Conjugated lateral eye movements and EEG: a study on schizophrenic and depressive patients

Lateral gaze aversions which follow reflective or thought provoking questions are called conjugated lateral eye movements (CLEMs). This response was studied in 20 schizophrenic patients, 20 depressive patients and 20 healthy controls. Frontal and parietal EEG measures were recorded simultaneously with the question/answer task. There were no differences in CLEMs among the 3 groups. Schizophrenic and depressive patients demonstrated a significantly reduced EEG-power on the left and an increased power on the right in comparison with healthy controls. This may point to a functional interhemispheric ‘disconnection’ in patients. Comparative correlations revealed EEG-power increase during the occurrence of contralateral CLEMs in the whole 10 min task.

Schizotypy and hemisphericity

There is considerable evidence that schizophrenia spectrum disorders are associated with a variety of abnormal asymmetries of brain structure, function, and behavior. Schizotypy is a personality trait dimension extending into the normal range, which at its extreme, is associated with a vulnerability to schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Schizotypy in the normal range is also associated with a variety of neurobiological characteristics associated with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including abnormal brain and behavioral asymmetries. Previous studies have suggested that normal schizotypy (as well as belief in the paranormal) is associated with an increased reliance on the right hemisphere in a variety of tasks. Hemisphericity is a trait-related characteristic preference for the cognitive mode of one or the other cerebral hemispheres, putatively related to hemispheric activation asymmetry. A sample of 256 undergraduates was administered five schizotypy scales, as well as three hemisphericity measures. Higher schizotypy scores were associated with an increase in right hemisphericity and a decrease in integrated hemisphericity. Although the construct of hemisphericity has been criticized, there is evidence to suggest that questionnaire and eye movement measures of hemisphericity may yet have construct validity, and further research on hemisphericity may be warranted.

Quantitative assessment of five behavioural laterality measures: distributions of scores and intercorrelations among right-handers

Five behavioural laterality measures (degree of right-handedness, ear dominance, ocular dominance, line bisection performance, and lateral preference as assessed by preferred direction of conjugate lateral eye movements) were analysed in 1171 right-handers by merging data from 15 different samples. All laterality aspects were assessed quantitatively by using well controlled performance measures instead of questionnaires. The distributions and intercorrelations of the measures as well as their test-retest reliabilities were examined. Results show moderately high reliabilities for all measures, and clearly demonstrate considerable variability among dextrals in the direction and magnitude of the obtained behavioural laterality measures. Most importantly, independence of the different measures questions some common assumptions in laterality research. It seems unlikely, for instance, that handedness and other aspects of laterality may be a product of one single underlying mechanism of brain lateralisation.

Manipulation of frontal brain asymmetry by cognitive tasks

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether verbal fluency tasks may specifically induce relatively greater left than right hemispheric activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The effectiveness of the manipulation was evaluated by EEG, which was recorded during performance of the verbal fluency task and during two control conditions, i.e., a baseline condition without cognitive demands, and a mental arithmetic task, respectively. The results demonstrate that the desired effect can only be achieved in individuals with good performance on the verbal fluency task. Good and poor performers do not only differ in lateral asymmetry, but also in the most affected region within the prefrontal cortex. Whereas good performers show relatively increased activation in the cortical region and hemisphere putatively most specialized for this kind of task (i.e., the left dorsolateral frontal cortex), poor performers show a marked shift of frontopolar asymmetry to the right.

