Abstract
Periodontal diseases have been reported to be lifestyle-related and associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). The introduction of dental checkups in a health checkup program may create a synergistic effect and aid the prevention of MetS. In Japan, a chewing function questionnaire has now been introduced into the national health checkup program. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the questionnaire reflects dental and oral conditions and whether it helps improve general and oral health. A total of 6599 subjects who underwent health checkups or guidance specified by the National Health Insurance of Japan for two consecutive years were included. A single comprehensive question to evaluate masticatory function was asked. Medical and dental examinations and insurance data were collected and used for analysis. In terms of masticatory function during chewing, 82.3% of subjects experienced no problems, 17.3% experienced some difficulty, and 0.4% experienced severe problems. There was a significant relationship between the questionnaire response and dental examinations results for several items of examination. The overall dental consultation rate after health screening was 42.3%. Improvement in periodontal disease was achieved in those who reported some problems with chewing function. Improvement in blood pressure was also observed in those who reported some problem with chewing function and subsequently had a dental consultation. The results of this study indicate that questionnaires on masticatory function reflect the status of dental and oral health. In addition, the results suggested that questionnaire results are potentially linked to improvement in dental and oral health status, and improvement in MetS.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop the Food Acceptance Questionnaire (FAQ) to assess the masticatory ability of Thai older adults (≥60 years). Fifty participants were interviewed using open-ended questions about food they regularly consumed and avoided due to difficulty chewing. From a list of 140 items, 100 were recruited for a trial version of the FAQ. A total of 154 participants responded to the 5-point Likert scale on their chewing perception of each food item (1, impossible to chew; 5, most easily eaten). The average response of each food item was used as the chewing index (CI). The 100 food items were ranked and divided into five grades based on their CIs. Masticatory performance (MP) was objectively assessed by a visual scoring method using gummy jelly (UHA Mikakuto). Two foods from each grade that demonstrated the highest correlation with MP were selected to form the final 10-item FAQ. The FAQ score was calculated by summarizing the responses of 10 items. MP correlated strongly with the FAQ score (r = 0.57, p < 0.001), indicating its predictive validity. Furthermore, the FAQ indicates strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.90), indicating high reliability. In conclusion, this newly developed 10-item FAQ is valid and reliable for assessing the masticatory ability of Thai older adults.

Abstract
Background: Older adults who have undergone surgery for oral tumors are at increased risk of impaired masticatory rhythm. This study investigated the correlations between masticatory rhythm, objective masticatory performance, and subjective masticatory performance as well as factors related to masticatory rhythm. Methods: The participants were 44 adults (24 men, 20 women; age range 42~90 years old) who had undergone maxillectomy, mandibulectomy, or glossectomy and were rehabilitated with a maxillofacial prosthesis. The number of functional contact teeth pairs was confirmed by intraoral examination. Chewing rate, cycle duration, coefficient of variation (CV) for cycle duration (reflecting the stability of masticatory rhythm), and mixing ability were measured simultaneously using a mastication movement rhythm tracking device during gum chewing. Maximum occlusal force was measured using the dental prescale system. Patients' perception of chewing ability was rated using a questionnaire. Results: The Spearman's rank correlation test revealed that mixing ability, patient-rated masticatory scores, cycle duration, CV for cycle duration, and maximum occlusal force showed significant correlations with chewing rate. Multiple linear regression analysis identified mixing ability and the CV for cycle duration as significant predictors of masticatory rhythm. Conclusions: Factors associated with a faster chewing rate were higher mixing ability and masticatory scores, greater maximum occlusal force, shorter cycle duration, and smaller CV for cycle duration. Stable masticatory rhythm and mixing ability are significant predictors of chewing rate. Poor masticatory performance and unstable masticatory rhythm can result in slower chewing and thus a higher risk of inadequate dietary intake.

