Abstract
BACKGROUND Suturing is a crucial clinical skill for nurse practitioners (NPs), but the effectiveness of traditional training methods (e.g., physical suture kits combined with video content) is low. OBJECTIVE This study compared the effectiveness and usability of a mobile-based web app (MoWa) developed for NPs to learn simple suturing skills with those of traditional instructional video-based training. METHODS The MoWa system utilizes mobile devices to simulate hands-on suturing and provides learning guidance and feedback to support self-learning with a physical suturing kit. Fifty-four suturing novices (NPs) were recruited as participants, divided into an experimental group (EG: 28 participants) and a control group (CG: 26 participants), and instructed to self-learn for 3 weeks. Learning effectiveness and system usability were evaluated through a pretest and posttest. RESULTS The EG exhibited significant improvements in learning outcomes, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and learning anxiety and expressed satisfaction with the MoWa system. Furthermore, the EG also considerably enhanced learning outcomes, self-efficacy, and learning anxiety compared to the CG, with no significant difference in self-confidence. CONCLUSION The MoWa system combined with deliberate practice is an effective strategy for supporting suturing skills training.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interprofessional communication is needed to enhance the early recognition and management of patients with sepsis. Preparing medical and nursing students using virtual reality simulation has been shown to be an effective learning approach for sepsis team training. However, its scalability is constrained by unequal cohort sizes between medical and nursing students. An artificial intelligence (AI) medical team member can be implemented in a virtual reality simulation to engage nursing students in sepsis team training. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an AI-powered doctor versus a human-controlled doctor in training nursing students for sepsis care and interprofessional communication. METHODS A randomized controlled trial study was conducted with 64 nursing students who were randomly assigned to undertake sepsis team training with an AI-powered doctor (AI-powered group) or with medical students using virtual reality simulation (human-controlled group). Participants from both groups were tested on their sepsis and communication performance through simulation-based assessments (posttest). Participants' sepsis knowledge and self-efficacy in interprofessional communication were also evaluated before and after the study interventions. RESULTS A total of 32 nursing students from each group completed the simulation-based assessment, sepsis and communication knowledge test, and self-efficacy questionnaire. Compared with the baseline scores, both the AI-powered and human-controlled groups demonstrated significant improvements in communication knowledge (P=.001) and self-efficacy in interprofessional communication (P<.001) in posttest scores. For sepsis care knowledge, a significant improvement in sepsis care knowledge from the baseline was observed in the AI-powered group (P<.001) but not in the human-controlled group (P=.16). Although no significant differences were found in sepsis care performance between the groups (AI-powered group: mean 13.63, SD 4.23, vs human-controlled group: mean 12.75, SD 3.85, P=.39), the AI-powered group (mean 9.06, SD 1.78) had statistically significantly higher sepsis posttest knowledge scores (P=.009) than the human-controlled group (mean 7.75, SD 2.08). No significant differences were found in interprofessional communication performance between the 2 groups (AI-powered group: mean 29.34, SD 8.37, vs human-controlled group: mean 27.06, SD 5.69, P=.21). However, the human-controlled group (mean 69.6, SD 14.4) reported a significantly higher level of self-efficacy in interprofessional communication (P=.008) than the AI-powered group (mean 60.1, SD 13.3). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested that AI-powered doctors are not inferior to human-controlled virtual reality simulations with respect to sepsis care and interprofessional communication performance, which supports the viability of implementing AI-powered doctors to achieve scalability in sepsis team training. Our findings also suggested that future innovations should focus on the sociability of AI-powered doctors to enhance users' interprofessional communication training. Perhaps in the nearer term, future studies should examine how to best blend AI-powered training with human-controlled virtual reality simulation to optimize clinical performance in sepsis care and interprofessional communication. Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality simulations are shown to be an effective approach for interprofessional nurse-physician communication training. However, its scalability is constrained by unequal medical-nursing cohort size, rendering a great challenge for all nursing students to form an interprofessional team with medical students. With the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), an AI medical team player can be integrated into virtual reality simulations for more nursing students to engage in interprofessional team training. OBJECTIVES To describe the development of a novel AI-enabled virtual reality simulation (AI-enabled VRS) and to evaluate nursing students' competencies and experiences in communicating with an AI medical doctor. METHODS A mixed-methods design using a one-group pretest-posttest design and focus group discussions were employed in the evaluation phase. Nursing students from a university were recruited to undertake the 2-hour AI-enabled VRS. Pre-test and post-tests were administered to evaluate the participants' communication knowledge and self-efficacy. Survey questionnaires were administered to examine their experiences with the virtual reality environment and the AI doctor. Five focus group discussions were conducted to gain deeper insight into their learning experiences. RESULTS The participants demonstrated significant improvements in communication knowledge and interprofessional communication self-efficacy after the learning. They reported positively on the acceptability, feasibility and usability of the AI-enabled VRS. The subscale of "human-like" feature of the AI medical doctor was rated the lowest. Three themes surrounding participants' experiences of the virtual learning emerged: "relate to the real world", "artificial intelligence versus human intelligence" and "complement with face-to-face learning". CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates initial evidence on the potential of AI-enabled VRS in fostering nursing students' learning on interprofessional communication skills. The findings have also provided insights on how to improve the AI-enabled VRS, in particular, the expressiveness of the AI pedagogical agent and facilitating more dialogue trainings with learner-agent conversations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of many. Particularly, nursing students experience greater stress as their normal curriculum is interrupted and some of them face the risk of being infected as frontline workers. Nursing faculty members may face similar struggles, in addition to developing teaching materials for online learning. Thus, it is important to examine the faculty members' and students' views on their ability to adapt during the pandemic to obtain a holistic view of how learning and training has been affected. DESIGN The descriptive cross-sectional quantitative design was used. SETTINGS Data were collected from Southeast and East Asian Nursing Education and Research Network (SEANERN) affiliated nursing institutions from January 2021 to August 2021. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1897 nursing students and 395 faculty members from SEANERN-affiliated nursing institutions in Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam were recruited for this study. METHODS Quantitative surveys were used to explore the satisfaction levels in education modalities, confidence levels, psychosocial well-being, sense of coherence and stress levels of nursing students and faculty members during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS Participants were mostly satisfied with the new education modalities, although most students felt that their education was compromised. Both groups showed positive levels of psychosocial well-being, despite scoring low to medium on the sense of coherence scale and experiencing great stress. The participants' sense of coherence was positively correlated with their psychosocial well-being and negatively correlated with stress levels. CONCLUSIONS While the COVID-19 pandemic had negatively impacted the lives of nursing students and faculty members, most of them had a healthy level of psychosocial well-being. Having a strong sense of coherence was associated with better psychosocial health and lower stress levels. As such, it may be helpful to develop interventions aimed at improving the sense of coherence of nursing students and staff to help them manage stressors better.

