Effectiveness of a field-type liquid cooling vest for reducing heat strain while wearing protective clothing

Application of the thermoelectric cooling system in making a cooling belt: A case of heat stress control measure device

BACKGROUND

Climate change and global warming are emerging as new challenges worldwide. The World Meteorological Organization has reported that the temperature is expected to rise by an average of 1.2°C between 2021-2025. This increase in temperature will expose more and more workers to extreme heat.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore the possibility of using thermoelectric coolers for cooling the water circulation circuit of a cooling belt, which can be used for extended periods in high-temperature environments.

METHODS

A cooling belt was designed using thermoelectric coolers (TEC) and two blowers. The TECs were equipped with heat sinks and heat exchange block made of aluminum at hot and cold sides to exchange heat effectively.

RESULTS

The experiment was conducted under actual environmental temperature conditions during three different time periods, with mean temperatures of 31, 48, and 41°C. The mean temperature of the belt section was recorded as 20.73, 24.52, and 21.38°C, respectively. The maximum average difference between the inlet air temperature and the inside cooling belt temperature was 40.45°C.

CONCLUSION

The experiment revealed that the cooling performance of the designed prototype remained within an acceptable range (18°C) despite the increase in ambient temperature. Moreover, the cooling system can be utilized in high-heat environments to reduce thermal stress.

A century of exercise physiology: concepts that ignited the study of human thermoregulation. Part 3: Heat and cold tolerance during exercise

In this third installment of our four-part historical series, we evaluate contributions that shaped our understanding of heat and cold stress during occupational and athletic pursuits. Our first topic concerns how we tolerate, and sometimes fail to tolerate, exercise-heat stress. By 1900, physical activity with clothing- and climate-induced evaporative impediments led to an extraordinarily high incidence of heat stroke within the military. Fortunately, deep-body temperatures > 40 °C were not always fatal. Thirty years later, water immersion and patient treatments mimicking sweat evaporation were found to be effective, with the adage of cool first, transport later being adopted. We gradually acquired an understanding of thermoeffector function during heat storage, and learned about challenges to other regulatory mechanisms. In our second topic, we explore cold tolerance and intolerance. By the 1930s, hypothermia was known to reduce cutaneous circulation, particularly at the extremities, conserving body heat. Cold-induced vasodilatation hindered heat conservation, but it was protective. Increased metabolic heat production followed, driven by shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis, even during exercise and work. Physical endurance and shivering could both be compromised by hypoglycaemia. Later, treatments for hypothermia and cold injuries were refined, and the thermal after-drop was explained. In our final topic, we critique the numerous indices developed in attempts to numerically rate hot and cold stresses. The criteria for an effective thermal stress index were established by the 1930s. However, few indices satisfied those requirements, either then or now, and the surviving indices, including the unvalidated Wet-Bulb Globe-Thermometer index, do not fully predict thermal strain.

Effect of local ventilation temperature and speed under garments on the thermal response of humans at different metabolic rates

Ventilation under garments is one of the effective solutions to alleviate heat stress in the human body, but ventilation preferences and cooling effects in different body segments at different metabolic rates are not thoroughly studied. Eighteen participants performed three metabolic intensities of cycling exercise at 30 °C, RH 35%, where five body segments underwent adjustable ventilation. The ventilation preferences, psychological and physiological responses, and energy consumption were analyzed. The preferred ventilation temperature was approximately 24.5 ± 1.9 °C and the preferred ventilation speed was 1.56 ± 0.29-1.68 ± 0.27 m s-1. At low and moderate metabolic intensities, the five body segments preferred similar ventilation temperatures. At high metabolic intensity, the back preferred lower ventilation temperatures and higher ventilation speeds than the lower limbs. Additionally, the lower back and chest are considered optimal ventilation body segments to achieve higher overall thermal comfort. This study contributes to the optimization of personal ventilated cooling garments for different metabolism scenarios.

