Usefulness of Yoga in the management of tinnitus during COVID-19: A narrative review

The emergence of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19) has resulted in an unprecedented global health crisis. Tinnitus is the most commonly reported symptom when the COVID-19 impacts the auditory-vestibular system. There are a variety of management strategies for amelioration of tinnitus including Yoga. The present review deals with three issues: one, occurrence of tinnitus in persons affected by COVID-19; two, the impact of COVID-19 situation on tinnitus severity; and three, the potential of Yoga as an intervention strategy. Literature search was carried out through search engines like PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science and Google scholar using keywords like 'tinnitus', 'COVID-19' and 'Yoga'. The relevant studies were identified and the findings summarized in a narrative manner. Based on the evidence obtained in the present review, the authors propose that yoga can be used as an effective strategy in overcoming the psychosocial factors associated with COVID-19 particularly in this pandemic and related lockdown situation. It is also proposed here that teleyoga can serve as a practical, feasible and safe mode for providing therapeutic services for tinnitus-related issues particularly in the present pandemic situation.

The Effects of Yoga in Patients Suffering from Subjective Tinnitus

Introduction  Tinnitus is a perception of sound in the absence of an external source and it is a distressing issue. Yoga is a system of mind-body practices with the goal of uniting the body, mind and soul. It has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress, as well as improving the quality of life. Objective  The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of yoga in patients suffering from chronic subjective tinnitus. Methods  Twelve subjects previously diagnosed with chronic subjective tinnitus were selected for the study. The patients were asked to attend to yoga classes once a week and to practice yoga at home using a worksheet for 3 months. Each yoga class consisted of body exercises (asana), breathing (pranayama) and meditation (shavasana and yoga nidra). Tinnitus scores before and after the yoga classes were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Results  Among the 12 patients, there were 4 men and 8 women and their mean age was 52.5 years. The median duration of tinnitus among the group was 5.4 years. There were statistically significant differences in the stress ( p  = 0.01), handicap ( p  = 0.004) and severity ( p  = 0.007) questionnaires scores. Conclusion  This study indicated that yoga practices may reduce life stress and symptoms of subjective tinnitus.

Intratympanic gentamicin in Menière's disease: the impact on tinnitus

Intratympanic administration of gentamicin for the treatment of intractable Menière's disease can achieve relief of vertigo. However, the effect of gentamicin on tinnitus has been less well identified. and conflicting results have been reported. Intratympanic gentamicin therapy was given to 25 patients with Menière's disease for the control of vertigo, and the effect of the therapy on tinnitus was evaluated by a 10-point scale and a modified tinnitus questionnaire. It was found that the tinnitus decreased in four patients (16%) and disappeared in three patients (12%) at follow-up. The effect of gentamicin on tinnitus presented intersubject variability, and no correlation was found between the amount of gentamicin injected and its effect on tinnitus.
