Abstract
Simple Summary In the Mediterranean environment, climatic variability determines a discontinuity in the forage availability of pastures. Caciocavallo Palermitano is a cheese obtained from the milk of the Cinisara cattle breed, mainly raised on pasture. The present study investigated the fatty acid profile of cheeses produced in two typical farms in the four seasons of the year, with the aim of identifying specific fatty acids that can be used as biomarkers to discriminate the productions obtained in the different seasons, in order to economically enhance those seasonal productions that have better health characteristics. The results revealed the possibility of distinguishing spring productions from those of other seasons on the basis of the higher content of some fatty acids deriving from grazing fresh forage, the availability of which is greater in spring. Further studies should be conducted to also evaluate the possibility of using fatty acids as biomarkers of different diets. Abstract This experiment aims to evaluate the potential of fatty acids (FA) of Caciocavallo Palermitano cheese as biomarkers of production season and pasture-based diet. A total of 48 cheeses were made in the four seasons with milk from two farms that raised cows of Cinisara breed. The animals were fed on pasture with supplementation of wheat bran and wheat straw in the barn, and in summer also with Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes. The chemical composition and FA profile of cheese were influenced by the season and not by the farm. In particular, cheeses produced in spring were characterized by higher protein and lower fat, and showed higher contents in trans-vaccenic acid, α-linolenic acid, rumenic acid, n-3 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), and total PUFA. In winter, the lower availability of grazing forage, requiring a higher level of feeding integration, was responsible for an increase of saturated FA (SFA). The multivariate analysis distinguished clearly the cheeses made in winter and spring, while those produced in autumn and summer showed some overlapping points. Further investigations should be carried out to evaluate the effects of type and level of feeding integration on the presence of FA more suitable to be used as biomarkers of period and diet.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of soybean hulls (SBH) and/or calcium oxide (CaO) on rumen pH, digestibility, and performance of steers fed diets containing dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). In experiment 1, Angus × Simmental steers (n = 112, body weight [BW] = 364 ± 7.8 kg) were allotted to 1 of 4 diets arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial and placed in 16 pens (7 steers/pen, 4 pens/treatment, and 28 steers/treatment). Factors were SBH (0% or 30% of diet dry matter [DM]) and CaO (0% or 1%) inclusion. Basal diets contained 20% corn stover, 30% DDGS, and 4% supplement. Diets with SBH contained 14.1% or 15.0% corn and diets without SBH contained 43.9% or 44.8% corn. In experiment two, four steers (BW = 510 ± 9.8 kg) were allotted to a 4 × 4 Latin square (21 d periods) to determine the effects of CaO and SBH on ruminal pH, volatile fatty acid (VFA), nutrient digestibility, and digestion kinetics. Statistical analyses were conducted using the MIXED procedure of SAS. In experiment 1, BW did not differ among treatments (P ≥ 0.46). Overall carcass-adjusted gain did not differ due to SBH or CaO inclusion (P ≥ 0.13); however, there was an interaction (P = 0.01) where CaO improved gain in steers fed no SBH, but not in steers fed SBH. Steers fed SBH consumed more DM than steers not fed SBH (P = 0.02) and an interaction tended to occur (P = 0.06) where CaO increased dry matter intake in steers fed no SBH, but not in steers fed SBH. Calcium oxide increased hot carcass weight and yield grade (interaction; P ≤ 0.04) and tended to increase fat thickness (interaction; P = 0.08) in steers fed no SBH, but not in steers fed SBH. Dressing percentage, longissimus muscle area, % kidney, pelvic, heart fat, and marbling score did not differ among treatments (P ≥ 0.14). Total VFA concentrations were greater with SBH inclusion and with CaO addition (P < 0.01). Digestibility of DM, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was greater with CaO addition (P ≤ 0.04) and NDF and ADF digestibility were greater with SBH inclusion (P < 0.001). Inclusion of SBH did not affect (P ≥ 0.26) rate of digestion (k d) or passage (k p). Addition of CaO tended to increase mean retention time (P = 0.09). An interaction between SBH inclusion and CaO addition occurred for k d (P = 0.01), where CaO increased k d in steers fed SBH, but decreased k d when steers were fed no SBH. Total N excretion tended to be lower with SBH inclusion and CaO addition (P = 0.07). In conclusion, CaO enhances performance of cattle fed corn, DDGS, and corn stover diets, but not when corn is partially replaced by a fiber-based energy feed.

