Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by T cell infiltration at lesion sites. T cell migration is greatly facilitated by chemokines produced by epithelial cells. Studies have noted the potential role of glutamine uptake in OLP and other inflammatory diseases. Here, we investigated the effect of altered glutamine uptake of epithelial cells on T cell infiltration and its underlying mechanisms in OLP. METHODS Immunohistochemistry was used to identify the expressions of glutamine transporter alanine-serine-cysteine transporter 2 (ASCT2) and C-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5) in oral tissues of OLP and healthy controls. Human gingival epithelial cells (HGECs) were treated with glutamine deprivation and ASCT2 inhibiter GPNA respectively to detect the expressions of CCL5 and its related signaling molecules. Additionally, we had determined the impact of epithelial cell-derived CCL5 on T-cell migration using a co-culture system in vitro. RESULTS ASCT2 and CCL5 expressions in OLP were significantly higher than healthy controls and positively correlated with the density of inflammatory infiltrations. Glutamine supplement significantly increased CCL5 production in HGECs, which was effectively inhibited by GPNA. Besides, glutamine could inhibit reactive oxygen species (ROS) production to activate the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) causing higher expression level of CCL5 in HGECs. Simultaneously, T cell migration could be blocked by anti-CCL5 neutralizing antibody and STAT3 inhibitor stattic in the co-culture system. CONCLUSION The upregulated ASCT2-mediated glutamine uptake in epithelial cells promotes CCL5 production via ROS-STAT3 signaling, which boosts the T-cell infiltration in OLP lesion.

Abstract
Phototherapy incorporating photobiomodulation therapy and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy has been utilised as antioxidants in symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP) management; however, its role of intervention remains controversial. The aim of this systematic review of CRD42021227788 PROSPERO (an international prospective register of systematic reviews in health and social care) registration number was to oversee and determine phototherapy efficacy in patients with symptomatic OLP, identifying and bridging the literature gaps by proposing recommendations for future studies. A search strategy was developed in consistent with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Various electronic databases were exercised to search for randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Several search engines were employed to analyse a total of 177 studies of which nine included. A wide range of utilised laser and light-emitted diode wavelengths between 630 and 808 nm and irradiance ranged between 10 and 13 mW/cm2 were noted. 67% of studies reported a high risk of bias and a high heterogeneity obtained from numerical data for quantitative analysis, therefore meta-analysis was impossible to conduct. Despite inconsistency and diversity in phototherapy parameters, treatment protocols, photosensitiser (type, concentration and method of application) and outcome assessment tools, the majority of the studies showed positive results compared with standard care treatments. Hence, a necessity to perform well-designed RCTs with robust methodology is warranted, after acknowledging the current drawbacks and addressing the suggested recommendations highlighted in our review. Moreover, advanced knowledge in understanding further phototherapy-antioxidants molecular mechanistic in symptomatic OLP is required.

Abstract
Aims: This study aimed to systematically review the efficacy and safety of antioxidants for patients with Oral lichen planus (OLP). Methods: Databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Google Scholar, were searched up to 30 April 2022, for randomized controlled trials on the antioxidant therapy of OLP. The following endpoints were analyzed: pain score, clinical score, pain resolution rate, clinical resolution rate, and adverse effects. Results: A total of 19 studies met the inclusion criteria, and 17 studies with 704 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The findings showed that antioxidant therapy could significantly reduce the pain score [standardized mean difference -0.72 (-1.36, -0.07), P = 0.03, I2 = 87%, PI2 < 0.00001] and clinical score [SMD -2.06 (-3.06, -1.06), P < 0.0001, I2 = 94%, PI2 < 0.00001] of patients with OLP and improve the pain resolution rate [risk ratio (RR) 1.15 (1.01, 1.31), P = 0.04, I2 = 45%, PI2 = 0.09] and clinical resolution rate [RR 1.40 (1.10, 1.78), P = 0.006, I2 = 72%, PI2 = 0.002]. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that antioxidant therapy was beneficial for patients with OLP, and antioxidants might be used to treat OLP. Abstract
Cell death is an essential process that plays a vital role in restoring and maintaining skin homeostasis. It supports recovery from acute injury and infection and regulates barrier function and immunity. Cell death can also provoke inflammatory responses. Loss of cell membrane integrity with lytic forms of cell death can incite inflammation due to the uncontrolled release of cell contents. Excessive or poorly regulated cell death is increasingly recognised as contributing to cutaneous inflammation. Therefore, drugs that inhibit cell death could be used therapeutically to treat certain inflammatory skin diseases. Programmes to develop such inhibitors are already underway. In this review, we outline the mechanisms of skin-associated cell death programmes; apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, NETosis, and the epidermal terminal differentiation programme, cornification. We discuss the evidence for their role in skin inflammation and disease and discuss therapeutic opportunities for targeting the cell death machinery.

