Environmentally friendly cellulose-based polyelectrolytes in wastewater treatment

Rheology of Suspensions of TEMPO-Oxidised and Cationic Cellulose Nanofibrils-The Effect of Chemical Pre-Treatment

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are particles with a high aspect ratio. Typically, chemically pre-treated CNFs (containing anionic or cationic charged groups) consist of long fibrils (up to 2 μm) with very low thickness (less than 10 nm). Derived from their high aspect ratio, CNFs form strong hydrogels with high elasticity at low concentrations. Thus, CNF suspensions appear as an interesting rheology modifier to be applied in cosmetics, paints, foods, and as a mineral suspending agent, among other applications. The high viscosity results from the strong 3D fibril network, which is related to the good fibrillation of the material, allowing the nanofibrils to overlap. The overlap concentration (c*) was found to vary from ca. 0.13 to ca. 0.60 wt.% depending on the type and intensity of the pre-treatment applied during the preparation of the CNFs. The results confirm the higher tendency for the fibres treated with (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) to form a 3D network, resulting in the lowest c*. For the TEMPO-oxidised CNF suspensions, it was also found that aggregation is improved at acidic pH conditions due to lower charge repulsion among fibrils, leading to an increase in the suspension viscosity as well as higher apparent yield stresses. TEMPO CNF suspensions with a low content of carboxylic groups tend to precipitate at moderately acidic pH values.

Assessment of the Performance of Cationic Cellulose Derivatives as Calcium Carbonate Flocculant for Papermaking

Cationic polyacrylamides (CPAMs) are usually used as filler retention agents in papermaking formulations. However, increasing environmental restrictions and their non-renewable origin have driven research into bio-based alternatives. In this context, cationic lignocellulosic derivatives have been attracting considerable research interest as a potential substitute. In this work, distinct cationic celluloses with degrees of substitution of between 0.02 and 1.06 and with distinct morphological properties were synthesized via the cationization of bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp, using a direct cationization with (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) or a two-step cationization, where the cellulose was first oxidized to form dialdehyde cellulose and was then made to react with Girard’s reagent T (GT). Fibrillated samples were produced by subjecting some samples to a high-pressure homogenization treatment. The obtained samples were evaluated regarding their potential to flocculate and retain precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), and their performance was compared to that of a commercial CPAM. The cationic fibrillated celluloses, with a degree of substitution of ca. 0.13–0.16, exhibited the highest flocculation performance of all the cationic celluloses and were able to increase the filler retention from 43% (with no retention agent) to ca. 61–62% (with the addition of 20 mg/g of PCC). Although it was not possible to achieve the performance of CPAM (filler retention of 73% with an addition of 1 mg/g of PCC), the results demonstrated the potential of cationic cellulose derivatives for use as bio-based retention agents.

Effect of cationization pretreatment on the properties of cationic Eucalyptus micro/nanofibrillated cellulose

Micro/nanofibrillated celluloses (M/NFCs) have attracted considerable research interest over the past few decades, with various pretreatments being used to reduce energy consumption and/or increase fibrillation. To date, few studies have considered cationization as a pretreatment for their preparation. In this work, quaternary ammonium groups were attached to cellulose fibers by a direct reaction with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride or by a two-step method (periodate oxidation + Girard's reagent T). The cationic fibers with degrees of substitution (DS) between 0.02 and 0.36, were subjected to homogenization treatment. The morphological properties, chemical composition, and rheological behavior were evaluated to assess the effect of DS and the effect of the cationization method (for samples with similar DS). The two-step cationization resulted in significant degradation of the cellulose structure, leading to the formation of short fibrils and solubilization of the material, ranging from 6% to almost complete solubilization at a DS of 0.36. Direct cationization resulted in longer fibrils with an average diameter of 1 μm, and no significant cellulose degradation was observed, leading to a more cohesive gel-like material (at 1 wt%). These observations clearly show the strong influence of the cationization method on the final properties of the cationic cellulosic materials.

High-performance delignification of invasive tree species wood with ionic liquid and deep eutectic solvent for the production of cellulose-based polyelectrolytes

An efficient and eco-friendly process for lignocellulosic biomass fractionation is essential for the production of high value-added bioproducts from biomass. The present work aimed to obtain cellulose-rich materials from the wood of an invasive tree species (Acacia dealbata) using an appropriate choice of ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and of the processing conditions, for the subsequent production of cationic wood-based polyelectrolytes. In the pretreatment step, the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate (IL) + H2O and choline chloride + imidazole (DES) systems demonstrated a remarkable ability to remove lignin from acacia, reaching up to 92.4 and 90.2% of delignification, respectively. However, the DES pretreatment revealed to be more selective for lignin removal with lower cellulose losses (less than 15%) than the IL treatment (up to 30%) and less cellulose depolymerization. The hemicellulose was also removed but in a lesser extent with the DES treatment. Both systems could provide treated materials with a very high cellulose content (≥89%). Afterwards, cationic polyelectrolytes having a considerable content of quaternary ammonium groups (up to 3.6 mmol g-1) were obtained directly from the IL- and DES-pretreated woods. The treated woods, when used as raw materials for cationization reaction, allow to synthesize water-soluble polyelectrolytes with potential to be applied in wastewater treatment, pharmaceutical or cosmetic products.

