Optimization of biofiltration for odor control: model calibration, validation, and applications

Development of a CFD model indicating the quantitative relationship among reactor dimension, bed flow unevenness, and performance for VOCs biofilters

This study presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based biofiltration model to investigate the airflow distribution and the impact of bed flow unevenness (BFU) on the removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in biofilters. The biofiltration model consists of a gas flow sub-model and a VOCs removal sub-model, which were validated by pilot-scale experiments. The model was used to examine the quantitative relationship among reactor dimensions, including the width to height ratio of the filter bed and empty bed residence time (EBRT), BFU, and performance for VOCs biofilters. Simulation results demonstrate that the flow unevenness index (FUI) of the packing layer changes from 0.06 to 0.48 m2‧s-1 with reactor dimension changes. With an increase in the width to height ratio at a constant EBRT, FUI increases, BFU changes, and flow velocity fluctuation on the cross-section becomes larger, leading to a reduction of about 10% in VOCs removal efficiency. Concentration distribution of VOCs becomes uneven in the horizontal direction. At a constant width to height ratio of the filter bed, an increase in EBRT causes an increase in FUI, leading to a decrease in VOCs removal efficiency. When the width to height ratio is 0.5, velocity fluctuation of filter bed cross-section is small, the concentration of VOCs decreases evenly across the filter bed layer, and FUI is at a low level (0.06-0.11 m2‧s-1).Implication: In this manuscript, a biofiltration model of VOCs biofilter based on CFD has constructed and validated. And the manuscript gave the quantitative relationship among reactor dimension, bed flow unevenness and performance for VOCs biofilters for the first time. This study can lead to enhanced VOCs removal efficiency and improved overall performance of biofilters in practical engineering applications.

Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from Air: Focus on Biotrickling Filtration and Process Modeling

Biotrickling filtration is a well-established technology for the treatment of air polluted with odorous and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Besides dozens of successful industrial applications of this technology, there are still gaps in a full understanding and description of the mechanisms of biotrickling filtration. This review focuses on recent research results on biotrickling filtration of air polluted with single and multiple VOCs, as well as process modeling. The modeling offers optimization of a process design and performance, as well as allows deeper understanding of process mechanisms. An overview of the developments of models describing biotrickling filtration and conventional biofiltration, as primarily developed and in many aspects through similar processes, is presented in this paper.

Research into acetone removal from air by biofiltration using a biofilter with straight structure plates

The biological air treatment method is based on the biological destruction of organic compounds using certain cultures of microorganisms. This method is simple and may be applied in many branches of industry. The main element of biological air treatment devices is a filter charge. Tests were carried out using a new-generation laboratory air purifier with a plate structure. This purifier is called biofilter. The biofilter has a special system for packing material humidification which does not require additional energy inputs. In order to extend the packing material's durability, it was composed of thermally treated birch fibre. Pollutant (acetone) biodegradation occurred on thermally treated wood fibre in this research. According to the performed tests and the received results, the process of biodestruction was highly efficient. When acetone was passed through biofilter's packing material at 0.08 m s-1 rate, the efficiency of the biofiltration process was from 70% up to 90%. The species of bacteria capable of removing acetone vapour from the air, i.e. Bacillus (B. cereus, B. subtilis), Pseudomonas (P. aeruginosa, P. putida), Stapylococcus (S. aureus) and Rhodococcus sp., was identified in this study during the process of biofiltration. Their amount in the biological packing material changed from 1.6 × 107 to 3.7 × 1011 CFU g-1.

Treatment of mixtures of toluene and n-propanol vapours in a compost-woodchip-based biofilter

The present work describes the biofiltration of mixture of n-propanol (as a model hydrophilic volatile organic compound (VOC)) and toluene (as a model hydrophobic VOC) in a biofilter packed with a compost-woodchip mixture. Initially, the biofilter was fed with toluene vapours at loadings up to 175 g m(-3) h(-1) and removal efficiencies of 70%-99% were observed. The biofilter performance when removing mixtures of toluene and n-propanol reached elimination capacities of up to 67g(toluene) m(-3) h(-1) and 85 g(n-propanol) m(-3) h(-1) with removal efficiencies of 70%-100% for toluene and essentially 100% for n-propanol. The presence of high n-propanol loading negatively affected the toluene removal; however, n-propanol removal was not affected by the presence of toluene and was effectively removed in the biofilter despite high toluene loadings. A model for toluene and n-propanol biofiltration could predict the cross-inhibition effect of n-propanol on toluene removal.

