A Review of Different Types of DOE Methods as a Useful Platform for Improving the Performance of Nano Adsorbents in Removal Systems of Pollutants

Improved microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation in the lake through in silico method

The impact of microplastics in lake water environments on microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation has attracted global attention. The molecular dynamic simulation method was used to design microplastic additive proportioning schemes for improving microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation. Results showed that the harm of microplastics can be effectively alleviated by adjusting the proportioning scheme of plastic additives. Besides, the decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) was identified as the main additive that affect the microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation. Thus, a molecular modification based on CiteSpace visual analysis was firstly used and 12 DBDPO derivatives were designed. After the screening, DBDPO-2 and DBDPO-5 became the environmentally friendly DBDPO alternatives, with the highest microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation ability enhancement of over 25 %. Compared to DBDPO, DBDPO derivatives were found easier to stimulate the adsorption and binding ability of surrounding hotspot amino acids to CO2 and ribulose-5-phosphate, increasing the solvent-accessible surface area of microplastics, thus improving the microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation ability. This study provides theoretical support for simultaneously promoting the microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation in the lake water environment and provides scientific basis for the protection and sustainable development of lake water ecosystem.

Effect of Sulfide and Chloride Ions on Pitting Corrosion of Type 316 Austenitic Stainless Steel in Groundwater Conditions Using Response Surface Methodology

This study investigates the corrosion resistance of Type 316 stainless steel as a candidate material for radioactive waste disposal canisters. The viability of stainless steel is examined under groundwater conditions with variations in pH, bisulfide ions (HS-), and chloride ions (Cl-) concentrations. Utilizing response surface methodology, correlations between corrosion factors and two crucial response variables, passive film breakdown potential and protection potential, are established. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests and advanced analytical techniques provide detailed insights into the material's behavior. This research goes beyond, deriving an equation through response surface methodology that elucidates the relationship between the factors and breakdown potential. HS- weakens the passive film and reduces the pitting corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. However, this study highlights the inhibitory effect of HS- on pitting corrosion when Cl- concentrations are below 0.001 M and at equivalent concentrations of HS-. Under these conditions, immediate re-passivation occurs from the destroyed passive film to metal sulfides such as FeS2, MoS2, and MoS3. As a result, no hysteresis loop occurs in the cyclic polarization curve in these conditions. This research contributes to the understanding of Type 316 stainless-steel corrosion behavior, offering implications for the disposal of radioactive waste in geological repositories.

Developing a simple box-behnken experimental design on the removal of doxorubicin anticancer drug using Fe3O4/graphene nanoribbons adsorbent

This paper aims to develop a Box-Behnken experimental design system to optimize the removal process of doxorubicin anticancer drugs. For this goal, Fe₃O₄/graphene nanoribbons was selected as adsorbent and removal of doxorubicin anticancer drug optimized using Box-Behnken experimental design with a selection of four effective factors. A three-level, four-factor Box-Behnken experimental design was used to assess the relationship between removal percentage as a dependent variable with adsorption weight (0.0015-0.01 mg), pH (3-9), temperature (15-45 °C) and time (1-15 min) as independent variables. Optimized condition by Behnken experimental design (pH = 7.36; time = 15 min; adsorbent weight = 0.01 mg and temperature = 29.26 °C) improved removal of doxorubicin anticancer drug about 99.2% in aqueous solution. The dynamic behavior, adsorption properties and mechanism of doxorubicin molecule on Fe₃O₄/graphene nanoribbon were investigated based on ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and density functional theory calculations with dispersion corrections. A closer inspection of the adsorption configurations and binding energies revealed that π-π interactions were the driving force when the doxorubicin molecule adsorbed on Fe₃O₄/graphene nanoribbon. The observed negative adsorption energy signifies a favourable and exothermic adsorption process of the various adsorbate-substrate systems. Besides, AIMD and phonon dispersion calculations confirm the dynamic stability of Fe₃O₄/graphene nanoribbon.
