Abstract
Proteins are required for biological functions and their inadequacy might impair the growth and development of the reproductive system. The study investigated the effects of fish oil (FO) supplementation on low-protein diet-induced alterations in male and female reproductive organs. Male and female rats were assigned randomly to four groups respectively. The NPD rats had five rats per group and were given 16% casein diet while the LPD rats had eight rats per group and received 5% casein diet. After the 8th week, FO was administered for 3 weeks via oral gavage at a concentration of 400mg Kg-1 after which the rats were sacrificed and testes and ovaries were excised. LPD-fed rats showed lower body weights for both genders. In LPD-fed rats, NO was significantly increased while GSH, vitamins C and E levels, the activities of CAT (except in ovaries), and GST were significantly reduced in both tissues. The activities of SOD and GPx were only reduced in the testes including sperm count, motility, and increase deformed sperm cells. Testosterone and progesterone levels were also reduced and lipid homeostasis was disrupted in the plasma of LPD-fed rats. FO supplementation reduces the NO, CHOL, TG, LDL (in females), and VLDL but significantly improves HDL (in females), testosterone, and progesterone levels, sperm count, motility, and morphology. The antioxidant status of both tissues also increased significantly in LPD-fed rats. Conclusively, FO might be effective in improving testicular and ovarian functions and for the maintenance of plasma lipid homeostasis in LPD-fed rats.

Abstract
Egg white intake during chemotherapy is common advice for cancer patients for the prevention of leukopenia. However, the benefit is uncertain. We conducted this prospective study to identify the relationship of egg white intake for gynecologic cancer patients who received carboplatin and paclitaxel and the occurrence of leukopenia. Between January 2014 and January, 2015, 81 patients were interviewed regarding their intake of egg whites before receiving subsequent chemotherapy. The basic data, the details of egg white intake and the grade of leukopenia in the previous cycle were recorded. The mean age was 54.1 years and 80% of the patients had a diagnosis of ovarian or endometrial cancer. The patients were interviewed at cycles 1-3 in 45 cases, 4-6 in 45 cases and 7-9 in two cases. Subsequent dose reduction was found in 6.2% and granulocyte-stimulating growth factors was given at 4.9%. All the patients ate egg whites with variations in the number of eggs per day as follows: less than one (3), one to two (56), three to four (14) and five to six (8). Over 70% were recommended by nurses to eat egg whites and about 63% of patients received other supplemental food. Some 44.1% of the patients who ate less than or equal to two eggs per day and 36.4% who ate more than two eggs per day developed grade 2-4 leukopenia, P = 0.61. In conclusion, the data did not provide evidence in support of the conclusion that a greater egg white intake could significantly reduce the occurrence of leukopenia.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to research the effect of feeding laying hens fish oil-supplemented diets to produce n-3-enriched eggs on their ovarian follicular development, serum lipid peroxidation, antioxidative status and immune response. A total of 105 white Bovens hens at 24 weeks of age were housed in cages in an open-sided building under a 16 h light : 8 h dark lighting schedule. Birds were randomly divided into five treatments and were fed, ad libitum, diets containing 0% (control), 1.25%, 2.5%, 3.5% or 5.0% fish oil from 24 to 36 weeks of age. Egg production and weight were recorded. By weeks 35 and 36 of age 15 eggs were taken at random from each treatment to determine the yolk lipid profile and cholesterol content. At the end of the experimental period, 10 females from each treatment were randomly chosen, anaesthetised and killed by decapitation. Ovary and oviduct samples were immediately weighted and ovarian follicles were classified. Serum thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS), hepatic TBARS and hepatic glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity were measured. No clear trend was observed concerning egg production and egg yolk cholesterol. As dietary fish oil levels increased, n-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) increased, whereas n-6 PUFA tended to decrease in yolk lipids. No negative effects were detected in ovary and oviduct weights, expressed in both absolute terms and relative to body weight. The numbers and total weights of large yellow follicles (LYF) in the ovary were not significantly affected by fish oil supplementation. Low levels (1.25% to 2.5%) of fish oil reduced both plasma and hepatic TBARS and enhanced GSH-Px activity. It is also interesting to note that inclusion of 2.5% fish oil in laying hen diets enhanced the antibody titre in laying hens. Therefore, it could be concluded that inclusion of fish oil in laying hen diets at moderate levels increased the n-3 fatty acids content in eggs, improved antioxidative status, enhanced the antibody response and did not have a negative influence on the different reproductive morphology parameters in laying hens.

Abstract
Elaidic acid (trans-9-C₁₈:₁ or trans-9) is assumed to exert atherogenic effects due to its double bond configuration. The possibility that trans-9 and vaccenic acid (trans-11-C₁₈:₁ or trans-11), its positional isomer, were biochemically equivalent and interchangeable compounds, was investigated by reference to their cis-isomers through esterification-related activities using rat liver cells and subcellular fractions. In hepatocytes, both trans-C₁₈:₁ were incorporated to the same extent in triacylglycerols, but trans-9 was more esterified than trans-11 into phospholipids (P < 0.05). Glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase activity in microsomes was lower with trans-11 than with trans-9, while this activity in mitochondria was ~40% greater with trans-11 than with trans-9 (P < 0.05). Activity of 2-lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase in microsomes was of comparable extent with both trans isomers, but activity of 2-lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase was significantly greater with trans-9 than with trans-11 at P < 0.01. Lipoproteins secreted by hepatocytes reached equivalent levels in the presence of any isomers, but triacylglycerol production was more elevated with trans-11 than with trans-9 at P < 0.05. Cholesterol efflux from previously labelled hepatocytes was lower with trans-11 than with trans-9. When these cells were exposed to either trans-C₁₈:₁, the gene expression of proteins involved in fatty acid esterification and lipoprotein synthesis was unaffected, which indicates that the biochemical differences essentially depended on enzyme/substrate affinities. On the whole, vaccenic and elaidic acid were shown to incorporate cell phospholipids unequally, at least in vitro, which suggests they can differently affect lipid metabolic pathways in normal cells.