Effects of liquid cooling garment on physiological and psychological strain of firefighter in hot and warm environments

This study aimed to explore the effects of a liquid cooling garment on the physiological and psychological strains of firefighters. Twelve participants wearing firefighting protective equipment with the liquid cooling garment (LCG group) and without the liquid cooling garment (CON group) were recruited to conduct human trials in a climate chamber. During the trials, physiological parameters (mean skin temperature (T_sk), core temperature (T_c), and heart rate (HR)) and psychological parameters (thermal sensation vote (TSV), thermal comfort vote (TCV), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE)) were measured continuously. The heat storage, sweating loss, physiological strain index (PSI), and perceptual strain index (PeSI) were calculated. The results indicated that the liquid cooling garment decreased the mean skin temperature (maximum value of 0.62 °C), scapula skin temperature (maximum value of 1.90 °C), sweating loss (26%), and PSI (0.95 scales) with a significant difference (p < 0.05) at some time points when compared with the CON group. Moreover, the liquid cooling garment had little influence (p > 0.05) on core temperature, heart rate, TSV, TCV, RPE, and PeSI. The association analysis indicated that psychological strain had the potential to predict physiological heat strain with an R² value of 0.86 between the PeSI and PSI. This study offers insights into the evaluation of cooling system performance, the design of next-generation cooling systems, and the improvement of firefighters' benefits.

Partial cooling of the upper body with a water-cooled vest in an environment exceeding body temperature

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the efficacy of water-cooled clothing that continuously cools restricted body areas to suppress body temperature increase as an anti-heatstroke measure for workers in hot environments that exceed body temperature.

METHODS

Ten healthy men were placed in Room A (air temperature: 25°C, relative humidity: 50%) for 15 min. They were then transferred to Room B (air temperature: 40°C, relative humidity: 50%), where they rested for 10 min, then put on cooling clothing, and again rested for 15 min (the control group rested for 25 min). They then performed intense ergometer exercise for 40 min at 40% maximal oxygen consumption after which they rested for 10 min. The three trial conditions were CON (long-sleeved summer work clothes), VEST (cooling vest), and P-VEST (partial cooling vest). In VEST and P-VEST, water-cooled clothing continuously recirculated with 10°C water was used to cool the upper body. In P-VEST, only the neck, axillae, and heart areas were in contact with the cooled clothing. The measured indices were the rectal, esophageal, and external auditory canal temperatures; heart rate; estimated sweat volume; and subjective evaluations.

RESULTS

Compared with the CON condition, the rectal, esophageal, and external auditory canal temperatures and the heart rate were significantly lower and the subjective indices were decreased in the VEST and P-VEST conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Partial cooling showed a body cooling effect similar to that of whole upper body cooling. Partial body cooling promoted the heat dissipation, suggesting that partial cooling is efficient for maintaining body cooling in hot environments.

Moderate muscle cooling induced by single and intermittent/prolonged cold-water immersions differently affects muscle contractile function in young males

Background: We investigated the impact of moderate muscle cooling induced by single and intermittent/prolonged cold-water immersions (CWI) on muscle force and contractility in unfatigued state and during the development of fatigue resulting from electrically induced contractions. Methods: Twelve young males participated in this study consisting of two phases [single phase (SP) followed by intermittent/prolonged phase (IPP)], with both phases including two conditions (i.e., four trials in total) performed randomly: control passive sitting (CON) and cold-water immersions (10°C). SP-CWI included one 45 min-bath (from 15 to 60 min). IPP-CWI included three baths (45 min-bath from 15 to 60 min, and 15 min-baths from 165 to 180 min and from 255 to 270 min), with participants sitting at room temperature the rest of the time until 300 min. Blood pressure and intramuscular (Tmu) temperature were assessed, and neuromuscular testing was performed at baseline and 60 min after baseline during SP, and at baseline, 60, 90, 150 and 300 min after baseline during IPP. A fatiguing protocol (100 electrical stimulations) was performed after the last neuromuscular testing of each trial. Results: In unfatigued state, SP-CWI and IPP-CWI reduced electrically induced torque at 100 Hz (P100) but not at 20 Hz (P20), and increased P20/P100 ratio. The changes from baseline for P100 and P20/P100 ratio were lower in IPP-CWI than SP-CWI. Both cold-water immersion conditions slowed down muscle contraction and relaxation, and reduced maximal isokinetic contraction torque, but the changes from baseline were lower after IPP-CWI than SP-CWI. cold-water immersions did not impair maximal voluntary isometric contraction. During the fatiguing protocol, torque fatigue index and the changes in muscle contractile properties were larger after IPP-CWI than SP-CWI, but were in the same range as after CON conditions. The differences of muscle contractile function between SP-CWI and IPP-CWI were accompanied by a lower reduction of superficial Tmu and a smaller increase in systolic blood pressure after IPP-CWI than SP-CWI. Conclusion: IPP-CWI induces a less pronounced fast-to-slow contractile transition compared to SP-CWI, and this may result from the reduced vasoconstriction response and enhanced blood perfusion of the superficial muscle vessels, which could ultimately limit the reduction of superficial Tmu.

