Fate of micropollutants in struvite production from swine wastewater with sacrificial magnesium anode

Struvite recovery shows significant potential for simultaneously recovering nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from swine wastewater but is challenged by the occurrence and transformation of antibiotic residuals. Electrochemically mediated struvite precipitation with sacrificial magnesium anode (EMSP-Mg) is promising due to its automation and chemical-free merits. However, the fate of antibiotics remains underexplored. We investigated the behavior of sulfadiazine (SD), an antibiotic frequently detected but less studied than others within the EMSP-Mg system. Significantly less SD (≤ 5%) was co-precipitated with recovered struvite in EMSP-Mg than conventional chemical struvite precipitation (CSP) processes (15.0 to 50.0%). The reduced SD accumulation in struvite recovered via EMSP was associated with increased pH and electric potential differences, which likely enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between SD and struvite. In contrast, the typical strategies used in enhancing P removal in the EMSP-Mg system, including increasing the Mg/P ratio or the Mg-release rates, have shown negligible effects on SD adsorption. Furthermore, typical coexisting ions (Ca2+, Cl-, and HCO3-) inhibited SD adsorption onto recovered products. These results provide new insights into the interactions between antibiotics and struvite within the EMSP-Mg system, enhancing our understanding of antibiotic migration pathways and aiding the development of novel EMSP processes for cleaner struvite recovery.

Aging and adsorption behavior of PP-MPs for methylene blue and tetracycline in unitary and binary systems

The omnipresence of microplastics (MPs) around the world has attracted extensive attention in the past decade with more focuses on the interactions of standard MPs without additives in regular shapes and individual pollutant, whereas the actual MPs containing various additives in irregular shapes and complex pollutants are often co-occurrence in the environments. In this paper, the adsorption performance of disposable polypropylene (PP) cups-based MPs subjected to ultraviolet irradiation was investigated in unitary and binary water matrices. The surface characteristics were analyzed and the experimental data of adsorption were fitted by various kinetic and isotherm models, and the results indicated that more cracks and oxygen-containing functional groups with decreased hydrophobicity were produced with aging, and electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding dominated methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC) capture in the individual system. Moreover, pseudo-second order kinetic model better described the adsorption processes. In the binary system, the co-existence of TC promoted MB uptake, while the presence of MB inhibited TC capture. In addition, TC adsorption was enhanced by Ca2+, maybe due to its complexation effect, while the presence of mono- and divalent inorganic salts inhibited MB capture. This research provides useful insights for the fate of PP-MPs and organic pollutants in the complex environments.

Tetracycline adsorption trajectories on aged polystyrene in a simulated aquatic environment: A mechanistic investigation

Microplastics (MPs) have attracted widespread attention as an organic class of pollutants as well as pollutant carriers in recipient aquatic ecosystems. In this study, tetracycline (TC) adsorption by polystyrene (PS), with multiple aging-based temporal changes in the adsorption mechanism, was observed. The results revealed that the pseudo-second-order model accurately predicted the TC adsorption kinetics for different types of PS. In addition, the isothermal adsorption processes fit the Freundlich model; however, their interactions were drastically weakened at lower temperatures or increasing salinities. Corresponding to the electrostatic interactions, adsorption TC was largely pH-dependent, with the maximum adsorbed TC content on the PS surface at a pH of 5 in an aqueous environment. More importantly, mechanistic studies have revealed that, compared to virgin PS, TC complexes with aged PS are principally controlled by hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions, followed by π-π, polar-polar, and van der Waals interactions. These findings will aid in understanding the insights of TC and aged PS interactions and the underlying interactive molecular forces, which will be advantageous for comprehending the real case scenario of inter-pollutant interactions and related environmental pollution.

