Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may be an 'idiom' of psychological distress in Confucian heritage cultures (CHCs). OBJECTIVES This systematic review/meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of TMDs in CHCs and compared the differences in TMD occurrence between time periods and age groups. Additionally, the associated biopsychosocial risk factors were also examined. METHODS The study protocol was developed a priori following the PRISMA guidelines and Joanna Briggs Institute systematic review methodology (CRD42021245526). Electronic searches of seven databases were conducted from January 2002 to Dec 2021. Reference lists of identified studies were hand-searched for additional articles. Study selection, quality assessment, and data extraction were done. Meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS Forty-eight articles were included in the systematic review. Overall prevalences were: TMDs-15% (95% CI: 15-16%); TMD pain-8% (95% CI: 7-9%); TMJ sounds-24% (95% CI: 21-27%); and TMJ locking-7% (95% CI: 1-13%). While TMD prevalence appeared to have declined from 2002 to 2011 to 2012-2021, the occurrence of TMD pain, TMJ sounds, and locking increased marginally or remained constant. TMD prevalence in children/adolescents was 18% (95% CI: 14-22%) and 17% (95% CI: 16-18%) among adults. Significant associations between TMDs and bruxism/psychological distress/education levels were specified by 73%/90%/88% of the relevant studies. CONCLUSIONS TMDs are prevalent in CHCs and a slight increase in TMD pain (2%) and TMJ sounds (8%) were discerned over the past two decades. TMDs are related to a myriad of biopsychosocial variables, particularly psychological distress, and these factors must be addressed within the cultural context of patients.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the associations between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) components, consequences, and related conditions. This research analyzed data from the Dental, Oral, Medical Epidemiological (DOME) records-based study which integrated comprehensive socio-demographic, medical, and dental databases from a nationwide sample of dental attendees aged 18-50 years at military dental clinics for 1 year. Statistical and machine learning models were performed with TMDs as the dependent variable. The independent variables included age, sex, smoking, each of the MetS components, and consequences and related conditions, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), obesity, cardiac disease, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), transient ischemic attack (TIA), stroke, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), and anemia. The study included 132,529 subjects, of which 1899 (1.43%) had been diagnosed with TMDs. The following parameters retained a statistically significant positive association with TMDs in the multivariable binary logistic regression analysis: female sex [OR = 2.65 (2.41-2.93)], anemia [OR = 1.69 (1.48-1.93)], and age [OR = 1.07 (1.06-1.08)]. Features importance generated by the XGBoost machine learning algorithm ranked the significance of the features with TMDs (the target variable) as follows: sex was ranked first followed by age (second), anemia (third), hypertension (fourth), and smoking (fifth). Metabolic morbidity and anemia should be included in the systemic evaluation of TMD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association between jaw function and income in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore this association and its relationship with anxiety and depression. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 451 TMD patients, including 361 males and 90 females, participated in this study. The sociodemographic information of patients and their questionnaires including the Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item (PHQ-9), and Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-8 (JFLS-8) were collected. Patients were divided into the high-income and low-income groups based on a household per capita income of 6000 RMB per month. Multiple regression and mediation analysis were used to explore the association between variables. The bootstrap method was applied to estimate confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Higher JFLS-8 scores were significantly correlated with higher GAD-7 scores (r = 0.361, p < .001), PHQ-9 scores (r = 0.339, p < .001). Females and patients with low income had statistically higher JFLS-8 scores (p < .01, p < .001). Mediation analysis with 10 000 bootstrap simulations revealed a significant direct association between JFLS-8 scores and income (-2.920, 95% CI [-4.757, -1.044], p = .002). A significant indirect association of JFLS-8 scores with income via GAD-7 scores and PHQ-9 scores was also observed (-0.889, 95% CI [-1.728, -0.164], p = .025), accounting for 23.3% of the total association. CONCLUSIONS Low income is associated with impaired jaw function via anxiety and depression in patients with TMD. Clinicians may need to pay more attention to the psychological status of low-income TMD patients in clinical practice.