Abstract
This study aimed to clarify the usefulness of masticatory score by occlusal support. A total of 605 adults were classified into four groups (A1, A2A3, B, and C) according to the Eichner classification, and the relationship between the amount of glucose eluted and masticatory score was investigated in each group. A significant correlation between the glucose eluted and masticatory score was observed in groups A2A3, B, and C, but not in A1, suggesting that the masticatory score is useful for evaluating the masticatory performance of complete denture wearers, but not adults with natural dentition.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to examine the association of self-rated chewing function, the number of teeth and periodontal status with metabolic syndrome. METHODS The participants were 11,119 adults aged 40-74 years who underwent specific health checkups, including an oral health examination, in 2018 in Japan. This study used the standard questions of the specific health checkups to obtain information on self-rated chewing function. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed with metabolic syndrome status as the dependent variable, and age, sex, lifestyle questions, self-rated chewing function, number of teeth, and periodontal status as the independent variables. RESULTS Number of teeth and periodontal status were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome after adjusting for confounding variables. Self-rated chewing function was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in the crude analysis, but not after adjustment for confounding variables. Both number of teeth and periodontal status were significantly associated with self-rated chewing function. CONCLUSION There was no significant direct association between self-rated chewing function and metabolic syndrome. Self-rated chewing function may be an indicator of poor oral condition that links to metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During restoration of poorly fitting complete dentures (CDs) in edentulous patients, liners are used to reconstruct the concave surfaces of CDs with a new base material. These relining materials are classified into resilient liners (RLs) and non-resilient liners (NRLs), but the clinical effects of these liners and their selection criteria remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of relining mandibular CDs using RL and NRL and to conduct a follow-up study. METHODS The study is currently being conducted at eight centers, and a parallel-group randomized controlled trial (RCT) is underway. One hundred thirty-two edentulous patients with poorly fitting mandibular CDs will be assigned to two groups based on whether they will receive RL or NRL. Participants will have an RL or NRL applied for relining their CDs using an indirect method of dynamic impressions. Data will be recorded at 1 week and 3, 6, and 12 months after denture delivery. The primary outcome will be assessment of the patients' general satisfaction by using a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes will be measured as patient-reported outcomes, including food intake status and oral hygiene-related quality of life. Masticatory performance and the number of sore spots on the oral mucosa will also be recorded. Comparisons between the two groups and within-subject comparisons of pre- and post-intervention measurements will be conducted. DISCUSSION For dentists and prosthetic researchers in Japan, this RCT will provide information on the clinical efficacy of RL materials in comparison to RNL in CD wearers. The new evidence regarding the use of RL materials in an aging population will also be useful to dentists in other countries in their routine clinical practice. TRIAL REGISTRATION This clinical trial has been registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network (UMIN) Center (UMIN000041950).

Masticatory index for patients wearing dental prosthesis as alternative to conventional masticatory ability measures. PLoS One 2022; 17:e0263048. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study objectives were: 1) to develop a masticatory index for evaluating masticatory ability in patients wearing a dental prosthesis, including complete dentures (CD), removable partial denture (RPD), and fixed partial denture (FPD), 2) to test the reliability and validity of the index, and 3) to determine whether the index better reflected patients' masticatory ability compared with conventional subjective and objective measures. METHODS The present cross-sectional study consisted of 2 phases: 1) developing the Chulalongkorn University masticatory index (CUMI) consisting of 20 food items in 5 masticatory difficulty grades using a 3-point Likert scale, and 2) application of the CUMI in 110 patients wearing a dental prosthesis, including CD, RPD, and FPD (control group). The CUMI test-retest reliability was reevaluated 2 weeks later. The convergent validity was compared with objective masticatory performance evaluated with a standard peanut chewing test, and subjective eating impacts evaluated by the Oral Impacts on Daily Performances Index. Oral and denture status were determined clinically. The associations between CUMI score, peanut particle size, and eating impact score was identified using Spearman's correlation coefficient. To evaluate discriminant validity, the associations between masticatory ability measurements and oral and denture status were analyzed using regression analyses. RESULTS The CUMI's Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient values were 0.89 and 0.95, respectively. The convergent validity was shown by significant associations between the increased CUMI score, smaller peanut particle size and decreased eating impact score. Multivariable analyses found that the CUMI score, peanut particle size, and percentage of having an eating impact were significantly associated with the number of remaining teeth and posterior occluding pairs, and type and quality of dental prosthesis. However, the CUMI demonstrated better discriminant validity because significant dose-response relationships were found only between the decreased CUMI score and increased tooth loss severity, and unacceptable denture quality. Adjusted R2 values of the CUMI models were the highest, followed by those of peanut particle size and eating impact. CONCLUSION CUMI is a reliable and valid tool to evaluate masticatory ability of patients wearing a dental prosthesis, including CD, RPD, and FPD. Due to a better discriminant validity, the CUMI better reflects masticatory ability of patients compared with conventional subjective and objective masticatory ability measures.