The canine furcation cyst, a newly defined odontogenic cyst in dogs: 20 cases (2013-2017)

Clinical and histopathological study of 279 dentigerous cysts in 192 dogs (2012-2022)

Unerupted teeth in dogs are fairly common and may develop an odontogenic cyst that causes destruction of the surrounding bone and affect adjacent teeth. We analyzed histological reports of cysts associated with unerupted teeth in a large population of dogs. Medical records and histopathological results of cysts associated with unerupted teeth were evaluated from all dogs treated at a private referral veterinary dental clinic over a 10-year period (2012-2022). A total of 192 dogs with 279 cysts associated with one or more unerupted teeth were included in the study. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented. The most affected were Tibetan Spaniels with 58 dogs (30%) and Boxers with 48 dogs (25%). The most common affected tooth was the mandibular first premolar tooth with 238 (84%) cysts. Of the total of 279 cysts, 208 (75%) were histopathologically examined. None of the cysts examined contained malignant changes. Based on these 208 cysts, the probability of finding a cyst with malignant changes in a population of dogs is 0-1.4% (confidence interval 95%).

Maxillary Aneurysmal Bone Cyst in a Young Dog-A Case Report

This case report describes an aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla of a young dog. It describes the clinical presentation, diagnostics, management, and successful outcome of this highly unusual case. Bone cysts are described as benign, cavitated lesions within bone that are lined by reactive tissues. There is no epithelial lining in the lesions. Bone cysts usually contain hemorrhage or serosanguinous fluid. They usually appear in the long bones, and present as a swelling with or without pain.

[Nasal obstruction: Odontogenic cysts in 4 brachycephalic dogs]

OBJECTIVE

Odontogenic cysts may be of developmental or inflammatory origin. They are frequently observed in brachycephalic dogs. Due to their expansive growth, cysts in the maxilla may extend into the nasal cavity, obstruct the nasal airway and cause nasal discharge. Epithelial cysts may lead to a comparable clinical picture. A new endonasal endoscopic intervention for the removal of these cysts is described.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Four brachycephalic dogs (Boxer, Chihuahua, French bulldog, Pug) with unilateral cysts obstructing the nasal cavity were included in the study. The animals underwent clinical examination, computed tomography (CT) imaging and rhinoscopy examination. Histopathologic evaluation of the cyst wall was performed. In addition to dental surgery and conventional extraction of the involved tooth, the cyst wall was removed by endoscopic intervention via the physiologic nasal opening. Clinical course following treatment was assessed by rhinoscopy and CT.

RESULTS

The main clinical signs were unilateral or bilateral serous to hemorrhagic nasal discharge. Nasal airflow was restricted in all patients. Removal of the cysts and involved teeth did not lead to any intra- and postoperative complications. No recurrence of the cysts was observed. Histologic diagnosis consisted of an epidermoid cyst, a follicular cyst, a radicular cyst, and a canine odontogenic parakeratinized cyst (COPC). Neoplastic transformation was excluded in all cases.

CONCLUSIONS

Removal of the cyst wall may be performed by means of minimally invasive endoscopic intervention via the physiologic nasal entrance. The procedure is curative and carries the risk of only few complications. In cases in which treatment is restricted to extraction of the affected tooth, the nasal airway may remain obstructed due to a calcified cyst wall.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

In brachycephalic dogs, oronasal defects due to dental pathology are the most common reason for chronic nasal discharge, whereas in normocephalic dogs nasal neoplasia are. Odontogenic cysts carry importance as differential diagnosis of nasal discharge.

Clinical, Radiographic and Histologic Evaluation of 40 Cystic Oral Lesions in 37 Cats

Feline cystic oral lesions are uncommon and include odontogenic cysts and cystic odontogenic tumors. Accurate diagnosis requires close collaboration between the clinician's clinical and radiographic findings and the pathologist's histologic interpretations. The odontogenic cysts identified in this series include a periapical cyst, dentigerous cysts and a type of unclassified collateral cyst that appears to be a previously undefined, distinct entity in cats (UCC). Many of the cysts (52%) were unable to be classified due to insufficient diagnostic information, which often related to the associated tooth being unavailable for evaluation. Cystic odontogenic tumors included ameloblastomas, amyloid producing ameloblastomas (APA), and feline inductive odontogenic tumors (FIOT). The purpose of this case series was to assess correlations between clinical and radiographic findings, histopathologic interpretation and signalment to identify common characteristics and provide recommendations for clinicians and pathologists to optimize diagnostic efficiency and accuracy for cystic oral lesions in cats.

Characterization and Classification of Keratinized Odontogenic Cysts in 29 Dogs

This retrospective case series presents a unique group of odontogenic cysts that are lined by heavily keratinized epithelium and contain laminated keratin. Keratinized odontogenic cyst (KOC) is proposed as appropriate terminology for the described lesions. The series evaluates cysts from 29 dogs, including clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging, and histopathology. All 29 lesions occurred in tooth bearing regions of the jaws; 21 were maxillary and 8 were mandibular. These keratinized odontogenic cysts were unilocular or multilocular, and some demonstrated considerable expansion resulting in bone destruction. In 13 of 29 cases, there was evidence of tooth displacement associated with the expansion of the KOC. The KOCs did not have a distinctive radiographic appearance. 48% of the cysts had a soft tissue defect through which the keratin contents could be visualized. Cyst contents ranged from hard mineralized keratin to fluid consistency with soft flecks of keratin. The pathoetiology of KOCs is unknown; however, the biological behavior is benign and thought to be slowly progressive despite potential for locally destructive growth. Recurrence is uncommon when cyst enucleation and debridement are aggressive or when solid cysts are excised en bloc.

Management of Severe Oral Inflammatory Conditions in Dogs and Cats

Severe oral inflammatory disease is not uncommon in the mouths of canine and feline patients. An approach to oral diagnosis is offered. This article discusses a brief review of important points in the oral diagnosis and management of main canine (canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CCUS), eosinophilic stomatitis, and Wegener's granulomatosis (WG)) and feline diseases (feline gingivostomatitis/caudal stomatitis, oral eosinophilic lesions, pyogenic granuloma, and autoimmune diseases with oral manifestations), and-whereby possible-information about the current understanding of disease pathogenesis and treatment is offered.
