Measuring satisfaction with dental education among dentists and dental students in Croatia: A cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION

The study aimed to determine satisfaction level with the quality of education among dental students and dentists in Croatia based on the acquired knowledge and clinical and soft skills.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 533 dentists and dental students. The questionnaire consisted of four sections with closed-ended questions. The first section included personal and professional data, whereas the second to fourth sections assessed satisfaction with learned basic dental, professional technical or clinal and interpersonal social or soft skills on a 5-point Likert scale. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U-test and linear regression analysis. The significance level was set at .05.

RESULTS

When comparing satisfaction scores between dentists and dental students in terms of basic dental knowledge and skills learned, students showed higher satisfaction scores for the categories of "Emergency Medical Situations" (p = .005) and "Ergonomic Principles of Work" (p = .004). Dentists, on the other hand, showed higher satisfaction for the categories "Selection and use of local anaesthetics and local antibiotics" (p = .005, p = .026; respectively). For the type of technical skills from the different areas of dentistry, dentists were most satisfied with "Oral Surgery" (4.26 ± 0.85), while students were most satisfied with "Oral Medicine" (4.29 ± 0.89). Finally, when comparing satisfaction scores with social skills, dentists had lower satisfaction scores in all categories studied (p ≤ .05).

CONCLUSION

Dental students showed higher overall satisfaction than dentists. The most significant satisfaction was expressed in technical skills learned, and the most considerable dissatisfaction was recorded in the unmeasurable skills category focused on "Career management".

Active learning in undergraduate classroom dental education- a scoping review

INTRODUCTION

Previous reviews on active learning in dental education have not comprehensibly summarized the research activity on this topic as they have largely focused on specific active learning strategies. This scoping review aimed to map the breadth and depth of the research activity on active learning strategies in undergraduate classroom dental education.

METHODS

The review was guided by Arksey & O'Malley's multi-step framework and followed the PRISMA Extension Scoping Reviews guidelines. MEDLINE, ERIC, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were searched from January 2005 to October 2022. Peer-reviewed, primary research articles published in English were selected. Reference lists of relevant studies were verified to improve the search. Two trained researchers independently screened titles, abstracts, and full-texts articles for eligibility and extracted the relevant data.

RESULTS

In total, 93 studies were included in the review. All studies performed outcome evaluations, including reaction evaluation alone (n = 32; 34.4%), learning evaluation alone (n = 19; 20.4%), and reaction and learning evaluations combined (n = 42; 45.1%). Most studies used quantitative approaches (n = 85; 91.3%), performed post-intervention evaluations (n = 70; 75.3%), and measured student satisfaction (n = 73; 78.5%) and knowledge acquisition (n = 61; 65.6%) using direct and indirect (self-report) measures. Only 4 studies (4.3%) reported faculty data in addition to student data. Flipped learning, group discussion, problem-based learning, and team-based learning were the active learning strategies most frequently evaluated (≥6 studies). Overall, most studies found that active learning improved satisfaction and knowledge acquisition and was superior to traditional lectures based on direct and indirect outcome measures.

CONCLUSION

Active learning has the potential to enhance student learning in undergraduate classroom dental education; however, robust process and outcome evaluation designs are needed to demonstrate its effectiveness in this educational context. Further research is warranted to evaluate the impact of active learning strategies on skill development and behavioral change in order to support the competency-based approach in dental education.

Optimizing teaching effectiveness in dental education for a new generation of learners

PURPOSE

Today's dental students, Generation Z (Gen Z), are said to learn differently than those of previous generations. As generations of dental students vary, our teaching styles must keep up with unique and changing groups of individuals.

METHODS

This article discusses learner-focused teaching methods including techniques that address the characteristics of Gen Z learners. Blended learning methods that combine online media with traditional face-to-face sessions, team-based learning, and a flipped classroom format have previously been suggested as ways to increase learning effectiveness and student satisfaction.

RESULTS

In this paper, the characteristics and preferences of Gen Z students are described along with the challenges they create with conventional teaching methods. An implementation strategy using principles from organizational agility and Bolman and Deal's Four Frames Model is proposed for dental schools to transition to a more learner-centered teaching approach.

