Abstract
Assessing oxidative stress is vital in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications. This systematic review aims to identify the most important oxidative stress markers in T2DM patients and predict associated complications. A literature search was conducted from 2013 to 2023, focusing on case-control, cohort, cross-sectional, and randomized control trials. The included studies had open access and scientific methodologies for assessing oxidative stress markers, while the excluded studies were not published in English or lacked primary objectives related to oxidative stress markers and T2DM or its complications. The quality of eligible studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies and the Jadad Scale for RCTs. Eighteen studies were selected for the review and 25 potential markers like malondialdehyde (MDA), 11 thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and isoprostanes were found to be the most commonly used markers to assess oxidative stress in T2DM. These markers help to assess oxidative stress levels in T2DM individuals as well as correlate with diabetic complications. Therefore, assessment and understanding of the role of oxidative stress in T2DM pathophysiology are crucial for improving patient care and mitigating complications.

Abstract
Fermented dairy products are the good source of different species of live lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which are beneficial microbes well characterized for their health-promoting potential. Traditionally, dietary intake of fermented dairy foods has been related to different health-promoting benefits including antimicrobial activity and modulation of the immune system, among others. In recent years, emerging evidence suggests a contribution of dairy LAB in the prophylaxis and therapy of non-communicable diseases. Live bacterial cells or their metabolites can directly impact physiological responses and/or act as signalling molecules mediating more complex communications. This review provides up-to-date knowledge on the interactions between LAB isolated from dairy products (dairy LAB) and human health by discussing the concept of the food–gut-health axis. In particular, some bioactivities and probiotic potentials of dairy LAB have been provided on their involvement in the gut–brain axis and non-communicable diseases mainly focusing on their potential in the treatment of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel diseases, and cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased oxidative stress, leukocyte telomere length (LTL) shortening, endothelial dysfunction, and lower insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 concentrations reflect key molecular mechanisms of aging. We hypothesized that biomarkers representing these pathways are associated with measures of subclinical atherosclerosis and all-cause mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS We evaluated up to 2,314 Framingham Offspring Study participants (mean age 61 years, 55% women) with available biomarkers of aging: LTL, circulating concentrations of IGF-1, asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA), and urinary F2-Isoprostanes indexed to urinary creatinine. We evaluated the association of each biomarker with coronary artery calcium [ln (CAC+1)] and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). In multivariable-adjusted linear regression models, higher ADMA levels were associated with higher CAC values (βADMA per 1-SD increase 0.25; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.11, 0.39]). Additionally, shorter LTL and lower IGF-1 values were associated with higher IMT values (βLTL -0.08, 95%CI -0.14, -0.02, and βIGF-1 -0.04, 95%CI -0.08, -0.01, respectively). During a median follow-up of 15.5 years, 593 subjects died. In multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models, LTL and IGF-1 values were inversely associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratios [HR] per SD increase in biomarker, 0.85, 95% CI 0.74-0.99, and 0.90, 95% CI 0.82-0.98 for LTL and IGF-1, respectively). F2-Isoprostanes and ADMA values were positively associated with all-cause mortality (HR per SD increase in biomarker, 1.15, 95% CI, 1.10-1.22, and 1.10, 95% CI, 1.02-1.20, respectively). CONCLUSION In our prospective community-based study, aging-related biomarkers were associated with measures of subclinical atherosclerosis cross-sectionally and with all-cause mortality prospectively, supporting the concept that these biomarkers may reflect the aging process in community-dwelling adults.

Abstract
Malondialdehyde-modified low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL) is recognized as a surrogate marker of lipid oxidation and is associated with arteriosclerosis. However, there are limited reports on the relationship between heart failure and MDA-LDL. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether MDA-LDL is activated in patients with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and examine our hypothesis that the B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) masks the enhancement of MDA-LDL in patients with LV dysfunction by its strong antioxidative action. The study population comprised 2,976 patients with various cardiovascular diseases. Patients were divided into four groups depending on the LV ejection fraction (LVEF) or plasma BNP level. A nonparametric analysis with the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to perform an interquartile comparison. In addition, structural equation modeling and Bayesian estimation were used to compare the effects of LVEF and BNP on MDA-LDL. MDA-LDL levels did not significantly change (P > 0.05) with respect to the degree of LVEF among the four groups. In contrast, MDA-LDL levels were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) with respect to the degree of BNP among the four groups. A path model based on structural equation modeling clearly showed a significant effect of LVEF (standardized regression coefficient; β: -0.107, P < 0.001) and BNP (β: -0.114, P < 0.001) on MDA-LDL, with a significant inverse association between LVEF and BNP (correlation coefficient -0.436, P < 0.001). MDA-LDL should be activated in patients with LV dysfunction; however, BNP is thought to exert a strong compensatory suppression on lipid oxidation, masking the relationship between heart failure and lipid oxidation.

