Abstract
Sedatives promote calmness or sleepiness during surgery or severely stressful events. In addition, depression is a mental health issue that negatively affects emotional well-being. A group of drugs called anti-depressants is used to treat major depressive illnesses. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of quercetin (QUR) and linalool (LIN) on thiopental sodium (TS)-induced sleeping mice and to investigate the combined effects of these compounds using a conventional co-treatment strategy and in silico studies. For this, the TS-induced sleeping mice were monitored to compare the occurrence, latency, and duration of the sleep-in response to QUR (10, 25, 50 mg/kg), LIN (10, 25, 50 mg/kg), and diazepam (DZP, 3 mg/kg, i.p.). Moreover, an in silico investigation was undertaken to assess this study's putative modulatory sedation mechanism. For this, we observed the ability of test and standard medications to interact with various gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor (GABAA) subunits. Results revealed that QUR and LIN cause dose-dependent antidepressant-like and sedative-like effects in animals, respectively. In addition, QUR-50 mg/kg and LIN-50 mg/kg and/or DZP-3 mg/kg combined were associated with an increased latency period and reduced sleeping times in animals. Results of the in silico studies demonstrated that QUR has better binding interaction with GABAA α3, β1, and γ2 subunits when compared with DZP, whereas LIN showed moderate affinity with the GABAA receptor. Taken together, the sleep duration of LIN and DZP is opposed by QUR in TS-induced sleeping mice, suggesting that QUR may be responsible for providing sedation-antagonizing effects through the GABAergic interaction pathway.

Abstract
Herein, we report a platform to integrate customizable quantities of catechol units into polymers by reacting caffeic acid carbonic anhydride with polymers having pendant amine groups. Brush poly(ethylene glycol)-caffeamide (PEG-CAF) copolymers based on oligo(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA500) were obtained with a catechol content of approximately 30, 40, and 50 mol % (vs OEGMA content). Owing to the hydrophobicity of the introduced CAF groups, the catechol copolymers exhibited cloud points in the range of 23-46 °C and were used to fabricate thermoresponsive FeIII metal-phenolic network capsules. Polymers with the highest CAF content (50 mol %) proved most effective for attenuating reactive oxygen species levels in vitro, in co-cultured fibroblasts, and breast cancer cells, even in the presence of an exogenous oxidant source. The reported approach to synthesize customizable catechol materials could be generalized to other amine-functional polymers, with potential biomedical applications such as adhesives or stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medicinal and aromatical plants (MAPs) have been historically used as traditional remedies in many cultures in Europe and globally. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of MAPs in various health disorders in association to dietary habits and other lifestyle factors among residents in Thrace, NE Greece. METHODS Data were collected through anonymous and voluntary responses to a structured online questionnaire, via convenience (snowball) sampling. RESULTS The 561 responders (age: 39.7 ± 11.6 y) were mostly female (59.7%), with higher education (69.8%), working as state or private employees (55.4%), and having low/medium income (77.1%). Overall, more than 70% were using MAPs in various symptoms and common health disorders, such as chamomile against common cold and the flu. More than 20 different MAPs were being used in smaller frequencies against various conditions. Key contributing factors to the consumption of MAPs were sex (female over male), employment (employed vs. unemployed), education (higher education vs. lower) and higher Body Mass Index (overweight and obese vs. normal), while consumption of fruit, fish, and vegetables was mainly associated with the use of MAPs as common items of diet and in health disorders. CONCLUSIONS The use of MAPs as part of the diet and as traditional remedy is present in the examined population, while particular choices seem to be affected by sociodemographic and lifestyle factors.

