How Living in Vulnerable Conditions Undermines Cognitive Development: Evidence from the Pediatric Population of Guatemala

Low-socioeconomic backgrounds represent a risk factor for children’s cognitive development and well-being. Evidence from many studies highlights that cognitive processes may be adversely affected by vulnerable contexts. The aim of this study was to determine if living in vulnerable conditions affects childhood cognitive development. To achieve this, we assessed the performance of a sample of 347 Guatemalan children and adolescents aged from 6 to 17 years (M = 10.8, SD = 3) in a series of 10 neuropsychological tasks recently standardized for the pediatric population of this country. Two-fifths of the sample (41.5%) could be considered to have vulnerable backgrounds, coming from families with low-socioeconomic status or having had a high exposure to violence. As expected, results showed lower scores in language and attention for the vulnerable group. However, contrary to expectations, consistent systematic differences were not found in the executive function tasks. Vulnerable children obtained lower scores in cognitive flexibility compared to the non-vulnerable group, but higher scores in inhibition and problem-solving tasks. These results suggest the importance of developing pediatric standards of cognitive performance that take environmental vulnerable conditions into consideration. These findings, one of the first obtained in the Guatemalan population, also provide relevant information for specific educational interventions and public health policies which will enhance vulnerable children and adolescent cognitive development.

The family, neuroscience, and academic skills: An interdisciplinary account of social class gaps in children's test scores

Current explanations of social class gaps in children's early academic skills tend to focus on non-cognitive skills that more advantaged children acquire in the family. Accordingly, social class matters because the cultural resources more abundant in advantaged families cultivate children's repertories and tool kits, which allow them to more easily navigate social institutions, such as schools. Within these accounts, parenting practices matter for children's academic success, but for seemingly arbitrary reasons. Alternatively, findings from current neuroscience research indicate that family context matters for children because it cultivates neural networks that assist in learning and the development of academic skills. That is, children's exposure to particular parenting practices and stimulating home environments contribute to the growth in neurocognitive skills that affect later academic performance. We synthesize sociological and neuroscience accounts of developmental inequality by focusing on one such skill-fine motor skills-to illustrate how family context alters children's early academic performance. Our findings support an interdisciplinary account of academic inequality, and extend current accounts of the family's role in the transmission of social inequality.

Nutritional and socioeconomic factors in motor development of Santal children of the Purulia district, India

AIMS

The aim of this study was to characterize the motor development of 5-12 year-old Santal children of the Purulia district of West Bengal, India. The effect of socioeconomic and nutritional status on motor development was also examined.

STUDY DESIGN

841 (427 boys and 414 girls) Santal children were examined in this cross-sectional study. The nutritional status of each child was assessed by height-for-age z-score based on WHO reference data. Socioeconomic status (SES) was measured by the updated Kuppusswami scale. Motor development was measured using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-Second Edition, Short Form (BOT-2).

RESULTS

Sex had a significant (p<0.05) effect on children's score of running speed and agility, upper-limb coordination and strength with higher scores for boys than girls. Children with a height-for-age z-score of -2 or less were significantly more likely to have a total BOT-2 z-score of -2 or less compared with children at a healthier height-for-age range (Χ(2)=271.136, p<0.0001). Well-nourished children scored significantly higher (p<0.05) than undernourished children in total BOT-2 score and in all individual motor subtests. Regression analysis showed that nutritional status, socioeconomic status and height have a significant impact on total BOT-2 score (p<0.001). Age and sex were found to be influencing factors in motor development.

CONCLUSION

Santal children's motor proficiency is around the 1st percentile when compared with normative BOT-2 data. This may be, in part, a result of nutritional and economic disparities between children on who the BOT-2 was normed and Santal children, supporting the role of nutrition in motor development. Additionally, Santal children with lower SES and poorer nutritional status have lower motor proficiency compared with Santal children with comparatively higher SES and nutritional status.

Interlimb coordination differentiates Brazilian children from two socioeconomic settings

BACKGROUND

The aim of the present study was to test the notion that Brazilian children entering private school have a motor function advantage over those entering their first year in public school.

METHODS

Four hundred and two children from the two cultural settings were examined for motor function in the first and 10th month of school (first grade). Participants were assessed based on age-level standards and by total score for all items for children 3 to 7 years of age.

RESULTS

The private school group outperformed their public setting peers on the first and second assessment; both groups improved over the school year. The most interesting outcome was the type of motor task that most clearly differentiated the groups: activities requiring gross motor (interlimb) coordination.

CONCLUSION

Among the recommendations given, it is suggested that motor skill activities, especially those involving interlimb coordination, be included with any type of motor programming for young children.