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this systematic review was to critically evaluate the Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for masticatory function in adults. Methods Five electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, CINAHL Plus and APA PsycINFO) were searched up to March 2021. Studies reporting development or validation of PROMs for masticatory function on adults were identified. Methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) risk of bias checklist. Psychometric properties of the PROM in each included study were rated against the criteria for good measurement properties based on the COSMIN guideline. Results Twenty-three studies investigating 19 PROMs were included. Methodological qualities of these studies were diverse. Four types of PROMs were identified: questions using food items to assess masticatory function (13 PROMs), questions on chewing problems (3 PROMs), questions using both food items and chewing problems (2 PROMs) and a global question (1 PROM). Only a few of these PROMs, namely chewing function questionnaire-Chinese, Croatian or Albanian, food intake questionnaire-Japanese, new food intake questionnaire-Japanese, screening for masticatory disorders in older adults and perceived difficulty of chewing-Tanzania demonstrated high or moderate level of evidence in several psychometric properties. Conclusions Currently, there is no PROM for masticatory function in adults with high-level evidence for all psychometric properties. There are variations in the psychometric properties among the different reported PROMs. Trial Registration PROSPERO (CRD42020171591). Abstract
PURPOSE This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to elucidate the effectiveness of silicone-based resilient denture liners on perceived chewing ability. METHODS The RCT included completely edentulous patients on both the maxilla and mandible, who were willing to fabricate a new set of complete dentures. A random permuted block method (block size: 4) was used to assign groups to receive maxilla conventional complete denture and mandibular with either a conventional complete denture (CD) or complete demure relined with silicone-based resilient denture liner (RD). The patient-reported chewing ability of six foods, soybean curd, fish sausage, soybean sprout, cubic rice cracker, hard rice cracker, and dry squid, on a 100-mm visual analog scale was measured and reported at the final adjustment and three months after the final adjustment. Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze the differences between the CD and RD (p < 0.05). RESULTS Edentulous patients wearing mandibular complete denture with RD had a higher patient-reported chewing ability than those wearing a CD, but the fish sausage did not in the RD three months after the final adjustment. It also took three months for the patient-reported masticatory ability to improve for cubic rice crackers, hard rice crackers, and dry squid and to show a difference between the RD and CD groups. CONCLUSION Although limited to some food types, mandibular complete dentures relined with silicone-based liners improved patient-reported chewing ability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to subjectively and objectively assess masticatory function and identify related factors in older adults. METHODS From July 2017 to September 2018, we enrolled 115 healthy participants aged between 65 and 86 years. They underwent oral examination, and their stimulated salivary secretion rate and masseter muscle tone and biomechanical properties were assessed. Masticatory performance with two-colored chewing wax was objectively evaluated using the mixing ability index (MAI). Key food intake ability (KFIA) was subjectively assessed using a questionnaire. RESULTS The MAI score was significantly associated with the number of remaining teeth (r = 0.524, p < 0.001) and the tone (r = -0.222, p = 0.017), elasticity (r = -0.242, p = 0.009), and dynamic stiffness (r = -0.265, p = 0.004) of the masseter muscles. In contrast, the KFIA score was only significantly associated with the number of remaining teeth (r = 0.450, p < 0.001). A weak association between the MAI and KFIA scores was observed (r = 0.304, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A combination of objective and subjective methods should be used to accurately assess masticatory function in older adults. In addition to physical factors such as the number of remaining teeth, properties of the masticatory muscles should be evaluated to improve the masticatory function of older adults. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE In addition to dental problems, various maxillofacial and oral factors must be considered when establishing management strategies for the improvement of masticatory function in older adults.

Abstract
(1) Background: The degree of satisfaction with dental treatment varies among patients, and the discrepancy may exist between the patient's subjective evaluation and the objective assessment. Further, the optimal methods for increasing patient satisfaction with mastication remain unclear. This study aimed to identify factors affecting masticatory satisfaction in patients with removable partial dentures. (2) Methods: A total of 132 participants (71.0 ± 9.0 years) were included. Masticatory satisfaction was assessed on a visual analog scale. An oral health survey was conducted to assess the number of functional teeth, missing tooth classification: Kennedy classification, occlusal support: Eichner classification, and removable partial dentures wearing jaw. Objective masticatory performance was assessed using gummy jelly, while subjective masticatory ability was assessed using food acceptance status and oral health-related quality of life. The associations of these factors with masticatory satisfaction were assessed. (3) Results: Masticatory satisfaction among removable partial denture wearers was not significantly associated with gender, age, denture wearing jaw, Kennedy classification, and occlusal support. The degree of masticatory satisfaction was significantly greater with higher levels of masticatory function: masticatory performance, food acceptance score, and OHIP-14 score. The OHIP-14 score was the only significant explanatory variable for masticatory satisfaction in the multiple regression analysis; the strongest associations were with the "psychological discomfort" and "physical disability" subscales (p = 0.02 and p = 0.005, respectively). (4) Conclusions: Masticatory satisfaction among removable partial denture wearers was strongly associated with oral health-related quality of life, in which the ability to eat meals comfortably with removable partial dentures is the most important determinant of masticatory satisfaction.