Abstract
Two ruminally cannulated steers [928 ± 25.5 kg body weight (BW)] were fed alfalfa hay at 2.0% of BW and served as donors of rumen fluid. Treatments were early-bud alfalfa (CON) or a combination [dry matter (DM) basis] of 80% early-bud alfalfa with 20% of corn silage (CS), brome grass hay (BGH), soybean hulls (SBH), beet pulp (BP), corn grain (CORN), dried corn distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS), or wheat middlings (MIDD). Tubes were incubated at multiple time points over a 72 h period and assessed for rate and extent of digestion. Samples were run in duplicate and replicated over 3 d. The potential extent of DM and organic matter (OM) degradation increased (P < 0.001) with CS, SBH, BP, CORN, and DDGS supplementation compared with CON. All supplements except MIDD decreased (P < 0.001) the fractional rates of DM and OM degradation compared with CON, with BGH, SBH, and DDGS having the lowest rates. Supplementation of SBH had the lowest (P < 0.001) initial rate of DM and OM degradation. These data indicate that SBH increases the extent of digestion while reducing the initial rate of degradation, suggesting that SBH has potential to reduce the incidence of frothy legume bloat.

Abstract
The use of additional supplement can affect ruminant performance by increasing the animal weight gain and maximizing profits from the activity. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of protein-energy supplementation on microbial synthesis, animal performance, nutrient digestibility, and body composition of Brangus x Zebu steers on pasture. The experiment lasted 160 days and included 36 animals divided into two groups; 18 steers received protein-energy supplementation (PES), and the other 18 received non-supplementation (NPES). Individual pasture intake and nutrient digestibility were estimated using the double indicator technique-chromium oxide and lignin in potassium permanganate. Spot urine samples were collected from 36 animals to determine creatinine, allantoin, and uric acid concentrations. All animals were slaughtered at the end of the experiment to evaluate body composition. There was increase in intake (P < 0.001) and dry matter digestibility (P = 0.01); it resulted in higher animal weight gain (P < 0.001) receiving supplementation. However, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in pasture nutrient intake between treatments. Supplementation increased microbial nitrogen (P < 0.001). For body composition, the model identity test that was applied showed no difference (P > 0.05) between the models, so it was adopted a common equation for both treatments. There was no difference (P > 0.05) for body composition between treatments. Therefore, the use of protein-energy supplementation for steers on pasture allowed higher microbial protein synthesis and better utilization of nutrients, which resulted in better animal performance. The use of protein-energy supplementation at 0.6% BW did not alter the carcass composition of Brangus x Zebu steers. However, it recommends protein-energy supplementation in pasture systems during the rainy period or using an irrigation system.