Hydrogen sulphide removal from corroding concrete: comparison between surface removal rates and biomass activity

Corrosion of concrete sewer pipes caused by hydrogen sulphide is a problem in many sewer networks. The mechanisms of production and fate of hydrogen sulphide in the sewer biofilms and wastewater as well as its release to the sewer atmosphere are largely understood. In contrast, the mechanisms of the uptake of hydrogen sulphide on the concrete surfaces and subsequent concrete corrosion are basically unknown. To shed light on these mechanisms, the uptake of hydrogen sulphide from a sewer gas phase was compared to the biological hydrogen sulphide removal potential of the concrete corrosion products. The results showed that both microbial degradation at and sorption to the concrete surfaces were important for the uptake of hydrogen sulphide on the concrete surfaces.

Effect of sulfide inhibition and organic shock loading on anaerobic biofilm reactors treating a low-temperature, high-sulfate wastewater

To assess the long-term treatment of sulfate- and carbon-rich wastewater at low temperatures, anaerobic biofilm reactors were operated for over 900 days at 20 degrees C and fed wastewater containing lactate and sulfate. Results showed the reactors could be operated at 20 degrees C with a load rate of 1.3 g-chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L x d or less and a sulfur loading rate (SLR) of 0.2 g-S/L x d, with no significant deterioration in performance. With acclimation periods, load rates of 3.4 g-COD/L x d and SLR of 0.3 g/L x d could be tolerated. Effluent dissolved sulfide and hydrogen sulfide levels were approximately 600 and 150 mg-S/L, respectively, during this period. The effect of organic shock loading was also assessed. Reactors appeared to recover from one, but not two, lactate spikes of approximately 5000 mg-COD/L. Long-term stability was achieved in reactors containing large, stable populations of lactate- and propionate-degrading sulfate-reducing bacteria and aceticlastic methanogens.

Biofiltration of Air: A Review

In this paper we present a review of the existing air pollution control technologies (APCT), when used essentially for the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The biotechnologies referred to, bioscrubbers, biotrickling filters and biofilters, are also described. A more detailed review of biofiltration is proposed, presenting the most recent and latest developments achieved in the field of bioprocessing. In particular, the influence of the filter bed, the polluted air flowrates, the pollutants, the pressure drop, bed moisture content, temperature, nutrients, pH and the microorganisms are reviewed. Models of biofiltration are also presented.

Activated carbon load equalization of gas-phase toluene: effect of cycle length and fraction of time in loading

Fluctuating pollutant concentrations pose challenges in the design and operation of air pollution control devices such as biofilters. Effective load equalization could decrease or eliminate many of these difficulties. In research described here, experiments were conducted to evaluate effects of cycle length and fraction of time contaminants are supplied on the degree of load equalization achieved by passively operated granular activated carbon (GAC) beds. Columns packed with Calgon BPL 4 x 6 mesh GAC were subjected to a variety of cyclic loading conditions in which toluene was supplied at concentrations of 1000 or 250 ppm, during loading intervals, and uncontaminated air flowed through the columns during no-loading intervals. The fraction of time when toluene was supplied ranged from 1/2 to 1/6, and cycle lengths ranged from 6 to 48 h. Results demonstrate that passively operated GAC columns can temporarily accumulate contaminants during intervals of high influent concentration and desorb contaminants during intervals of no loading, resulting in appreciable load equalization without need for external regeneration by heating or other means. Greater load equalization was achieved as the fraction of time toluene was loaded decreased and as the cycle length decreased. A pore and surface diffusion model, able to predict the level of contaminant concentration attenuation in GAC columns with reasonable accuracy, was used to further explore the range of load equalization performance expected from columns of various packed bed depths.