Abstract
Vaccenic acid (trans-11-C(18:1)) chemically resembles elaidic acid (trans-9-C(18:1)) which is assumed to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and thus could exert similar effects. Possible different oxidation rates of vaccenic versus elaidic acid were checked in muscles and liver, and through related gene expression in normal rat liver cells. In hepatic mitochondria, carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) I exhibited comparable activity rates with both trans-isomers. CPT II activity was 30% greater (P < 0.05) with vaccenic than with elaidic acid as nonesterified fatty acids (NEFAs) or acyl-CoAs. Activity of the first beta-oxidation step was similar between the isomers in all the tissue slices and liver extracts assayed. Respiration rates were comparable with both trans-isomers as NEFAs in various liver extracts, but were 30% greater (P < 0.05) with vaccenoyl-CoA than with elaidoyl-CoA in liver mitochondria. Vaccenic acid was oxidised 25% more (P < 0.05) by liver peroxisomes than elaidic acid. In hepatocytes cultured with trans- and corresponding cis-C(18:1) isomers, gene expression of CPT I, hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase and hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase was at least 100% increased (P < 0.05), but was unchanged with vaccenic acid, relative to controls. In conclusion, the position and geometry of the double bonds in acyl chains are suggested to confer on vaccenic and elaidic acid specific biochemical properties that might differently affect their fates in tissues.

Abstract
With the aim of investigating whether cholesterol oxidation products could contribute to the pathogenesis of the intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction that occurs in human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), differentiated versus undifferentiated CaCo-2 cells, an accepted model for human intestinal epithelial cells, were challenged with a dietary-representative mixture of oxysterols. Only differentiated colonic cells were susceptible to the proapoptotic action of the oxysterol mixture, checked both by enzymatic and by morphological methods, mainly because of a very low AKT phosphorylation pathway compared to the undifferentiated counterparts. Enhanced production of reactive oxygen species by a colonic NADPH oxidase hyperactivation seemed to represent the key event in oxysterol-induced up-regulation of the mitochondrial pathway of programmed death of differentiated CaCo-2 cells. These in vitro findings point to the pro-oxidant and cytotoxic potential of cholesterol oxidation products, of both dietary and endogenous origin, as an important mechanism of induction and/or worsening of the functional impairment of enteric mucosa that characterizes IBD.

Abstract
Manufacturers use the process of hydrogenation to create trans fats in order to increase the shelf life of baked and fried foods. Ingestion of trans fats is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A groundswell of public sentiment is causing regulatory bodies to ban the use of trans fats in foods. Alternatives to trans fats are needed now in order to preserve the freshness and provide an appealing texture of many packaged foods. As trans fats become phased out, there are eight types of approaches currently being developed to substitute for these fats as ingredients for baked and fried foods: (1) modified hydrogenation, (2) genetically modified seeds, (3) interesterification, (4) fractionation and blending, (5) butter and animal fat, (6) natural saturated oils, (7) natural unsaturated oils, and (8) fat substitutes. These alternatives to trans fats will require close scrutiny to ascertain whether they will also turn out to be linked with cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary Kazunoko (salted herring roe) lipids, which contain large amounts of cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), on lipid and glucose metabolism in mice. Male Crlj:CD-1 (ICR) mice were fed one of four experimental diets which contained 6% lard, 1% Kazunoko lipids + 5% lard, 3% Kazunoko lipids + 3% lard, and 6% Kazunoko lipids for 12 weeks. Plasma total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, phospholipid, and glucose concentrations were significantly lower in the 3% and 6% Kazunoko lipid diet groups than in lard and 1% Kazunoko lipid diet groups (p < 0.05). Plasma adiponectin concentrations of mice fed the 6% Kazunoko lipid diet were higher than those of animals fed the lard diet group. These results suggest that EPA and DHA rather than cholesterol in the Kazunoko lipids influence the plasma total cholesterol level. The constituent Kazunoko lipids may not only decrease the levels of plasma lipids but also decrease glucose concentrations by enhancing plasma adiponectin levels in mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Effects of the dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and fish oil on weekly changes in plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid concentrations of male Crlj:CD-1 mice were investigated. METHOD Animals were fed five different experimental diets which contained 6.0% lard (lard diet), 6.0% fish oil (fish oil diet), 1.5% DHA-ethyl ester+4.5% lard (DHA diet), 0.4% EPA-ethyl ester+5.6% lard (EPA diet), and 1.5% DHA-ethyl ester+0.4% EPA ethyl ester+4.1% lard (DHA+EPA diet) for 17 weeks. Glucose and lipid concentrations in plasma collected at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 16 were measured. RESULTS Plasma phospholipid concentrations were significantly lower in mice fed the fish oil and DHA+EPA diets than in those fed the lard diet at week 2. Plasma total cholesterol and glucose concentrations were significantly lower in the fish oil diet group than in the lard diet group at weeks 6 and 8, respectively. CONCLUSION These results indicate that the decreases in plasma glucose concentrations in response to intakes of DHA and EPA in mice take place over a longer period of time than similar decreases in the plasma lipid concentrations.
