Seasonal variation of microbial community for the treatment of tail water in constructed wetland

Greenhouse gas emissions from rotating biological contactors combined with hybrid constructed wetlands treating polluted river

The rotating biological contactors combined with hybrid constructed wetlands (R-HCWs) has promising treatment performance, however, concerns persisted regarding greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions. In this study, GHGs in the R-HCWs was evaluated, and results revealed that R-HCWs facilitated nitrogen conversion and provided alternating oxygen environments, thereby promoting the reduction of N2O and CH4 emissions. Therefore, the comprehensive global warming potential (8.7±2.7 g CO2-eq·m-3·d-1) for handling unit volume of river water was low, thus, greater ecological benefits were achieved. The relative abundance of functional microorganisms such as Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Nitrospira and norank_f__norank_o__SBR1031, increased due to warm season, which promoted the nitrogen cycle and N2O emission reduction. Anammox and denitrifying bacteria showed significantly correlated with N2O and CH4 emissions (p < 0.01). This study provides valuable insights for the potential adoption of biological and ecological integrated treatment approach optimized for improving water and mitigating GHGs emissions.

Plastic particles affect N2O release via altering core microbial metabolisms in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been proven to effectively immobilize plastic particles. However, little is known about the differences in the impact of varying sized plastic particles on nitrous oxide (N2O) release, as well as the intervention mechanisms in CWs. Here, we built a lab-scale wetland model and introduced plastic particles of macro-, micro-, and nano-size at 100 μg/L for 370 days. The results showed that plastic particles of all sizes reduced N2O release in CWs, with the degrees being the strongest for the Nano group, followed by Micro and Macro groups. Meanwhile, 15N- and 18O-tracing experiment revealed that the ammoxidation process contributed the most N2O production, followed by denitrification. While for every N2O-releasing process, the contributing proportion of N2O in nitrification-coupled denitrification were most significantly cut down under exposing to macro-sized plastics and had an obvious increase in nitrifier denitrification in all groups, respectively. Finally, we revealed the three mechanism pathways of N2O release reduction with macro-, micro-, and nano-sized plastics by impacting carbon assimilation (RubisCO activity), ammonia oxidation (gene amo abundance and HAO activity), and N-ion transmembrane and reductase activities, respectively. Our findings thus provided novel insights into the potential effects of plastic particles in CWs as an eco-technology.

Purification of the secondary treatment tail water for wastewater reclamation by integrated subsurface-constructed wetlands

A whole-year investigation of full-scale integrated subsurface-constructed wetlands (ISCWs) was carried out to purify the tail water from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for wastewater reclamation under four plant species, four hydraulic loading rates (HLRs), and four seasons. The results showed that ISCWs were effective for the purification of WWTP discharge, with the average removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N, TN, and TP being 48%, 49%, 9%, and 30%, respectively. Typical pollutant concentrations in the treated effluent of ISCWs were 8.19 mg/L COD, 1.76 mg/L NH4+-N, 11.57 mg/L TN, and 0.36 mg/L TP, which met most of the water quality standards for reusing recycling water. Emergent plants with well-developed root systems may be capable of promoting the decontamination of ISCWs. Seasonal change played an important role in the treatment process: the removal of phosphorus by plant uptake and microbial utilization was more active in the warm season and the co-occurrence of organic degradation and nitrification, whereas the cold season is conducive to exothermic adsorption process of pollutants to substrates. Properly increasing the HLRs may improve the availability of ISCWs according to the requirement of effluent quality. Furthermore, the C/N ratio might be the key factor for the purification effect of ISCWs, because the COD level of WWTP discharge may change the process of NH4+-N biotransformation.

A microbial flora with superior pollutant removal efficiency and its fermentation process optimization