Biological treatment of H(2)S using pellet activated carbon as a carrier of microorganisms in a biofilter

Biological treatment is an emerging technology for treating off-gases from wastewater treatment plants. The most commonly reported odourous compound in off-gases is hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), which has a very low odor threshold. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of using a biological activated carbon as a novel packing material, to achieve a performance-enhanced biofiltration processes in treating H(2)S through an optimum balance and combination of the adsorption capacity with the biodegradation of H(2)S by the bacteria immobilized on the material. The biofilm was mostly developed through culturing the bacteria in the presence of carbon pellets in mineral media. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the biofilm development on carbon surface. Two identical laboratory scale biofilters, one was operated with biological activated carbon (BAC) and another with virgin carbon without bacteria immobilization. Various concentrations of H(2)S (up to 125 ppmv) were used to determine the optimum column performance. A rapid startup (a few days) was observed for H(2)S removal in the biofilter. At a volumetric loading of 1600 m(3)m(-3)h(-1) (at 87 ppmv H(2)S inlet concentration), elimination capacity of the BAC (181 gH(2)Sm(-3)h(-1)) at removal efficiency (RE) of 94% was achieved. If the inlet concentration was kept at below 30 ppmv, high H(2)S removal (over 99%) was achieved at a gas retention time (GRT) as low as 2s, a value, which is shorter than most previously reported for biofilter operations. The bacteria population in the acidic biofilter demonstrated capacity for removal of H(2)S in a broad pH range (pH 1-7). There are experimental evidences showing that the spent BAC could be re-used as packing material in a biofilter based on BAC. Overall, the results indicated that an unprecedented performance could be achieved by using BAC as the supporting media for H(2)S biofiltration.

Activated carbon load equalization of discontinuously generated acetone and toluene mixtures treated by biofiltration

Studies were conducted to evaluate use of granular activated carbon (GAC) as a passively operated load-equalization mechanism for biofilters treating gas streams with dynamically varying (intermittent) pollutant loading. In the initial stage of research, abiotic fixed-bed sorption experiments and numerical modeling were conducted to assess the degree of load-equalization achieved by GAC columns for air flows containing intermittent loading of acetone and toluene present as single-component contaminants and as a mixture. In the subsequent stage of research, an integrated system consisting of a GAC column in series before a biofilter was used to treat a gas stream containing a mixture of acetone and toluene at influent concentrations of 430 ppm(v) and 100 ppm(v) respectively. To simulate loading conditions expected from an industrial process with intermittent operation, contaminated air was supplied 8 h/day and uncontaminated air was supplied 16 h/day. The system was operated with different empty bed contact times, as low as 2.5 s for the GAC column and 14.5 s for the biofilter. Performance of an additional, conventionally operated biofilter (i.e., without GAC load equalization system) was used as a basis of comparison. Data are presented which clearly demonstrate that passively operated GAC load-dampening systems installed in series before biofilters can lead to more uniform loading as a function of time and thereby improve biofilter treatment performance. Results also demonstrate that, because of competitive sorption, the degree of load equalization achieved for different constituents in multi-contaminant gas streams can vary markedly. A pore and surface diffusion model (PSDM) was able to accurately predict the degree of load-dampening achieved by GAC columns for single and multicomponent waste gases.

Biogeochemical analysis of hydrogen sulfide removal by a lava-rock packed biofilter

Although lava-rock-based biofilters have demonstrated their efficiencies for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal found in odorous air emissions, the biogeochemical basis for this removal is unclear. In this study, samples of lava rock and rinse water from biofilters at Cedar Rapids Water Pollution Control Facilities (Iowa) were used to study the structure and chemical composition of lava rock and to identify the predominant microorganism(s) present in lava-rock-based biofilters. It was found that iron, in the form of Fe2+ and Fe3+, was present in lava rock. Although literature suggests that Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans are primarily responsible for gaseous H2S removal in biofilters, our study showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was the dominant microorganism in the lava-rock-based biofilters. A novel mechanism for H2S removal in a lava-rock-based biofilter is proposed based on the biogeochemical analysis of lava rock.

