Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose was to compare the effects of rapid (3 s) and conventional (20 s) polymerization protocols (PP) of mono- and multichip LED curing units (LCU) on shrinkage stress (SS) and monomer elution (ME) in bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBC) with and without addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (AFCT) monomer. METHODS Cylindrical (5x4mm) specimens were prepared from two RBCs containing different AFCT monomers (Filtek OneBulk-FOB; Tetric PowerFill-TPF) and one without (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk-TEC). After soaking for 3, 10, and 14 days (75 % ethanol), ME was quantified using standard monomers by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. SS was measured from the start of polymerization to 5 min using a Materials Testing Machine. The radiant exitance of LCUs was measured using a spectrophotometer. ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, multivariate analysis and partial eta-squared statistics were used to analyze the data (p < 0.05). RESULTS AFCT-modification significantly decreased ME (p < 0.001). ME was reduced by half by day 10 and by one tenth by the end of the 14-day compared to the 3-day sampling. ME itself was dependent, whereas the percentage of monomers released was independent of the PP used (p > 0.05). FOB showed the lowest SS (p < 0.001), while there was no significant difference between TPF and TEC (p = 0.124). Both ME and SS were significantly influenced by material type and PP. SIGNIFICANCE The incorporation of the AFCT monomer reduced ME, but this was inversely related to a decrease in exposure time. SS values reduced by rapid PP in parallel with increasing ME values. The utilization of the AFCT molecule in conjunction with an appropriate resin-, initiator-system is of significant consequence for the kinetics of polymerization and the incorporation of monomers into the network.

The influence of different placement techniques on the clinical success of bulk-fill resin composites placed in Class II cavities: a 4-year randomized controlled clinical study. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this double-blind and split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical success of the placement technique (bulk-filling and incremental techniques) of a bulk-fill resin composite in Class II carious lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two different bulk-fill resin composites, X-tra fil (Voco) and Filtek Bulk Fill (3M ESPE), were used in the bulk-filling and incremental techniques for 20 patients. The study was carried out in 4 groups, with 20 restorations in each group. Restorations were appraised at baseline, 6-month, 2-year, and 4-year recall. World Dental Federation (FDI) and the US Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria were used in the evaluations. The Friedman, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS At the end of year 4, there was no loss of restoration in any group. According to the USPHS and FDI criteria, there was a difference in the baseline and 4-year in marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration of the restorations (P < 0.05). When Filtek-Bulk was placed as an incremental technique, there was a minor fracture in four restorations (P > 0.05). In addition, Filtek-Bulk showed a color change according to the results based on both the USPHS and FDI criteria (P < 0.05). The difference between the two placement techniques of each resin composite was not significant at the year 4 recall when all criteria were evaluated (P ˃ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The 4-year clinical success of the evaluated bulk-fill composites is not dependent on the placement technique used. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study can help clinicians choose which technique (bulk fill and incremental techniques) bulk-fill composites can be used. Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of topical fluoride applications on the release of monomer ingredients from resin-based dental materials by immersion in various extraction solutions are unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of topical fluorides (APF and NaF) on the elution of residual monomers (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, UDMA, and HEMA) from resin-based materials. METHODS Ninety specimens were prepared, 30 bulk-fill composite resin, 30 nanohybrid universal composite resin, and 30 polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer). These were randomly divided into three groups based on fluoride application procedures. Each specimen was kept in 75% ethanol solution, and residual monomers released from materials were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after 10 min, 1 h, 24 h, and 30 days. The groups were compared using the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests. Measurements were analyzed using the Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. RESULTS Fluoride applications generally had no considerable effect on the amount of residual monomer released from resin-based restorative materials. The amount of monomer release after topical APF application was similar to the release in the control group and was lower than the release in the NaF group. The release of monomers from the resin-based material used in the study did not approach toxic levels at the applied time intervals. The compomer released lower amounts of monomer than other resin-based materials. CONCLUSIONS Fluoride applications do not increase monomer release from resin-based restorative materials. However, compomers should be employed by clinicians due to their lower monomer release compared to other resin restorative materials. The release of monomers from all the resin-based materials did not approach toxic levels at the applied time intervals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Resin-based materials are applied in every branch of dentistry. Due to their tendency to release substances in the oral environment, doubts have been raised about their actual safety. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the last decade literature regarding the concentrations of elutable substances released from dental resin-based materials in different type of solvents. MATERIALS AND METHODS All the literature published on dental journals between January 2010 and April 2022 was searched using international databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science). Due to strict inclusion criteria, only 23 papers out of 877 were considered eligible. The concentration of eluted substances related to surface and volume of the sample was analyzed, considering data at 24 h as a reference. The total cumulative release was examined as well. RESULTS The most eluted substances were HEMA, TEGDMA, and BPA, while the less eluted were Bis-GMA and UDMA. Organic solvents caused significantly higher release of substances than water-based ones. A statistically significant inverse correlation between the release of molecules and their molecular mass was observed. A statistically significant positive correlation between the amount of released molecule and the specimen surface area was detected, as well as a weak positive correlation between the release and the specimen volume. CONCLUSIONS Type of solvent, molecular mass of eluates, and specimen surface and volume affect substances release from materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE It could be advisable to rely on materials based on monomers with a reduced elution tendency for clinical procedures.