Abstract
Enhanced lipid peroxidation and elevated interleukin-6 levels are common in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Atherosclerotic vascular complications greatly contribute to morbidity and mortality in diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess the relation of lipid peroxidation and interleukin-6 with carotid atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods This cross-sectional study included 90 type 2 diabetes mellitus male patients with age ≥ 40 years and 30 healthy male subjects matched for age. All of them were subjected to measuring of 8-iso prostaglandin F2α as a marker of lipid peroxidation, interleukin-6 and carotid intima media thickness as a marker of carotid atherosclerosis. Results Both 8-iso prostaglandin F2α and interleukin-6 were found to have significant positive correlation with carotid intima media thickness (P < 0.001) and both were found to be significant predictors of the presence of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in multiple regression analysis. Conclusion Lipid peroxidation and interleukin-6 may play an important role in atherogenesis in type 2 diabetes mellitus and limiting their effects may reduce atherosclerotic vascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Objective Accumulation of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is considered to be a cardiovascular risk factor independent from visceral adiposity, obesity, hypertension and diabetes. We explored the parameters related to EAT accumulation, aiming to clarify the novel pathophysiological roles of EAT in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods We examined the laboratory values, including cystatinC, and surrogate markers used for evaluating atherosclerosis. EAT was measured as the sum of the adipose tissue area, obtained by plain computed tomography scans in 208 subjects with T2DM but no history of coronary artery disease. Results EAT correlated positively with age, body mass index (BMI), visceral fat area, leptin, cystatin C and C-peptide, while correlating negatively with adiponectin, estimated glomerular filteration rate (eGFR) and the liver-to-spleen ratio. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed serum cystatin C (β = 0.175), leptin (β = 0.536), BMI (β = 0.393) and age (β = 0.269) to be the only parameters showing independent statistically significant associations with EAT. When cystatin C was replaced with eGFR, eGFR showed no significant correlation with EAT. In reverse analysis, serum cystatin C was significantly associated with EAT after adjustment in multivariate analysis. Discussion EAT accumulation and elevated cystatin C have been independently regarded as risk factors influencing atherosclerosis. The strong association between EAT and cystatin C demonstrated herein indicates that EAT accumulation may play an important role in Cystatin C secretion, possibly contributing to cardiometabolic risk in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, malondialdehyde-modified low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL), MDA-LDL/LDL-cholesterol in serum, and blood pressure are considered useful risk markers of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to examine whether a fermented milk containing Streptococcus thermophilus YIT 2001 (ST), which has high anti-oxidative activity, would benefit healthy and mildly hyper-LDL-cholesterolaemic adults via a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. ST-fermented milk or non-fermented placebo milk (PC) was consumed once a day for 12 weeks by 29 and 30 subjects, respectively, with average serum LDL-cholesterol levels of about 140 mg/dl. Serum levels of LDL-cholesterol and MDA-LDL and blood pressure were analysed before (baseline) and after consumption. Comparisons of the responses between both groups were assessed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA, with the baseline value as the covariate). ANCOVA demonstrated that the ST group had significant reductions in MDA-LDL, MDA-LDL/LDL-cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) compared with the PC group during the consumption period (P<0.05). Moreover, stratified analysis revealed that there were significant reductions in MDA-LDL, MDA-LDL/LDL-cholesterol, SBP, and DBP in the ST group compared with the PC group during the consumption period in subjects who had above median (65 U/l) levels of oxidative stress marker MDA-LDL at baseline (P<0.05), but not in subjects with levels below the median. These findings suggest that daily consumption of ST-fermented milk may be beneficial in healthy or mildly hyper-LDL cholesterolaemic subjects through reductions in risk marker values of oxidative stress and/or cardiovascular diseases. The benefits were particularly remarkable in subjects who had higher levels of MDA-LDL.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to diabetes diagnosed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy that is not clearly either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. GDM is a common medical complication in pregnancy that has been rapidly increasing worldwide. GDM is associated with both short- and long-term health issues for both mothers and offspring. Consistent with type 2 diabetes, peripheral insulin resistance contributes to the hyperglycemia associated with GDM. Accordingly, it is important to identify strategies to reduce the insulin resistance associated with GDM. To date, observational studies have shown that exercise can be a non-invasive therapeutic option for preventing and managing GDM that can be readily applied to the antenatal population. However, the relevant mechanisms for these outcomes are yet to be fully elucidated. The present review aimed to explain the potential mechanisms of exercise from the perspective of reducing the insulin resistance, which is the root cause of GDM. Exercise recommendations and opinions of exercise during pregnancy are briefly summarized.