Abstract
The genus Acacia (Family Leguminosae) is composed of several medicinal plants used for treating miscellaneous diseases. Amid the important members of this genus, A. nilotica and A. ataxacantha are widely employed for their tremendous healing properties. Hence, this present work aimed to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and investigate the antioxidant, antiproliferative, anti-enzyme and antimicrobial potentials of methanolic and water extracts of leaves and stem bark of A. nilotica and A. ataxacantha obtained by maceration and ultrasonication. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were obtained in the range of 33.35-116.60 mg GAE/g and 0.26-49.90 mg RE/g, respectively, with the methanolic leaf extracts of both species showing the highest contents. Moreover, the methanolic extracts were observed to display higher antioxidant potentials in almost all antioxidant assays performed compared to the water extracts (ABTS: 52.66-943.81 mg TE/g, DPPH: 8.51-493.90 mg TE/g, CUPRAC: 106.39-1193.75 mg TE/g; FRAP: 31.38-416.21 mg TE/g, and phosphomolybdenum: 0.90-4.17 mM TE/g). However, the water extracts were seen to be better metal chelators than the methanolic extracts (8.47-36.85 mg EDTAE/g). Additionally, all extracts were found to exhibit anti-tyrosinase (30.79-74.80 mg KAE/g) and anti-amylase (0.10-1.10 mM ACAE/g) properties. With the exception of a few extracts, glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitions (1.69-2.12 mg ACAE/g and 0.42-2.61 mg GALAE/g, respectively) were also demonstrated. While the methanolic extracts of both species showed antimicrobial potency against all the 18 tested microorganisms (gram positive, gram negative, and fungi), the water extracts were effective only against the gram positive bacteria. The extracts were also found to exhibit antiproliferative effects on SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells, with the methanolic extracts showing higher cytotoxic potential than the water extracts. Therefore, this study showed these species to be good sources of antioxidants, enzyme inhibitors, antimicrobials and antiproliferative agents, which could be of great interest for their applications as natural bioactive ingredients in the development of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Lipophilic polyphenol compounds (LPCs) are claimed to exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities that may improve human health and wellbeing, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. Nanoemulsion-based delivery systems have been developed to encapsulate LPCs so as to increase their food matrix compatibility, physicochemical stability, and bioavailability. LPCs vary in their structural features, including the number and position of phenolic hydroxyl, ketone, and aliphatic groups, which results in different molecular, physicochemical, and gastrointestinal properties. In this study, we examined the impact of plant-based carrier oils (coconut, sunflower, and flaxseed oils) and LPC type (curcumin, resveratrol, and quercetin) on the in vitro gastrointestinal fate of polyphenols loaded into quillaja saponin-stabilized nanoemulsions. Coconut oil contains high levels of medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MC-SFAs), sunflower oil contains high levels of long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (LC-MUFAs), and flaxseed oil contains high levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs). The encapsulation efficiency and gastrointestinal stability of the LPCs were slightly lower in the MC than the LC oils. Differences in the gastrointestinal stability of the three LPCs were linked to differences in their oil-water partition coefficients. Some of the LPCs inhibited lipid digestion for certain oil types. In particular, resveratrol retarded the digestion of all three oils, but it still had the highest GIT stability and bioaccessibility. This study provides valuable information about the gastrointestinal fate of LPC-loaded nanoemulsions and highlights important differences in the behavior of LPCs with different characteristics. This knowledge may facilitate the design of more effective plant-based delivery systems for bioactive lipophilic polyphenols.

Abstract
The Republic of Croatia has a long tradition of fruit growing due to its geographical location, climatic conditions, and high quality of fruit crops, especially apple fruits. Apples can be used for the formulation of functional foods either in processed form (e.g., juice), or as a by-product (e.g., apple pomace). However, there is a growing demand for functional foods derived from ancient and traditional plant sources as they are recognized as a very valuable source of health-promoting bioactive ingredients. Similarly, old apple cultivars (Malus domestica Borkh.) are characterized by good morphological and pomological properties, less need for chemicals during cultivation and the higher share of biologically active compounds (BACs) with better sensory acceptability compared to commercial cultivars. However, their nutritional and biological potential is underestimated, as is their ability to be processed into functional food. The importance in preserving old apple cultivars can also be seen in their significance for improving the nutritional composition of other apple cultivars through innovative cultivation strategies, and therefore old local apple cultivars could be of great importance in future breeding programs.
