Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a serious and potentially fatal form of cancer associated with liver damage. New anticancer drugs are increasingly needed due to the increasing number of cancer cases every year. In this study, diarylheptanoids (DAH) from Alpinia officinarum were examined for their antitumor activity against DAB-induced HCC in mice, as well as their ability to reduce liver damage. Assays for cytotoxicity were conducted using MTT. The DAB-induced HCC Swiss albino male mice were given DAH and sorafenib (SOR) either as single treatments or in combination, and the effects on tumour development and progression were monitored. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) were evaluated along with biomarkers of liver enzymes (AST, ALT, and GGT). The apoptosis-related gene (CASP8), the apoptosis-related gene (p53), the anti-inflammatory genes (IL-6), the migration-related gene matrix metalloprotease-9 (MMP9), and the angiogenesis-related gene vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were assessed using qRT-PCR in the hepatic tissue. As a final step, DAH and SOR were docked with CASP8 and MMP9 via molecular docking to propose potential mechanisms of action. Our results revealed that the combination of DAH and SOR has a potent inhibitory effect on the growth and viability of the HepG2 cell line. The outcomes demonstrated that DAH and SOR-treated HCC-bearing mice displayed a reduction in the tumour burden and liver damage as demonstrated by (1) parameters of repaired liver function; (2) low levels of hepatic MDA; (3) elevated levels of hepatic T-SOD; (4) p53, IL-6, CASP8, MMP9, and VEGF downregulation; and (5) enhanced hepatic structure. The best results were revealed in mice that were co-treated with DAH (given orally) and SOR (given intraperitoneally). The docking study also proposed that both DAH and SOR could inhibit CASP8 and MMP9's oncogenic activities and had a high affinity for these enzymes. In conclusion, according to study findings, DAH enhances SOR antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects and identifies their molecular targets. Furthermore, the results revealed that DAH was able to boost the anticancer effects of the drug SOR and reduce liver damage caused by HCC in mice. This suggests that DAH could be a potential therapeutic agent against liver cancer.

Abstract
Fresh mushrooms (Flammulina velutipes) are very perishable and easily brown; also they undergo postharvest loss of nutritive constituents. In this study, cinnamaldehyde (CA) emulsion was prepared by using soybean phospholipids (SP) as emulsifier and pullulan (Pul) as stabilizer. The effect of emulsion on the quality of mushroom during storage was also studied. The experimental results indicated that the emulsion obtained by adding 6 % pullulan was found to the most uniform and stable, which is beneficial to its application. Emulsion coating maintained the storage quality of Flammulina velutipes. The incorporation of CA emulsion into the coating system showed a positive effect on inhibiting the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, resulting from improving the effectiveness of delaying active free radical scavenging enzymes. The shelf life of mushrooms coated with emulsion was significantly prolonged, which indicates its potential application in food preservation.

Abstract
The cuticle of plants, a hydrophobic membrane that covers their aerial organs, is crucial to their ability to withstand biotic and abiotic stressors. Fruit is the reproductive organ of plants, and an important dietary source that can offer a variety of nutrients for the human body, and fruit cuticle performs a crucial protective role in fruit development and postharvest quality. This review discusses the universality and diversity of the fruit cuticle composition, and systematically summarizes the metabolic process of fruit cuticle, including the biosynthesis, transport and regulatory factors (including transcription factors, phytohormones and environmental elements) of fruit cuticle. Additionally, we emphasize the postharvest functions and postharvest regulatory technologies of fruit cuticle, and propose future research directions for fruit cuticle.

