Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the impact of artificial aging on the fracture toughness and hardness of three-dimensional (3D)-printed and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milled 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty bar-shaped specimens (45 × 4 × 3 mm) were prepared using two manufacturing technologies: 3D printing (LithaCon 3Y 210, Lithoz GmbH, Vienna, Austria; n = 20) and milling (Initial Zirconia ST, GC, Japan; n = 20) of 3Y-TZP. The chevron-notch beam method was used to assess the fracture toughness according to ISO 24370. Specimens from each 3Y-TZP group were divided into two subgroups (n = 10) based on the artificial aging process (autoclaving): nonaged and aged. Nonaged specimens were stored at room temperature, while aged specimens underwent autoclave aging at 134°C under 2 bar-pressure for 5 h. Subsequently, the specimens were immersed in absolute 99% ethanol using an ultrasonic cleaner for 5 min. Each specimen was preloaded by subjecting it to a 4-point loading test, with a force of up to 200 N applied for three cycles. Further 4-point loading was conducted at a rate of 0.5 mm/min under controlled temperature and humidity conditions until fracture occurred. The maximum force (Fmax) was recorded and the chevron notch was examined at 30 × magnification under an optical microscope for measurements before the fracture toughness (KIc) was calculated. Microhardness testing was also performed to measure the Vickers hardness number (VHN). A scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray unit (EDX) was used to examine surface topography and chemical composition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was conducted to identify crystalline structure. Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Student's t-test with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS The nonaged 3D-printed 3Y-TZP group exhibited a significantly higher fracture toughness value (6.07 MPa m1/2) than the milled 3Y-TZP groups (p < 0.001). After autoclave aging, the 3D-printed 3Y-TZP group maintained significantly higher fracture toughness (p < 0.001) compared to the milled 3Y-TZP group. However, no significant differences in hardness values (p = 0.096) were observed between the aged and nonaged groups within each manufacturing process (3D-printed and milled) independently. CONCLUSION The findings revealed that the new 3D-printed 3Y-TZP produced by the lithography-based ceramic manufacturing (LCM) technology exhibited superior fracture toughness after autoclave aging compared to the milled 3Y-TZP. While no significant differences in hardness were observed between the aged groups, the 3D-printed material demonstrated greater resistance to fracture, indicating enhanced mechanical stability.

Abstract
PURPOSE This review aims to summarize the available technologies, material categories, and prosthodontic applications of additive manufacturing (AM) dental ceramics, evaluate the achievable accuracy and mechanical properties in comparison with current mainstream computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) subtractive manufacturing (SM) methods, and discuss future prospects and directions. STUDY SELECTION This paper is based on the latest reviews, state-of-the-art research, and existing ISO standards on AM technologies and prosthodontic applications of dental ceramics. PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were amongst the sources searched for narrative reviews. RESULTS Relatively few AM technologies are available and their applications are limited to crowns and fixed partial dentures. Although the accuracy and strength of AM dental ceramics are comparable to those of SM, they have the limitations of relatively inferior curved surface accuracy and low strength reliability. Furthermore, functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM), a potential direction for AM, enables the realization of biomimetic structures, such as natural teeth; however, specific studies are currently lacking. CONCLUSIONS AM dental ceramics are not sufficiently developed for large-scale clinical applications. However, with additional research, it may be possible for AM to replace SM as the mainstream manufacturing technology for ceramic restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of surface polishing and printing layer orientation on the fatigue behaviour of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP) by stereolithography (SLA) in comparison with subtractive manufacturing. MATERIALS AND METHODS 60 experimental zirconia bar-shaped specimens were 3D-printed (P) via SLA, and 30 specimens were milled (M) from commercial zirconia block (Lava™ Frame, 3 M ESPE AG). All specimens had the same dimensions (1 mm × 1 mm x 12 mm) after sintering. The 3D-printed specimens were randomly divided according to printing orientations: parallel or perpendicular to the tensile surface in the fatigue test. The specimens were subsequently submitted to two surface finishing protocols (n = 15/gr): unpolished or polished. Their phase compositions were analysed by X-ray diffraction. The fatigue behaviour was evaluated by a stepwise approach. RESULTS The milled and both 3D-printed groups showed similar phase compositions for the as-sintered condition. Considerable amounts of rhombohedral phase were detected after polishing. Milled unpolished samples presented significantly higher fatigue strength than 3D-printed unpolished samples. Polishing did not improve the fatigue strength for milled zirconia but was advantageous for the 3D-printed specimens. 3D-printed specimens with parallel printing-layer orientation were significantly stronger than specimens with perpendicular layers regardless of surface finishing. CONCLUSION The manufacturing techniques had a significant influence on the fatigue strength of 3Y-TZP, but not on the phase compositions of the surface. The polishing protocol showed different effects on 3Y-TZP fatigue strength and induced phase transition of the 3Y-TZP from Tetragonal to Rhombohedral. The best fatigue strength was achieved through milling using an unpolished surface and SLA-printed layers that were parallel to the tensile surface, followed by polishing.

