Overview of enhancing biological treatment of coal chemical wastewater: New strategies and future directions

Coal chemical wastewater (CCW) is a type of refractory industrial wastewater, and its treatment has become the main bottleneck restricting the sustainable development of novel coal chemical industry. Biological treatment is considered as an economical, effective and environmentally friendly technology for CCW treatment. However, conventional biological process is difficult to achieve the efficient removal of refractory organics because of CCW with the characteristics of composition complexity and high toxicity. Therefore, seeking the novel enhancement strategy appears to be a favorable solution for enhancing biological treatment efficiency of CCW. This review focuses on presenting a comprehensive picture about the exogenous enhancement strategies for CCW biological treatment. The performance and potential application of exogenous enhancement strategies, including co-metabolic substrate enhancement, biofilm filler enhancement, adsorption material enhancement and conductive mediator enhancement, were expounded. Meanwhile, the enhancing mechanisms of different strategies were comprehensively discussed from a biological perspective. Furthermore, the prospects of enhancement strategies based on the engineering performance, economic cost and environmental impact (3E) evaluation were introduced. And novel enhancement strategy based on "low carbon emissions", "resource recycling" and "water environment security" in the context of carbon neutrality was proposed. Taken together, this review provides technical reference and new direction to facilitate the regulation and optimization of typical industrial wastewater biological treatment.

Comparative analysis of biological versus chemical synthesis of palladium nanoparticles for catalysis of chromium (VI) reduction

The discharge of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from several anthropogenic activities leads to environmental pollution. In this study, we explore a simple yet cost effective method for the synthesis of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles for the treatment of Cr(VI). The presence of elemental Pd [Pd(0)] was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). We show here that the biologically synthesized nanoparticles (Bio-PdNPs) exhibit improved catalytic reduction of Cr(VI) due to their size being smaller and also being highly dispersed as compared to chemically synthesized nanoparticles (Chem-PdNPs). The Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism was successfully used to model the kinetics. Using this model, the Bio-PdNPs were shown to perform better than Chem-PdNPs due to the rate constant (k_bio = 6.37 mmol s⁻¹ m⁻²) and Cr(VI) adsorption constant (K_Cr(VI),bio = 3.11 × 10⁻² L mmol⁻¹) of Bio-PdNPs being higher than the rate constant (k_chem = 3.83 mmol s⁻¹ m⁻²) and Cr(VI) adsorption constant (K_Cr(VI),chem = 1.14 × 10⁻² L mmol⁻¹) of Chem-PdNPs. In addition, product inhibition by trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] was high in Chem-PdNPs as indicated by the high adsorption constant of Cr(III) in Chem-PdNPs of K_Cr(III),chem = 52.9 L mmol⁻¹ as compared to the one for Bio-PdNPs of K_Cr(III),bio = 2.76 L mmol⁻¹.

Synthesis of Biogenic Palladium Nanoparticles Using Citrobacter sp. for Application as Anode Electrocatalyst in a Microbial Fuel Cell

Palladium (Pd) is a cheap and effective electrocatalyst that is capable of replacing platinum (Pt) in various applications. However, the problem in using chemically synthesized Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) is that they are mostly fabricated using toxic chemicals under severe conditions. In this study, we present a more environmentally-friendly process in fabricating biogenic Pd nanoparticles (Bio-PdNPs) using Citrobacter sp. isolated from wastewater sludge. Successful fabrication of Bio-PdNPs was achieved under anaerobic conditions at pH six and a temperature of 30 °C using sodium formate (HCOONa) as an electron donor. Citrobacter sp. showed biosorption capabilities with no enzymatic contribution to Pd(II) uptake during absence of HCOONa in both live and dead cells. Citrobacter sp. live cells also displayed high enzymatic contribution to the removal of Pd(II) by biological reduction. This was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) characterization, which revealed the presence Bio-PdNPs deposited on the bacterial cells. The bio-PdNPs successfully enhanced the anode performance of the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). The MFC with the highest Bio-PdNPs loading (4 mg Bio-PdNP/cm2) achieved a maximum power density of 539.3 mW/m3 (4.01 mW/m2) and peak voltage of 328.4 mV.

Overview of the state of the art of processes and technical bottlenecks for coal gasification wastewater treatment

CGWW is major waste stream resulting from a number of activities of the low/medium temperature gasification unit that occurs during the production of natural gas. The resulting effluent contains a broad spectrum of organic and inorganic contaminants and exerts a negative influence on the environment, mainly due to the presence of toxic and refractory compounds. So far, various technologies have been applied for treatment of CGWW, while few reviews are available in the literature. Thus, this review attempts to offer a comprehensive picture about CGWW. An overview about pretreatment, biological and advanced processes for treatment of CGWW is presented, and the degradation mechanism of toxic and refractory pollutants is also elaborated. Technical bottlenecks existing in the operation of coal chemical industries, including foam proliferation, odors and biotoxicity risk, are detailed analyzed. Finally, the prospects of treatment for CGWW are discussed based on the concept of "wastewater is money". The review can be provided as an effective technical support for the construction and operation of coal gasification industries.