Abstract
While appropriate nutrient intake is important for older adults, various oral problems cause decreased masticatory function. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the factors associated with decreased masticatory performance in older adults. Oral examinations were performed on 80 participants (mean age: 75.10 ± 5.64 years) to determine the number of functional tooth units (FTUs). Symptoms of periodontal and temporomandibular diseases were evaluated via a questionnaire. The tone, elasticity, and dynamic stiffness of the masseter muscle were measured using the Myoton® PRO device. The mixing ability test was used to assess the masticatory performance, and the mixing ability index (MAI) was calculated. The analysis of covariance test was performed to adjust for confounding factors, and multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors affecting MAI. A lower MAI was significantly associated with higher tone (p = 0.006) and lower elasticity (p = 0.013). The number of FTUs (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.724, p = 0.029), tone (adjusted OR = 1.215, p = 0.016), and elasticity (adjusted OR = 4.789, p = 0.038) were independently associated with the MAI. Muscle function training and prosthetic treatments may help increase masticatory performance in older adults, which would improve overall health.

Abstract
A large number of methodological procedures and experimental conditions are reported to describe the masticatory process. However, similar terms are sometimes employed to describe different methodologies. Standardisation of terms is essential to allow comparisons among different studies. This article was aimed to provide a consensus concerning the terms, definitions and technical methods generally reported when evaluating masticatory function objectively and subjectively. The consensus is based on the results from discussions and consultations among world‐leading researchers in the related research areas. Advantages, limitations and relevance of each method are also discussed. The present consensus provides a revised framework of standardised terms to improve the consistent use of masticatory terminology and facilitate further investigations on masticatory function analysis. In addition, this article also outlines various methods used to evaluate the masticatory process and their advantages and disadvantages in order to help researchers to design their experiments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although a food acceptance questionnaire is useful for subjective masticatory function assessments, its characteristics and limitations when applied to patients with removable dentures have been unclear. We therefore assessed the relationship between the subjective and objective masticatory function and explored whether or not a decreased masticatory function could be evaluated by food acceptance questionnaire. METHODS One hundred and nineteen patients >60 years old with removable partial and/or complete dentures participated. Food acceptance score (FAS) was calculated by using Sato's questionnaire with 20 food items. Masticatory performance (MP) was assessed by a visual scoring method using a test gummy jelly (UHA Mikakuto). Simple/multiple regression analyses were performed to explain the objective masticatory function. The cut-off value of FAS was determined to predict a decreased masticatory function by sensitivity, specificity and receiver operating characteristics curve. RESULTS No significant gender differences in MP or FAS were noted. Although both MP and FAS increased with the number of functional teeth, FAS was not significantly affected by age. The number of functional teeth, FAS and age had significant correlations with MP, with the number of functional teeth showing the strongest correlation. Multiple linear regression analyses identified the FAS as a significant explanatory variable for MP, and 70 was the optimal cut-off value for detecting a decreased masticatory function (MP score ≤ 2) in the diagnosis of 'oral hypofunction'. CONCLUSIONS Using FAS to assess the MP was deemed appropriate, and a score of 70 was the optimal cut-off value for detecting a decreased masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop and validate a questionnaire for assessing chewing function of Chinese older adults. METHODS The chewing function questionnaire was validated on older adults recruited from a dental hospital, an elderly home and three community centers in Hong Kong. The participants were asked to indicate their ability to chew on each of the 20 selected food items and to self-rate their overall chewing ability. Chewing function was objectively assessed by asking the participant to chew a color-changeable gum for 90 s. The color of the chewed gum was assessed using a colorimeter. Participant's maximum bite force was also measured by an electronic detector. RESULTS A total of 211 elders participated in this study. Ten out of the 20 food items were selected to create the final unidimensional chewing function questionnaire (CFQ). The overall Cronbach's alpha value for the CFQ was 0.912. The weighted kappa value of each food item ranged from 0.6 to 1. In general, participants with larger color change of the chewed gum had significantly higher median rank of the CFQ total score and of the score of each food item (p < 0.01). The CFQ total score was correlated with the color change of the chewed gum as measured by colorimeter (p < 0.001), the maximum bite force (p < 0.001) and self-rated chewing ability (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The new unidimensional chewing function questionnaire is a valid and reliable questionnaire for assessing self-rated chewing ability of Chinese older adults. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The newly developed self-reported questionnaire can be used to assess the chewing function of Chinese older adults and dentists can use the information obtained to discuss with their patients regarding the need for oral function rehabilitation, such as the treatment need for fixed or removable dental prosthesis.

