Effects of season, pregnancy and lactation on thyroxine turnover in the mare

Thyroid hormone concentrations in relation to age, sex, pregnancy, and perinatal loss in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

This study evaluated circulating concentrations of thyroid hormones in relation to age, sex, pregnancy status, and perinatal loss in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) under human care. A total of 373 blood samples were collected from 60 individual dolphins housed at nine aquariums/oceanariums. Serum concentrations of total and free thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) were analyzed with commercial RIA kits validated for use with dolphins. While the effect of age was indicated by higher (P<0.0001) concentrations of total and free T4 and T3 in juveniles than adults, the effect of sex on thyroid hormones was inconclusive. The effect of pregnancy was indicated by higher (P<0.035) total and free T4 and T3 during early pregnancy compared to non-pregnancy. For both successful and unsuccessful pregnancy outcomes, maternal concentrations of thyroid hormones were highest during early, intermediate during mid, and lowest during late pregnancy (P<0.07 to P<0.0001). Compared to live and thriving births, concentrations of total and free T4 and total T3 were lower (P<0.08 to P<0.001) in dolphins with perinatal loss. Lower concentrations ranged from 10% to 14% during early, 11% to 18% during mid, and 23% to 37% during late pregnancy. In conclusion, the effects of age, reproductive status and stage of pregnancy on thyroid hormone concentrations are necessary factors to take into account when assessing thyroid gland function. Since perinatal loss may be associated with hypothyroidism in dolphins, analysis of serum T4 and T3 should be considered for those dolphins that have a history of pregnancy loss.

Circulating concentrations of thyroid hormones in pregnant camels (Camelus dromedarius )

Blood samples from 16 female camels were collected at monthly intervals commencing from 60 d post. breeding until the last month of gestation. Two camels failed to conceive and two had unnoticed abortions. The average gestation period was 398+/-13 and 372+/-11 in camels bearing male and female fetus, respectively, with an overall mean of 383+/-9 d. Sera were analyzed for thyroxine (T(4)) and triiodothyronine (T(3)) by radioimmunoassay. Mean T(4) and T(3) concentrations varied from 76 to 116 ng/ml and 0.73 to 1.32 ng/ml, respectively, during various stages of gestation. In general, the T(4) and T(3) levels were higher during early pregnancy, with lowest values in the tenth month. T(4):T(3) ratio showed minor, nonsignificant fluctuations. Age of dam of sex of fetus had no effect on hormone levels. Similarly, hormone levels were not affected by failure of conception or by abortion.

Plasma thyroxine concentration in non-pregnant and lactating mink, and effect of dietary rapeseed oil in the reproduction period

Effect of dietary rapeseed oil from 00-varieties of rapeseed (0, 1.5% or 3% respectively in the wet compounded diets) on plasma thyroxine (T4), reproductive performance and kit weight gain during lactation was investigated with 3 groups of each 20 mink females. Plasma T4, which has not previously been reported for female mink, was significantly lower in lactating than in non-pregnant females. Unlike in an earlier experiment with growing male mink, it was not affected by dietary rapeseed oil. Reproductive performance, female weight development, feed consumption, and kit weight gain was normal in all treatment groups and there were no significant effects of the experimental treatment.

Influence of pregnancy on diurnal and seasonal changes in cortisol, T3 and T4 levels in the mare blood serum

1. The diurnal changes in the level of total protein, cortisol, T3 and T4 were studied in four barren and four pregnant standard-bred mares, kept and examined under the same conditions. 2. Blood samples were taken every 4 hr. for one day each month, throughout one year. 3. In barren mares, a diurnal rhythm in cortisol level (acrophase at 0530 hr in summer and at 0830 hr in winter) and in T3 level (acrophase at 1330 hr in summer and at 1800 hr in winter) was found. 4. In pregnant mares, a diurnal rhythm in cortisol level only till 5th month of pregnancy was observed. 5. A diurnal rhythm in T3 level was found throughout the pregnancy, with acrophase always at 1400 hr. 6. No diurnal rhythm in the total protein content and in the T4 level was observed. 7. In both groups of mares the seasonal cyclicity in T3 and T4 levels were found. A seasonal cyclicity in cortisol level was found only in pregnant mares. 8. Pregnancy abolished seasonal cyclicity in total protein and showed it in cortisol level. 9. Pregnancy in mares modifies diurnal rhythms as well as seasonal cycles in secretion and metabolism of the hormones studied.