Abstract
Oral leukoplakia, which presents as white lesions in the oral cavity, including on the tongue, is precancerous in nature. Conservative treatment is preferable, since surgical removal can markedly reduce the patient’s quality of life. In the present study, we focused on the flavonoid apigenin as a potential compound for preventing carcinogenesis, and an apigenin-loaded mucoadhesive oral film was prepared using a three-dimensional (3D) bioprinter (semi-solid extrusion-type 3D printer). Apigenin-loaded printer inks are composed of pharmaceutical excipients (HPMC, CARBOPOL, and Poloxamer), water, and ethanol to dissolve apigenin, and the appropriate viscosity of printer ink after adjusting the ratios allowed for the successful 3D printing of the film. After drying the 3D-printed object, the resulting film was characterized. The chemopreventive effect of the apigenin-loaded film was evaluated using an experimental rat model that had been exposed to 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) to induce oral carcinogenesis. Treatment with the apigenin-loaded film showed a remarkable chemopreventive effect based on an analysis of the specimen by immunohistostaining. These results suggest that the apigenin-loaded mucoadhesive film may help prevent carcinogenesis. This successful preparation of apigenin-loaded films by a 3D printer provides useful information for automatically fabricating other tailored films (with individual doses and shapes) for patients with oral leukoplakia in a future clinical setting.

Abstract
Oral lichen planus is a chronic non-infectious mucosal inflammatory disease caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species homeostasis and antioxidant defense systems. Notably, excessive oxidative stress products result in related autoimmune reactions. Further, it activates signaling pathways related to the development of oral lichen planus, as evidenced by the detection of damage to deoxyribonucleic acid, protein, and lipid. Thus, the mechanisms of reactive oxygen species-mediated oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus are numerous and complex. In this review, we first introduce oxidative stress and oxidative products. Then, we summarize the role and possible mechanisms of reactive oxygen species-mediated oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus and present a clinical correlation between oxidative stress and oral lichen planus. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a destructive disease of the tooth-surrounding tissues. Infection is the etiological cause of the disease, but its extent and severity depend on the immune–inflammatory response of the host. Immune cells use reactive oxygen species to suppress infections, and there is homeostasis between oxidative and antioxidant mechanisms during periodontal health. During periodontitis, however, increased oxidative stress triggers tissue damage, either directly by activating apoptosis and DNA damage or indirectly by activating proteolytic cascades. Periodontal treatment aims to maintain an infection and inflammation-free zone and, in some cases, regenerate lost tissues. Although mechanical disruption of the oral biofilm is an indispensable part of periodontal treatment, adjunctive measures, such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications, are also frequently used, especially in patients with suppressed immune responses. Recent studies have shown that probiotics activate antioxidant mechanisms and can suppress extensive oxidative stress via their ability to activate nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). The aim of this narrative review is to describe the essential role of Nrf2 in the maintenance of periodontal health and to propose possible mechanisms to restore the impaired Nrf2 response in periodontitis, with the aid of probiotic and postbiotics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS This study aims to access the effectiveness of mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy on the identification of the reticular form of OLP, following the assessment of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and oral mucosa transudate (OMT). MATERIAL AND METHODS The trial follows a case-control design. Samples were characterized through MIR spectroscopy and chemometric tools were applied to distinguish between case and control participants, further identifying the spectral regions with the highest contribution to the developed models. RESULTS MIR spectroscopy was capable to discriminate between OLP patients and controls with 95.1% and 85.4% of correct predictions, regarding GCF and OMT samples, respectively. Additionally, the spectral regions mostly contributing to the successful prediction were identified, and possibly related with the distinctive presence of amino acids/proteins and oxidative stress mediators in oral biofluids, supporting the role of the immune-inflammatory activation on OLP etiology and disease course. CONCLUSION MIR spectroscopy analysis of GCF and OMT may be regarded as an innovative, non-invasive, low cost and sensitive technique, contributing to the identification of the reticular from of OLP.