Abstract
The increasing demand for nutraceuticals in the circular economy era has driven the research toward studying bioactive compounds from renewable underexploited resources. In this regard, the exploration of brown algae has shown significant growth and maintains a great promise for the future. One possible explanation could be that brown algae are rich sources of nutritional compounds (polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber, proteins, minerals, and vitamins) and unique metabolic compounds (phlorotannins, fucoxanthin, fucoidan) with promising biological activities that make them good candidates for nutraceutical applications with increased value-added. In this review, a deep description of bioactive compounds from brown algae is presented. In addition, recent advances in biological activities ascribed to these compounds through in vitro and in vivo assays are pointed out. Delivery strategies to overcome some drawbacks related to the direct application of algae-derived compounds (low solubility, thermal instability, bioavailability, unpleasant organoleptic properties) are also reviewed. Finally, current commercial and legal statuses of ingredients from brown algae are presented, considering future therapeutical and market perspectives as nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenolic compound detected in grapes, berries, and red wine. The anticancer activities of RSV have been observed in vivo and in vitro studies. However, the pharmacology mechanism of RSV is confusing due to its low bioavailability. According to studies of the metabolic characteristics of RSV, the gut intestine is a crucial site of its health benefits. Dietary RSV exhibits a profound effect on the gut microbiota structure and metabolic function. In addition, emerging evidence demonstrates a protective effect of RSV metabolites against carcinogenesis. Therefore, to better understand the anticancer mechanisms of dietary RSV, it is vital to evaluate the role of RSV-microbiota-host interactions in cancer therapy. In this review, we summarized significant findings on the anticancer activities of RSV based on epidemiological, experimental and clinical studies involved in investigating the metabolic characteristics and the traditional anticancer mechanisms of RSV. Special attention is given to the putative mechanisms involving microbiota-host interactions, such as the modulation of gut microecology and the anticancer effects of RSV metabolites. The changes in microbiota-host interactions after RSV supplementation play vital roles in cancer prevention and thus offering a new perspective on nutritional interventions to treat cancer.

Abstract
Eastern countries are a major source of medicinal plants, which set up a rich source of ethnopharmacologically known medicines used in the treatment of various diseases. These traditional medicines have been known as complementary, alternative, or nonconventional therapy across globe for ages. Tuberculosis (TB) poses a huge global burden and leads to maximum number of deaths due to an infectious agent. Treatment of TB using Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) therapy comprises multiple antibiotics is quite lengthy and causes serious side-effects in different organs. The length of the TB treatment leads to withdrawal from the patients, which paves the way for the emergence of drug resistance in the bacterial population. These concerns related to therapy need serious and immediate interventions. Traditional medicines using phytochemicals has shown to provide tremendous potential in TB treatment, mainly in the eradication of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), increasing natural immunity, and managing the side effects of anti-TB drugs. This review describes the antituberculosis potential of selected ethnopharmacologically important phytochemicals as potential immune-modulator and as an adjunct-therapy in TB. This review will be a useful reference for researchers working on ethnopharmacology and will open the door for the discovery of novel agents as an adjunct-therapy to tuberculosis.

Abstract
Mycobacterium tuberculosis developed efficient adaptation mechanisms in response to different environmental conditions. This resulted in the ability to survive in human macrophages and in resistance to numerous antibiotics. To get insight into bacterial responses to potent antimycobacterial natural compounds, we tested how usnic acid, a lichen-derived secondary metabolite, would influence mycobacteria at transcriptomic and metabolomic levels. The analysis of expression of sigma factors revealed a profound impact of usnic acid on one of the primary genetic regulatory systems of M. tuberculosis Combined liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses allowed us to observe the perturbations in metabolic pathways, as well as in lipid composition, which took place within 24 h of exposure. Early bacterial response was related to redox homeostasis, lipid synthesis, and nucleic acid repair. Usnic acid treatment provoked disturbances of redox state in mycobacterial cells and increased production of structural elements of the cell wall and cell membrane. In addition, to increase the number of molecules related to restoration of redox balance, the rearrangements of the cell envelope were the first defense mechanisms observed under usnic acid treatment.IMPORTANCE The evaluation of mechanisms of mycobacterial response to natural products has been barely studied. However, it might be helpful to reveal bacterial adaptation strategies, which are eventually crucial for the discovery of new drug targets and, hence, understanding the resistance mechanisms. This study showed that the first-line mycobacterial defense against usnic acid, a potent antimicrobial agent, is the remodeling of the cell envelope and restoring redox homeostasis. Transcriptomic data correlated with metabolomics analysis. The observed metabolic changes appeared similar to those exerted by antibiotics.

Abstract
Control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection continues to be an issue, particularly in countries with a high tuberculosis (TB) burden in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. The effort to reduce the catastrophic cost of TB with the WHO’s End TB Strategy in 2035 is still obstructed by the emergence of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) cases as result of various mutations of the MTB strain. In the approach to combat DR-TB, several potential antitubercular agents were discovered as inhibitors for various existing and novel targets. Host-directed therapy and immunotherapy also gained attention as the drug-susceptibility level of the pathogen can be reduced due to the pathogen’s evolutionary dynamics. This review is focused on the current progress and challenges in DR-TB treatment. We briefly summarized antitubercular compounds that are under development and trials for both DR-TB drug candidates and host-directed therapy. We also highlighted several problems in DR-TB diagnosis, the treatment regimen, and drug discovery that have an impact on treatment adherence and treatment failure.