Abstract
Teff (Eragrostis tef cv. Moxie), a warm-season annual grass, could be an excellent forage for beef cattle. However, there is limited information on its nutritive value to cattle when harvested at different stages of maturity. Thus, the objective of this research was to determine the effect of feeding teff hay harvested at the boot (BT), early-heading (EH), or late-heading (LH) stages of maturity on nutrient intake, ruminal fermentation characteristics, omasal nutrient flow, and N utilization in beef cattle. Six ruminally cannulated beef heifers (mean initial BW ± SD, 476 ± 32.6) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 28-d periods (18 d for adaptation and 10 d for measurements). Dry matter intake was measured daily. Indwelling pH loggers were used to measure ruminal pH from days 21 to 28. Ruminal fluid and omasal digesta were collected from days 26 to 28 to determine fermentation characteristics and omasal nutrient flow. Fecal and urine samples to quantify N excretion were also collected (days 26 to 28). Blood samples for plasma urea-N (PUN) determination were collected 3 h post-feeding on day 28. There were no changes (P > 0.28) in the ADF or NDF content of teff with advancing maturity, but indigestible NDF increased (P < 0.01) with increasing maturity. Maturity had no effect (P ≥ 0.14) on DMI, and ruminal total short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentration, pH, digestibility, and outflow of DM, OM, NDF, ADF, and CP. However, the CP content of BT hay was greater (P < 0.01) than for EH and LH hay (18.1, 14.1, and 11.5%, respectively, DM basis), and this resulted in the higher CP intake (P < 0.01) for heifers fed the BT than the EH and LH hay. Consequently, ruminal ammonia-N (NH3-N) concentration was greater (P < 0.01) for heifers fed BT than EH and LH hay, thereby possibly explaining the tendency for a decrease (P = 0.08) in PUN concentration, and a decrease (P < 0.01) in the excretion of total N, urine N, and urea-N (UUN) with advancing maturity. However, fecal N excretion (g/d) did not differ (P = 0.76). In conclusion, despite a decrease in CP intake and ruminal NH3-N concentration, feeding beef heifers EH and LH compared to BT teff hay did not compromise ruminal digestion and outflow of DM, OM, NDF, ADF, and CP, and microbial protein synthesis. Advancing maturity in teff hay also resulted in a decrease in the excretion of total N and urine N and UUN when fed to cattle.

Abstract
The objectives of this research were to test interactions of supplement type, liquid versus dry, and forage type, hay versus corn stover, on digestibility and ruminal metabolism of beef cattle. Ruminally fistulated steers were fed in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: 1) hay with liquid supplement, 2) hay with dry supplement, 3) corn stover with liquid supplement, and 4) corn stover with dry supplement. The liquid supplement was molasses and glycerin based (23.3% CP and 1.63 Mcal/kg NEm) whereas the dry supplement was ground corn based (16.8% CP and 1.81 Mcal/kg NEm). Each period, steers were adapted to diets for 14 d and samples were collected for 8 d. In situ disappearance was determined by a 24-h incubation of Dacron bags, containing soybean hulls, in the rumen. There were no interactions ( ≥ 0.25) of supplement and forage type on DMI, apparent total tract digestibility, or ruminal pH. There was a tendency ( = 0.08) for a forage × supplement type interaction for in situ NDF disappearance (ISNDFD). There were no differences in ISNDFD in steers fed hay, but liquid supplement increased ISNDFD in steers fed corn stover. There were no main effects ( ≥ 0.12) of supplement type on DMI, apparent total tract or in situ digestibility, or ruminal pH. There was a supplement × hour interaction ( = 0.04) for acetate concentrations. Although no effect occurred at 0 h after feeding, at 3 and 6 h after feeding, acetate concentrations were reduced in steers fed liquid supplements when compared with those fed dry supplements. In addition, there was a supplement × hour ( = 0.02) interaction for butyrate concentrations, where at all time points, butyrate concentrations increased ( ≤ 0.01) in steers fed liquid supplements when compared with those fed dry supplements. Steers fed hay had increased DMI ( < 0.01) and apparent total tract NDF digestibility ( = 0.07) when compared with steers fed corn stover, regardless of supplement type. At 0, 1.5, and 18 h after feeding, ruminal pH was greater ( ≤ 0.01) in cattle consuming corn stover when compared with those fed hay, regardless of supplement type. However, steers fed hay had increased ( < 0.01) concentrations of acetate and total VFA compared with steers fed corn stover, regardless of supplement. Feeding liquid supplement increased ISNDFD when steers were fed corn stover; however, these changes were not associated with differences in total tract digestibility. Regardless of forage type fed, the liquid supplement increased ruminal butyrate concentrations.