CONCLUSIONS

The suggested strategy can be customized and could be useful to schools that wish to enhance their teaching methods to meet the learning needs of Gen Z dental students and beyond.

The utility of a gross dissection anatomical model for simulation-based learning in pathology

INTRODUCTION

The examination of morphological alterations in tissues is fundamental in Pathology. Traditional training in gross dissection has several limitations, including the risk of transmissible diseases, formaldehyde exposure and limited specimen availability. We describe a teaching method using anatomical simulators.

METHODS

Liquid silicone-based artisan neoplastic anatomical models were used in conjunction with clinical scenarios. Eighty-five medical students participated in a gross dissection experience and were asked to complete a feedback questionnaire. Additionally, a workshop was organized for students to compare three different teaching methods. The first one used still images (Group1-G1), the second a video explanation (Group2-G2), and the third directly observed a pathologist while grossing (Group3-G3).

RESULTS

The knowledge acquisition questionnaire showed an average value of 4.4 out of 5 (1-5) (range 3.4-4.7, σ0.89). The categories 'knowledge of resection margins' and 'macroscopic diagnosis' received the highest values (4.8, σ0.11 and 4.7, σ0.32, respectively), followed by 'understanding of handling and gross examination of the surgical specimen' (4.5, σ0.49), 'prognosis' (4.3, σ0.67) and 'understanding of a tumor resection' (3.9, σ0.96) (p<0.05). Regarding teaching methods, G3 spent less time than G2 and G1 with mean times of 15'39″ (σ2'12″), 16'50″ (σ3'45″), and 17'52″ (σ2'12″), respectively (p<0.05). Gross dissection marks (0-5) showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05). G2 obtained better results (3.7;σ0.54) than G3 (3.4;σ0.94) or G1 (3.1;σ0.8).

CONCLUSIONS

This preliminary study demonstrates that it is possible to implement a gross dissection simulation module at medical school and thus enable the acquisition of skills in a secure environment.

Flipped Classroom Experiences in Clinical Dentistry – A Strategic Mini-Review

Background:

Pedagogy in dental education has evolved over the decades. Today, many alternative modes of content delivery are being used as an adjunct to the traditional classroom. A flipped classroom is one among those that are being explored for teaching clinical dentistry.

Objective:

This mini-review is aimed at evaluating the available evidence in the efficacy of flipped classrooms and its related aspects in the learning curve of clinical dentistry.

Methods:

A thorough literature search on electronic databases for all the studies focusing on the following evidence-based question: “Is Flipped classroom in clinical dentistry a useful mode of pedagogy delivery? was performed. A combination of MeSH terms using Boolean operators “AND,” “OR:” FLIPPED [All Fields] AND (“dental health services” [MeSH Terms] AND “health” [All Fields] AND “services” [All Fields]) OR “dental” [All Fields]) AND (“learning” [MeSH Terms] OR “learning” [All Fields]). Specific terms such as “Perio” OR “Prostho” OR “Restorative” OR “Ortho” OR “Oral medicine” OR “Maxillofacial surgery” OR “Pediatric” OR “endo” was also used. Data from these articles addressing the aim of this study was extracted.

Results:

A total of 16 articles were considered for the review. The majority of the studies considered flipped classroom as a successful model of pedagogy. The most common mode of outside classroom activity was pre-recorded videos. In-classroom activities, a combination of seminars, interactive discussions, and quiz were explored. Time constraints, lack of faculty development programs are considered to be negative factors for the success of the flipped classroom.

Conclusion:

Within the limitation of the study, flipped classroom can be adapted as a method of pedagogy in clinical dentistry.

Perception and outcomes after implementation of problem-based learning in predoctoral pediatric dentistry clinical education

PURPOSE

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been a useful addition to health-based curricula by supporting learning with contributory discussion, research, and critical analysis of evidence in a peer-supported learning format. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of PBL on pediatric dentistry clinical education.

METHODS

First-time pass-rates in clinical and objective structured clinical examinations were measured in student cohorts receiving pediatric curricular formats with (PBL+) or without a PBL (PBL-) experience. Student perceived learning outcomes were measured through a voluntary survey. The numbers of each competency attempt were compared between the study groups (PBL+ or PBL-) using Wilcoxon Rank-Sum tests or Fisher's exact tests. Mantel-Hanzel ordinal chi-square tested for differences in rates of agreement on survey responses from students in the PBL+ or PBL- groups. Significance was set at 0.05.