Abstract
AIM Advanced glycation end products (AGE) are considered to be among the critical pathogenic factors involved in the progression of diabetic complications. Skin autofluorescence (AF), a noninvasive measurement of AGE accumulation, has been recognized as a useful and convenient marker for diabetic vascular diseases in Caucasians. This study aimed to evaluate the association of tissue AGE, assessed using skin AF, with coronary artery calcification in Japanese subjects with type 2 diabetes. METHODS In total, 122 Japanese subjects with type 2 diabetes enrolled in this cross-sectional study underwent multi-slice computed tomography for total coronary artery calcium scores (CACS) estimation and examination with a skin AF reader. RESULTS Skin AF positively correlated with age, sex, diabetes duration, pulse wave velocity, systolic blood pressure, serum creatinine, and CACS. In addition, skin AF results negatively correlated with BMI, eGFR, and serum C-peptide concentration. According to multivariate analysis, age and systolic blood pressure showed strong positive correlation and eGFR showed negative correlation with skin AF values. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between skin AF values and logCACS, independent of age, sex, diabetes duration, HbA1c, BMI, IMT, and blood pressure. However, skin AF showed no association with serum levels of AGE, such as Nε-(carboxymethyl) lysine and 3-deoxyglucosone. CONCLUSION Skin AF results positively correlated with CACS in Japanese subjects with type 2 diabetes. This result indicates that AGE plays a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic macrovascular disease. Measurement of skin AF values may be useful for assessing the severity of diabetic complications in Japanese subjects.

Abstract
AIMS To elucidate the levels of malondialdehyde-modified LDL (MDA-LDL)-related variables for predicting coronary artery stenosis (CAS) by coronary CT angiography (CCTA) in asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS Enrolled were 36 Japanese patients with T2DM who underwent CCTA and in whom MDA-LDL levels were measured. Definition of CAS was luminal narrowing of ≥50%. Trends through tertiles of each MDA-LDL-related variable were analyzed with a general linear model. The ability of each MDA-LDL-related variable to predict CAS was compared to areas under the curve (AUCs) in receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. RESULTS Seventeen patients had CAS. Each MDA-LDL-related variable was an independent predictor of CAS (P = 0.039 for MDALDL, P = 0.013 for MDA-LDL/LDL-C, P = 0.047 for MDA-LDL/HDL-C, and P = 0.013 for (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C). AUCs of MDA-LDL, MDA-LDL/LDL-C, MDA-LDL/HDL-C, and (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C were 0.675 (95% CI 0.496-0.854), 0.765 (0.602-0.927), 0.752 (0.592-0.913), and 0.799 (0.643-0.955), respectively, for predicting CAS. Trends throughout the tertiles showed significant associations between MDA-LDL/LDL-C, MDA-LDL/HDL-C, or (MDALDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C and CAS (P = 0.003 for MDA-LDL/LDL-C, P = 0.042 for MDA-LDL/HDL-C, and P = 0.001 for (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C). CONCLUSIONS Data suggest that measurements of MDA-LDL/LDL-C, MDA-LDL/HDLC, and (MDA-LDL/LDL-C)/HDL-C are useful for predicting CAS.