Abstract
In view of its high mechanical performance, outstanding aesthetic qualities, and biological stability, zirconia has been widely used in the fields of dentistry. Due to its potential to produce suitable advanced configurations and structures for a number of medical applications, especially personalized created devices, ceramic additive manufacturing (AM) has been attracting a great deal of attention in recent years. AM zirconia hews out infinite possibilities that are otherwise barely possible with traditional processes thanks to its freedom and efficiency. In the review, AM zirconia's physical and adhesive characteristics, accuracy, biocompatibility, as well as their clinical applications have been reviewed. Here, we highlight the accuracy and biocompatibility of 3D printed zirconia. Also, current obstacles and a forecast of AM zirconia for its development and improvement have been covered. In summary, this review offers a description of the basic characteristics of AM zirconia materials intended for oral medicine. Furthermore, it provides a generally novel and fundamental basis for the utilization of 3D printed zirconia in dentistry.

Abstract
Zirconia materials have been increasingly used in implant rehabilitation due to their excellent physical and esthetic properties. Stable peri-implant epithelial tissue adhesion to the transmucosal implant abutment may significantly enhance the efficacy of implant long-term stability. However, it is difficult to form stable chemical or biological bindings with peri-implant epithelial tissue due to the strong biological inertia of zirconia materials. In the present study, we investigated whether calcium hydrothermal treatment of zirconia promotes sealing of peri-implant epithelial tissue. In vitro experiments were performed to analyze the effects of calcium hydrothermal treatment on zirconia surface morphology and composition by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Immunofluorescence staining of adherent proteins, namely, F-actin and integrin β1, in human gingival fibroblast line (HGF-l) cells was performed. In the calcium hydrothermal treatment group, there was higher expression of these adherent proteins and increased HGF-l cell proliferation. An in vivo study was conducted by extracting the maxillary right first molars of rats and replacing them with mini-zirconia abutment implants. The calcium hydrothermal treatment group showed better attachment at the zirconia abutment surface, which inhibited horseradish peroxidase penetration at 2 weeks post-implantation. These results demonstrated that calcium hydrothermal treatment of zirconia improves the seal between the implant abutment and surrounding epithelial tissues, potentially increasing the long-term stability of the implant.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigates the mechanical and surface properties of zirconia manufactured using additive manufacturing (AM) technology and the effect of the building direction on the mechanical and surface properties. METHODS Specimens were prepared using ZrO2 paste (3DMix ZrO2; 3DCeram) and a three-dimensional printing system (CeraMaker 900; 3DCeram) based on the principles of stereolithography (SLA). The mechanical properties (flexural strength, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio) and surface properties (chemical composition and surface observation) were evaluated for three building directions (parallel, diagonal, and perpendicular) to investigate the relationship between the building directions and the anisotropy of the mechanical and surface properties of SLA-manufactured zirconia. Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honestly significant difference test. RESULTS The highest flexural strength was obtained for a perpendicular building direction. The flexural strength was significantly higher in the perpendicular direction than in the parallel and diagonal directions; it was also significantly higher in the diagonal direction than in the parallel direction (P<0.05). The Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and chemical composition did not differ significantly. Microstructural observations revealed that the layers, large crystals, and pores were more prominent in the parallel direction. CONCLUSIONS The flexural strength and surface structure of the tested SLA-manufactured zirconia were influenced by the building direction; however, other mechanical properties remained unaffected. The layer boundaries affected the anisotropic behavior of the builds to a certain extent, owing to the layer-by-layer production method.