Abstract
The hallmark of medical action in geriatrics is the interprofessional treatment of the patient by a multi-professional team consisting of doctors, nurses and therapists with the aim of treating the patients primarily in a way that preserves their function and thereby enabling them to live as independently as possible. Therefore, at the beginning of every geriatric treatment, there is a multiprofessional geriatric assessment of functional abilities. With regard to successful medical action, this necessarily requires all health professions involved to understand geriatric patients and their limitations. Under ideal circumstances, their competencies overlap. From the point of view of the related disciplines, this means to teach working together with the other professions - interprofessionally - and learning from one another in order to effectively collaborate. After comparing the existing education in geriatrics within the Medical Curriculum Munich (MeCuM) with the European catalog of learning objectives for geriatricians (UEMS-GMS), a deficit with regard to geriatric assessment was recognized in the field of multi-professional training. Therefore, the existing geriatric curriculum of the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich should be expanded to include an interprofessional course on geriatric assessment. This project report aims to show the development and implementation of this course. For this purpose, the model for curriculum development according to Kern was used by the planners to establish an interprofessional briefing. Due to its innovative character, the course received public recognition and is the basis for the expansion of interprofessionalism in the sense of professional cooperation in geriatrics. Establishing interprofessionalism in other disciplines and locations is welcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disaster response inevitably challenges the capacity and capability of nurses. Nursing students are an important reserve force in disaster response; hence, disaster preparedness is increasingly needed. METHOD A two-arm randomized controlled trial was adopted. Forty-nine nursing students were assigned into the virtual reality (VR) groups, and 52 were allocated into the control group. Data were collected at baseline and at the end of the study. RESULTS After adjustments for basic characteristics, the effects of VR groups on disaster preparedness (F(1,94) = 11.049, p = .001, ηp2 = 0.105), confidence (F(1,94) = 6.992, p = .010, ηp2 = 0.069) and performance (F(1,94) = 4.298, p = .041, ηp2 = 0.044) were assured. CONCLUSION Integrating VR groups into the nursing curriculum on disaster response could enhance disaster preparedness, confidence, and performance among nursing students. VR groups represent a cost-effective modality of simulation in nursing education, which could bridge the gap between the lack of disaster training and the high demands for disaster preparedness. Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of evidence in the literature regarding the learning outcomes of immersive technologies as educational tools for teaching university-level health care students. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review is to assess the learning outcomes of immersive technologies compared with traditional learning modalities with regard to knowledge and the participants' learning experience in medical, midwifery, and nursing preclinical university education. METHODS A systematic review was conducted according to the Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. Randomized controlled trials comparing traditional learning methods with virtual, augmented, or mixed reality for the education of medicine, nursing, or midwifery students were evaluated. The identified studies were screened by 2 authors independently. Disagreements were discussed with a third reviewer. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI). The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews) in April 2020. RESULTS Of 15,627 studies, 29 (0.19%) randomized controlled trials (N=2722 students) were included and evaluated using the MERSQI tool. Knowledge gain was found to be equal when immersive technologies were compared with traditional learning modalities; however, the learning experience increased with immersive technologies. The mean MERSQI score was 12.64 (SD 1.6), the median was 12.50, and the mode was 13.50. Immersive technology was predominantly used to teach clinical skills (15/29, 52%), and virtual reality (22/29, 76%) was the most commonly used form of immersive technology. Knowledge was the primary outcome in 97% (28/29) of studies. Approximately 66% (19/29) of studies used validated instruments and scales to assess secondary learning outcomes, including satisfaction, self-efficacy, engagement, and perceptions of the learning experience. Of the 29 studies, 19 (66%) included medical students (1706/2722, 62.67%), 8 (28%) included nursing students (727/2722, 26.71%), and 2 (7%) included both medical and nursing students (289/2722, 10.62%). There were no studies involving midwifery students. The studies were based on the following disciplines: anatomy, basic clinical skills and history-taking skills, neurology, respiratory medicine, acute medicine, dermatology, communication skills, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. CONCLUSIONS Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality play an important role in the education of preclinical medical and nursing university students. When compared with traditional educational modalities, the learning gain is equal with immersive technologies. Learning outcomes such as student satisfaction, self-efficacy, and engagement all increase with the use of immersive technology, suggesting that it is an optimal tool for education.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sepsis is an important global healthcare problem that is a key challenge faced by healthcare professionals face worldwide. One key effort aimed at reducing the global burden of sepsis is educating healthcare professionals about early identification and management of sepsis. AIM To provide a comprehensive evaluation of sepsis education among healthcare professionals and students. METHODS Six databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Scopus) were searched. We included studies that described and evaluated any form of education or training on sepsis delivered to healthcare professionals and students. Study outcomes were summarised according to the adapted Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation. RESULTS Thirty-two studies were included in the review. The learning contents were reported to be in accordance with the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines. Seven studies included the topic of interprofessional teamwork and communication in their sepsis education content. Most educational programs were effective and reported positive effects on immediate knowledge outcomes. Interventions that were delivered through an active learning approach such as simulation and game-based learning generally produced greater gains than didactic teaching. Improvements in patient care processes and patient outcomes were associated with the concomitant existence or implementation of a hospital sepsis care bundle. CONCLUSION Incorporating active learning strategies into sepsis education interventions has the potential to improve learners' long-term outcomes. In addition, sepsis education and protocol-based sepsis care bundle act in synergy to augment greater improvements in care processes and patient benefits.

