Optimization of Ciprofloxacin Adsorption on Clinoptilolite-Based Adsorbents Using Response Surface Methodology

The adsorption of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) from water solution by natural zeolite-clinoptilolite (CLI), magnetic clinoptilolite (MAG-CLI), and graphene oxide coated magnetic clinoptilolite (GO-MAG-CLI) was investigated. The novel approach of an environmentally friendly and cost-effective microwave-assisted method was applied for the magnetic composite synthesis. Detailed characterization of the prepared composites was achieved. In order to investigate the effect of the initial CIP concentration, pH, temperature, contact time, and type of adsorbent on the adsorption efficiency of CIP, and to obtain the optimal conditions for CIP removal, the response surface methodology central composite factorial design (RSM-CCF) was applied. The results obtained by the RSM-CCF showed that among the studied adsorbents, GO-MAG-CLI had the highest adsorption capacity for CIP, achieved for the initial concentration of 48.47 mg dm^-3 at a pH of 5 and 24.78 °C after 19.20 min of contact time. The adsorption kinetics studied for the initial CIP concentration range of 15-50 mg dm^-3 followed Lagergren's pseudo-second-order model, and the Langmuir isotherm was the most suitable one to describe the CIP adsorption onto GO-MAG-CLI.

Worldwide Research Analysis on Natural Zeolites as Environmental Remediation Materials

Society faces a significant problem in regards to the spread of harmful products in the environment, primarily caused by accelerated growth and resource consumption. Consequently, there is a need for materials to be processed in less harmful ways and to remedy the contaminated sources they generate. Microporous materials have been studied for a long time and are used in waste treatment alternatives. Natural zeolites, on which this study is based, are attractive to the scientific and technological communities, due to their numerous applications as decontaminants and adsorption properties. This study analyzes the intellectual structures of publications related to natural zeolites in environmental remediation, using bibliometric methods to determine their volumes and trends. The methodology comprises of an analysis based on 1582 articles, using VOSviewer software, with data from 1974 to 2020, via the Scopus database. Results reflect a notable increase in publications from the end of the 1990s; the greatest contribution in the area comes from Eurasian countries. The study considers that development in this line of research will continue to increase and serve as a great contribution to preserve the environment in coming years, with themes that focus on water treatment (e.g., drinking water, wastewater, greywater), removal of heavy metals, ammonium, ammonia, and construction.

Effects of sludge thermal-alkaline pretreatment on cationic red X-GRL adsorption onto pyrolysis biochar of sewage sludge

Thermal-alkaline pretreatment has traditionally been used to enhance anaerobic sludge digestion. In this study, after removing the supernatant, which could be used in anaerobic digestion, the Residual Solids of Thermal-Alkaline pretreated sewage Sludge (RSTAS) were used to prepare biochar via pyrolysis, which could then adsorb Cationic Red X-GRL(X-GRL). The experimental results showed that the RSTAS-biochar had a higher BET surface area and total pore volume than the biochar prepared from raw sludge (RS) (43.5% and 33.3%, respectively). The pretreatment enhanced the X-GRL adsorption capacity of the biochar by 1.5-49.2% at dosages between 12.5-100.0g/g, and the highest adsorption capacity increased from 39.1mg/g to 47.6mg/g. The biochar from RSTAS had a wider application pH range for X-GRL adsorption. The kinetics and isotherms for X-GRL adsorption onto the two biochars were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively, which suggested that thermal-alkaline pretreatment had little effect on the adsorption mechanisms of X-GRL onto biochar.

Active MgO-SiO2 hybrid material for organic dye removal: A mechanism and interaction study of the adsorption of C.I. Acid Blue 29 and C.I. Basic Blue 9

A comparative analysis was performed concerning the removal of two different organic dyes from model aqueous solution using an inorganic oxide adsorbent. The key element of the study concerns evaluation of the influence of the dyes' structure and their acid-base character on the efficiency of the adsorption process. The selection of sorbent material for this research - an MgO-SiO₂ oxide system synthesized via a modified sol-gel route - is also not without significance. The relatively high porous structure parameters of this material (A_BET = 642 m²/g, V_p = 1.11 mL and S_p = 9.8 nm) are a result of the proposed methodology for its synthesis. Both organic dyes (C.I. Acid Blue 29 and C.I. Basic Blue 9) were subjected to typical batch adsorption tests, including investigation of such process parameters as time, initial adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature. An attempt was also made to estimate the sorption capacity of the oxide material with respect to the analyzed organic dyes. To achieve the objectives of the research - determine the efficiency of adsorption - it was important to perform a thorough physicochemical analysis of the adsorbents (e.g. FTIR, elemental analysis and porous structure parameters). The results confirmed the significantly higher affinity of the basic dye to the oxide adsorbents compared with the acidic dye. The regeneration tests, which indirectly determine the nature of the adsorbent/adsorbate interactions, provide further evidence for this finding. On this basis, a probable mechanism of dyes adsorption on the MgO-SiO₂ oxide adsorbent was proposed.

Synthesis of the modified nanofiber as a nanoadsorbent and its dye removal ability from water: isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic

In this paper, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiber was prepared and modified by diethylenetriamine (DETA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA). Dye removal ability of the modified nanofiber (PVA/DETA/EDA/GA) as a nanoadsorbent from water was studied. Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the characteristics of the modified nanofiber. Direct Red 23 (DR23) and Direct Blue (DB78) were used. The effect of operational parameters such as pH, initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature and adsorbent dosage on dye removal was studied. The dye adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics were investigated. The maximum dye adsorption capacity of the modified nanofiber was 370 and 400 mg/g for DR23 and DB78, respectively. Four isotherms, the Langmuir, the Freundlich, Tempkin and a modified Langmuir-Freundlich model were used. Dye adsorption on the modified nanofiber followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second kinetic order. Thermodynamic data showed that dye removal was a spontaneous, endothermic and physisorption process.