Comparative study of low-cost fluoride removal by layered double hydroxides, geopolymers, softening pellets and struvite

Excessive F^- in drinking water due to natural and anthropogenic activities is a serious health hazard affecting humans worldwide. In this study, a comparative assessment was made of eight mineral-based materials with advantageous structural properties for F^- uptake: layered-double-hydroxides (LDHs), geopolymers, softening pellets and struvite. These materials are considered low-cost, for being either a waste or by-product, or can be locally-sourced. It can be concluded that Ca-based materials showed the strongest affinity for F^- (Ca-Al-CO₃ LDHs, slag-based geopolymer, softening pellets). The Langmuir adsorption capacity of Ca-Al-CO₃ LDHs, slag-based geopolymer and softening pellets was observed to be 20.83, 5.23 and 1.20 mg/g, respectively. The main mechanism of F^- uptake on Ca-Al-CO₃ LDHs, Mg-Al-Cl LDHs, slag-based geopolymers and softening pellets was found to be sorption at low initial F^- concentrations (<10 mg/L) whereas precipitation as CaF₂ is proposed to play a major role at higher initial F^- concentrations (>20 mg/L). Although the softening pellets had the highest Ca-content (96-97%; XRF), their dense structure and consequent low BET surface area (2-3 m²/g), resulted in poorer performance than the Ca-based LDHs and slag-based geopolymers. Nevertheless, geopolymers, as well as struvite, were not considered to be of interest for application in water treatment, as they would need modification due to their poor stability and/or F^- leaching.

Understanding the Iron-Cobalt Synergies in ZSM-5: Enhanced Peroxymonosulfate Activation and Organic Pollutant Degradation

Iron- and cobalt-based heterogeneous catalysts are widely applied for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic pollutants. However, few studies have unveiled the clear synergistic mechanism of iron and cobalt in ZSM-5. In this paper, the synergistic mechanism of enhanced PMS activation was revealed by constructing iron and cobalt bimetal modified ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts (FeCo-ZSM-5). The tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation experiments showed that the catalytic activity of FeCo-ZSM-5-2:3 was much higher than those of Fe-ZSM-5 and Co-ZSM-5. In addition, the influences of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, reaction temperature, initial pH, and coexisting ions on TCH removal were systematically investigated in this paper. Density functional theory calculations indicated that Co was the main active site for PMS adsorption, and Fe increased the area of Co's positive potential mapped to the electron cloud. The Fe-Co bimetallic doping increased the area of positive potential mapped to the electron cloud and benefited the adsorption of PMS on the catalyst surface, which revealed the synergistic mechanism of bimetals. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and quenching experiments showed that sulfate radicals, singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radicals were involved in the degradation of TCH. Furthermore, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted to propose possible degradation pathways. This work provides certain guiding significance in understanding the synergistic effect of heterogeneous catalysts for tetracycline wastewater treatment.

Facile and Economical Functionalized Hay Biochar with Dairy Effluent for Adsorption of Tetracycline

The present study reports a novel hay biochar functionalized with dairy effluent for enhanced tetracycline (TC) adsorption in the aqueous phase for the first time. The enrichment of hay (i.e., alfalfa) with dairy effluent led to significant accumulation of cationic metals during biochar production. The dairy effluent-functionalized alfalfa biochar (DEAF-BC) possessed strong crystallization (i.e., CaCO3), functional groups (i.e., CO3 2-, C-O stretching), and high surface area (334 m2/g) related to TC adsorption. Therefore, DEAF-BC showed higher TC adsorption capacity (835.7 mg/g) than that of the alfalfa biochar (94.5 mg/g). The adsorption isotherm and kinetic results for the DEAF-BC were correlated with the Freundlich, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models for TC. For the TC adsorption onto DEAF-BC, the thermodynamic analysis implied a spontaneous and endothermic process. Possible mechanisms would include metal complexation, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and π-π interaction.