Long-term reversal of hemispheric specialization for visual memory in a split-brain macaque

Accuracy of response and pattern of ocular fixations in three split-brain macaques were used to evaluate performance of each hemisphere in a continuous visual recognition task. The animal indicated by ocular fixation upon response points whether a displayed image or face was 'NEW' or 'OLD'. An inadvertent lesion of cingulate gyrus severely reduced contralateral fixations and impaired performance of the affected hemisphere in one animal, confirming the inferred relation between hemisphere and laterality of fixations. The hemispheres in the other two animals were initially remarkably similar in accuracy with human faces and with images; but the right hemisphere was significantly superior to the left for macaque faces. Parallel to this, in the one animal tested while simultaneously using both eyes/hemispheres, fixations were made primarily on the left half of human and macaque faces (right hemispheric control), whereas for images the ocular fixations were predominantly focused on the right half. However, after further, extensive training the left hemisphere performed with significantly greater accuracy than the right on all material and this shift was accompanied and further corroborated by a reversal of the fixational pattern to favor the right half of faces, as continued to be the case with images. Thus, over the long term both the pattern of ocular fixations and the accuracy of performance demonstrate a migration from right to left hemispheric dominance as familiarity with the task increased. Performance of the initially superior hemisphere actually diminished with this shift, presenting a uniquely puzzling question of hemispheric balance in the absence of the forebrain commissures.

Bilateral electrodermal activity: relationships to state and trait characteristics of hemisphere asymmetry

Influences of trait and state characteristics of individual brain lateralization on bilateral electrodermal activity (EDA) were examined. EDA was observed in two different recording conditions: (1) non-specific skin conductance responses (ns.SCRs) were obtained during a stimulus-free recording period of 5 min; and (2) stimulus evoked skin conductance responses (SCRs) were elicited by 80 dichotically presented pairs of pure tones which--at the same time--constituted the items of a test to estimate subject's lateral ear dominance. In addition to ear dominance, degree of right-handedness and hemispheric preference, i.e. preferred direction of conjugate lateral eye movements (CLEMs) were assessed as trait-like characteristics of individual laterality. With respect to asymmetry of ns.SCRs, no effects of the laterality variables were observed. Analysis of SCRs, however, resulted in significant interactions of ear dominance and hemispheric preference with degree of right-handedness indicating higher SCR amplitudes on the hand contralateral to the preferred hemisphere in strong dextrals. Weak right-handers showed a different pattern of bilateral asymmetries, partly in the opposite direction. Additionally, phasic effects of cortical asymmetry on SCRs seem to be modified by trait characteristics of individual laterality. Results underline the importance of precisely controlling degree of handedness in studies of bilateral electrodermal activity. Furthermore, the observed effects support the assumption of cortical influences on EDA, but argue against the existence of a single cortical mechanism modulating asymmetries in the electrodermal system.

Left movers' advantage in heartbeat discrimination: a replication and extension

Lateral eye movers are subjects who consistently shift their gaze either leftward or rightward while reflecting on visuospatial or verbal questions. When reliably assessed, prevalent direction of gaze can be assumed as a valid index of hemispheric asymmetry. The present study evaluated discrimination of heartbeat (HB) and of spontaneous changes of finger temperature in 24 right-handed females reliably selected as lateral movers. Results replicate and extend previous findings by showing that left movers' superiority in HB discrimination is present also in females and concerns the perception of a different vascular function, that is, peripheral finger temperature. Differences between right movers and left movers were not due to activation level during the test or to body composition.

Prevalent direction of reflective lateral eye movements and ear asymmetries in a dichotic test of musical chords

Subjects who consistently move their gaze either to the right or to the left while reflecting on visuo-spatial or verbal questions are usually called "lateral eye movers". This study evaluated auditory asymmetries to a dichotic test of musical chords in 23 right-handed females, selected through test-retest as reliable lateral eye movers; 12 were "left movers" (LMs) and 11 were "right movers" (RMs). During the assessment of the prevalent direction of gaze as well as during the dichotic test, the oculomotor activity was controlled through a video camera. The hypothesis was that the left ear advantage usually found with dichotic chords is enhanced in LMs and reduced in RMs, and that this effect is not due to the facilitating influence of lateral eye movements occurring during the task. Results show that: (a) left movers exhibit a marked advantage of the left ear while right movers do not exhibit any significant ear advantage; (b) despite the instruction to fix a central point, lateral movers tend to show unwarranted eye movements in their usual direction; (c) the effect of the prevalent direction of gaze on the dichotic advantage is not due to eye movements made during the dichotic test. These findings give further support to the hypothesis that the tendency to consistently shift the gaze to one side is related to hemispheric asymmetries as measured by lateralized tests.

