LEARNING TO WORK SAFELY WITH REFERENCE TO A SOCIAL-COGNITIVE MODEL

Farmers' Knowledge, Attitude, and Adoption of Smart Agriculture Technology in Taiwan

Climate change and food security are critical topics in sustainable agricultural development. The climate-smart agriculture initiative proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has attracted international attention. Smart agriculture (SA) has since been recognized as an influential trend contributing to agricultural development. Therefore, encouraging farmers to adopt digital technologies and mobile devices in farming practices has become a policy priority worldwide. However, the literature on the psychological factors driving farmers’ intentions to adopt SA technologies remains limited. This study investigated how farmers’ knowledge and attitudes regarding SA affect their adoption of smart technologies in Taiwan. A total of 321 farmers participated in a survey in 2017 and 2018, and the data were used to construct an ordinary least squares regression model of SA adoption. This study provides a preliminary understanding of the relationship between psychological factors and innovation adoption of SA technologies in a small-scale farming economic context. The findings suggest that policymakers and research and development institutes should concentrate on improving market access to established and critical SA technologies.

Enhancing safety competencies of young adults: A randomized field trial (RCT)

INTRODUCTION

Young workers are exposed to various occupational hazards, often with limited experience and skills. In this study, we investigated the effects of the Attitude to Work Program on the safety competencies of young workers. Based on the social cognitive theory, the intervention was developed to help young people adopt an active role in preventing occupational hazards and overcoming barriers to safe work.

METHOD

The program was implemented in eight upper secondary-level vocational schools in Finland during 2015. A total of 464 students participated in the cluster randomized field trial. Those in the intervention group (n = 229) participated in the Attitude to Work Program. During the program, students identified and practiced behavioral strategies to prevent occupational hazards. Students in the control condition (n = 235) received written material about the same safety-related topics.

RESULTS

The short-term follow-up showed that the intervention significantly increased safety preparedness and the internal safety locus of control among the students in the intervention condition in comparison to those in the control condition. Students in the intervention condition also showed reduced risk-taking attitudes relative to those in the control condition. Furthermore, those who benefited most from the program were high conscientiousness students. The sensation-seeking level or vocational track did not moderate any of the intervention effects.

CONCLUSION

The results demonstrated that safety competencies can be modified by intervention techniques based on a social-cognitive framework.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

This study provides tools for school-based safety training and future intervention development. Further research is needed to study the relationships between cognitive factors, safety behavior, and accidents.

Protecting the planet and its people: how do interventions to promote environmental sustainability and occupational safety and health overlap?

PROBLEM

The challenges of both occupational safety and health and environmental sustainability require large-scale behavior change for meaningful improvements to occur. Environmental sustainability, or the 'green movement' has received far more attention recently, and certain strategies and recommendations from interventions designed for promoting pro-environmental behaviors may inform efforts to intervene on critical behaviors for improving occupational safety and health.

METHOD

A survey of the literature regarding behavioral interventions for both environmental sustainability and occupational safety and health was conducted. Several theoretical approaches are reviewed, and successful approaches from each domain are identified, as well as parallel challenges and points for crossover. Recommendations are provided for adapting environmental sustainability intervention approaches for occupational safety and health applications.

IMPACT ON INDUSTRY

Safety and health leaders may achieve sustainable improvements in worker safety and health by harnessing the momentum of the green movement and adapting successful intervention approaches from the environmental sustainability domain.

Targeting ergonomics interventions--learning from health promotion

Ergonomics often involves encouraging people to accept change, a process affected by their knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. This paper argues that ergonomics projects are likely to have greater success where formal account is taken of these characteristics, and interventions are tailored accordingly. Furthermore, it is suggested that ergonomics can usefully draw upon behaviour change models developed by those concerned with health promotion in the community. One influential model is Prochaska and DiClemente's (Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice, 19, 276-288, 1982) stage of change framework, which describes recipients of health information as progressing through six stages towards stable healthy behaviour: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse. This recognises the dynamic nature of behaviour change and that, both within and between individuals, responses may vary from failing to acknowledge existence of a health risk, to where something has already been done about it. Proponents of the model contend that interventions should seek to identify recipients' stage of change and target information and advice accordingly. It is proposed that Prochaska and DiClemente's approach might usefully inform ergonomics activities, particularly when advising with respect to health and safety (e.g. manual handling, upper limb disorders, fall risk, plant safety, etc.) but perhaps also where dealing with other ergonomics considerations (i.e. comfort and performance).