Abstract
Background: Oral lichen planus is a chronic, mucocutaneous, inflammatory disease, with an unknown etiology. Reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage to the tissues might be the cause. Malonaldehyde (MDA), a low molecular weight end product of lipid peroxidation reaction is a suitable biomarker of endogenous DNA damage. monitoring the oxidant-antioxidant status of saliva may serve as an efficient marker of disease development in oral lichen planus patients. Aim and Objectives: To evaluate salivary oxidative stress in oral lichen planus subject using MDA and compare it with control subjects. Furthermore, to compare MDA levels in erosive and hypertrophic lichen planus. Materials and Methods: The current study is case–control study. Unstimulated salivary samples in the morning hours were taken from oral lichen planus subjects (n = 25) and controls subjects without any oral disease (n = 25). The saliva was centrifuged at 900 g for 10 min at a temperature of 4°C. Then, the entire filtrate was transferred to Eppendorf test tubes and frozen at–80°C until analysis. Salivary MDA was done through thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay as per the protocol laid down by the manufacturer (Sigma Aldrich Lipid Peroxidation Assay Kit). Results: The data were expressed as the mean ± standard deviation and the statistical analysis was done using Student's t-test using SPSS version 21 IBM software. The salivary level of MDA was significantly higher than that of controls (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The higher level of MDA in patients with oral lichen planus suggests that free radicals and the resulting oxidative damage may be important in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus lesions.

Abstract
Background Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, which might be caused by oxidative stress and impaired antioxidant defense. Objective To systematically investigate the markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant systems in the saliva and blood from OLP patients and healthy controls. Methods The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase were systematically queried to collect data from studies in which oxidative stress/antioxidant markers from OLP and healthy subjects had been evaluated until March 10, 2021. Results A total of 28 studies fulfilled inclusion criteria, and 25 of them, having 849 OLP patients and 1,052 control subjects and analyzing 12 oxidative stress and antioxidant state marker levels, were subjected to meta-analysis. We found a significant decrease in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and uric acid (UA) and a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in the saliva and serum/plasma of OLP patients. Moreover, a significant elevation of 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and advanced oxidation protein product (AOOP) level and a decrease in vitamin C were also observed in the saliva of the OLP group. In contrast, salivary vitamin A, zinc, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), vitamin E, and nitrite were not significantly different between the two groups. In single studies, markers of oxidative stresses such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and 8-isoprostanelevels were elevated in OLP, and antioxidant parameters such as glutathione (GSH) and total protein (TP) levels were dysregulated. Conclusion This meta-analysis helps to clarify the profile of oxidative stress and antioxidant state markers in OLP patients although existing evidence is rather heterogeneous and many studies are affected by several limitations. Larger and more standardized studies are warranted to ascertain whether these markers are potential causes or effects of OLP and whether antioxidant therapy improving oxidative stress will be useful.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the effect of cortisol, estrogen, and nicotine on heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expressions at the level of normal oral mucosa keratinocyte cells. Methods In this in vitro study, keratinocytes were derived from rat oral cavity and cultured. Stressors were applied, including three groups, group 1: estrogen to simulate the postmenopausal state; group 2: cortisol to simulate psychological stress situation; group 3: nicotine to simulate smoking state. To determine the exact nature of keratinocyte cells, two surface markers, cytokeratin 18 and cytokeratin 14 were examined using the flow cytometry method. Then, the immunocytochemistry technique with three repetitions in each group was used to evaluate the HSP70 expression before and after applying the stressor. Results HSP70 expressions in the three stressor groups (estrogen, cortisol, and nicotine) were significantly lower than in the control group (p = 0.0001). The HSPs expression difference between cortisol and nicotine was statistically significant (p = 0.0001). Based on the results of MTT analysis, the mean cell viability of oral mucosal keratinocytes in all three intervention groups decreased compared to the control group. In the cortisol and nicotine groups, cell death was significantly higher than in the control group. In the estrogen group, cell death was significantly lower than in the nicotine group (p > 0.05). Conclusions The specific concentrations of cortisol, estrogen, and nicotine as stressors can effectively reduce the expression of HSP70 in normal oral mucosal keratinocytes. These phenomena can be effective in cell viability and the development of oral lichen planus.

Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic non-infectious, inflammatory, immunological disease. In contrast to skin lesions, which are often self-limiting, oral lesions rarely heal on their own and can be resistant to local and systemic treatments. In this clinical trial, hyaluronic acid (HA) was mixed with triamcinolone for intralesional injection to reduce side effects in the treatment of OLP. This randomized clinical trial with a split-mouth design was performed on 28 patients with OLP. The mouth was divided randomly into two sides: a test side, which received HA combined with triamcinolone, and a control side, which received triamcinolone alone. The rate of symptom recurrence was 74.1% on the control side and 11.1% on the test side (significant difference, P<0.01). Pain scores did not differ between the two groups when assessed after 2 weeks. The group treated with a combination of HA and triamcinolone experienced a significantly better resolution of lesions and symptoms. Considering the role of HA in tissue healing and in regulating inflammatory responses, as well as its antioxidant and hydration properties, it appears that HA could be effective in improving of OLP and decreasing the rate of symptom recurrence.

Abstract
The surface receptor for advanced glycosylation end-products (RAGE) and its soluble (sRAGE) and endogenous secretory (EN-RAGE) forms belong to the superfamily of toll-like receptors and play important roles in inflammation and autoimmunity, directly or through binding with advanced glycosylation end-products (AGE) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP). We reviewed the literature on the role of RAGE in skin diseases. Research in this field is still rather limited (28 articles) but suggests the involvement of RAGE and RAGE-related pathways in chronic inflammatory diseases (lupus, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and lichen planus), infectious diseases (leprosy, Staphylococcus aureus-induced skin lesions), alterations of the repairing processes in diabetic skin, systemic sclerosis, and ulcers. These data prompt further research in this field, which not only will be useful to better understand the pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases, but is also likely to have intriguing clinical implications. Indeed, when their role in the complex and multifactorial inflammatory balance will be adequately defined, RAGE and related molecules could be used as markers of disease severity and/or response to treatment. Moreover, future promising therapeutic perspectives could be topical administration of some of these molecules (e.g., sRAGE) to modulate local inflammatory response and/or the development of anti-RAGE antibodies for systemic treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a T-cell-mediated inflammatory disease with a risk of malignant transformation. Although the etiology of OLP is still uncertain, growing evidence suggests that oral microbiota, antigen-specific, and non-specific mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of OLP. Antigen-specific mechanisms include antigen presentation, T-cell activation, nuclear factor-kappa B signaling pathway, and cytokine secretion, while non-specific mechanisms consist of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-9 upregulation, psychological pressure, oxidative damage, aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRNAs), and autophagy. Till now, there is no cure for OLP, and the main purpose of OLP therapy is symptomatic control. FINDING Seafood and its derivative omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) can suppress antigen presentation, T-cell activation, and nuclear factor-kappa B signaling pathway, modulate the overexpressed inflammatory cytokines, inhibit the expression of MMP-9, as well as regulate the expression of miRNAs and autophagy. And they are possible agents for ameliorating psychological disorder and oxidative damage. Moreover, n-3 PUFAs supplementation has a beneficial effect on preventing tumorigenesis. CONCLUSION n-3 PUFAs consumption may provide a non-toxic, inexpensive administration for OLP.