Abstract
Introdução: A partir da necessidade de reestruturação das instituições de ensino em saúde devido à pandemia da COVID-19, o ensino híbrido vem se destacando como possibilidade de reorganização das atividades educativas. O objetivo deste estudo foi escrever o desenvolvimento do ensino híbrido na formação de profissionais da área da saúde. Materiais e Métodos: Revisão sistemática da literatura, baseada nas recomendações da Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em pares, entre julho a setembro de 2020, em quatro bases de dados eletrônicas. Os descritores foram os termos “Educação a Distância”, “Educação Superior”, “Aprendizagem”, “Saúde”, “Enfermagem”, “Medicina”, “Odontologia” e “Fisioterapia” e “Ensino híbrido”. Os artigos foram classificados conforme seu Nível de Evidência. Resultados: 49 artigos foram selecionados, entre estudos quantitativos, qualitativos e de método misto. Foram encontradas experiências do desenvolvimento do ensino híbrido nos diferentes cursos de formação na área da saúde. Observou-se aplicação do ensino híbrido segundo o modelo de Rotação, modelo à la carte e o modelo Flex. Discussão: o ensino híbrido vem ganhando destaque cada vez maior no cenário da educação acadêmica em saúde. Foi visto que, a partir dele, o aluno destaca-se em sua aprendizagem, pois é o principal gerenciador deste processo, aprendendo ativamente por diversos instrumentos educativos a partir da condução do professor. Conclusões: O êxito do ensino híbrido pode estar relacionado ao seu caráter inovador, flexível, com boa relação custo-benefício e capaz de tornar os alunos protagonistas do seu processo de ensino-aprendizagem, influenciando no desempenho acadêmico dos alunos.

Abstract
Learning with the learner in an asynchronous group learning approach is a promising method of education that provides a rich, interactive, and socially mediated education. As online learning became more prevalent, and more users are adopting this approach, innovative and theory-based educational activities became necessary. In this article, we introduce and describe a novel form of asynchronous, interactive, and socializing educational activity using educational technology. The educational session is based on a small group learning activity that is made available for all learners anywhere and anytime. The approach avoids the trap of using educational technology for mere simulation of in-person learning. Based on learning theories, learning with the learner enhances interactive, self-directed, experiential, and social learning. Future development and enhancement with ongoing discussions through online chat platforms open the door for the continuous evolution of the concept. Educational technology has evolved from basic use to provide self-directed learning opportunities for learners. Learning from learners offers a stimulating, socially interactive, and entertaining educational alternative approach. It provides a better alternative to the classical video lectures or other unidirectional delivery of information activities. It is a practical, easy to structure with a low-cost approach that accommodates how students like to learn.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine three distinct aspects of authenticity that pre-service teachers (PSTs) experience when they engage with virtual classroom environments to develop their content-intensive instructional practice – task authenticity, student avatar authenticity and performance authenticity – and their perceptions about the usefulness of the simulated teaching experience to support their learning.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper explored these conceptions of authenticity and usefulness within a larger research study whose goal was to develop virtual environment tools to help elementary PSTs learn how to engage in one ambitious teaching practice: facilitating discussions that engage students in argumentation. To examine these aspects of authenticity and usefulness, this paper used a general qualitative deductive analysis approach to examine data from 104 interviews with 26 case study teachers and examined patterns in PSTs’ perceptions within and across interviews and authenticity aspects.
Findings
While these PSTs strongly value the utility of these tools to support their learning, findings point to variation in their perceptions of authenticity. Findings showed that most PSTs perceived the tasks as an authentic representation of the work of teaching. However, their perceptions of task authenticity did not always align with their perceptions of avatar or performance authenticity.