Abstract
Glass-fibre-reinforced polyetherketoneketone (PEKK-GF) shows great potential for application as a dental implant restoration material; however, its surface bioinertness and poor antibacterial properties limit its integration with peri-implant soft tissue, which is critical in the long-term success of implant restoration. Herein, functional magnesium (Mg) and silver (Ag) ions were introduced into PEKK-GF by plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). Surface characterization confirmed that the surface morphology of PEKK-GF was not visibly affected by PIII treatment. Further tests revealed that PIII changed the wettability and electrochemical environment of the PEKK-GF surface and enabled the release of Mg2+ and Ag+ modulated by Giavanni effect. In vitro experiments showed that Mg/Ag PIII-treated PEKK-GF promoted the proliferation and adhesion of human gingival fibroblasts and upregulated the expression of adhesion-related genes and proteins. In addition, the treated samples inhibited the metabolic viability and adhesion of Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis on their surfaces, distorting bacterial morphology. Mg/Ag PIII surface treatment improved the soft tissue integration and antibacterial activities of PEKK-GF, which will further support and broaden its adoption in dentistry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of surface finishing and printing layer orientation on the surface roughness and flexural strength of three-dimensionally (3D) printed 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia manufactured by stereolithography (SLA). METHODS Ninety bar-shaped zirconia specimens (1 mm x 1 mm x 12 mm) were 3D-printed via SLA. After debinding and sintering, they were randomly divided according to the printing layer orientation: parallel (PR) or perpendicular (PD) to the tensile surface for bending test. Each group was submitted to a surface finishing protocol (n=15/group): unpolished (subgroup 0), with polished tensile surface (subgroup 1), and with polished lateral and tensile surfaces (subgroup 3). Roughness of tensile surface was determined using a contact sensor and surface morphology was analyzed under Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Flexural strength, apparent elastic modulus, and Weibull parameters were assessed using a 3-point bending test. Fractured specimens were examined to identify failure origins. Finite element analysis was used to evaluate tensile stress peaks and failure risk. RESULTS PR orientation exhibited higher strength, higher apparent elastic modulus, higher maximum principal stress peaks, and lower failure risk. For both layer orientations, groups with polished lateral and tensile sides (PR3 and PD3) were the strongest. SEM revealed that polishing led to changes in defect type, location, and size. SIGNIFICANCE SLA zirconia shows different mechanical properties according to surface roughness and defects. Orienting the printed layers parallel to the tensile side improves its mechanical performance. Polishing can significantly improve its flexural strength. It is necessary to reduce the final product's surface roughness and large pores for its best performance.

Abstract
Zirconia-based materials are widely used in dentistry due to their biocompatibility and suitable mechanical and tribological behavior. Although commonly processed by subtractive manufacturing (SM), alternative techniques are being explored to reduce material waste, energy consumption and production time. 3D printing has received increasing interest for this purpose. This systematic review intends to gather information on the state of the art of additive manufacturing (AM) of zirconia-based materials for dental applications. As far as the authors know, this is the first time that a comparative analysis of these materials' properties has been performed. It was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases to select studies that met the defined criteria without restrictions on publication year. Stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) were the techniques most focused on in the literature and the ones that led to most promising outcomes. However, other techniques, such as robocasting (RC) and material jetting (MJ), have also led to good results. In all cases, the main concerns are centered on dimensional accuracy, resolution, and insufficient mechanical strength of the pieces. Despite the struggles inherent to the different 3D printing techniques, the commitment to adapt materials, procedures and workflows to these digital technologies is remarkable. Overall, the research on this topic can be seen as a disruptive technological progress with a wide range of application possibilities.