Abstract
Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is increasingly used in treating masticatory muscle pain disorder; however, safe doses and reinjection intervals still need to be established. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the degree and duration of the impairment of masticatory muscle performance. Fifty-seven subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one of which received BoNT-A first (n = 28) while the other received saline first (n = 29), with the cross-over being in week 16, and a total follow-up period of 32 weeks. A total dose of 50 U of BoNT-A was injected in the masseter and temporal muscles bilaterally. Electromyographic (EMG) activity and bite forces were assessed. A significant reduction in EMG activity was observed up to week 18 (p ≤ 001), with total recovery at week 33. A significant reduction in maximum bite force was observed up to week 11 (p ≤ 005), with total recovery at week 25. In conclusion, when treating masticatory muscle pain disorder with 50 U of BoNT-A, a reinjection interval of 33 weeks can be considered safe since the recovery of muscle function occurs by that time.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders are a multifactorial disease. Occlusal support and the number of teeth in dentition have significant effects on the masticatory system. The current study aims to review the role of occlusal support in association with findings of temporomandibular disorders. Data sources were PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar, with 1411 citations published over the period 1992–2019. The selection criteria stipulated that articles must have reported the association between the number of teeth, occlusal unit, occlusal support and temporomandibular disorders. A total of 15 full-text articles was finally accessed for eligibility in the current review. The studies on temporomandibular disorders were collected from various sources, including articles reporting temporomandibular disorder symptoms ( n=1), temporomandibular disorder signs ( n=5), temporomandibular joint osseous changes ( n=1), temporomandibular joint dysfunction using the Helkimo index ( n=2), and temporomandibular disorder classification ( n=6). Of these articles, significant associations were found between: the number of missing teeth and temporomandibular disorders ( n=5); the number of occlusal units and occlusal supports and temporomandibular disorders ( n=3); the position of the lost occlusal units and temporomandibular disorders ( n=1). Loss of the occlusal unit has more impact on temporomandibular disorders than the loss of posterior teeth. The total loss of unilateral occlusal support seems to be an aetiological factor for temporomandibular disorders, and maintenance of balanced posterior occlusal support has a role in the prevention and management of temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of symptoms indicative of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in an adult population in Troms County in Northern Norway, as well as the associations between TMD and socio‐demographic factors, dental status, self‐reported general, and oral health as well as oral health related quality of life (OHQoL). Methods Data were collected from a structured questionnaire and a clinical examination of a random sample of almost 2000 adults, 20–79‐year‐old, in Troms County in Northern Norway. Results Women had a higher prevalence of all self‐reported and clinical signs of pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular complex compared to men. For both genders, sounds from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) upon clinical examination was the most common symptom, followed by pain to palpation of jaw muscles. Headache was the most common of the self‐reported symptoms and sounds from the TMJ the second most common. Young women had a higher prevalence of self‐reported headache and jaw‐ and face pain compared to middle‐aged and elderly women. TMD‐related symptoms of pain were significantly associated with poor self‐reported general health and correlated with OHQoL as assessed by the oral health impact profile 14 questionnaire. Conclusion Being women and having moderate to poor self‐reported general health were associated with clinical signs and self‐reported symptoms of pain in the jaw, face and head region. Self‐reported symptoms of TMD correlated more strongly with OHQoL than clinical signs.

Abstract
Studies on the role of physical fitness, physical activity and obesity as risk factors for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are scarce. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of TMD symptoms with physical fitness, physical activity and body mass index (BMI) among Finnish conscripts. The study sample consisted of 8685 Finnish conscripts. Data on self-reported TMD symptoms were used as outcome variables. Physical activity (questionnaire), physical fitness (measured with physical tests: Cooper test, push-ups, sit-ups and standing long jump) and body mass index (BMI) were used as explanatory variables. The associations between TMD symptoms and explanatory variables were evaluated using Chi-squared test and logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of all TMD symptoms was significantly higher among those who exercised more rarely than weekly. Pain-related TMD symptoms were also significantly more frequent among those who were overweight (BMI ≥ 25). Poor push-up results and overweight (BMI ≥ 25) were significantly associated with jaw pain and TMJ pain at jaw rest. The present study showed that good physical fitness may be a protective factor against TMD pain. Dentists should also be prepared to motivate TMD patients to physical activity and regular exercise as part of the treatment.

Abstract
Background The objectives of this study were to study the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and its association with anxiety, depression, and stress among the general Lebanese population as well as in a sample of patients recruited from an otolaryngologist clinic. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2018 and December 2019, which enrolled 459 participants from all districts of Lebanon (sample 1) and 37 patients from the otolaryngologist clinic at the Eye and Ear Hospital (sample 2). The temporomandibular disorder screening checklist was used to screen for temporomandibular joint disorder. The Fonseca’s anamnestic index was used to assess for temporomandibular joint disorder related signs and symptoms, as well as for symptoms severity. Results The results showed that 19.7% of the general Lebanese population had TMD, from which 55.9% were female. In contrast, 59.5% of patients in the sample recruited from the clinic were found to have TMD. Higher stress, anxiety, and depression scores were associated with higher temporomandibular disorder severity score (B = 0.23; B = 0.10 and B = 0.10 respectively). Patients in the sample recruited from the clinic had higher mean stress (20.75 vs 11.43), anxiety (12.46 vs 5.78), depression (13.24 vs 6.52), and temporomandibular disorder severity scores (59.5% vs 19.7%) than the general population. Conclusion Temporomandibular joint disorder appears to be associated significantly with depression, anxiety, and stress and remains largely underdiagnosed in the general population.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorder in people with Parkinson’s disease in a public university hospital, and relate it to sociodemographic factors, general health and oral health self-report, and phase and time of illness. Methods: the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders were used. The sample was classified according to the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder and associated with the variables. The odds ratio of Chi-square was applied with a 95% confidence interval and a level of significance set at p<0.05. Results: 110 people presented with Parkinson's disease were assessed. The prevalence of temporomandibular disorder was 35%, being more frequent among males (58%), in elderly people (53%), in phase 2 of the disease (61%), click (37%) being the predominant clinical indication. Of the variables analyzed, only gender and self-perception of oral health showed to be associated with temporomandibular disorders. Conclusion: the presence of temporomandibular disorder has been observed in people with Parkinson's disease, and the fact of being male and reporting moderate oral health seen as associated factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between risk factors and pain-related symptoms and clinical signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in Northern Finland Birth Cohort (NFBC) 1966. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 1962 subjects (1050 women, 912 men) attended the follow-up study. The questionnaires included the subjects' background information concerning living conditions and general health, socioeconomic factors, and dental health. The clinical examination was performed using the modified protocol of Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) presented at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Conference in 2010. Cross-tabulation, a chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used to analyze differences between groups. RESULTS Female gender showed statistically significant association with symptoms and signs of TMD, while marital status, living conditions, and socioeconomic group showed no association. A strong association was found between self-reported health condition as well as general health problems [i.e. depression, migraine, fibromyalgia (FM), gastrointestinal diseases] and TMD pain-related symptoms and pain on palpation in the masticatory muscles and TMJs. CONCLUSION In conclusion, general health problems and female gender had a strong association with pain-related symptoms and clinical signs of TMD. These findings are important to take into account when diagnosing and treating TMD patients. Conversely to earlier presented results, no statistically significant association was shown here between marital status, living conditions or socioeconomic group and pain-related symptoms and clinical signs of TMD.