Enlightening the characteristics of bioflocculant of endophytic actinomycetes from marine algae and its biosorption of heavy metal removal

The removal of toxic heavy metal ions from contaminated environments is a great challenge and requires an alternative rapid, efficient, economical bioremediation approach. Henceforth, bioflocculant producing endophytic actinobacterial sp. was isolated from heavy metal contaminated marine environments for heavy metal biosorption process. After molecular characterization, the isolated actinomycete starin was Nocardiopsis sp. GRG 3 (KT235642). It was indicated that the maximum flocculating activity of 80.90% with glucose, and yield is 4.52 g L¹. The optimum flocculating activity was reached at pH 7 in the presence of CaCl₂ ions. Further, the bioflocculent produced Nocardiopsis sp. GRG 3 (KT235642) was characterized by fourier transform infrared analysis spectra (FTIR) and displayed the presence of carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino groups and characteristic of more polysaccharide and protein. The heavy metal sorption by bioflocculant Nocardiopsis sp. GRG 3 (KT235642) was effectively removed 55.90% Cd, 85.90% Cr, 74.7% Pb, and 51.90% Hg. Therefore, this study was proved that the bioflocculant derived from endophytic actinobacteria, Nocardiopsis sp. GRG 3 (KT235642) as a effective alternative method for decreasing the heavy metals towards sustainable environmental management.

Evaluation of Anionic Eco-Friendly Flocculants Prepared from Eucalyptus Pulps with Diverse Lignin Contents for Application in Effluent Treatment

Modification of cellulosic-rich materials for the production of cellulose-based polyelectrolytes (PELs) can bring several benefits, such as high biodegradability and low or no toxicity, for numerous applications, when compared with the use of traditional, synthetic PELs. Moreover, cellulose-based PELs originating from wood wastes, contribute to the valorisation of such wastes. In this work, Eucalyptus pulps with diverse lignin contents, extracted from Eucalyptus wood wastes, were anionized by a two-step reaction procedure (periodate oxidation followed by sulfonation). Applying different reaction times (24-144 h) in the sulfonation step allowed for producing a range of cellulose-based anionic polyelectrolytes with different characteristics. PELs obtained after 24 and 72 h of sulfonation were thoroughly characterized (Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, zeta potential and degree of substitution (elemental analysis) and hydrodynamic diameter (dynamic light scattering)) and subsequently evaluated as flocculants in decolouration processes of model effluents (Methylene Blue and Crystal Violet) and an industrial effluent from a textile industry. Furthermore, possible flocculation mechanisms induced by the use of the various PELs are discussed. Results are compared with those obtained with a commonly applied, synthetic flocculant (polyacrylamide). It is demonstrated that it was possible to obtain water-soluble lignocellulosic PELs starting from raw materials with different degrees of purity and that those PELs are promising eco-friendly alternative flocculation agents for the decolouration of effluents.

From Cellulose to Cellulose Nanofibrils-A Comprehensive Review of the Preparation and Modification of Cellulose Nanofibrils

This review summarizes the preparation methods of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and the progress in the research pertaining to their surface modification. Moreover, the preparation and surface modification of nanocellulose were comprehensively introduced based on the existing literature. The review focuses on the mechanical treatment of cellulose, the surface modification of fibrillated fibers during pretreatment, the surface modification of nanocellulose and the modification of CNFs and their functional application. In the past five years, research on cellulose nanofibrils has progressed with developments in nanomaterials research technology. The number of papers on nanocellulose alone has increased by six times. However, owing to its high energy consumption, high cost and challenging industrial production, the applications of nanocellulose remain limited. In addition, although nanofibrils exhibit strong biocompatibility and barrier and mechanical properties, their high hydrophilicity limits their practical application. Current research on cellulose nanofibrils has mainly focused on the industrial production of CNFs, their pretreatment and functional modification and their compatibility with other biomass materials. In the future, with the rapid development of modern science and technology, the demand for biodegradable biomass materials will continue to increase. Furthermore, research on bio-based nanomaterials is expected to advance in the direction of functionalization and popularization.