One hundred ninety-two crossbred beef steers (280±25 kg) were assigned to a 5×2 factorial; degradable intake protein (DIP; 80, 90, 100, 110, 120% of requirement) with and without a direct-fed microbial (DFM) primarily containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Enterococcus faecium (109CFU steer−1d−1). Dry matter intake, morbidity, and immune response were not affected (P≥0.11). The first 28 d, average daily gain (ADG) did not differ with DIP in control, but increased in a cubic fashion with DFM (DIP×DFM; P=0.05). No differences (P≥0.25) in ADG occurred from days 29 to 56; however, there was a tendency (P=0.08) for a cubic increase in ADG with increasing DIP with DFM over 56 d. The first 28 d, growth efficiency did not differ across DIP levels in control but increased linearly with DFM (DIP×DFM; P=0.05). No differences (P≥0.21) in efficiency were observed from days 29 to 56 or overall. Without DFM, fecal pH decreased between days 7 and 14; however, with DFM there was no change in pH (DFM×time; P<0.05). Performance response to DFM is dependent on DIP; however, DFM does not impact morbidity or humoral immune response.

Abstract
Avaliaram-se os efeitos da suplementação e o uso de cultura de levedura sobre o ganho médio diário (GMD), os parâmetros ruminais e a concentração de ureia plasmática em bezerros sob pastejo de aveia preta (Avena strigosa) e azevém (Lolium multiflorum), e estudaram-se a produção e a composição química da forragem. Utilizaram-se 32 bezerros, em pastejo contínuo e lotação variável. Os tratamentos foram: apenas mistura mineral (MM); mistura mineral mais levedura (MML); mistura mineral mais ração (MMR); e mistura mineral mais ração mais levedura (MMRL). A MM contendo casca de soja foi ofertada em 150g/animal/dia, e a levedura foi adicionada à MM na quantidade de 10g/animal/dia. A ração contendo 75% de NDT e 23% de PB foi fornecida para um consumo diário médio de 12g/kg de peso corporal. O GMD, para os respectivos tratamentos, foi 0,610; 0,599; 0,809 e 0,818kg/animal, na ordem citada. A concentração de amônia ruminal e a de ureia plasmática não foram influenciadas pelos tratamentos. A biomassa forrageira diminuiu ao longo do ciclo vegetativo, com rendimentos inicial e final de 1.364 e 879kg de MS/ha, e os teores médios de NDT e PB de 71,7 e 11,7%, respectivamente. O fornecimento do suplemento melhorou o desempenho dos animais, e a adição de levedura não influenciou as variáveis estudadas.

Abstract
The objectives were to compare the effect of exogenous fibrolytic enzyme (Biocellulase A20) or anhydrous ammonia (4% DM) treatment on the nutritive value, voluntary intake, and digestion kinetics of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon cultivar Coastal) hay harvested after 2 maturities (5- and 13-wk regrowths). Six individually housed, ruminally cannulated Brangus steers (BW 325 ± 10 kg) were used in an experiment with a 6 × 6 Latin square design with a 3 (additives) × 2 (maturities) factorial arrangement of treatments. Each period consisted of 14 d of adaptation and 7, 4, 1, 1, and 4 d for measuring in vivo digestibility, in situ degradability, no measurements, rumen liquid fermentation and passage indices, and rate of solid passage, respectively. Steers were fed hay for ad libitum intake and supplemented with sugarcane molasses and distillers grain (supplement total of 2.88 kg DM/d). Enzyme did not affect the nutritional composition of hay but ammonia treatment decreased hay NDF, hemicellulose, and ADL concentrations and increased the CP concentration particularly for the mature lignified 13-wk hay. The enzyme increased NDF and hemicellulose digestibility of the 5-wk hay but decreased those of the 13-wk hay. Ammoniation decreased intake of hay but increased digestibility of DM, OM, NDF, hemicellulose, ADF, and cellulose and increased the ruminal in situ soluble and potentially digestible fractions and the rate of DM degradation of the 13-wk hay. Also, ammoniation increased the concentrations of ruminal NH3, total VFA, acetate, and butyrate but enzyme treatment did not. Neither enzyme addition nor ammoniation affected rate of liquid and solid passage. In conclusion, ammoniation decreased the concentration of most fiber fractions, decreased the intake of hays, and increased their CP concentration, in vivo digestibility, and in situ degradability at both maturities whereas enzyme application increased fiber digestibility of the 5-wk hay but decreased it in the case of the 13-wk hay.