Hemispheric preference and lateral eye movements evoked by bilateral visual stimuli

This study investigated the relationship between the direction of lateral eye shifts evoked by bilateral visual stimulation, on the one hand, and verbal vs visuospatial performance, on the other. In males a negative correlation was found between verbal relative to spatial accuracy and the ratio of leftward eye movements. No such relationship was found in females. Additionally, in males body mass index was smaller for those who displayed a greater ratio of leftward eye movements. It was concluded that visually evoked lateral eye shifts might reflect hemispheric preference, similarly as lateral eye movements obtained during the widely used questioning procedure. However, the procedure used in this study for evoking lateral eye shifts seems to be free of some methodological problems of the traditional procedure and is more easy to standardize.

Bilateral electrodermal activity: reliability, laterality and individual differences

A first aim of the present study was to estimate the short- and long-term stability of individual response patterns in bilateral electrodermal activity (EDA). A second aim was to examine the relationship of individual brain laterality to both peak amplitude and peak time based electrodermal asymmetry. Additionally, subjects were presented with verbal and spatial tasks to estimate the balance of left/right asymmetry in cerebral activation at time of testing. Finally, the influence of smoking, coffee consumption and subjective circadian phase (morningness/eveningness, subjects' rise time) on bilateral asymmetry and EDA lability was examined. Results indicated moderate to high short-term reliabilities of EDA laterality coefficients, but insufficient long-term stability. Handedness and conjugate lateral eye movements (CLEMs) were not related to asymmetry of EDA, but a significant interaction between CLEM tendency and smoking/nonsmoking on laterality of both EDA parameters was observed. Amount of coffee consumption was also significantly related to electrodermal asymmetry. Analysis of performance data demonstrated that intraindividual shifts of EDA laterality from one recording session to a following one were associated with corresponding shifts in accuracy of verbal/spatial performance. Degree of subjects' electrodermal lability differentiated significantly between speed and accuracy of performance in both verbal and spatial tasks, and was substantially related to subjects' rise time.

Lateral preference and neuropsychological correlates of schizotypy

A battery of 11 schizotypy questionnaires was administered to 316 male undergraduates. The scores of the 266 white subjects were subjected to a principal components analysis, and 73 subjects scoring at the upper and lower ends of the factor score distribution based on the first unrotated component were recalled for neuropsychological testing. The battery of neuropsychological tests consisted of four tests of motoric performance, four subtests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, the conjugate lateral eye movement test, and a lateral preference questionnaire. Subjects high on schizotypy did not differ from low scorers on overall neuropsychological performance or performance asymmetries. High scorers did show a sinistral shift in hand and foot preference and more crossed dominance compared with controls. Asians scored significantly higher than whites on several schizotypy scales, raising the question of a possible ethnic bias in these measures.

The influence of monocular viewing on heart period variability

Monocular viewing seems to differentially activate the cerebral hemispheres. Viewing with only one eye is accompanied by a relatively greater activation of the contralateral hemisphere. In this study heart periods were measured during binocular, left and right monocular viewing in 29 right-handed males. Power spectral analysis of heart period variability showed that the amount of heart rate fluctuations in the 0.07-0.13 Hz frequency range (the mid-frequency peak of the spectrum) depends on the viewing eye. Only viewing with the left eye produced a significant increase of the mid-frequency peak. It is known that sympathetic activity contributes strongly to the mid-frequency component of the heart rate. Therefore, it is concluded that the effects of left monocular viewing result in an increased sympathetic influence on the sinoatrial node.