Abstract
Objective Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have been associated with other chronic painful conditions (e.g., fibromyalgia, headache) and suicide and mood disorders. Here we examined musculoskeletal, painful, and mental health comorbidities in men vs women veterans with TMD (compared with non-TMD musculoskeletal disorders [MSDs] cases), as well as comorbidity patterns within TMD cases. Design Observational cohort. Setting National Veterans Health Administration. Subjects A cohort of 4.1 million veterans having 1+ MSDs, entering the cohort between 2001 and 2011. Methods Chi-square tests, t tests, and logistic regression were utilized for cross-sectional analysis. Results Among veterans with any MSD, those with TMD were younger and more likely to be women. The association of TMD with race/ethnicity differed by sex. Odds of TMD were higher in men of Hispanic ethnicity (OR = 1.38, 95% CI = 1.27-1.48) and nonwhite race/ethnicity other than black or Hispanic (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.16-1.45) compared with white men. Odds of TMD were significantly lower for black (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.49-0.60) and Hispanic women (OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.73-0.995) relative to white women. Non-MSD comorbidities (e.g., irritable bowel syndrome, mental health, headaches) were significantly associated with TMD in male veterans; their pattern was similar in women. Veterans with back pain, nontraumatic joint disorder, or osteoarthritis had more MSD multimorbidity than those with TMD. Conclusions Complex patterns of comorbidity in TMD cases may indicate different underlying mechanisms of association in subgroups or phenotypes, thereby suggesting multiple targets to improve TMD. Longitudinal comprehensive studies powered to look at sex and racial/ethnic groupings are needed to identify targets to personalize care.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the association between work-related factors and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among female full-time employees using representative data from a national population-based survey. Methods Data from the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV (2007–2009) were used to analyze 1,612 women. Complex samples logistic regression was applied for adjusting for general characteristics and work-related factors to examine the association between work-related factors and TMD. Results The prevalence of TMD was 12.8% in this study population. With respect to age, educational status, marital status, problem drinking, exercise, and stress, there were statistically significant differences in the prevalence of TMD. In logistic regression analyses on complex samples, based on 40 h or less per week, odds ratios (ORs) for respondents who worked 40–48 working hours, 49–60 working hours, and more than 60 h were 1.16 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.69–1.94), 1.41 (95% CI 0.79–2.54), and 2.43 (95% CI 1.29–4.59), after adjusting for general characteristics, working schedule, employment status, and occupation. Conclusions This study found that long working hours were significantly associated with TMD in Korean female full-time employees.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze dentist's clinical decision-making related to treatment need for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in an adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population comprised 779 randomly selected 35, 50, 65 and 75 year old individuals living in the county of Västerbotten, Sweden. The participants filled out a questionnaire and were examined clinically according to a structured protocol. The four examiners (two men, two women) were experienced dentists and were calibrated before the start of the study. After examination they individually assessed the need of treatment owing to TMD. RESULTS In total, 15% of the study population was considered to have a treatment need owing to TMD. The highest estimate was noted for 35 and 50 years old women and the lowest for 65 and 75 years old men. Overall, 21% of the women and 8% of the men were considered to have a treatment need owing to TMD, with statistically significant differences between men and women for the 35 and 50 years old groups. Inter-individual variations in dentists' decisions were observed. In a multivariate analysis, female gender, signs and symptoms of TMD pain, signs and symptoms of TMD dysfunction and smoking were associated with estimated treatment need. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of estimated treatment need owing to TMD was fairly high, but the dentists' clinical decision-making process showed large inter-individual variability. The observation calls for further research on the factors affecting the decision-making process in care providers.