Abstract
A 4-unit dual-flow continuous culture fermentor system was used to evaluate the effects of supplementing fresh herbage with a total mixed ration (TMR) or flaxseed on nutrient digestibility, fermentation profile, and bacterial N synthesis. Diets were randomly assigned to fermentors in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Each fermentor was fed a total of 70 g of dry matter/d of 1 of 4 diets: (1) 100% freeze-dried orchardgrass herbage (Dactylis glomerata L.; HERB), (2) 100% freeze-dried TMR (100TMR), (3) 50% orchardgrass herbage supplemented with 50% TMR (50TMR), or (4) 90% orchardgrass herbage supplemented with 10% ground flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.; FLAX). Preplanned, single degree of freedom orthogonal contrasts were constructed to assess the effects of feeding system (HERB vs. 100TMR), herbage supplementation (HERB vs. 50TMR + FLAX), and herbage supplemental source (50TMR vs. FLAX). Compared with the HERB diet, the 100TMR diet significantly reduced apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber. Herbage supplementation with 50TMR or FLAX significantly reduced or tended to reduce apparent digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber, suggesting that replacing high-quality, highly digestible fresh herbage with forage TMR likely caused depressions in nutrient digestibilities. Concentration of total volatile fatty acids, molar proportions of acetate, propionate, and isovalerate, as well as the acetate:propionate ratios were all significantly higher in fermentors fed 100TMR compared with HERB, likely in response to enhanced supply of fermentable energy. In general, feeding system, herbage supplementation, and type of supplementation did not affect N metabolism in the present study. The few significant changes in N metabolism (e.g., flows of total N and non-NH3-N) were primarily linked to increased fermentor N supply with feeding herbage-based diets (HERB and FLAX). Although TMR-based diets decreased nutrient digestibility slightly, TMR offered advantages in bacterial fermentation in relation to volatile fatty acid production, which could potentially translate into better animal performance. Flaxseed shows promise as an alternative supplement for herbage-based diets; however, further in vivo evaluation is needed to determine the optimal level to optimize animal production while reducing feed costs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that alfalfa (ALF) or birdsfoot trefoil (BFT) eaten prior to a meal of endophyte-infected tall fescue (TF) or reed canarygrass (RCG) would provide benefits not possible when TF or RCG are eaten alone. In trial 1, four groups of five lambs were first offered ALF for 30 min followed by either TF or RCG for 3.5 h in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of a completely randomized design that included grass (TF or RCG) with or without ALF. Trial 2 was similar to trial 1 except we used a new group of lambs fed BFT. Forage, fecal and urine samples were collected and analyzed for dry matter intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter, energy (in Kcal), nitrogen and neutral detergent fiber. RESULTS A meal of either ALF or BFT prior to eating TF or RCG caused lambs to eat more total dry matter and nitrogen (both in g d⁻¹) and energy (in MJ d⁻¹) than lambs fed only TF or RCG (P < 0.05). Lambs fed ALF slightly reduced intake of TF and RCG relative to unsupplemented animals. Lambs fed BFT ate slightly less RCG, but much more TF than unsupplemented animals (P < 0.10). Lambs ate much less BFT than ALF, but they were stimulated to eat TF to a greater degree by BFT than by ALF. CONCLUSIONS The enhanced intake of TF by lambs provided BFT, as well as the greater nutrient intake by lambs fed legumes and grasses was likely due in part to complementary profiles of alkaloids, saponins, and tannins.