Abstract
Saliva is a highly versatile biological fluid that is easy to gather in a non-invasive manner—and the results of its analysis complement clinical and histopathological findings in the diagnosis of multiple diseases. The objective of this review was to offer an update on the contribution of salivary biomarkers to the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases of the oral cavity, including oral lichen planus, periodontitis, Sjögren’s syndrome, oral leukoplakia, peri-implantitis, and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. Salivary biomarkers such as interleukins, growth factors, enzymes, and other biomolecules have proven useful in the diagnosis and follow-up of these diseases, facilitating the early evaluation of malignization risk and the monitoring of disease progression and response to treatment. However, further studies are required to identify new biomarkers and verify their reported role in the diagnosis and/or prognosis of oral diseases.

Abstract
The constant generation of reactive carbonyl species (RCSs) by lipid peroxidation during aerobic metabolism denotes their involvement in cell homeostasis. Skin represents the largest organ of the body that is exposed to lipid peroxidation. Previous studies have suggested the involvement of oxidative stress in the development of lichen planus (LP), a chronic inflammatory skin condition with a complex pathogenesis. The aim of our study is to investigate a panel of pro-oxidants (4-hydroxy-nonenal (4-HNE), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and malondialdehyde (MDA)), the total antioxidant status (TAS), and thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters (TDHP), including total thiol (TT), native thiol (NT), disulfides (DS), DS/NT ratio, DS/TT ratio, and NT/TT ratio. The comparative determinations of serum levels of 4-HNE, TBARS, and MDA in patients with LP (n = 31) and controls (n = 26) show significant differences between the two groups (4-HNE: 7.81 ± 1.96 µg/mL vs. 6.15 ± 1.17 µg/mL, p < 0.05, TBARS: 4.23 ± 0.59 µmol/L vs. 1.99 ± 0.23 µmol/L, p < 0.05, MDA: 32.3 ± 6.26 ng/mL vs. 21.26 ± 2.36 ng/mL). The serum levels of TAS are lower in LP patients compared to the control group (269.83 ± 42.63 µmol/L vs. 316.46 ± 28.76 µmol/L, p < 0.05). The serum levels of TDHP are altered in LP patients compared to controls (NT: 388.10 ± 11.32 µmol/L vs. 406.85 ± 9.32., TT: 430.23 ± 9.93 µmol/L vs. 445.88 ± 9.01 µmol/L, DS: 21.06 ± 1.76 µmol/L vs. 19.52 ± 0.77µmol/L). Furthermore, a negative association between pro-oxidants and TAS is identified (4-HNE - rho = -0.83, p < 0.01, TBARS - rho = -0.63, p < 0.01, and MDA - rho = -0.69, p < 0.01). Understanding the mechanisms by which bioactive aldehydes exert their biological effects on the skin could help define effective therapeutical strategies to counteract the cytotoxic effects of these reactive metabolic intermediates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals are physiologically produced during cellular metabolism. When their balance is disrupted in favor of ROS, a condition called oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress represents a widespread phenomenon involved in several pathological conditions. The aim of the present review was to report current knowledge on oxidative stress related to oral mucosal diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Articles from 2000 to 2018 were selected for relevance, validity and quality, from results obtained in PubMed, MEDLINE and Google Scholar using the following search terms: oxidative stress and oral lichen, oral pemphigus, aphthous stomatitis, oral leukoplakia, oral cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral carcinoma. All articles were independently screened for eligibility by the authors. RESULTS This narrative review integrates extensive information from all relevant published studies focusing on oxidative stress in oral mucosal diseases. We outline the pathogenetic function of oxidative stress in the most frequent inflammatory, potentially malignant and malignant diseases of the oral mucosa and provide detailed findings from human research. CONCLUSION Although variability in findings between individual studies exists, it justifies the conclusion that oxidative stress is a significant process in the oral mucosal diseases pathogenesis.

Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common T cell-mediated chronic inflammatory disease with malignant potential and unclear etiology. The present study suggests that antigen-specific mechanisms in which dentritic cells, T lymphocytes and NF-κB signaling pathway play critical roles, are involved in the pathogenesis of OLP. Additionally, it has been indicated that altered expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and imbalanced oxidant-antioxidant status as well as psychological issue may act as promoters to the development of OLP. Therapies for OLP are primarily aimed to control symptoms and a specific cure is not yet available. Black pepper and its principle bioactive compound piperine have been reported to possess remarkable pharmacological activities. Not only has piperine been evidenced to exhibit repressive effects on the maturation of dentritic cells, the proliferation, activation and function of T lymphocytes as well as the NF-κB signaling pathway, but also to suppress the overproduction of COX-2 and weaken the oxidative stress. Furthermore, piperine might be a possible agent for alleviating psychological disorders and preventing carcinogenesis. Given all these into consideration, piperine may be a novel and effective therapeutic strategy for OLP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lichen planus (LP) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the mucocutaneous tissue, whose exact pathological course remains unclear. Abnormal thiol/disulfide homeostasis has been postulated to be responsible for a number of diseases predominated by chronic inflammation. To be able to contribute complicated and unclear pathogenesis of LP, we aimed to investigate dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with LP, using an original automated method developed by Erel and Neselioglu in this study. METHODS The study group consisted of 81 unrelated patients with LP and 80 unrelated healthy controls with no LP lesions in their personal history or on clinical examination. Thiol/disulphide homeostasis tests have been measured with a novel automatic spectrophotometric method developed and the results have been compared statistically. RESULTS Native thiol and total thiol levels were found as significantly higher in patients with LP than the control group (P = 0.026 and 0.035, respectively). There was no significant difference between the disulfide levels of the patients with LP and the control group. CONCLUSIONS We provide evidence that that thiol/disulphide homeostasis impaired in favor of thiol levels in LP patients compared to the control group based on the data of our study. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first examination on the correlation between thiol and disulfide homeostasis in patients with LP.

Abstract
Saliva is a unique biological fluid that can be easily collected and analyzed with low cost and low morbidity. Therefore, there is a growing attention for using salivary biomarkers in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease progress and response to treatment. Salivary changes have been described in relation to oral mucosal diseases. This article discusses the causes and consequences of salivary hypofunction and presents a review of the literature related to changes in salivary parameters in various oral mucosal diseases and in systemic diseases with possible oral mucosal involvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recent studies have highlighted the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of lichen planus (LP). In the present study, the interest of the authors is focused on the investigation of ascorbic acid status in patients with LP and identification of parameters that might influence the level of this vitamin. MATERIAL AND METHOD We analyzed the level of urinary ascorbic acid (reflectometric method) in 77 patients with LP (cutaneous LP (CLP)-49 cases; oral LP (OLP)-28 cases) and 50 control subjects. The evaluation of all participants included clinical examination and laboratory and imaging tests. RESULTS Compared to the control group (19.82 mg/dl) the level of ascorbic acid was significantly lower both in patients with CLP (8.47 mg/dl, p = 0.001) and in those with OLP (8.04 mg/dl, p = 0.001). In patients with LP it was found that the deficiency of ascorbic acid increases with age (r = -0.318, p = 0.032). The urinary concentrations of ascorbic acid were significantly lower in patients with LP associated with infections compared to patients with LP without infections. CONCLUSIONS The urinary ascorbic acid level may be a useful parameter in identifying patients with LP who are at risk of developing viral or bacterial infections.