Recent Achievements in Polymer Bio-Based Flocculants for Water Treatment

Polymer flocculants are used to promote solid-liquid separation processes in potable water and wastewater treatment. Recently, bio-based flocculants have received a lot of attention due to their superior advantages over conventional synthetic polymers or inorganic agents. Among natural polymers, polysaccharides show many benefits such as biodegradability, non-toxicity, ability to undergo different chemical modifications, and wide accessibility from renewable sources. The following article provides an overview of bio-based flocculants and their potential application in water treatment, which may be an indication to look for safer alternatives compared to synthetic polymers. Based on the recent literature, a new approach in searching for biopolymer flocculants sources, flocculation mechanisms, test methods, and factors affecting this process are presented. Particular attention is paid to flocculants based on starch, cellulose, chitosan, and their derivatives because they are low-cost and ecological materials, accepted in industrial practice. New trends in water treatment technology, including biosynthetic polymers, nanobioflocculants, and stimulant-responsive flocculants are also considered.

Microplastics in Ecosystems: From Current Trends to Bio-Based Removal Strategies

Plastics are widely used due to their excellent properties, inexpensiveness and versatility leading to an exponential consumption growth during the last decades. However, most plastic does not biodegrade in any meaningful sense; it can exist for hundreds of years. Only a small percentage of plastic waste is recycled, the rest being dumped in landfills, incinerated or simply not collected. Waste-water treatment plants can only minimize the problem by trapping plastic particles of larger size and some smaller ones remain within oxidation ponds or sewage sludge, but a large amount of microplastics still contaminate water streams and marine systems. Thus, it is clear that in order to tackle this potential ecological disaster, new strategies are necessary. This review aims at briefly introducing the microplastics threat and critically discusses emerging technologies, which are capable to efficiently clean aqueous media. Special focus is given to novel greener approaches based on lignocellulose flocculants and other biomaterials. In the final part of the present review, it was given a proof of concept, using a bioflocculant to remove micronized plastic from aqueous medium. The obtained results demonstrate the huge potential of these biopolymers to clean waters from the microplastics threat, using flocculants with appropriate structure.

Characterization of Two Cactus Formulation-Based Flocculants and Investigation on Their Flocculating Ability for Cationic and Anionic Dyes Removal

Dye invasion in wastewaters is undeniably one of the crucial environmental concerns in addition to the supplement of toxic synthetic chemical flocculants used for color removal using the conventional coagulation-flocculation process. With the aim to improve the flocculation stage in terms of reagents safety and ensure dyes removal, the present study explores the flocculating effectiveness of two natural, stable, and eco-friendly cactus formulations, namely 60 °C oven-dried (DP) and lyophilized (LP) cladodes. Both formulations were assessed to treat cationic (Methylene blue; MB) and anionic (Methyl Orange; MO) dye solutions as a substitution attempt for the currently questioned employed synthetic chemical flocculants. Obtained results demonstrate that, in conjunction with alum as coagulant, the lyophilized powder (LP) bio-based flocculant appears to be the most efficient cactus formulation, showing a significant color (83%) and a turbidity (69%) abatement for the cationic dye (MB) and, respectively, 63% and 62% for the anionic one (MO). Additionally, the flocculation activity of the LP formula remained high over an eight-month period of storage. Moreover, based on the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis and the chemical characterization of cactus formulations, the occurring flocculation mechanisms of the dye removal are presumed to be based on both adsorption and bridging phenomena. Further, the significant color and turbidity decline achieved upon the addition of the lyophilized cactus cladodes powder (LP), enhancing thus the coagulation performance of the alum-based coagulant, proved the effectiveness of this bio-flocculant compared to the commonly used chemical flocculant (polyacrylamide). Hence, it was suggested that lyophilized cactus cladodes as a natural flocculant could be one of the effective surrogates to chemical flocculants conventionally used in wastewater treatment for the sake of a safer and sustainable environment.