Abstract
Thirty-six male Hu lambs consuming a rice straw-based diet were used in a 60-day trial to study the associative effects of cornstarch supplementation on intake, digestion, ruminal microbial population and growth performance. All animals were fed rice straw ad libitum together with 160 g/day of rapeseed meal and supplemented with cornstarch at levels of 0 (control), 60, 120 or 180 g/day, respectively. Increment of supplementary cornstarch showed little influence on rice straw intake. Optimal growth performance and highest apparent digestibility of organic matter was achieved in the 120 g/day cornstarch group (P < 0.05), while the digestibilities of neutral detergent fiber and crude protein were significantly decreased by 180 g/day cornstarch (P < 0.05). Similar results were observed for carboxymethyl cellulose activity and relative populations of cellulolytic bacteria (Ruminococcus albus, Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Fibrobacter succinogene). Blood urea nitrogen was reduced by supplementary cornstarch, indicating enhanced protein utilization efficiency. Carcass traits were all significantly improved by supplementary cornstarch. These results suggested that proper amounts of starch supplementation (within 0.5% BW) has little adverse effect on forage utilization, but could effectively improve growth performance. High levels of cornstarch, however, would decrease cellulase activity and populations of cellulolytic bacteria, and hence the digestibility of forage.

Abstract
Twenty-eight Angus (289 +/- 3.8 kg) steers were used in a completely randomized design to evaluate the effect of isocaloric supplementation of 2 different energy sources to steers rotationally grazing tall fescue pastures for 197 d in comparison to positive and negative controls. Steers were supplemented with either corn grain (0.52% BW on a DM basis; PC) or soybean hulls plus corn oil (0.45% BW on a DM basis + 0.10% BW on an as-fed basis; PO) using Calan gates for individual intake measurement. Negative, pasture only (PA), and positive, high-concentrate control diets (85% concentrate:15% roughage on DM basis; C) were also included in the study. Steers on PC, PO, and PA treatments were managed together under a rotational grazing system, whereas C steers were fed a high-concentrate diet for the final 113 d using Calan gates. Forage DMI and apparent DM and NDF digestibility for the grazing treatments were evaluated using Cr(2)O(5) and indigestible NDF as digesta markers. Energy supplementation decreased (P = 0.02) forage DMI (% of BW) with respect to PA, but not (P = 0.58) total DMI. There were no differences (P = 0.53) among grazing treatments on apparent total DM digestibility. However, NDF digestibility was less (P < or = 0.05) in PC than in PO and PA; the latter 2 treatments did not differ (P > 0.05). Overall ADG was greater (P < 0.01) in supplemented, regardless of type, than in nonsupplemented grazing treatments. During the final 113 d, ADG was greater (P < 0.01) in C than in the grazing treatments. Overall supplement conversion did not differ (P = 0.73) between supplement types and was less (P = 0.006) than C. Carcass traits did not differ (P > 0.05) between energy sources. Dressing percentage and HCW were greater (P < 0.01) in supplemented cattle than in PA. Fat thickness and KPH percentage for PA were less (P < 0.05) than for PO but did not differ (P > 0.14) from PC. Marbling score, LM area, and quality grade did not differ (P > 0.05) between grazing treatments. Hot carcass weight for C was heavier (P < 0.001) than for pastured cattle. Quality and yield grades of C carcasses were also greater (P < 0.001) than carcasses from pastured steers. Energy supplementation, regardless of source, to grazing steers increased ADG, dressing percentage, and carcass weight compared with PA steers; however, supplemented steers had less ADG, efficiency, dressing percentage, and carcass weight compared with high-concentrate finished steers.