Microbial flora plays an important role in microorganism-enhanced technology. The pollutant degradation ability and viable counts of these agents are crucial to guarantee their practical application. In this study, an efficient pollutant-degrading microbial flora was screened, its medium components and culture conditions were optimized, and its effect was verified in zeolite trickling filter towers. After a 24 h culture under the optimal conditions, the viable count reached 4.76 × 109 cfu/mL, with the degradation rates of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) increased to 93.5%, 100%, 68.3%, 32.6%, and 85%, respectively. After optimizing the feeding strategy, the concentration of viable bacteria reached 5.80 × 109 cfu/mL. In the application effect verification experiment, the degradation rates of NH4+-N, TN, TP, and COD in the experimental group reached 96.69%, 75.18%, 73.82%, and 90.83%, respectively, showing a significant improvement compared to the results of the control group. The main components in the control group were Dokdonella, Brevundimonas, Alishewanella, Rhodobacter, Pseudoxanthomonas, and Thauera, whereas those in the experimental group were Dokdonella, Proteocatella, Rhodobacter, Dechlomonas, and Nitrospira. Proteocatella, Dechlomonas, and Nitrosra, which were unique to the experimental group, are common bacteria used for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This explains the difference in the sewage treatment capacity between the two groups. This study provides an alternative sewage treatment microbial flora with a reasonable production cost and high degradation efficiency for NH4+-N, TN, TP, and COD.

Investigation on the performance evaluation of vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland for the treatment of rural wastewater

In a rural country like India, low cost and decentralized treatment units like the vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland (VSSF CW) can be reflected as a novel wastewater system. In this concern, a pilot-scale VSSF CW unit of size 0.92 m × 0.92 m × 0.85 m bed planted with Typha latifolia and Phragmites australis was operated for a 12-month duration to treat simulated rural wastewater. During the operation, a constant head arrangement was made to maintain a continuous flow to achieve 5 different Hydraulic Retention Times (HRTs) of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 days in each season, such as winter, summer and rainy, to investigate the performance of the unit under different retention times. The reactor showed optimum removal efficiency at 6 days HRT at 12.5 cm/day Hydraulic Loading Rate (HLR) for organic matter removal. Both macrophytes and the microbial biomass of filter media effectively treated the rural wastewater. Average removal efficiency of the reactor during the entire study was 64.73%-88.80% for Chemical Oxygen Demand, 74.96%-95.34% for Biochemical Oxygen Demand, 40.13%-79.45% for Ammonia Nitrogen, 25.36%-65.65% for Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, 22.86%-58.48% for Phosphate phosphorus, 23.50%-55.45% for Total phosphorous, 74.91%-98.59% for Faecal Coliforms and 71.14%-95.31% for Total Coliforms respectively. Two-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Tukey's test showed that HRT had a significant impact on removal efficiency but not the season. Overall performance of the unit was good and study suggested that VSSF CW can be a smart alternative technology to treat rural wastewater before final disposal.

Nitrogen removal performance and bacterial communities in zeolite trickling filter under different influent C/N ratios

In this study, the degradation performance of nutrients in zeolite trickling filter (ZTF) with different influent C/N ratios and aeration conditions was investigated. Microaeration was beneficial for enhancing NH₄⁺-N removal performance. Due to the sufficient carbon source supply under a C/N ratio of 8, a high removal efficiency of NH₄⁺-N and TN was simultaneously observed in ZTF. In addition, TN removal mainly occurred at the bottom, which might be explained by the sufficient nutrients available for bacteria to multiply in this zone. The abundant genera were Acinetobacter, Gemmobacter, Flavobacterium, and Pseudomonas, all of which are heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HNAD) bacteria. In addition, biofilm only slowed down the adsorption rate but did not significantly reduce the adsorption capacity of zeolite. Bio-zeolite had NH₄⁺-N well adsorption capacity and bio-desorption capacity. Biological nitrogen removal performance was superior to physicochemical absorption of zeolite. The results suggested that the physicochemical of zeolite and biochemical reactions of microorganism coupling actions may be the main nitrogen transformation pathway in ZTF. Our research provides a reference for further understanding the nitrogen removal mechanism of zeolite bioreactors.

The occurrence and role of Nitrospira in nitrogen removal systems

Application of the modern microbial techniques changed the paradigm about the microorganisms performing nitrification. Numerous investigations recognized representatives of the genus Nitrospira as a key and predominant nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in biological nutrient removal systems, especially under low dissolved oxygen and substrate conditions. The recent discovery of Nitrospira capable of performing complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) raised a fundamental question about the actual role of Nitrospira in both nitrification steps. This review summarizes the current knowledge about morphological, physiological and genetic characteristics of the canonical and comammox Nitrospira. Potential implications of comammox for the functional aspects of nitrogen removal have been highlighted. The complex meta-analysis of literature data was applied to identify specific individual variables and their combined interactions on the Nitrospira abundance. In addition to dissolved oxygen and influent nitrogen concentrations, temperature and pH may play an important role in enhancing or suppressing the Nitrospira activity.