Evaluation of Anionic and Cationic Pulp-Based Flocculants With Diverse Lignin Contents for Application in Effluent Treatment From the Textile Industry: Flocculation Monitoring

In wastewater treatment, flocculation is a widely used solid/liquid separation technique, which typically employs a charged polymer, a polyelectrolyte (PEL). Polyelectrolytes features, such as charge type, charge density and molecular weight, are essential parameters affecting the mechanism of flocculation and subsequent floc sedimentation. The effectiveness of the process is also influenced by the characteristics of the system (e.g., type, size, and available surface area of suspended particles, pH of the medium, charge of suspended particles). Thus, a good understanding of the flocculation kinetics, involved mechanisms and flocs structure is essential in identifying the most adequate treatment conditions, having also into consideration possible subsequent treatments. In this study, Eucalyptus bleached pulp and a cellulosic pulp with high lignin content (~4.5 wt%) obtained from Eucalyptus wood waste were used for bio-PELs production. Firstly, a pre-treatment with sodium periodate increased the pulps reactivity. To produce cationic cellulose the oxidation step was followed by the introduction of cationic groups in the cellulose chains, through reaction with Girard's reagent T. Applying different molar ratios (0.975 and 3.9) of Girard's reagent T to aldehyde groups led to cationic PELs with diverse charge density. On the other hand, to obtain anionic cellulose a sulfonation reaction with sodium metabisulfite was applied to the intermediate dialdehyde cellulose-based products, during 24 or 72 h, and anionic-PELs with diverse features were obtained. The developed water soluble, anionic and cationic bio-PELs were characterized and tested as flocculation agents for a textile industry effluent treatment. Initially, jar-tests were used to tune the most effective flocculation procedure (pH, flocculant dosage, etc.). Flocculation using these conditions was then monitored continuously, over time, using laser diffraction spectroscopy (LDS). Due to the small size of the dyes molecules, a dual system with an inorganic complexation agent (bentonite) was essential for effective decolouration of the effluent. Performance in the treatment was monitored first by turbidity removal evaluation (75-88% with cationic-PELs, 75-81% with anionic-PELs) and COD reduction evaluation (79-81% with cationic-PELs, 63-77% with anionic-PELs) in the jar tests. Additionally, the evolution of flocs characteristics (structure and size) during their growth and the flocculation kinetics, were studied using the LDS technique, applying the different PELs produced and for a range of PEL concentration. The results obtained through this monitoring procedure allowed to discuss the possible flocculation mechanisms involved in the process. The results obtained with the bio-PELs were compared with those obtained using synthetic PELs, commonly applied in effluents treatment, polyacrylamides. The developed bio-PELs can be competitive, eco-friendly flocculation agents for effluents treatment from several industries, when compared to traditional synthetic flocculants with a significant environmental footprint. Moreover, LDS proved to be a feasible technique to monitor flocculation processes, even when a real industrial effluent is being tested.

Cationization of Eucalyptus wood waste pulps with diverse lignin contents for potential application in colored wastewater treatment

Modification of cellulosic-rich materials such as Eucalyptus wood waste and production of cellulose-based polyelectrolytes (PELs) presents several advantages for a variety of applications, when compared to the utilization of synthetic PELs, due to the nature, availability, high biodegradability and low or no toxicity of cellulosic materials. Moreover, valorization of the cellulosic waste itself to provide end products with higher added value is also an important aspect. In the present work, the objective was to evaluate the possibility of cationizing more complex and heterogeneous chemical pulps, obtained from Eucalyptus wood waste, with different cellulose purity and a relatively high lignin content (up to 4.5%). A two-step reaction (with sodium periodate and Girard's reagent T) was employed and a range of cellulose-based cationic polyelectrolytes were produced with different degrees of substitution. The final products were characterized by several analytical techniques and the bio-PELs with the highest and the lowest substitution degree by cationic groups were evaluated in a new application, as flocculants in the decoloration of model effluents, bentonite having been used as an inorganic aid. Also, possible mechanisms of flocculation were discussed and the results compared with those of a synthetic flocculant, often used in these treatments, cationic polyacrylamide. Lignocellulosic-PELs proved to be very favorable eco-friendly flocculation agents for the decoloration of dye-containing waters with potential application in several industries.

Removal of the commercial pesticides Novadim Progress, Bordeaux mixture and Karate Zeon by pullulan derivatives based flocculants

Cationic pullulan derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated, for the first time, as flocculants for the separation of the commercial pesticides, Novadim Progress (organophosphoric type), Bordeax mixture and Karate Zeon (pyrethroid type) from synthetic wastewater. The investigated polymer samples contained either pendent tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium salts groups. The separation efficiency was followed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, while the information regarding the mechanism involved in the separation of pesticide particles have been obtained by zeta potential. UV-Vis spectroscopy data showed strong pesticide particles/polycation interactions in case of Novadim Progress and Bordeaux mixture (maximum pesticide removal between 90% and 98%). Good separation efficiency (around 80%) of Karate Zeon emulsion was also noticed. The zeta potential measurements indicated that the charge neutralization was the common flocculation mechanism for the removal of these pesticides. In addition, the hydrogen bondings and chelation of copper ions by amide and/or tertiary amino groups of the polycations had a noteworthy contribution to the pesticide removal.
