From Surface Water to the Deep Sea: A Review on Factors Affecting the Biodegradation of Spilled Oil in Marine Environment

Over the past century, the demand for petroleum products has increased rapidly, leading to higher oil extraction, processing and transportation, which result in numerous oil spills in coastal-marine environments. As the spilled oil can negatively affect the coastal-marine ecosystems, its transport and fates captured a significant interest of the scientific community and regulatory agencies. Typically, the environment has natural mechanisms (e.g., photooxidation, biodegradation, evaporation) to weather/degrade and remove the spilled oil from the environment. Among various oil weathering mechanisms, biodegradation by naturally occurring bacterial populations removes a majority of spilled oil, thus the focus on bioremediation has increased significantly. Helping in the marginal recognition of this promising technique for oil-spill degradation, this paper reviews recently published articles that will help broaden the understanding of the factors affecting biodegradation of spilled oil in coastal-marine environments. The goal of this review is to examine the effects of various environmental variables that contribute to oil degradation in the coastal-marine environments, as well as the factors that influence these processes. Physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, oxygen level, pressure, shoreline energy, salinity, and pH are taken into account. In general, increase in temperature, exposure to sunlight (photooxidation), dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium), shoreline energy (physical advection—waves) and diverse hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms consortium were found to increase spilled oil degradation in marine environments. In contrast, higher initial oil concentration and seawater pressure can lower oil degradation rates. There is limited information on the influences of seawater pH and salinity on oil degradation, thus warranting additional research. This comprehensive review can be used as a guide for bioremediation modeling and mitigating future oil spill pollution in the marine environment by utilizing the bacteria adapted to certain conditions.

Applicability of ground source heat pumps as a bioremediation-enhancing technology for monoaromatic hydrocarbon contaminants

Geothermal or ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are among the highest growing renewable energy technologies used for heating and cooling of buildings. However, despite being a well-established technology, their geo-environmental effects such as impact of the heat on the biosphere is still not thoroughly understood. This study uses FEFLOW software, to simulate heat and mass transport of a vertical closed-loop GSHP system. Transient flow and heat transport results for a multiple borehole system are presented which indicate long-term effects on subsurface temperature. Moreover, the impact of temperature change in a contaminated granular porous subsurface during remediation applications is examined. In particular, as subsurface temperatures are elevated due to geothermal heating, sorption will decrease and biodegradation rates will increase. These effects are examined in the context of contaminant transport, to evaluate the possibility of utilizing geothermal heating as a remediation strategy. The results revealed that temperature changes caused by GSHP operation can significantly enhance biodegradation of hydrocarbon contaminants. For instance, elevated subsurface temperature resulted in 97% reduction in benzene total mass, after one year of GSHP operation for a typical office building in Toronto.

The tale of a versatile enzyme: Alpha-amylase evolution, structure, and potential biotechnological applications for the bioremediation of n-alkanes

As the primary source of a wide range of industrial products, the study of petroleum-derived compounds is of pivotal importance. However, the process of oil extraction and refinement is among the most environmentally hazardous practices, impacting almost all levels of the ecological chain. So far, the most appropriate strategy to overcome such an issue is through bioremediation, which revolves around the employment of different microorganisms to degrade hazardous compounds, generating less environmental impact and lower monetary costs. In this sense, a myriad of organisms and enzymes are considered possible candidates for the bioremediation process. Amidst the potential candidates is α-amylase, an evolutionary conserved starch-degrading enzyme. Notably, α-amylase was not only seen to degrade n-alkanes, a subclass of alkanes considered the most abundant petroleum-derived compounds but also low-density polyethylene, a dangerous pollutant produced from petroleum. Thus, due to its high conservation in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic lineages, in addition to the capability to degrade different types of hazardous compounds, the study of α-amylase becomes a rising interest. Nevertheless, there are no studies that review all biotechnological applications of α-amylase for bioremediation. In this work, we critically review the potential biotechnological applications of α-amylase, focusing on the biodegradation of petroleum-derived compounds. Evolutionary aspects are discussed, as well for all structural information and all features that could impact on the employment of this protein in the biotechnological industry, such as pH, temperature, and medium conditions. New perspectives and critical assessments are conducted regarding the application of α-amylase in the bioremediation of n-alkanes.