Abstract
Background Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic, inflammatory disease that affects the skin, mucous membrane, scalp and nails that frequently involves the oral mucosa. Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or repair the resulting damage. It has been suggested that oxidative stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of LP. Aim and Objectives To evaluate the role of oxidative parameters in the pathogenesis of oral LP, estimate the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and uric acid (UA) in saliva of oral LP patients and to compare the levels of SOD, MDA, GP and UA in oral LP patients with healthy controls. Methodology In this cross-sectional study, 1.5 ml of fasting saliva sample was collected using passive drool method from the study group (30 patients diagnosed as having oral LP) and the control group (30 age-matched healthy volunteers). The unstimulated saliva was collected were analyzed by spectrophotometry. Statistical analysis was done to evaluate and compare the values between groups. Results The mean values of SOD and MDA in saliva in the study group showed a significant increase in amount when compared with the control group whereas GPx showed a significant decrease in the study group. UA value showed an insignificant difference in the same comparison. Interpretation and Conclusion Oxidative stress markers as MDA and SOD are elevated, and GPx is decreased in the saliva of oral LP patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate prolidase activity and oxidative stress in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid contact reactions (OLCR) using serum and salivary samples and to compare these biomarkers with each other as well as with a group of healthy subjects in order to be able to opine their role in the estimation of OLP and OLCR. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighteen recently diagnosed patients with OLP, 32 patients with OLCR and 18 healthy controls with matched periodontal status were recruited to the study. Prolidase activity, lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA), sialic acid (SA), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) levels in both serum and saliva were determined. Additionally, salivary flow rate and its buffering capacity were estimated. Statistical analyses were performed using the chi-square test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Spearman's rho correlation coefficient. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were observed between the study groups and the control group regarding to the basic characteristics and the periodontal status (P > 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between OLP and OLCR groups regarding to the distribution of lesions' type, severity, and location (P > 0.05). No significant differences were found between the two study groups with regard to Prolidase activity, MDA, SA, and AOPPs (P ˃ 0.05), whereas statistically significant differences were found between the two study groups and the control group with regard to all evaluated parameters except of serum prolidase (P ˂ 0.01). Moderate correlation was found between salivary MDA and the OLP/OLCR lesion severity, whereas a weak correlation was observed between serum SA and the OLP/OLCR lesion severity (P ˂ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest an increased prolidase activity and oxidative stress and imbalance in the antioxidant defense system in biological fluids of patients with OLP and OLCR when compared with the healthy subjects. Both OLP and OLCR patients revealed almost similar prolidase activity and oxidative stress levels although these two conditions have different etiopathogenesis.

Abstract
Aim: This study aims to quantify the extent of DNA damage in lymphocytes of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid reactions (OLRs) using comet assay. Methodology: Lymphocytes from peripheral blood were subjected to alkaline comet assay. Comet length (CL), head diameter (HD), percentage of DNA in head, tail length (TL), percentage of DNA in tail, tail intensity, tail mean and tail moment were compared between study group (OLP and OLR) and control group using Student's t-test. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to examine the linear association between the variables. Results: Significantly higher levels of DNA damage was present in study group as reflected by CL, HD and TL, tail intensity and tail moment with P = 0.0001; percentage of DNA in head and tail with P = 0.02 and tail mean with P = 0.012. Conclusion: This study brings out the fact that DNA damage measured by comet assay was greater in the study group when compared to the control group. As a reflection of uniqueness, this study crowns the scenario with respect to early detection and prevention of potentially malignant disorders and the process of malignant transformation.

