Assessment of Chitosan Based Catalyst and their Mode of Action

Optimization of the spontaneous adsorption of food colors from aqueous medium using functionalized Chitosan/Cinnamaldehyde hydrogel

Hydrogels are considered as practical and proficient materials in adsorption and removal of soluble lethal molecules from aqueous system. They are also rapid-decomposable and economical materials besides their diverse preventive claims. In current study, Cinnamaldehyde (C), a natural defensive compound and Chitosan (Ch), natural occurring bio-macromolecule are considered to develop bio-inspired hydrogel (ChC). The structural and surface characteristics of ChC (¹³C solid state NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis and SEM) are investigated to confirm the successful grafting. The origami of gelation in ChC performs an excellent adsorption activity towards food dyes, Carmoisine (CA) and Tartrazine (TA), which are contaminated by the accumulation during excess release from catering and chemical industries in aqueous system. The adsorption performance is thoroughly screened by varying the pH, ChC dosage, dye concentration, contact time and temperature in aqueous system. Thermodynamic and Kinetics study suggest the natural tendency of adsorption with a good reusability up to 3 cycles. The main mechanism for spontaneous adsorption is initiated by capturing of TA/CA in porous surface followed by the ionic interactions and formation of H-bondings. ChC based adsorption is an excellent and potential approach to control the toxicants for the water-pollution and water-preservation.

Progresses in chitin, chitosan, starch, cellulose, pectin, alginate, gelatin and gum based (nano)catalysts for the Heck coupling reactions: A review

Heck cross-coupling reaction (HCR) is one of the few transition metal catalyzed CC bond-forming reactions, which has been considered as the most effective, direct, and atom economical synthetic method using various catalytic systems. Heck reaction is widely employed in numerous syntheses including preparation of pharmaceutical and biologically active compounds, agrochemicals, natural products, fine chemicals, etc. Commonly, Pd-based catalysts have been used in HCR. In recent decades, the application of biopolymers as natural and effective supports has received attention due to their being cost effective, abundance, and non-toxicity. In fact, recent studies demonstrated that biopolymer-based catalysts had high sorption capacities, chelating activities, versatility, and stability, which make them potentially applicable as green materials (supports) in HCR. These catalytic systems present high stability and recyclability after several cycles of reaction. This review aims at providing an overview of the current progresses made towards the application of various polysaccharide and gelatin-supported metal catalysts in HCR in recent years. Natural polymers such as starch, gum, pectin, chitin, chitosan, cellulose, alginate and gelatin have been used as natural supports for metal-based catalysts in HCR. Diverse aspects of the reactions, different methods of preparation and application of polysaccharide and gelatin-based catalysts and their reusability have been reviewed.

Synthesis and Applications of Carbohydrate-Based Organocatalysts

Organocatalysis is a very useful tool for the asymmetric synthesis of biologically or pharmacologically active compounds because it avoids the use of noxious metals, which are difficult to eliminate from the target products. Moreover, in many cases, the organocatalysed reactions can be performed in benign solvents and do not require anhydrous conditions. It is well-known that most of the above-mentioned reactions are promoted by a simple aminoacid, l-proline, or, to a lesser extent, by the more complex cinchona alkaloids. However, during the past three decades, other enantiopure natural compounds, the carbohydrates, have been employed as organocatalysts. In the present exhaustive review, the detailed preparation of all the sugar-based organocatalysts as well as their catalytic properties are described.

A comprehensive survey upon diverse and prolific applications of chitosan-based catalytic systems in one-pot multi-component synthesis of heterocyclic rings

Heterocyclic compounds are among the most prestigious and valuable chemical molecules with diverse and magnificent applications in various sciences. Due to the remarkable and numerous properties of the heterocyclic frameworks, the development of efficient and convenient synthetic methods for the preparation of such outstanding compounds is of great importance. Undoubtedly, catalysis has a conspicuous role in modern chemical synthesis and green chemistry. Therefore, when designing a chemical reaction, choosing and or preparing powerful and environmentally benign simple catalysts or complicated catalytic systems for an acceleration of the chemical reaction is a pivotal part of work for synthetic chemists. Chitosan, as a biocompatible and biodegradable pseudo-natural polysaccharide is one of the excellent choices for the preparation of suitable catalytic systems due to its unique properties. In this review paper, every effort has been made to cover all research articles in the field of one-pot synthesis of heterocyclic frameworks in the presence of chitosan-based catalytic systems, which were published roughly by the first quarter of 2020. It is hoped that this review paper can be a little help to synthetic scientists, methodologists, and catalyst designers, both on the laboratory and industrial scales.

Cross-Linked Chitosan/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Composite as Ecofriendly Biocatalyst for Synthesis of Some Novel Benzil Bis-Thiazoles

Aminohydrazide cross-linked chitosan (CLCS) and its MWCNTs (CLCS/MWCNTs) were formulated and utilized as a potent ecofriendly basic heterogeneous biocatalyst under ultrasonic irradiation for synthesis of two novel series of benzil bis-aryldiazenylthiazoles and benzil bis-arylhydrazonothiazolones from the reaction of benzil bis-thiosemicarbazone with 2-oxo-N′-arylpropanehydrazonoyl chlorides and ethyl 2-chloro-2-(2-phenylhydrazono) acetates, respectively. The chemical structures of the newly synthesized derivatives were elucidated by spectral data and alternative methods, where available. Additionally, their yield % was estimated using a traditional catalyst as TEA and green recyclable catalysts as CLCS and CLCS/MWCNTs composite in a comparative study. We observed that, under the same reaction conditions, the yield % of the desired products increased by changing TEA to CLCS then to CLCS/MWCNT from 72–78% to 79–83% to 84–87%, respectively. The thermal stability of the investigated samples could be arranged as CLCS/MWCNTs composite > CLCS > chitosan, where the weight losses of chitosan, CLCS and CLCS/MWCNTs composite at 500 °C were 65.46%, 57.95% and 53.29%, respectively.

Chitosan as a chiral ligand and organocatalyst: preparation conditions–property–catalytic performance relationships

Properties of chitosan prepared by alkaline deacetylation of chitin under various conditions were correlated with their performance as ligands or organocatalysts in asymmetric catalytic reactions.