Treatment of H2S using a horizontal biotrickling filter based on biological activated carbon: reactor setup and performance evaluation

Biological treatment is an emerging and prevalent technology for treating off-gases from wastewater treatment plants. The most commonly reported odorous compound in off-gases is hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), which has a very low odor threshold. A self-designed, bench-scale, cross-flow horizontal biotrickling filter (HBF) operated with bacteria immobilized activated carbon (termed biological activated carbon-BAC), was applied for the treatment of H(2)S. A mixed culture of sulfide-oxidizing bacteria dominated by Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans acclimated from activated sludge was used as bacterial seed and the biofilm was developed by culturing the bacteria in the presence of carbon pellets in mineral medium. HBF performance was evaluated systematically over approximately 120 days, depending on a series of changing factors including inlet H(2)S concentration, gas retention time (GRT), pH of recirculation solution, upset and recovery, sulfate accumulation, pressure drop, gas-liquid ratio, and shock loading. The biotrickling filter system can operate at high efficiency from the first day of operation. At a volumetric loading of 900 m(3) m(-3) h(-1) (at 92 ppmv H(2)S inlet concentration), the BAC exhibited maximum elimination capacity (113 g H(2)S/m(-3) h(-1)) and a removal efficiency of 96% was observed. If the inlet concentration was kept at around 20 ppmv, high H(2)S removal (over 98%) was achieved at a GRT of 4 s, a value comparable with those currently reported for biotrickling filters. The bacterial population in the acidic biofilter demonstrated capacity for removal of H(2)S over a broad pH range (pH 1-7). A preliminary investigation into the different effects of bacterial biodegradation and carbon adsorption on system performance was also conducted. This study shows the HBF to be a feasible and economic alternative to physical and chemical treatments for the removal of H(2)S.

Design and performance characterization strategy using modeling for biofiltration control of odorous hydrogen sulfide

Biofilter, dynamic modeling software characterizing contaminant removal via biofiltration, was used in the preliminary design of a biofilter to treat odorous hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Steady-state model simulations were run to generate performance plots for various influent concentrations, loadings, residence times, media sizes, and temperatures. Although elimination capacity and removal efficiency frequently are used to characterize biofilter performance, effluent concentration can be used to characterize performance when treating to a target effluent concentration. Model simulations illustrate that, at a given temperature, a biofilter cannot reduce H2S emissions below a minimum value, no matter how large the biofilter or how long the residence time. However, a higher biofilter temperature results in lower effluent H2S concentrations. Because dynamic model simulations show that shock loading can significantly increase the effluent concentration above values predicted by the steady-state model simulations, it is recommended that, to consistently meet treatment objectives, dynamic feed conditions should be considered. This study illustrates that modeling can serve as a valuable tool in the design and performance optimization of biofilters.

(M)VOC and composting facilities. Part 1: (M)VOC emissions from municipal biowaste and plant refuse

GOAL, SCOPE AND BACKGROUND

Malodorous volatiles derived from the decomposition of biowaste within the process of composting might pose a risk to human health. Different techniques of process engineering have been developed to minimise the burden of malodorous compounds in air possibly affecting compost workers and residents in the vicinity.

METHODS

In the present study, three different composting facilities were examined for the emission of volatiles to estimate the impact of process engineering on the dispersal of odorous compounds and to discuss its relevance for human health.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Concentrations of single compounds belonging to alcohols, ketones, furanes, sulfur-containing compounds and especially terpenes ranged from 10(2) up to nearly 10(6) ng/m3 depending on the sampling sites and the process engineering. The ratio of MVOC and total VOC measured changed throughout the process of biodegradation. A certain combination of volatile compounds coincided with the occurrence of typical compost odour.

CONCLUSION

The type of process engineering seemed to have a major impact on the emission of volatiles, as amounts of (microbial) volatiles emitted were characteristic for the different techniques used. Thus, the MVOC emission basically depends on the degree of biodegradation. It is likely that the concentrations workers are exposed to can have an impact on human health.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND OUTLOOK

It is obvious that less sophisticated types of process engineering give rise to greater amounts of bioaerosols and volatiles and, therefore, technical devices have to be improved and controlled regularly to minimise adverse health effects on workers.