Physicochemical properties of antibiotics: A review with an emphasis on detection in the aquatic environment

Antibiotics have extensively been applied to rescue a great number of lives through prevention and treatment of contagious diseases and infections. They are either natural or human-made substances, which are broadly employed for promoting the health condition of human, plant, and animal. However, antibiotics are known to exert detrimental impacts on useful and nontarget microbiota of the biological system due to the overuse, continuous discharge into the environment, and subsequently aggregation in various environmental matrices. Physical and chemical properties help to evaluate whether a substance is more likely to concentrate on the terrestrial, aquatic, or atmospheric environmental matrix as well as its fate. Therefore, appropriate characterization and proper understanding of physicochemical attributes of antibiotics are indispensable to protect ecosystem health. In this paper, the antibiotic classifications and their physicochemical properties were reviewed with emphasis on detection in the aqueous environment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Antibiotic compounds were classified in main classes, groups, and their main use. Tetracyclines, sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, macrolides, β-lactams, quinolones, polyether ionophores, and glycopeptides are the most commonly detected antibiotics in the aquatic environment. Physical-chemical properties of the main antimicrobial classes were mentioned. Physicochemical properties can change under different environmental conditions such as pH and temperature.

Bio-Precipitation of Carbonate and Phosphate Minerals Induced by the Bacterium Citrobacter freundii ZW123 in an Anaerobic Environment

In this study, a facultative anaerobic strain isolated from marine sediments and identified as Citrobacter freundii, was used to induce the precipitation of carbonate and phosphate minerals in the laboratory under anaerobic conditions. This is the first time that the ability of C. freundii ZW123 to precipitate carbonate and phosphate minerals has been demonstrated. During the experiments, carbonic anhydrase, alkaline phosphatase and ammonium released by the bacteria not only promoted an increase in pH, but also drove the supersaturation and precipitation of carbonate and phosphate minerals. The predominant bio-mediated minerals precipitated at various Mg/Ca molar ratios were calcite, vaterite, Mg-rich calcite, monohydrocalcite and struvite. A preferred orientation towards struvite was observed. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and elemental mapping showed the distribution of magnesium and calcium elements within Mg-rich calcite. Many organic functional groups, including C=O, C–O–C and C–O, were detected within the biominerals, and these functional groups were also identified in the associated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Fifteen kinds of amino acid were detected in the biotic minerals, almost identical to those of the EPS, indicating a close relationship between EPS and biominerals. Most amino acids are negatively charged and able to adsorb cations, providing an oversaturated microenvironment to facilitate mineral nucleation. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectrum of struvite shows the presence of organic functional groups on the mineral surface, suggesting a role of the microorganism in struvite precipitation. The ZW123 bacteria provided carbon and nitrogen for the formation of the biotic minerals through their metabolism, which further emphasizes the close relationship between biominerals and the microorganisms. Thermal studies showed the enhanced thermal stability of biotic minerals, perhaps due to the participation of the bacteria ZW123. The presence of amino acids such as Asp and Glu may explain the high magnesium content of some calcites. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the morphological change and preferred orientation were likely caused by selective adsorption of EPS onto the various struvite crystal surfaces. Thus, this study shows the significant role played by C. freundii ZW123 in the bioprecipitation of carbonate and phosphate minerals and provides some insights into the processes involved.

Evaluating Microbial and Chemical Hazards in Commercial Struvite Recovered from Wastewater

Controlled struvite (NH₄MgPO₄·6H₂O) precipitation has become a well-known process for nutrient recovery from wastewater treatment systems to alleviate the pressures of diminishing, finite rock phosphate reservoirs. Nonetheless, coprecipitation of potential microbial and chemical hazards is poorly understood. On the other hand, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health concern and wastewater is thought to disseminate resistance genes within bacteria. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) are typically used as measures of treatment quality, and with multiresistant E. coli and Enterococcus spp. rising in concern, the quantification of FIB can be used as a preliminary method to assess the risk of AMR. Focusing on struvite produced from full-scale operations, culture and qPCR methods were utilized to identify FIB, antibiotic resistance genes, and human enteric viruses in the final product. Detection of these hazards occurred in both wet and dry struvite samples indicating that there is a potential risk that needs further consideration. Chemical and biological analyses support the idea that the presence of other wastewater components can impact struvite formation through ion and microbial interference. While heavy metal concentrations met current fertilizer standards, the presence of K, Na, Ca, and Fe ions can impact struvite purity yet provide benefit for agricultural uses. Additionally, the quantified hazards detected varied among struvite samples produced from different methods and sources, thus indicating that production methods could be a large factor in the risk associated with wastewater-recovered struvite. In all, coprecipitation of metals, fecal indicator bacteria, antimicrobial resistance genes, and human enteric viruses with struvite was shown to be likely, and future engineered wastewater systems producing struvite may require additional step(s) to manage these newly identified public health risks.

