Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose was to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC), internal adaptation (IA) and closed porosity (CP) of short-fiber reinforced resin composites (SFRC) associated with layered or bulk restorative procedures in deep MOD cavities. METHODS Eighty third molars with standardized MOD cavities (5-mm-depth, 2.5-mm-width) were randomly divided into four groups and restored as follows: 1) bulk SFRC; 2) layered SFRC; 3) flowable bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBC); 4) layered conventional RBC. After one-month wet storage the samples were subjected to micro-computed tomography measurements and scanning electron microscopy to assess the IA and CP. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the DC in different depths. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, multivariate analysis and partial eta-squared statistics (p < 0.05). Pearson correlation coefficient was determined to assess the relationship among the parameters of interest. RESULTS Gap/total interface volume ratio ranged between 0.22-0.47%. RBCs applied in bulk revealed significantly lower gap volume (p < 0.001) and CP (p < 0.05). Each group showed complete detachment on the pulpal and partial on the lateral walls, except for group3. While the highest DC% was achieved by the conventional RBC (87.2%), followed by the flowable bulk-fill (81.2%), SFRC provided the best bottom to top DC ratio (bulk: 96.4%, layered: 98.7%). The effect of factors studied (RBC type, filling technique) on IA and DC was significant (p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE Bulk placement of RBCs exhibited lower interfacial gap volume and achieved satisfactory DC without significant correlation between these parameters. Incremental insertion of SFRC had no advantage over bulk placement in terms of IA and DC.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the polymerization efficiency of a preheated resin composite used as a luting agent for indirect restorations light-cured by a blue diode laser (445 nm). METHODS Bronze molds were used to prepare cylindrical specimens of a laboratory composite (Ceramage) with dimensions 2, 3, and 4 mm in height and 8 mm in diameter. The molds had additional height of 120 μm for the placement of the preheated resin composite. A nanohybrid resin composite (Enamel Plus HRi) was preheated at 55°C to use as a luting agent. Photopolymerization was followed for 20 seconds using three light sources: a diode laser emitting at 445 nm (SiroLaser Blue) and two light-emitting diode (LED) units (Bluephase Style and Valo). Degree of conversion (DC) of the preheated resin composite was evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. RESULTS The results indicated that the main effects of the analysis were significant for both material thickness (p<0.001) and polymerization method (p<0.001). The preheated resin composite was not polymerized under 4-mm-thick specimens, independent of the light-curing unit. For 2-mm material thickness, there was no difference among the three light-curing units (p=0.383), while 3-mm Bluephase Style presented very low DC. CONCLUSIONS Diode laser (445 nm) achieved better polymerization efficiency at the same fluence compared to the LED unit at 3-mm depth, implying a better mechanical behavior and potential improved adhesion of the luting material to dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate the effect of thickness of high-translucency (HT) CAD/CAM materials on irradiance and beam profile from a blue light-emitting diode light-curing unit (LCU) and on the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum polymerization rate (Rpmax ) of a light-cured resin cement (LCC). MATERIAL AND METHODS The direct output from the LCU, the light transmission and irradiance ratio (IR) through one conventional composite and nine HT CAD/CAM materials (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0-mm thick; n = 5) were measured with a integrating sphere coupled to a spectrometer. The light beam was assessed with a beam profiler camera. The DC at 600 s and the Rpmax of one LCC was determined using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (n = 5). Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey's tests, and Dunnett's test was also used for irradiance data (α = 0.05). RESULTS A significant decrease in irradiance through all materials occurred as thickness increased. Thin CAD/CAM materials improved light homogeneity, which decreased with the increase in thickness. The DC of the LCC directly exposed to light was the same as when exposed to 45%, 25%, 15%, or 5% IRs. Rpmax decreased with the decrease in IR. CONCLUSIONS Although the HT CAD/CAM materials reduced the irradiance from the LCU, minor effects were observed in the LCC's DC. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Despite the light attenuation of blue light through different CAD/CAM materials that were up to 2-mm thick, the degree of conversion of one brand of light-cured resin cement was clinically acceptable when the LCU was used for 30 s.

Abstract
Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a promising tool in biomedical analysis and clinical diagnosis. The development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) improved the detection limit with ultrahigh sensitivity and simplicity. More and more Raman spectroscopy clinical trials (R-PCT) have been conducted recently. However, there is a lack of an up-to-date review summarizing the current status of Raman clinical trials performed until now. Hence, the clinical trials for Raman were retrieved from the International Clinical Trials Registration Platform. We summarized the clinical characteristics of 55 registered Raman spectroscopy clinical trials (R-RSCTs) and 44 published Raman spectroscopy clinical trials (P-RSCTs). This review could assist researchers and clinicians to understand the current status of Raman spectroscopy clinical research and perhaps could benefit the reasonable and accurate design of future SERS studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effect of different polymerization modes and duration on the degree of conversion (DC) of resin cement under different types of ceramics. METHODS Ceramic materials were divided into 3 groups (N.=60): group 1, Cerasmart; group 2, Vita Enamic; and group 3, Vita Mark II. Each group was then divided into three subgroups (N.=20) according to the polymerization mode (A: low-intensity; B: high-intensity; and C: soft-start). Subgroups were then divided into two further groups according to the polymerization time (I: 10 s; and II: 20 s). DC of light-cured resin cement beneath different kinds of ceramics was tested using FTIR spectroscopy. Results were compared to a control group cured without overlying ceramic. RESULTS While the type of ceramic and mode of polymerization showed a significant effect on the DC of resin cement, polymerization duration did not. Vita Mark II group showed the highest DC of resin cement followed by Vita Enamic and Cerasmart. High- and low-intensity polymerization modes did not show significant difference, but both showed significantly lower DC when compared to soft start mode. CONCLUSIONS Type of ceramic and polymerization mode showed a direct effect on the DC of resin cement.

