Abstract
Patients with heart failure (HF) reportedly have activated platelets with increased platelet distribution width (PDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV), which lead to thrombotic events. These platelet indices are easily measured by routine blood tests and have been proposed as potential markers of cardiac events. We performed the present study to clarify whether platelet indices correlate to the severity of HF and to the prognosis of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). We performed a retrospective single-center study including 400 patients with CHD [median age, 34 years (range 12-76); 49% males] hospitalized between 2014 and 2017. We assessed their clinical data, correlation between platelet indices and severity of HF, and prognosis of HF-related hospitalization and thrombus formation. In multivariate analysis, a significant correlation was found between PDW and logBNP (log-transformed brain natriuretic peptide; r = 0.30, p < 0.001), as well as between MPV and logBNP (r = 0.24, p < 0.001). After treatment for heart failure, a significant reduction was found in PDW (average value before treatment: 14.2; after: 13.2, p = 0.017). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, PDW [hazard ratio (HR) 1.365; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.005-1.768] and MPV (HR 1.472; 95% CI 1.055-2.052) were predictors of HF-related hospitalization. Similarly, PDW (HR 1.998; 95% CI 1.461-2.630) and MPV (HR 1.792; 95% CI 1.155-2.781) were predictors of thrombus formation. Platelet volume indices correlate to severity of heart failure and have prognostic value for both cardiac and thrombotic events in patients with CHD.

Abstract
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an inflammatory marker indicative of platelet activation. There are several studies that suggest an association between the neoplastic process and cancer metastasis. We performed a retrospective analysis to investigate the role of MPV as a prognostic informative marker in gallbladder cancer. This study included 73 patients who underwent treatment for gallbladder cancer with curative or palliative intent. MPV was obtained and statistically analysed to investigate the association between the nodal status (N), the overall stage as per the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system, perineural invasion, and differentiation of the tumor. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS Statistics, version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). We found that the MPV values were significantly high in node-positive cases (OR = 3.623, 95% CI = 7.778-1.687, p value = -0.0001), cases in the advanced stage (OR = 3.623, 95% CI = 7.778-1.687, p value = 0.0001), cases with perineural invasion (OR = 3.396, 95% CI = 8.319-1.387, p value = -0.0001), and poor differentiation (OR = 2.327, 95% CI = 4.651-1.164, p value = -0.002 ). MPV is an inexpensive and convenient inflammatory marker that correlates with nodal positivity in the staging and prognostication of gallbladder cancer. This marker can be used to ascertain the risk status of gallbladder cancer.

Abstract
Background Involving pre-sampled patients with cholecystitis, dysplasia, and adenocarcinoma, the present study aimed to compare the neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR), monocyte/lymphocyte (MLR), platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) ratios, and plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) values and to determine their prognostic importance. Methods The present study involved 187 cholecystectomy specimens that were diagnosed as cholecystitis, dysplasia, and adenocarcinoma. Preoperative neutrophil, monocyte, lymphocyte, and platelet counts, NLR, MLR, and PLR ratios, and PCT, MPV, and PDW levels of the same patient groups were retrospectively recorded. Results In the present study, the cut-off values for dysplasia of NLR, PLR, and MLR were found as 1.61, 81.45, and .19, whereas those for cancer of NLR, PLR, and MLR were 2.65, 182.69, and .35, respectively. The NLR, PLR, and MLR values of the chronic cholecystitis and chronic calculous cholecystitis groups were statistically significantly lower than those of the chronic active calculous cholecystitis group (P < .01). The NLR and MLR values of the non-cancer and non-dysplasia groups were statistically lower than those of the cancer and dysplasia groups (P < .05). Conclusion According to the results of the present study, using additional imaging methods, acute-phase cholecystitis can be distinguished using preoperative neutrophil and monocyte counts, and NLR, PLR, and MLR cut-off values can be used to distinguish dysplasia, which is the antecedent of gallbladder cancer. It is thought that this might provide patients with an advantage in terms of early treatment and survival.