Thyroid hormone periodicity in healthy adult geldings

Serum samples were collected from 10 healthy geldings every 4 h for three consecutive days and the triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) concentrations determined by radioimmunoassay. There were significant differences in the hormone concentrations related to time. The mean (+/- sd) T3 concentration peaked around 08.00 h at a level (54.06 +/- 14.02 ng/dl) significantly (P less than .001) higher than the lowest concentration (38.71 +/- 10.81 ng/dl) around midnight. Although the highest mean T3 level was 08.00 h, this value was not significantly different from the noon and 16.00 h levels. Likewise, the mean T3 level at midnight was not significantly different from the 20.00 h and 04.00 h levels, resulting in a plateau from 08.00 h to 16.00 h and a trough from 20.00 h to 04.00 h. The mean (+/- sd) T4 concentration peaked around 16.00 h at a level (2.43 +/- .81 micrograms/dl) significantly (P less than .01) higher than the lowest concentration (1.79 +/- .63 micrograms/dl) around 04.00 h.

Effects of environmental and other stressors on blood hormone patterns in lactating animals

Recent data on various environmental stressors and blood hormone patterns are presented for lactating cattle. Known stressor effects of such factors as environmental temperature, air pollution, and noise on the plasma thyroxine, growth hormone, cortisol, prolactin, progesterone, luteinzing hormone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine of lactating cattle are discussed. Information on stressor effects is lacking on glucagon, insulin, vasopressin, calcitonin, oxytocin, thyrotrophic hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, melatonin, parathyroid hormone, and estrogens in the lactating cow. The importance of evaluating both the effect of environmental stressor and of production or lactation intensity is emphasized in the overall interpretation of changes in hormone of plasma. The short and long term environmental heat effects on thyroxine, cortisol, and growth hormone are clear with initial increased due to acute stressors and a decline of amounts in plasma after prolonged exposure to stressors. The relationship of amounts in plasma of these hormones to milk production appears to be related directly for cortisol, growth hormone, and prolactin with an inverse relationship with thyroxine. Epinephrine and norepinephrine seem to be elevated with prolonged environmental heat stress. However, the influence of intensity of lactation has not been measured. Hormones in plasma as they relate to stressor effects and milk production are important as potential indicators of the physiological state of a cow and reflect the physiological compensations a cow undergoes at various lactation intensities and/or stress exposure.

Effects of moderate heat and milk yield on plasma thyroxine in cattle

The effects of milk yield (lactational intensity) and short (18 h) moderate heat exposure (30 C) on plasma thyroxine were studies in spring (March) and fall (October) in the University of Missouri dairy herd. Spring and fall thyroxine did not differ at thermoneutral temperature of 15 C. The relatively short moderate heat exposure had no effect within production groups either in the spring or fall sampling. As stage of lactation progressed, thyroxine also increased. The effect of stage of gestation was an elevation in the first trimester (compared to nonbred) that progressed into the second and third trimesters. In both spring and fall (15 C), the high production group (adjusted and unadjusted) had lower plasma thyroxine compared with middle and low production groups, while no difference in adjusted means was significant between middle and low production groups. Correlations were --.51 between plasma thyroxine and lactational intensity in both spring and fall. The short exposure to moderately high environmental temperature intensified the relationship of lowered plasma thyroxine in hibh producing cows, and thyroxine was negatively correlated (--.63 and --.64) with lactational intensity. Because total plasma thyroxine is inversely related to lactational intensity, studies are warranted to quantitate free hormonal concentrations and utilization by dairy cattle with varying productivity.
