Purification of the secondary treatment tail water for wastewater reclamation by integrated subsurface-constructed wetlands

A whole-year investigation of full-scale integrated subsurface-constructed wetlands (ISCWs) was carried out to purify the tail water from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for wastewater reclamation under four plant species, four hydraulic loading rates (HLRs), and four seasons. The results showed that ISCWs were effective for the purification of WWTP discharge, with the average removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N, TN, and TP being 48%, 49%, 9%, and 30%, respectively. Typical pollutant concentrations in the treated effluent of ISCWs were 8.19 mg/L COD, 1.76 mg/L NH4+-N, 11.57 mg/L TN, and 0.36 mg/L TP, which met most of the water quality standards for reusing recycling water. Emergent plants with well-developed root systems may be capable of promoting the decontamination of ISCWs. Seasonal change played an important role in the treatment process: the removal of phosphorus by plant uptake and microbial utilization was more active in the warm season and the co-occurrence of organic degradation and nitrification, whereas the cold season is conducive to exothermic adsorption process of pollutants to substrates. Properly increasing the HLRs may improve the availability of ISCWs according to the requirement of effluent quality. Furthermore, the C/N ratio might be the key factor for the purification effect of ISCWs, because the COD level of WWTP discharge may change the process of NH4+-N biotransformation.

Multifactorial Analysis of Environmental Metabolomic Data in Ecotoxicology: Wild Marine Mussel Exposed to WWTP Effluent as a Case Study

Environmental metabolomics is a powerful approach to investigate the response of organisms to contaminant exposure at a molecular scale. However, metabolomic responses to realistic environmental conditions can be hindered by factors intrinsic to the environment and the organism. Hence, a well-designed experimental exposure associated with adequate statistical analysis could be helpful to better characterize and relate the observed variability to its different origins. In the current study, we applied a multifactorial experiment combined to Analysis of variance Multiblock Orthogonal Partial Least Squares (AMOPLS), to assess the metabolic response of wild marine mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, exposed to a wastewater treatment plant effluent, considering gender as an experimental factor. First, the total observed variability was decomposed to highlight the contribution of each effect related to the experimental factors. Both the exposure and the interaction gender × exposure had a statistically significant impact on the observed metabolic alteration. Then, these metabolic patterns were further characterized by analyzing the individual variable contributions to each effect. A main change in glycerophospholipid levels was highlighted in both males and females as a common response, possibly caused by oxidative stress, which could lead to reproductive disorders, whereas metabolic alterations in some polar lipids and kynurenine pathway were rather gender-specific. This may indicate a disturbance in the energy metabolism and immune system only in males. Finally, AMOPLS is a useful tool facilitating the interpretation of complex metabolomic data and is expected to have a broad application in the field of ecotoxicology.

Characterization of Aerobic Denitrifying Bacterium Pseudomonas mendocina Strain GL6 and Its Potential Application in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent

To remove nitrate in wastewater treatment plant effluent, an aerobic denitrifier was newly isolated from the surface flow constructed wetland and identified as Pseudomonas mendocina strain GL6. It exhibited efficient aerobic denitrification ability, with the nitrate removal rate of 6.61 mg (N)·L⁻¹·h⁻¹. Sequence amplification indicated that the denitrification genes napA, nirK, norB, and nosZ were present in strain GL6. Nitrogen balance analysis revealed that approximately 74.5% of the initial nitrogen was removed as gas products. In addition, the response surface methodology experiments showed that the maximum removal of total nitrogen occurred at pH 7.76, C/N ratio of 11.2, temperature of 27.8 °C, and with shaking at 133 rpm. Furthermore, under the optimized cultivation condition, strain GL6 was added into wastewater treatment plant effluent and the removal rates of nitrate nitrogen and total nitrogen reached 95.6% and 73.6%, respectively. Thus, P. mendocina strain GL6 has high denitrification potential for deep improvement of effluent quality.

Adsorption of Trace Estrogens in Ultrapure and Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent by Magnetic Graphene Oxide

In the current study, graphene oxide, Fe3+, and Fe2+ were used for the synthesis of magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) by an in situ chemical coprecipitation method. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the well-prepared MGO. The prepared MGO was used as an adsorbent to remove five typical estrogens (estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (17α-E2), estriol (E3), and synthetic estrogen (EE2)) at the ppb level from spiked ultrapure water and wastewater treatment plant effluent. The results indicated that the MGO can efficiently remove estrogens from both spiked ultrapure water and wastewater treatment plant effluent in 30 min at wide pH ranges from 3 to 11. The temperature could significantly affect removal performance. A removal efficiency of more than 90% was obtained at 35 °C in just 5 min, but at least 60 min was needed to get the same removal efficiency at 5 °C. In addition, an average of almost 80% of the estrogens can still be removed after 5 cycles of MGO regeneration but less than 40% can be reached after 10 cycles. These results indicate that MGO has potential for practical applications to remove lower levels of estrogens from real water matrixes and merits further evaluation.