Abstract
Detection of unreacted monomers from pre-heated resin-based dental composites (RBC) is not a well-investigated topic so far. The objectives were to determine the temperature changes during the application and polymerization, the degree of conversion (DC) and unreacted monomer elution of room temperature (RT), and pre-heated thermoviscous [VisCalor Bulk(VCB)] and high-viscosity full-body contemporary [Filtek One Bulk(FOB)] bulk-fill RBCs. The RBCs' temperatures during the sample preparation were recorded with a K-type thermocouple. The DC at the top and bottom was measured with micro-Raman spectroscopy and the amounts of eluted BisGMA, UDMA, DDMA, and TEGDMA were assessed with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. The temperatures of the pre-heated RBCs decreased rapidly during the manipulation phase. The temperature rise during photopolymerization reflects the bottom DCs. The differences in DC% between the top and the bottom were significant. RT VCB had a lower DC% compared to FOB. Pre-heating did not influence the DC, except on the bottom surface of FOB where a significant decrease was measured. Pre-heating significantly decreased the elution of BisGMA, UDMA, DDMA in the case of FOB, meanwhile, it had no effect on monomer release from VCB, except TEGDMA, which elution was decreased. In comparison, RBC composition had a stronger influence on DC and monomer elution, than pre-cure temperature.

Abstract
Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the Knoop hardness (KH), cross-link density (CLD), water sorption (WS), water solubility (WSB), and volumetric shrinkage (VS) of experimental resins blends containing a monomethacrylate with low-polymerization shrinkage.
Materials and Methods
A blend of bisphenol glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA) as base monomer was formulated with (Bis-GMA)/triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), Bis-GMA/isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA), or Bis-GMA/TEGDMA/IBOMA in different concentrations (40, 50, or 60 wt%). The camphorquinone (CQ)/2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was used as the photoinitiator system. The KH and CLD were measured at the top surface using an indenter. . The samples were transferred to desiccators until a constant mass was obtained (m1) and were subsequently immersed in distilled water until no alteration in mass was detected (m2). The samples were reconditioned to constant mass in desiccators (m3). WS and WSB were determined using the equations m2 − m3/V and m1 − m3/V, respectively. VS results were calculated with the density parameters before and after curing.
Statistical Analysis
Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05).
Results
The resins containing IBOMA showed lower VS results. TEGDMA 40% and TEGDMA/IBOMA 20/20 wt% showed higher KH values. The IBOMA groups showed lower CLD, while TEGDMA groups had higher values of CLD. The BisGMA/TEGDMA resin presented the highest values of WS, and for WSB, all groups showed no significant differences among themselves.
Conclusion
The monomethacrylate with low-polymerization shrinkage IBOMA used alone or in combination with TEGDMA may decrease VS, WS, and CLD values.