Abstract
A 2-yr study was conducted during the 2004 to 2005 (YR1) and 2005 to 2006 (YR2) winter wheat grazing seasons to determine the effects of supplementation strategies and delivery methods on supplement intake and growth performance of grazing steers (YR1, n = 253, initial BW 255 +/- 25 kg; YR2, n = 116, initial BW 287 +/- 14 kg). The 5 treatments were as follows: 1) negative control (NC), no supplemental nutrients; 2) free-choice, nonmedicated mineral (MIN); 3) free-choice, medicated mineral with 1,785 mg of monensin/kg of mineral mixture (RMIN); 4) RMIN and soybean hulls (SH-RMIN); and 5) a soybean hull-based energy supplement containing 165 mg of monensin/kg (GRNGOLD). Energy supplements were hand-fed on alternate days (average daily intake = 0.91 kg/steer). Inclusion of monensin in the free-choice mineral mixture decreased intake of the mineral mixture by 63% in YR1 and 55% in YR2 when no other supplement was offered. Consumption of RMIN provided from 129 to 161 mg of monensin/steer on average, whereas GRNGOLD provided 150 mg of monensin/d. Compared with NC, MIN did not affect ADG in YR1 (P = 0.38) but increased (P = 0.01) ADG by 0.22 kg/steer in YR2. Conversely, ADG of RMIN steers was greater (P = 0.03) than that of MIN steers during YR1 (0.72 vs. 0.55 kg/steer) but not different (P = 0.35) in YR2. Providing supplemental energy increased ADG by 0.13 kg/steer (0.85 vs. 0.72 +/- 0.053) in YR1 compared with RMIN, but no increase in ADG was observed in YR2. No difference (P > 0.24) was observed in ADG between SH-RMIN and GRNGOLD in either year. Conversion of the energy supplements (kg of as-fed supplement divided by kg of additional ADG) was excellent in YR1, resulting in 1 kg of BW gain for each 3.1 kg of supplement consumed. However, due to smaller increases in ADG with the energy and monensin supplements in YR2, supplement conversion for YR2 averaged 17.6. The absence of a difference (P > 0.24) in ADG between steers that received SH-RMIN and GRNGOLD suggests that the method of delivery (separate packages vs. a single package) for energy, monensin, and mineral supplementation is not important.

Abstract
Six steers (288.6 +/- 2.1 kg of BW) fitted with rumen and duodenal cannulas were used in a crossover design to evaluate intake, rumen fermentation, and site of nutrient digestion of freshly clipped, endophyte-infected (E+) Kentucky 31 tall fescue with or without soybean hull (SH) supplementation at 0.60% of BW (OM basis). Steers were placed in metabolism units within an environmentally controlled room and provided with free-choice access to fresh forage, water, and a vitamin/mineral supplement. The spring growth of E+ tall fescue was harvested daily during the experiment. Supplement was fed at 0700 with approximately 65% of the estimated daily forage. To maintain a fresh forage supply, additional forage was stored in a cooler and fed at 1900. Periods were 21 d with 14 d of adaptation and 7 d of digesta sample collection. Chromic oxide was used as a marker of duodenal digesta flow. Duodenal samples were taken 4 times daily with times shifting by 1 h each day to represent all 24 h of a day. Treatments were considered significant at P < 0.05. Supplementation of SH decreased forage OM intake from 1.64 to 1.41% of BW but increased total OM intake from 1.64 to 2.01% of BW. Apparent percentages (53.1%) and quantities (2,786 g/d) of rumen OM disappearance were not affected by supplementation. Percentages of total tract OM disappearance were not different (70.8%). Percentages of apparent rumen NDF disappearance also were not different (65.6%). Percentages of N disappearance were not different. Supplementation of SH resulted in increased total N (34.1 g/d) and microbial N (17.1 g/d) flowing to the duodenum. Rumen pH (6.5) was not affected, and rumen ammonia concentrations exhibited a time x treatment interaction in which SH decreased ammonia for 12 h after supplementation. Total VFA concentrations (103.9 mM) were unaffected. Liquid dilution rate (12.7%/h) and rumen OM fill (4.3 kg) were not different between treatments. Supplementation of SH at a rate of 0.60% of BW (OM basis) to calves consuming fresh E+ tall fescue decreased forage consumption but resulted in greater total intake, greater flow of N to the duodenum, and increased total tract OM disappearance.
