Research methods in complementary and alternative medicine: an integrative review

The scientific literature presents a modest amount of evidence in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). On the other hand, in practice, relevant results are common. The debates among CAM practitioners about the quality and execution of scientific research are important. Therefore, the aim of this review is to gather, synthesize and describe the differentiated methodological models that encompass the complexity of therapeutic interventions. The process of bringing evidence-based medicine into clinical practice in CAM is essential for the growth and strengthening of complementary medicines worldwide.

Using correlational analyses to improve prevention strategies based on survey data from youth

Community coalition prevention models often select interventions based on the types of risk factors (outcome predictors) that are elevated. Variances and correlations between predictors and targeted behaviors also may vary between communities and provide information to improve the selection of interventions. Community differences in risk factor levels and correlations between predictors and problem behaviors were examined using a child self-report computer assessment (ALEXSA); prevention.psu.edu/people/ALEXSA.htm). Three school-based subsamples of children were studied. Means, prevalences, and correlations differed significantly between samples. Discussion addresses developmental considerations and illustrates how correlations between predictors and problem behaviors might improve the selection of interventions. This study is preliminary and should be replicated with larger community samples, more indicated/selected sample, and in more communities.

One size does not fit all: aptitude x treatment interaction (ATI) as a conceptual framework for complementary and alternative medicine outcome research. Part 1--what is ATI research?

When multiple treatment choices are available, the question is not just "which treatment is the best?" but more importantly "best or better for whom, when, and why?" Aptitude (or attribute) by treatment interaction (ATI) is a research paradigm that attempts to examine exactly that--how outcome depends on the match or mismatch between patients' specific characteristics and the treatment they receive. The purpose of this two-part paper is to introduce ATI methods as a conceptual framework into complementary and alternative medicine/integrative medicine (CAM/IM) outcome research. Part 1 presents key concepts in ATI research. Part 2 will present ATI research designs and discusses their applications to the examination of the relationships between individuals and therapies, and the illumination of the mechanisms that make therapies differentially effective. Based on this examination, we conclude that ATI research offers invaluable insights into the multifaceted package of care typically delivered in contemporary medicine and therefore should be included in the portfolio of all CAM/IM outcome research.