Mitigation of heat strain by wearing a long-sleeve fan-attached jacket in a hot or humid environment

Objectives

This study examined whether a fan‐attached jacket (FAJ) may mitigate the heat strain in hot or humid environment.

Methods

Nine healthy men engaged in 60‐min sessions on a bicycle ergometer (4 metabolic equivalents [METs] workload) in hot‐dry (40°C and 30% relative humidity) and warm‐humid (30°C and 85% relative humidity) environments. Both are equivalent to an approximately 29°C wet‐bulb globe temperature. The experiment was repeated—once wearing an ordinal jacket (control condition) and once wearing a long‐sleeve FAJ that transfers ambient air at a flow rate of 12 L/s (FAJ condition)—in both environments.

Results

Increases in core temperatures in hot‐dry environment were not statistically different between control and FAJ; however, that in the warm‐humid environment were significantly different between control and FAJ (0.96 ± 0.10°C and 0.71 ± 0.11°C in rectal temperature, P < .0001; and 0.94 ± 0.09°C and 0.61 ± 0.09°C in esophageal temperature, P < .0001). Changes in heart rate were different between control and FAJ in both environments (62 ± 3 bpm and 47 ± 7 bpm, P < .0001 in hot‐dry environment; and 61 ± 3 bpm and 46 ± 5 bpm, P < .0001 in the warm‐humid environment) and decrease of %weight change was different in hot‐dry environment (1.59 ± 0.12% and 1.25 ± 0.05%, P = .0039), but not in the warm‐humid environment.

Conclusions

Wearing a FAJ may mitigate heat strain both in hot or humid environments.

Janus-Type Hydroxyapatite-Incorporated Kevlar Aerogel@Kevlar Aerogel Supported Phase-Change Material Gel toward Wearable Personal Thermal Management

Thermal comfort is of great significance to maintain people's healthy state in physics, physiology, and psychology. Personal thermal management (PTM) that passively regulates the immediate environment around the human body has been proposed as a promising strategy to realize on-demand human thermal comfort. In this work, we propose a one-stop solution for the state of the art PTM by combining thermal shielding and thermal energy storage in a Janus-type wearable device, which is named a Janus-type hydroxyapatite-incorporated Kevlar aerogel@Kevlar aerogel supported phase-change material gel (HKA@KPG). The lower HKA with an ultralow thermal conductivity directly attached on the skin can effectively hinder heat transfer from the external environment to human skin. The upper KPG possessing a superior form stability and high energy storage capacity can absorb the heat generated by the human body to regulate the skin temperature. Both the HKA and KPG also demonstrate excellent biocompatibility. Due to its synergistic effect in thermal energy regulation, the Janus HKA@KPG has been applied in wearable PTM in static and dynamic modes to meet the thermal comfort requirements. It is anticipated that the one-stop thermal comfort solution for thermal shielding, thermal energy storage, self-supporting characteristics, wearability, and biosafety offers new possibilities for the next generation of wearable PTMs.