Abstract
The study was aimed to investigate a color indicator containing dual curing resin composite luting cement and to plot the color change to the time of solidification of the cement. In addition some physical properties were studied. Specimens were made of a dual-cure resin cement (Maxcem Elite™ Chroma, Kerr, Orange, CA, USA) and polymerized by autopolymerization only, or with light initiated polymerization. A spectrophotometer was used to quantify the color change of the cement as plotted with the curing time. The efficacy of the curing process was studied by measuring water sorption and the ultimate flexural properties of the cement. The results showed that the flexural strength of cement after autopolymerization was 27.3 MPa and after light initiated polymerization 48.1 MPa. Young’s modulus of bending was 2089.3 MPa and 3781.5 MPa respectively for the same cement samples. Water sorption after two weeks for the autopolymerization cement samples was −1.12 wt% and for the light initiated polymerization samples 0.56 wt%. Non-parametric Spearman’s correlation was measured for autopolymerized cement samples between variables for color and solidification load (N), which showed a strong correlation between curing process and color change (p < 0.05). There was a correlation between the color change and degree of monomer conversion of the dual curing resin composite luting cement which contained a color indicator system for polymerization reaction. The study also suggested that autopolymerization only resulted in suboptimal polymerization of the cement. By additional light curing considerably higher flexural properties were obtained.

Abstract
Objectives The aim was to compare cytotoxicity/genotoxicity of pre-heated composites polymerized through CAD/CAM overlays on isolated human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Material and Methods A microhybrid (Z100, 3M ESPE) and nanofilled composite (Filtek Supreme Ultra, 3M ESPE) were heated in a heating unit (Calset, AdDent Inc.) at different temperatures: 37 oC, 54 oC, and 68 oC. A small amount of heated composite was placed in a cylindrical mold (6mm diameter; 0.65mm thick), covered with a Mylar sheet, pressed and light-cured directly and through 2 mm thick CAD/CAM ceramic-reinforced polymer (CRP)(LAVA Ultimate, 3M ESPE) or CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC)(e.max, Ivoclar/Vivadent) overlay. After curing, the specimens were immediately placed in a prepared lymphocyte cell culture. Cytotoxicity was assessed using a dye exclusion method by simultaneous staining with ethidium bromide and acridine orange, aimed to determine percentages of viable, apoptotic and necrotic cells. Genotoxicity was studied using alkaline comet assay. Results For Z100, the highest percentage of viable cells is recorded at T1 (93.7%) after direct light curing, followed by light curing through CRP (92.3%) and through LDC (91.7%T1,T3). For Filtek Supreme Ultra, the highest percentage of viable cells is recorded while curing through CRP (91.0% T2), followed by LDC (90% T1,T3) and direct light curing (88.7%T2). Conclusion For both tested materials, preheating the procedure at T1 and T2 may be the procedure of choice. In terms of genotoxicity, preheating at T3 may not be suggested.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Due to increasing of aesthetic demand, ceramic crowns are widely used in different situations. However, to obtain long-term prognosis of restorations, a good conversion of resin cement is necessary. To evaluate the degree of conversion (DC) of one light-cure and two dual-cure resin cements under a simulated clinical cementation of ceramic crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS Prepared teeth were randomly split according to the ceramic's material, resin cement and curing protocol. The crowns were cemented as per manufacturer's directions and photoactivated either from occlusal suface only for 60 s; or from the buccal, occlusal and lingual surfaces, with an exposure time of 20 s on each aspect. After cementation, the specimens were stored in deionized water at 37°C for 7 days. Specimens were transversally sectioned from occlusal to cervical surfaces and the DC was determined along the cement line with three measurements taken and averaged from the buccal, lingual and approximal aspects using micro-Raman spectroscopy (Alpha 300R/WITec®). Data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey test at =5%. RESULTS Statistical analysis showed significant differences among cements, curing protocols and ceramic type (p<0.001). The curing protocol 3x20 resulted in higher DC for all tested conditions; lower DC was observed for Zr ceramic crowns; Duolink resin cement culminated in higher DC regardless ceramic composition and curing protocol. CONCLUSION The DC of resin cement layers was dependent on the curing protocol and type of ceramic.

Abstract
During the cementation of ceramic veneers the polymerization of resin cements may be jeopardized if the ceramics attenuate the irradiance of the light-curing device. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different types and thicknesses of ceramic veneers on the degree of conversion of a light-cured resin-based cement (RelyX Veneer). The cement was light-cured after interposing ceramic veneers [IPS InLine, IPS Empress Esthetic, IPS e.max LT (low translucency) and IPS e.max HT (high translucency) - Ivoclar Vivadent] of four thicknesses (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm). As control, the cement was light-cured without interposition of ceramics. The degree of conversion was evaluated by FTIR spectroscopy (n=5). Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Significant differences were observed among groups (p<0.001). The degree of conversion was similar to the control for all light-cured groups with interposition of ceramics of 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm (p>0.05). Among 1.5-mm-thick veneers, IPS e.max LT was the only one that showed different results from the control (p<0.05). At the thickness of 2.0 mm, only the IPS e.max LT and HT veneers were able to produce cements with degrees of conversion similar to the control (p>0.05). The degree of conversion of the evaluated light-cured resin cement depends on the thickness and type of ceramics employed when veneers thicker than 1.5 mm are cemented.