Abstract
Mastication plays a primary role in the process of eating. Hence, compromised masticatory ability may affect the nutrition and quality of life, which are particularly important concerns among older individuals. It remains unclear how is the masticatory ability assessed regarding the nutritional status. We examined the effect of various oral factors on three masticatory ability tests conducted among older individuals. A total of 100 older individuals were enrolled in this study. Body mass index (BMI) as an indicator of nutritional status; and age, sex, and the number of occlusal and molar occlusal supports as clinical attributes were recorded. Three masticatory ability tests (masticatory efficiency, masticatory score, and satisfaction with mastication) were conducted, and tongue pressure, cheek pressure, and occlusal force were assessed as oral functions. A significant but weak correlation was found between masticatory efficiency and the masticatory score, but not between masticatory efficiency and satisfaction score. Objective masticatory efficiency was strongly associated with objective oral factors, whereas subjective assessments of masticatory ability (masticatory score and satisfaction score) were not. Furthermore, BMI was significantly associated with subjective assessments of masticatory ability but not with objective masticatory efficiency. Both subjective and objective assessments of masticatory ability, along with considerations of nutritional formulations, are required for the maintenance and improvement of nutritional status in older individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of dento-maxillary prosthesis adjustment procedure on levels of salivary cortisol. METHODS Nine participants (six men, three women, mean age 65.9 years) took part in this study. Saliva samples were collected before and after dento-maxillary prosthesis adjustment during the four different visits. Free cortisol levels were determined using a salivary cortisol immunoassay kit (expanded-range high-sensitivity salivary cortisol enzyme immunoassay kit, Salimetrics). Besides, original self-report sheets, a 35-item food intake questionnaire, the University of Washington Quality of Life (UW-QOL) questionnaire version 4, and the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) questionnaire were also administered. The changes of salivary cortisol levels were analyzed using 2-level multilevel linear regression, with adjustment for age, sex, and time. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare scores of the food intake questionnaire, UW-QOL questionnaire, and GOHAI questionnaire. RESULTS Salivary cortisol levels decreased significantly after carrying out the dento-maxillary prosthesis adjustment procedure. During the third adjustment, the salivary cortisol levels were significantly low. In addition, salivary cortisol levels of participants aged 70 years and over were significantly higher than other aged groups. The total scores for grade III-V of the food intake questionnaire increased significantly. Other questionnaires had a trend toward increasing scores, yet the differences were not significant. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that a reduction in symptoms of discomfort may have an influence on the decrease of salivary cortisol levels in dento-maxillary prosthesis wearers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine relevant factors for subjective and objective assessment of masticatory functions and elucidate any differences between the two methods. BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported that the results of subjective and objective assessment of masticatory function in older people do not necessarily agree. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 487 community-dwelling Japanese older people (205 male and 282 female; mean age 74.1±6.3 years) who participated in a comprehensive geriatric health examination. Basic information (gender and age), higher level of competence in daily living, depression, subjective masticatory function (SMF) and objective masticatory function (OMF) assessments, cognitive function, skeletal muscle mass, handgrip strength, gait speed and oral status (number of remaining and functional teeth, mouth dryness and occlusal force) were recorded. RESULTS Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that depression (odds ratio [OR]: 1.181, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.094-1.275), mouth dryness (OR: 2.037, CI: 1.212-3.423) and occlusal force (OR: 0.997, CI: 0.996-0.999) were significantly associated with SMF, whereas higher level of competence in daily living (OR: 0.730 CI: 0.586-0.910), skeletal muscle mass (OR: 0.521 CI: 0.283-0.960), number of functional teeth (OR: 0.862 CI: 0.775-0.959), number of remaining teeth (OR: 0.868 CI: 0.810-0.930) and occlusal force (OR: 0.994, CI: 0.991-0.998) were associated with OMF. CONCLUSION Subjective masticatory functionSMF and OMF were associated with different factors, suggesting that both mental and physical factors should be taken into consideration when treating decreased masticatory function.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The healing pattern after surgical resection of tumors of the oral cavity involving the maxilla may vary from one patient to another. The result may be open communication between the oral and nasal cavities (open defect) or complete oronasal separation after healing of the defect area (closed defect). PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to compare masticatory function and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) between patients with closed and open defects who had undergone a partial maxillectomy and were wearing dentomaxillary prostheses. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-eight participants who had undergone a partial maxillectomy and who were wearing dentomaxillary prostheses were enrolled between September 2014 and April 2016. Participants were assigned to 2 groups according to the type of defect after healing: 19 participants had a closed defect, and 19 participants had an open defect. Masticatory function was evaluated objectively and subjectively. The objective measurement was food-mixing ability, which was assessed using color-changeable chewing gum. The subjective measurement was perceived mastication ability, rated as a masticatory score based on the patient's responses to a 35-item food intake questionnaire. OHRQoL was assessed using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The GOHAI questionnaire consists of 12 items reflecting 3 hypothesized domains of the impact of oral disease: physical function, psychosocial function, and pain or discomfort. Differences in the scores obtained by the 3 measurements were compared between the 2 groups, using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test (α=.05). RESULTS No significant differences were seen between the 2 groups in objective mixing ability, subjective masticatory score, or GOHAI (P>.05). Regarding the GOHAI physical function domain, only the swallowing item was significantly lower (P=.025) in participants with an open defect than in participants with a closed defect. Regarding the GOHAI psychological function domain, the item related to patients' psychological worries or concerns about their teeth, gingival tissue, or dentures was significantly lower (P=.045) in patients with an open defect than in those with a closed defect. Other items related to physical function, psychological function, and pain or discomfort were not significantly different (P>.05) between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS The closed or open defect in patients who had undergone a partial maxillectomy may not influence patients' masticatory function and overall OHRQoL if they have adequate prosthetic rehabilitation. However, special consideration should be given to patients with an open defect with regard to swallowing function and psychological concerns in order to improve their OHRQoL.

Abstract
PURPOSE This preliminary study examined whether the type of surgery performed for head and neck lesion was associated perceived chewing ability, objective masticatory function, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients who required a dento-maxillary prosthesis postoperatively. METHODS Thirty-eight patients with a dento-maxillary prosthesis were divided into three groups according to the type of surgery received: marginal mandibulectomy, segmental mandibulectomy with bony reconstruction, or glossectomy. Perceived chewing ability, objective mixing ability, and OHRQoL were evaluated using a food intake questionnaire, color-changeable chewing gum, and the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), respectively. Differences in the scores obtained by the three measures were compared between the surgical groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test, and associations between the scores in each group were analyzed by Spearman's rank correlation analysis. RESULTS Objective mixing ability was found to be significantly low only in patients who underwent glossectomy. No other measures differed significantly between the surgical groups. Perceived chewing ability and objective mixing ability were significantly associated in the marginal mandibulectomy and glossectomy groups but not in the segmental mandibulectomy group. Furthermore, GOHAI score was significantly associated with perceived chewing ability and objective mixing ability in the marginal mandibulectomy group. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the present findings suggest that the type of surgery received might influence food mixing ability. Associations among food mixing ability, perceived chewing and OHRQoL are not accountable depending on the type of surgery received, indicating the presence of other contributing factors to be considered.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the changes in oral health and function through an oral health educational program for the independent older people with xerostomia. METHODS Community-dwelling older people with xerostomia aged over 65 years who participated in a preliminary comprehensive health survey in 2011 were recruited for the educational program. A total of 47 participants were randomly assigned into two groups, the intervention group (n = 26) and the control group (n = 21). The intervention group attended a 90-min oral health education program every 2 weeks for 3 months. The program consisted of oral hygiene instruction, facial and tongue muscle exercise, and salivary gland massage. The control group was provided only general information about oral health. The assessments of oral function, such as oral diadochokinesis of articulation, swallowing, taste threshold and salivary flow rate, were carried out before and after 3 months with or without intervention. RESULTS A total of 38 participants (21 of intervention group and 17 of control group) completed the study protocol. In the intervention group, resting salivation significantly improved after the program. The second and third cumulated Repetitive Saliva Swallowing Test times significantly improved in the intervention group. The threshold for bitterness significantly lowered in the intervention group, whereas the sour threshold significantly heightened in the control group after 3 months (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that the educational program targeting oral function improvement is effective among the independent older population.