Materials in advanced design of personal protective equipment: a review

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has aroused tremendous attention toward personal protective equipment (PPE) in both scientific research and industrial manufacture. Despite decades of development in PPE design and fabrication, there's still much room for further optimization, in terms, of both protection performance and wear comfort. Interdisciplinary efforts have been devoted to this research field in recent years. Significantly, the innovation of materials, which brings about improved performance and versatile new functions for PPEs, has been widely adopted in PPE design. In this minireview, recent progress in the development of novel materials and structural designs for PPE application are presented in detail with the introduction of various material-based strategies for different PPE types, as well as the examples, which apply auxiliary components into face masks to enrich the functionalities and improve the personal feelings in the pandemic period.

A fan-attached jacket worn in an environment exceeding body temperature suppresses an increase in core temperature

We examined whether blowing hot air above body temperature under work clothing may suppress core temperature. Nine Japanese men engaged in two 30-min bicycle ergometer sessions at a workload of 40% VO₂max at 40 °C and 50% relative humidity. The experiment was conducted without wearing any cooling apparatus (CON), wearing a cooling vest that circulated 10.0 °C water (VEST), and wearing a fan-attached jacket that transferred ambient air underneath the jacket at a rate of 30 L/s (FAN). The VEST and FAN conditions suppressed the increases of rectal temperature (CON, VEST, FAN; 38.01 ± 0.19 °C, 37.72 ± 0.12 °C (p = 0.0076), 37.54 ± 0.19 °C (p = 0.0023), respectively), esophageal temperature (38.22 ± 0.30 °C, 37.55 ± 0.18 °C (p = 0.0039), 37.54 ± 0.21 °C (p = 0.0039), respectively), and heart rate (157.3 ± 9.8 bpm, 136.9 ± 8.9 bpm, (p = 0.0042), 137.5 ± 6.5 bpm (p = 0.0023), respectively). Two conditions also reduced the estimated amount of sweating and improved various subjective evaluations. Even in the 40 °C and 50% relative humidity environment, we may recommend wearing a fan-attached jacket because the heat dissipation through evaporation exceeded the heat convection from the hot ambient air.

Advanced Functional Materials for Intelligent Thermoregulation in Personal Protective Equipment

The exposure to extreme temperatures in workplaces involves physical hazards for workers. A poorly acclimated worker may have lower performance and vigilance and therefore may be more exposed to accidents and injuries. Due to the incompatibility of the existing standards implemented in some workplaces and the lack of thermoregulation in many types of protective equipment that are commonly fabricated using various types of polymeric materials, thermal stress remains one of the most frequent physical hazards in many work sectors. However, many of these problems can be overcome with the use of smart textile technologies that enable intelligent thermoregulation in personal protective equipment. Being based on conductive and functional polymeric materials, smart textiles can detect many external stimuli and react to them. Interconnected sensors and actuators that interact and react to existing risks can provide the wearer with increased safety, protection, and comfort. Thus, the skills of smart protective equipment can contribute to the reduction of errors and the number and severity of accidents in the workplace and thus promote improved performance, efficiency, and productivity. This review provides an overview and opinions of authors on the current state of knowledge on these types of technologies by reviewing and discussing the state of the art of commercially available systems and the advances made in previous research works.

Heat Safety in the Workplace: Modified Delphi Consensus to Establish Strategies and Resources to Protect the US Workers

The purpose of this consensus document was to develop feasible, evidence-based occupational heat safety recommendations to protect the US workers that experience heat stress. Heat safety recommendations were created to protect worker health and to avoid productivity losses associated with occupational heat stress. Recommendations were tailored to be utilized by safety managers, industrial hygienists, and the employers who bear responsibility for implementing heat safety plans. An interdisciplinary roundtable comprised of 51 experts was assembled to create a narrative review summarizing current data and gaps in knowledge within eight heat safety topics: (a) heat hygiene, (b) hydration, (c) heat acclimatization, (d) environmental monitoring, (e) physiological monitoring, (f) body cooling, (g) textiles and personal protective gear, and (h) emergency action plan implementation. The consensus-based recommendations for each topic were created using the Delphi method and evaluated based on scientific evidence, feasibility, and clarity. The current document presents 40 occupational heat safety recommendations across all eight topics. Establishing these recommendations will help organizations and employers create effective heat safety plans for their workplaces, address factors that limit the implementation of heat safety best-practices and protect worker health and productivity.
