Abstract
Aim To determine the prevalence of dry eye (DE) and some related factors in patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy (T2DN). Methods We performed a cross-sectional study on 338 people, who were divided into 2 groups: 169 T2DN patients and 169 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) without renal complications as a control group. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and test fluorescein tear-film break-up time (TBUT) were done in all 338 subjects. Patients with OSDI scores < 13 and TBUT values equal to or under 10 seconds were diagnosed with dry eye. Results The prevalence of DE in T2DN patients was significantly higher than T2DM group (55.6% versus 37.3%). The T2DN groups with dry eye had a median duration of DM, the proportion of hypertension, peripheral nerve complications, anemia, proportion of using insulin, and concentration of plasma glucose, HbA1C, urea, creatinine, CRP-hs significantly higher than those of T2DN without dry eye. Advanced age, high HbA1C level, and decreased eGFR were independent factors associated with dry eye in T2DN patients. Conclusion Dry eye was a common condition associated with advanced age, high HbA1C levels, and decreased GFR in T2DN patients.

Abstract
AIM To determine the dry eye (DE) rate and its relationship with disease stage in patients with primary hypertension. METHODS A cross-sectional study included 432 patients with primary hypertension (with an equal number of patients in each group: 144 in stage I, II, and III hypertension) and 144 healthy subjects as a control group. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Schirmer I test without anesthetics were conducted on all 576 subjects. Subjects with OSDI scores <13 and Schirmer I values equal to or under 10 mm were diagnosed with DE. RESULTS The ratio of DE in hypertension patients was higher than in the control group (41.7% versus 18.8%; P<0.001). The proportion of patients with DE increased gradually according to the hypertension stage: 27.1% in stage I, 40.3% in stage II, and 57.6% in stage III, P<0.001. Age, duration of hypertension, plasma urea, creatinine, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP-hs) levels in hypertension patients with DE were higher than those without DE, P<0.001. Advanced age, a long duration of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, elevated plasma creatinine, and CRP-hs levels were independent factors associated with DE in primary hypertension patients, P<0.001. CONCLUSION DE is a common disorder associated with advanced age, a long duration of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, elevated plasma CRP-hs, and creatinine levels in patients with primary hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to report the ocular manifestations in kidney, liver, and heart transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the medical records of kidney, liver, and heart transplant recipients who were examined at the ophthalmology clinic of a tertiary hospital between October 2021 and October 2022. We evaluated the ocular complaints of the patients, ophthalmological examination findings, the etiology of the underlying disease, comorbidities, posttransplant duration, and the medications used. Ocular pathologies were classified as corneal, conjunctival, lens, vitreoretinal, and optic disc pathologies for the analysis. RESULTS Our study included 233 patients (191 kidney, 40 liver, 2 heart transplant patients). Mean age of patients was 42.94 ± 17.45 years. Among the patient group, 80.3% had at least 1 pathological ocular finding. In subgroup analysis, 12.4% of the patients had corneal pathologies, 19.3% had conjunctival pathologies, 33.0% had lens pathologies, 33.5% had vitreoretinal pathologies, and 18.9% had optic disc-related pathologies. The most common finding was dry eye, followed by cataract and vitreoretinal pathologies. The most common vitreoretinal pathology was diabetic retinopathy, followed by hypertensive retinopathy. The ocular pathology incidence in kidney and liver transplant patients was similar (P = .05). The 2 heart transplant patients did not have any ocular pathologies except refractive errors. In addition, no significant correlation was observed between posttransplant duration and ocular pathologies (P = .28). CONCLUSIONS Ocular findings were seen in most of the kidney and liver transplant recipients. Therefore, it is required that these patients undergo routine ocular screenings in order to facilitate early diagnosis and prompt treatment when needed.

Abstract
According to the age-old adage, while eyes are often considered the gateway to the soul, they might also provide insights into a more pragmatic aspect of our health: blood sugar levels. This potential breakthrough could be realized through the development of smart contact lenses (SCLs). Although contact lenses were first developed for eyesight correction, new uses have recently become available. In the near future, it might be possible to monitor a variety of ocular and systemic disorders using contact lens sensors. Within the realm of glaucoma, SCLs present a novel prospect, offering a potentially superior avenue compared to traditional management techniques. These lenses introduce the possibility of non-invasive and continuous monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP) while also enabling the personalized administration of medication as and when needed. This convergence holds great promise for advancing glaucoma care. In this review, recent developments in SCLs, including their potential applications, such as IOP and glucose monitoring, are briefly discussed.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been found to improve low-grade systemic and tissue inflammation; however, the association between SGLT2 inhibitor use and the incidence of dry eye disease (DED) has not been explored. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between SGLT2 inhibitor use and dry eye disease in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS A retrospective cohort analysis of the largest multi-institutional electronic medical records database in Taiwan was conducted to identify patients with T2D newly receiving SGLT2 inhibitors or glucagonlike peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) from 2016 to 2018. Data analysis was performed from March 1 to May 31, 2022. Propensity scores with inverse probability of treatment weighting were generated to enable homogeneous comparisons between the 2 groups. EXPOSURES Treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors or GLP-1 RAs. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Incident dry eye disease, which was defined by clinical diagnoses, plus the related drug prescription. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios with 95% CIs for the risk of DED. RESULTS A total of 10 038 and 1077 T2D patients newly receiving SGLT2 inhibitors (mean [SD] age, 59.5 [12.1] years; 5689 [56.7%] men) or GLP-1 RAs (mean [SD] age, 58.5 [41.2] years; 587 [54.5%] men), respectively, were included in the analysis. The incidence of DED was lower in patients newly receiving SGLT2 inhibitors (9.0 events per 1000 person-years) compared with those receiving GLP-1 RAs (11.5 events per 1000 person-years), yielding a hazard ratio of 0.78 (95% CI, 0.68-0.89). Subgroup analyses indicated that the lowered DED risks associated with SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with T2D were similar across different age, sex, blood glucose level, and kidney function groups. Results from the sensitivity analyses (including the propensity score-matching approach, on-treatment analyses, and different follow-up periods of 1, 2, and 3 years) were similar to the main analyses. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The findings of this study suggest that patients with T2D newly receiving SGLT2 inhibitors may have a lower risk for DED compared with those receiving GLP-1 RAs. Prospective studies are needed to analyze these results.