Originality/value
This paper argues that these three aspects of authenticity relate to, but expand upon, the broader notions of presence and plausibility noted in the literature on virtual environments and should be taken up more directly in future studies of users’ perceptions of virtual environments both within and outside of educational contexts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A challenge to substantiating the value of interprofessional education (IPE) has been the limited number of studies that assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions compared with education interventions in which professions were learning separately from one another. PURPOSE The purpose was to compare interprofessional socialization (IS) in mixed-discipline and single-discipline-only student cohorts to determine if mixed-discipline cohorts demonstrate greater improvement in IS compared with single-discipline cohorts. METHODS Interprofessional socialization was measured using the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale in 166 university students who completed a semester-long online palliative care course. RESULTS Statistically significant increases in IS were seen with all participants, both those in discipline-specific as well as mixed-discipline cohorts and in all IS subscales. No difference was observed between a cohort of nursing student-only learners versus a cohort of mixed-discipline students. CONCLUSION The study demonstrates that IS can be significantly increased whether students participate with single discipline peers or in mixed-discipline settings.

Abstract
Students often feel overwhelmed by the volume and complexity of knowledge and skills required to learn. Along with this challange, educational technology has been gradually introduced in medical education to facilitate learning and improve outcomes. It became an essential part of communication, storing and transferring information, audio-visual media use and production, and knowledge sharing. Technology's role has been expanding from a mere tool of study and inquiry to an approach and integrated use in education. Its use in medical education is continuously evolving. However, the impact and optimal use of various technology applications are not clearly defined. There are multiple challenges facing educators to choose the right application for the specific educational purpose. Hence, studies and evaluation reviews are needed to inform the better-defined use of educational technology. This review aims to discuss and evaluate various educational technology applications in medical education, focusing on interactive learning during lectures. Lectures and other group learning sessions are common activities used by medical schools. Promoting interactive learning in large groups is known to be challenging. The advances in technology to facilitate communication and promote interaction is a promising adjunct for lectures interactivity.

Simulation is an integral component of undergraduate nursing education because it allows for a safe, timely, and prescriptive approach to meet learning objectives at the levels of individual simulations, courses, and academic programs. This review of the literature provides an overview of steps taken to move simulation forward in undergraduate nursing education, and it highlights educational theories, research, best practices, and policy statements underpinning modern nursing simulation. This chapter outlines simulation and curriculum integration approaches and provides examples of participant, course, and program outcomes.

Abstract
Background Interprofessional team training is needed to improve nurse-physician communication skills that are lacking in clinical practice. Using simulations has proven to be an effective learning approach for team training. Yet, it has logistical constraints that call for the exploration of virtual environments in delivering team training. Objective This study aimed to evaluate a team training program using virtual reality vs conventional live simulations on medical and nursing students’ communication skill performances and teamwork attitudes. Methods In June 2018, the authors implemented nurse-physician communication team training using communication tools. A randomized controlled trial study was conducted with 120 undergraduate medical and nursing students who were randomly assigned to undertake team training using virtual reality or live simulations. The participants from both groups were tested on their communication performances through team-based simulation assessments. Their teamwork attitudes were evaluated using interprofessional attitude surveys that were administered before, immediately after, and 2 months after the study interventions. Results The team-based simulation assessment revealed no significant differences in the communication performance posttest scores (P=.29) between the virtual and simulation groups. Both groups reported significant increases in the interprofessional attitudes posttest scores from the baseline scores, with no significant differences found between the groups over the 3 time points. Conclusions Our study outcomes did not show an inferiority of team training using virtual reality when compared with live simulations, which supports the potential use of virtual reality to substitute conventional simulations for communication team training. Future studies can leverage the use of artificial intelligence technology in virtual reality to replace costly human-controlled facilitators to achieve better scalability and sustainability of team-based training in interprofessional education.