Occurrence and distribution of the environmental pollutant antibiotics in Gaoqiao mangrove area, China

Occurrence and distribution of 15 antibiotics belonging to families of sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines and chloramphenicols were investigated in water and sediment in Gaoqiao mangrove area, China, using LC-MS-MS. The influence of tidal level and mangrove vegetation on antibiotic residues were examined. The levels of antibiotics were found to be ranged from 0.15 to 198 ng L(-1) in water and from 0.08 to 849 μg kg(-1) in sediment. No significant difference in concentrations of 15 different antibiotics from water and sediment samples was observed among the high, middle and low intertidal channel. The residues of SMZ, SMTZ, OFL, NOR, ENR, OXY and FLO were significantly higher in Aegiceras corniculatum assemblage than in Avicennia marina assemblage. Although no significant difference in tested antibiotics was found between the surface and bottom sediment, mangrove vegetation can to some extent reduce the accumulation for SMZ, SMTZ, OFL, NOR, CIP, OXY and TET in sediments relative to corresponding bare mudflats, implying that the environmental pollution from antibiotics may be mitigated by mangrove vegetation. Principal components analysis revealed that the terrestrial input and different habitats directly influenced the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics.

Tetracycline removal from water by adsorption/bioadsorption on activated carbons and sludge-derived adsorbents

The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of activated carbons with different chemical and textural natures in the adsorption of three tetracyclines (TCs) (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline). We also assessed the influence of the solution pH and ionic strength on the adsorption of these compounds and studied their removal by the combined use of microorganisms and activated carbon (bioadsorption). Sludge-derived materials were also used to remove TC from water. The capacity of these materials to adsorb TC was very high and was much greater than that of commercial activated carbon. This elevated adsorption capacity (512.1-672.0 mg/g) is explained by the high tendency of TC to form complex ions with some of the metal ions present in these materials. The medium pH and presence of electrolytes considerably affected TCs adsorption on commercial activated carbon. These results indicate that electrostatic adsorbent-adsorbate interactions play an important role in TC adsorption processes when conducted at pH values that produce TC deprotonation. The presence of bacteria during the TCs adsorption process decreases their adsorption/bioadsorption on the commercial activated carbon, weakening interactions between the adsorbate and the microfilm formed on the carbon surface. The adsorptive capacity was considerably lower in dynamic versus static regime, attributable to problems of TC diffusion into carbon pores and the shorter contact time between adsorbate and adsorbent.

Antibiotics in the aquatic environment--a review--part I

Although antibiotics have been used in large quantities for some decades, until recently the existence of these substances in the environment has received little notice. It is only in recent years that a more complex investigation of antibiotic substances has been undertaken in order to permit an assessment of the environmental risks they may pose. Within the last decade an increasing number of studies covering antibiotic input, occurrence, fate and effects have been published, but there is still a lack of understanding and knowledge about antibiotics in the aquatic environment despite the numerous studies performed. This review addresses the present state of knowledge concerning the input, occurrence, fate and effects of antibiotics in the environment. It brings up important questions that are still open, and addresses some significant issues which must be tackled in the future for a better understanding of the behavior of antibiotics in the environment, as well as the risks associated with their occurrence. Questions related to resistance in the environment that may be caused by antibiotics will be addressed in the second part.