RESULTS

There was a significant improvement in the first-time pass-rates in five of seven competencies in the PBL+ group. A significantly higher proportion of students in the PBL+ group perceived that their predoctoral pediatric dentistry rotation improved their diagnostic skills compared to the students in the PBL- group (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the perceptions on satisfaction of clinical or non-clinical staff support, perceived self-improvement in radiographic or clinical skills or overall benefits of the predoctoral pediatric dentistry rotation.

CONCLUSION

The addition of a PBL component to a traditional curricular format in a pediatric dentistry clinical rotation had a positive impact on learning in a predoctoral dental program.

A comparison of video-based and slide-based teaching before hands-on rubber dam application: A quantitative and qualitative study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES

Instructional videos may demonstrate the execution of complex clinical procedures and the cooperation between members of the dental team better than traditional slide-based teaching materials. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of a procedural video on student ratings to a traditional still-image-based presentation in a course on rubber dam application.

METHODS

In a randomized, double-blind, parallel arm design, participants (46 dental students) completed a seven-item, five-step Likert-scale questionnaire at baseline (t1), after a video-based or slide-based demonstration of rubber dam application (t2) and after hands-on training (t3). The students' judgement on the benefits of rubber dam (items 1-3), their motivation to use rubber dam (item 4), their self-efficacy (items 5-6) and their expected use of the teaching material (item 7) were assessed. Changes in the students' individual answers were analyzed for each item and comparison between intervention groups made. Moreover, the impact of the teaching format on in-class discussions was analyzed qualitatively using a thematic approach RESULTS: Both interventions arose comparable significant improvement in the students' Likert-scale ratings from t1 to t2, and again from t2 to t3. No significant differences between intervention groups were found in the students' ratings or in the qualitative analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

Procedural videos have proven to be a valuable learning aid in a variety of teaching formats, but in the context of a live lecture, they may not constitute an improvement over traditional text- and still-image-based presentations.

Improving effectiveness of dental students' feedback and course evaluation

Dental students providing feedback about a course they take, in a timely manner, benefits not only teachers, but also indirectly the students themselves, especially if given with confidence in a constructive manner. Therefore, the aim of this study was to train students on how to give feedback, to ask them to provide feedback before and after the instructions were given, and analyze the change in their responses. Participants were students who attended the second-year preclinical course in prosthodontics. They were asked to provide feedback anonymously with online surveys after completing modules of the course during the academic year. There was no intervention prior to the first feedback; however, before providing the second feedback, students were asked to read a 1-page handout related to feedback modalities. Following this, an interactive workshop in feedback was provided prior to the third survey. The received responses were ranked as either: neutral, positive, negative, or constructive and were analyzed using a mixed repeated measures test with Bonferroni correction at a 0.05 significance level. The results showed a higher number of constructive and positive responses than both neutral and negative feedback (P ≤ 0.05) within the same surveys, but no interaction effect was found between the surveys (P = 0.076). Our data showed an increase in constructive feedback provided by students after the 2 different training methods, but the modality of delivery did not seem to significantly influence the results. In summary, training students on how to provide constructive feedback may be beneficial for teachers to improve their courses.

Flipped classroom in dental education: A scoping review

INTRODUCTION

There is a pressing need to explore strategies which adopt and incorporate contemporary teaching methods to keep abreast with technological advances. Flipped classroom is a type of blended learning approach that has received considerable attention as an alternative to traditional lectures. The purpose of this scoping review is to explore the characteristics of the flipped classroom model implemented in undergraduate dental education.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The scoping review has been reported under the PRISMA extension for scoping review guidelines. Systematic search of databases culminated in full-text papers that were evaluated for quality.

RESULTS

A systematic search on flipped classroom in dental education identified a total of 30 papers for full-text evaluation. After further exclusion, 17 studies were selected for data charting.

DISCUSSION

The student satisfaction, learning resources, pre-class and/or in-class activities, and academic scores are analysed and discussed.

CONCLUSION

Flipped classroom improves student satisfaction in majority of the studies, whilst its effect on academic scores, particularly for skill development, needs more research.