Abstract
AIM Lichen planus is a T cell-mediated chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the status of oxidative stress in saliva and the anti-oxidant defense system in relation to quality of life parameters in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP). METHODS The sample consisted of 70 patients (40 with OLP and 30 control patients). The average age of OLP patients was 60 years (9 males and 31 females), and of the control group 57 years (6 males and 24 females). All participants completed the Oral Health Impact Profile-49 quality of life questionnaire. Total anti-oxidant activity and lipid peroxidation products in saliva were evaluated, using ferric reducing anti-oxidant power and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance. RESULTS Mean levels of salivary malondialdehyde were higher in the OLP group than the control group (P = 0.001), and total anti-oxidant capacity was lower among OLP patients than control patients (P = 0.02). There was no correlation between Oral Health Impact Profile-49 findings and the oxidative stress parameters studied. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study point to the possible function of oxidative stress in the etiopathogenesis of OLP.

Abstract
The aetiology of oral premalignant lesions is unknown. Oxidative stress is associated with inflammation and cancerogenesis. The aim of our study was to compare salivary markers of oxidative and carbonyl stress in patients with oral premalignant lesions and age-matched healthy controls. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from 16 patients with oral premalignant lesions (leukoplakia, lichen planus, erythroplakia) and 16 age-matched healthy controls. Biochemical analysis included measurement of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Salivary RNA was analyzed using real time PCR. Salivary TBARS and AGEs were significantly higher in patients than in controls. No differences were found in AOPP. TAC and expression of superoxide dismutase were lower in patients than in age-matched controls. Other analyzed transcripts (vascular endothelial growth factor, sialotransferase, neuraminidase) did not differ between patients and the control group. Markers of lipoperoxidation and carbonyl stress were increased in patients with oral premalignant lesions. Decreased antioxidant status potentially due to decreased expression of antioxidant enzymes might be responsible for these findings. Our results might point to the aetiology or pathogenesis of oral premalignant lesions as well as to the mechanism of transition to oral carcinoma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, mucocutaneous, inflammatory disease. It has become more evident that the immune system plays a primary role in the development of this disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the total antioxidant status (TAS) of saliva and serum in patients with erosive OLP. METHOD AND MATERIALS This study was designed as case-control. In total, 48 patients with erosive OLP (34 women and 14 men) were enrolled as case group, and 44 self-admitted healthy people (34 women and 10 men) were selected as control group. Measurement of total antioxidant status was carried out in saliva and plasma. t-test was used for statistical analysis with significant level set at P < 0.05. RESULTS The mean ± SD of salivary TAS in case group was 0.98 ± 0.12, and in control group was 1.32 ± 0.18 mM, respectively, and there were significant differences between groups (P < 0.02). The mean ± SD of the plasma TAS in the case group and the control group was 1.24 ± 0.17 and 1.84 ± 0.34 mM, respectively. There were significant differences between two groups (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION Our results showed that salivary and plasma levels of total antioxidant status in erosive OLP patients were lower than those in healthy subjects.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that most often affects middle-aged adults. LP can involve the skin or mucous membranes including the oral, vulvovaginal, esophageal, laryngeal, and conjunctival mucosa. It has different variants based on the morphology of the lesions and the site of involvement. The literature suggests that certain presentations of the disease such as esophageal or ophthalmological involvement are underdiagnosed. The burden of the disease is higher in some variants including hypertrophic LP and erosive oral LP, which may have a more chronic pattern. LP can significantly affect the quality of life of patients as well. Drugs or contact allergens can cause lichenoid reactions as the main differential diagnosis of LP. LP is a T-cell mediated immunologic disease but the responsible antigen remains unidentified. In this paper, we review the history, epidemiology, and clinical subtypes of LP. We also review the histopathologic aspects of the disease, differential diagnoses, immunopathogenesis, and the clinical and genetic correlations.