Abstract
Due to the inherent molecular heterogeneity of metastatic tumours and the dynamic evolution ability of tumour genomes, tumour tissues obtained through biopsy and other methods cannot capture all of the features of tumour genomes. A new diagnostic concept called “liquid biopsy” has received widespread attention in recent years. Liquid biopsy has changed the clinical practice of oncology and is widely used to guide targeted drug utilization, monitor disease progression and track drug resistance. The latest research subject in liquid biopsy is platelets. Platelets originate from multifunctional haematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow haematopoietic system. They are small cells from the cytoplasm of bone marrow megakaryocytes. Their main physiological functions are to participate in the processes of physiological haemostasis and coagulation. Tumour cells transfer biomolecules (such as RNA) to platelets through direct contact and release of exosomes, which changes the platelet precursor RNA. Under the stimulation of tumour cells and the tumour microenvironment, platelet precursor mRNA is spliced into mature RNA and converted into functional protein to respond to external stimuli, forming tumour-educated platelets (TEPs). The detection of TEPs in the peripheral blood of patients is expected to be used in clinical tumour diagnosis. This emerging liquid biopsy method can replace and supplement the current tumour detection methods. Further research on the role of platelets in tumour diagnosis will help provide a novel theoretical basis for clinical tumour diagnosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Gall bladder cancer (GBC) tends to present in advanced stages, therefore, early diagnosis of GBC is necessary. There is no ideal single tumor marker available presently for the diagnosis and prognosis of GBC. Platelet distribution width (PDW) is an early marker for activated platelets and has been used in a variety of tumors to assess prognosis. This study was designed to evaluate the utility of PDW in identifying GBC patients and its association with tumor markers, staging and resectability of GBC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross sectional study was done on 100 patients of GBC and 100 age- and sex- matched healthy controls. PDW was evaluated and compared between GBC and healthy controls. Receiver-operating characteristics was plotted to determine optimal cut-off for identifying GBC patients and to determine sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of PDW. Correlation between serum tumor markers (carbohydrate antigen 19-9, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen 125) and PDW were evaluated. Association of PDW with hyperbilirubinemia, staging and resectability of GBC was also studied. RESULTS: A significantly higher PDW with a median of 18.1 was observed in GBC as compared to healthy controls with median value of 13. PDW was found to have a very high sensitivity (90%), specificity (95%), PPV (94%) and NPV (90%) in identifying GBC at cut-off of 16 with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.97. An increase of PDW was observed with increasing stage and unresectable GBC. However, it was not statistically significant. Significant positive correlation was observed between PDW and all three serum tumor markers and good positive correlation with r = 0.61 was observed with CA 19-9. CONCLUSION: PDW was associated with GBC and may be considered as a cost- effective marker in adjunct to other investigations for the diagnosis of GBC.

Abstract
Purpose For the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), reliable early indicators with sensitivity and specificity should be sought. This study evaluated the effect of the combined use of mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPV/PC ratio) and platelet distribution width (PDW) for differential diagnosis of NPC. In this study, MPV/PC ratio was used for the first time to diagnostically evaluate NPC. Patients and methods We retrospectively analyzed various hematological indices of three subject groups (208, 185, and 162 patients with NPC, benign tumors of the nasopharynx, and healthy subjects, respectively) and evaluated the value of combined use of MPV/PC ratio and PDW for differential diagnosis of the three groups using the one-way analysis of variance. Results Comparison of laboratory variables between the three groups showed a significant difference in MPV/PC ratio and PDW (P<0.001, all). The MPV/PC ratio in the NPC group was significantly lower than the other two groups (P<0.001); MPV/PC ratio also showed a statistically significant difference in different stages (P=0.034) and serosal invasions (P<0.001) of the NPC group. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that areas under the curve (AUC) of either patients with benign tumors of the nasopharynx (AUCMPV/PCratio+PDW: 0.708) or healthy subjects (AUCMPV/PCratio+PDW: 0.909) were larger than those of MPV/PC ratio (AUCMPV/PCratio: 0.665, 0.869, respectively) and PDW (AUCPDW:0.614, 0.716, respectively) use alone (P<0.05, all). Conclusion MPV/PC ratio and PDW may be used as indexes of NPC. MPV/PC ratio combined with PDW could be considered as meaningful laboratory indexes for differential diagnosis of NPC, benign tumors of the nasopharynx, and healthy subjects. This finding could enhance the detection of NPC.

Abstract
Introduction Gastric cancer is ranked fourth among all cancers in the world and second in cancer-related deaths. Gastritis leads to the activation of neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages, and platelets. Long-term inflammation leads to multistage histopathologic changes called Correa tract, which includes gastritis, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia (IM), dysplasia, and cancer stages. Aim To determine if there is any difference in haematological parameters between gastric cancer (GC) patients, patients with IM, and healthy controls (HC). Material and methods Seventy-three GC patients, 79 patients with IM, and 70 HCs were included in the study. Demographics and laboratory parameters of complete blood count were extracted from the hospital medical database records. Results The mean Hb levels were statistically significant between all three groups. Mean red cell distribution width (RDW), white blood cells (WBC), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte (MLR) levels were statistically significantly different between gastric cancer and healthy controls. Mean RDW, MPV, and PDW levels were statistically significantly different between the IM and healthy control groups. Mean WBC, NLR, PLR, and MLR levels were statistically significantly different between the gastric cancer and IM groups. Conclusions RDW, platelet count, NLR, MLR, and PLR have diagnostic value and can help to distinguish patients with GC from those with IM. These parameters are accessible easily, the cost is not high, and it may help patients not to delay endoscopic screening.
