OR 0.60; 95% CI 0.40-0.89; P = 0.012) was associated with low prevalence of cognitive frailty. Conclusion Poor sleep quality and long nap duration are significantly associated with high risk of cognitive frailty among the older adults in nursing homes. Short nap duration was associated with low prevalence of cognitive frailty. However, these associations require further validation in older adults. Clinical trial registration https://osf.io/57hv8.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Adverse childhood experiences are co-occurring factors of multimorbidity and depression in mid-late life, but the combined effect of ACEs and multimorbidity on depression over life has not been fully studied. METHODS We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study which includes 4,440 middle-aged and older adults. Different types of ACEs experienced up to the age of 17 were assessed based on self-reports. We used parallel process Latent Growth Curve modelling to evaluate the longitudinal mediation role of ACEs, multimorbidity and depression. RESULTS People who had more ACEs were found to have a higher level of multimorbidity (intercept: 0.057, 95% CI: 0.031 to 0.079) and depression (intercept: 0.047, 95% CI: 0.013 to 0.076) at the baseline and a faster increase in multimorbidity (slope: 0.107, 95%CI: 0.078 to 0.136) and depression (slope: 0.074, 95%CI: 0.035 to 0.153). The mediation analysis indicated that there was a positive indirect association of ACEs via the multimorbidity intercept with the intercept of depression (0.028, 95%CI: 0.012 to 0.043), and a small negative association with the slope of depression (-0.002, 95%CI: -0.003 to -0.001). We also found a positive indirect association of ACEs via the multimorbidity slope with the intercept (0.035, 95%CI: 0.021 to 0.049) and slope (0.008, 95%CI: 0.004 to 0.011) of depression. CONCLUSIONS ACEs were related to higher depression partly via elevated multimorbidity. Public health services and behavioural interventions to prevent and reduce the occurrence of ACEs might help to lower the risk of multimorbidity and depression in later life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Research has suggested that a correlation may exist between depressive mood and episodes of night eating. This study aimed to examine whether having episodes of night eating was associated with increased levels of depression. METHOD This study used data from the 2019 Korea Community Health Survey and the study population consisted of adults aged ≥19 years. Depression levels were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. We investigated the patients' general characteristics using t-tests and analysis of variance. The association between depression levels and episodes of night eating was analyzed using a multivariable linear regression analysis. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on daily sleep duration. RESULTS We analyzed 34,358 individuals and found higher average depression scores (β: 4.99, p < .001) in those with episodes of night eating than those without. Large effect sizes were found for differences in depression scores between participants with and without episodes of night eating. The magnitude of this increase was particularly pronounced in individuals who reported 9 or more hours of sleep per day. DISCUSSION An association was found between levels of depression and episodes of night eating as individuals with episodes of night eating were more likely to have higher depression scores. Our findings suggest the potential need to consider night eating when addressing the mental health of the general population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the combined association of central obesity and depressive symptoms with risk of heart disease in a national prospective cohort study of the Chinese population. METHODS Data came from 10,722 community-dwelling adults aged over 45 years, from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study during 2011-2018. Central obesity was assessed with waist circumference (WC) in physical examinations (men with a WC of ≥ 90 cm and women with a WC of ≥ 80 cm). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (score ≥ 10). Participants were assigned to four groups according to central obesity (yes/no) and depressive symptoms (yes/no). Cox proportional hazard regression was used after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS During 7 years of follow-up, we identified 1080 heart disease cases. Compared with people without central obesity and depressive symptoms, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.39 (1.18, 1.64) for those who had central obesity alone, 1.44 (1.18, 1.77) for those who had depressive symptoms alone, and 1.88 (1.55, 2.30) for those who had both central obesity and depressive symptoms. The combined association in men was more evident than that in women. CONCLUSIONS Our study provided evidence that the coexistence of central obesity and depressive symptoms were associated with a substantially increased risk of heart disease compared to those without these two conditions.
