Recent Progress in Metal-Microbe Interactions: Prospects in Bioremediation

A Pseudomonas Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacterium and Arbuscular Mycorrhiza differentially modulate the growth, photosynthetic performance, nutrients allocation, and stress response mechanisms triggered by a mild Zinc and Cadmium stress in tomato

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR; Pseudomonas strain So_08) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; Rhizoglomus irregulare BEG72 and Funneliformis mosseae BEG234) in mitigating the detrimental effects of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) stress in tomato plants. Plant biomass, root morphology, leaf relative water content, membrane stability, photosynthetic performance, chlorophyll content, and heavy metals (HMs) accumulation were determined. Furthermore, an ionomic profile was conducted to investigate whether microbial inoculants affected the uptake and allocation of macro- and micronutrients. Metabolomics with pathway analysis of both roots and leaves was performed to unravel the mechanisms underlying the differential responses to HMs stress. The findings revealed that the levels of HMs did not significantly affect plant growth parameters; however, they affected membrane stability, photosynthetic performance, nutrient allocation, and chlorophyll content. Cadmium was mainly accumulated in roots, whilst Zn exhibited accumulation in various plant organs. Our findings demonstrate the beneficial effects of PGPR and AMF in mitigating Cd and Zn stress in tomato plants. The microbial inoculations improved physiological parameters and induced differential accumulation of macro- and micronutrients, modulating nutrient uptake balance. These results provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the plant-microbe interactions and highlight the differential modulation of the biosynthetic pathways of secondary metabolites related to oxidative stress response, membrane lipids stability, and phytohormone crosstalk.

Heavy metals (HMs) pollution in the aquatic environment: Role of probiotics and gut microbiota in HMs remediation

The presence of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic ecosystems is a universal concern due to their tendency to accumulate in aquatic organisms. HMs accumulation has been found to cause toxic effects in aquatic organisms. The common HMs-induced toxicities are growth inhibition, reduced survival, oxidative stress, tissue damage, respiratory problems, and gut microbial dysbiosis. The application of dietary probiotics has been evolving as a potential approach to bind and remove HMs from the gut, which is called "Gut remediation". The toxic effects of HMs in fish, mice, and humans with the potential of probiotics in removing HMs have been discussed previously. However, the toxic effects of HMs and protective strategies of probiotics on the organisms of each trophic level have not been comprehensively reviewed yet. Thus, this review summarizes the toxic effects caused by HMs in the organisms (at each trophic level) of the aquatic food chain, with a special reference to gut microbiota. The potential of bacterial probiotics in toxicity alleviation and their protective strategies to prevent toxicities caused by HMs in them are also explained. The dietary probiotics are capable of removing HMs (50-90%) primarily from the gut of the organisms. Specifically, probiotics have been reported to reduce the absorption of HMs in the intestinal tract via the enhancement of intestinal HM sequestration, detoxification of HMs, changing the expression of metal transporter proteins, and maintaining the gut barrier function. The probiotic is recommended as a novel strategy to minimize aquaculture HMs toxicity and safe human health.

Application of Cyanobacteria Arthospira platensis for Bioremediation of Erbium-Contaminated Wastewater

Erbium belongs to rare earth elements critical for industry, especially nuclear technology. Cyanobacteria Arthospira platensis was used for Er(III) removal from wastewater by applying biosorption and bioaccumulation processes. The influence of pH, Er(III) concentration, contact time and temperature on the biosorption capacity of Arthospira platensis was determined. The optimal conditions for Er(III) removal were defined as pH 3.0, time 15 min and temperature 20 °C, when 30 mg/g of Er(III) were removed. The kinetics of the process was better described by the pseudo-first-order model, while equilibrium fitted to the Freundlich model. In bioaccumulation experiments, the uptake capacity of biomass and Er(III) effect on biomass biochemical composition were assessed. It was shown that Er(III) in concentrations 10-30 mg/L did not affect the content of biomass, proteins, carbohydrate and photosynthetic pigments. Its toxicity was expressed by the reduction of the lipids content and growth of the level of malonic dialdehyde. Biomass accumulated 45-78% of Eu(III) present in the cultivation medium. Therefore, Arthospira platensis can be considered as a safe and efficient bioremediator of erbium contaminated environment.

Plants endophytes: unveiling hidden agenda for bioprospecting toward sustainable agriculture

Endophytic microbes are present in nearly all of the plant species known to date but how they enter and flourish inside a host plant and display multiple benefits like plant growth promotion (PGP), biodegradation, and stress alleviation are still unexplored. Until now, the majority of the research has been conducted assuming that the host-endophyte interaction is analogous to the PGP microbes, although, studies related to the mechanisms of their infection, colonization as well as conferring important traits to the plants are limited. It would be fascinating to explore the role of these endophytic microbes in host gene expression, metabolism, and the modulation of phenotypic traits, under abiotic and biotic stress conditions. In this review, we critically focused on the following areas: (i) endophytic lifestyle and the mechanism of their entry into plant tissues, (ii) how endophytes modulate the immune system of plants and affect the genotypic and phenotypic expression of host plants under abiotic and biotic stress condition, and (iii) the role of omics and other integrated genomic approaches in unraveling complex host-endophyte signaling crosstalk. Furthermore, we discussed their role in phytoremediation of heavy metal stress and whole genomic analysis based on an understanding of different metabolic pathways these endophytes utilize to combat stress.

Antibacterial Properties of Superhydrophilic Textured Copper in Contact with Bacterial Suspensions

The method of pulsed laser processing with a nanosecond pulse duration was employed to obtain a nanotexture on the surface of copper alloys. The effect of the obtained micro- and nanotexture on the bactericidal properties of the surface upon its contact with suspensions containing of E. coli K12 C600 or K. pneumoniae 811 cells in a nutrient medium were studied. The evolution of cell morphology after on the nanotextured surface was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and changes in biological fluid during this contact were studied by mass spectrometry. It was shown that massive death of bacterial cells both in the suspension and on the nanotextured surface was determined by combined toxic effects of the hierarchically textured surface and high concentration of Cu²⁺ ions in the medium.
