Abstract
OBJECTIVE Various systemic inflammation response indexes (SIRI) have repeatedly been described as prognostic factors in ovarian cancer. They have not been validated in prospective trials and published results are sometimes contradictory. We aimed to explore their role in a cohort of patients diagnosed with stage III and IV ovarian cancer treated at our institution. METHODS We retrospectively examined the prognostic influence of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), the red cell distribution width (RDW), and the mean platelet volume (MPV). RESULTS A total of 77 patients were analyzed. NLR > 2.243 at diagnosis, NLR before primary surgery, MLR at diagnosis, PLR > 289.1 at diagnosis, and PLR at diagnosis were significant in univariate Cox regression for progression-free survival, but none of them retained their significance in the multivariate Cox regression analysis. For overall survival, NLR > = 2.53 at diagnosis, MLR > = 0.245 at diagnosis, and PLR > = 198.3 at diagnosis resulted significant in univariate COX regression; only PLR > = 198.3 at diagnosis retained its significance in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION In our cohort, PLR > = 198.3 was an independent prognostic factor for worse OS. The definitive role of SIRI in ovarian cancer has not yet been established. If their value as prognostic factors could finally be established, they would become a simple and economical method to predict prognosis in patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Therefore, it is time to conduct prospective, multicenter studies with larger samples to definitively establish its role in ovarian cancer, if any.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the prognostic value of mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) and evaluate the predictive performance of a random forest model incorporating MPV and other key clinicopathological factors. METHODS A total of 204 patients with OCCC treated between January 2004 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinicopathological characteristics and preoperative laboratory data were collected, and survival outcomes were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models. An optimal MPV cutoff was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. A random forest model was then constructed using the identified independent prognostic factors, and its predictive performance was evaluated. RESULTS The ROC analysis identified 9.3 fL as the MPV cutoff value for predicting 2-year survival. The MPV-low group had lower 5-year overall survival and progression-free survival rates than the MPV-high group (p = 0.003 and p = 0.034, respectively). High MPV emerged as an independent prognostic factor (p = 0.006). The random forest model, incorporating the FIGO stage, residual tumors, peritoneal cytology, and MPV, demonstrated robust predictive performance (area under the curve: 0.905). CONCLUSION MPV is a promising prognostic indicator in OCCC. Lower MPV correlated with worse survival rates, advocating its potential utility in refining patient management strategies. The commendable predictive performance of the random forest model, integrating MPV and other significant prognostic factors, suggests a pathway toward enhanced survival prediction, thereby warranting further research.

Abstract
CONTEXT The role of platelet parameters as markers of inflammation in various diseases is now in limelight. The interaction between cancer cells and platelets is a well-established phenomenon. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant disorder with a malignant transformation rate of 2-8%. This study aimed to evaluate platelet parameters in OSMF and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in the background of OSMF. This cross-sectional study was performed using secondary data retrieved between January 2019 and December 2019 in the Department of Oral Pathology and the Hematology Laboratory. METHODS AND MATERIALS The data retrieved included 44 histopathologically proven OSCC in a background of OSMF (group III) and 36 OSMF (group II). The haematological parameters of these selected cases were retrieved from the Sysmex XN-1000 automated hematology analyser database. A control group (group I) comprises 50 subjects with normal (negative/unflagged) haematological parameters. All data were statistically analysed using SPSS 20.0. The significance level of tests was set at 5%. RESULTS The mean platelet volume (MPV) (9.60 [±0.95] P < 0.001), platelet distribution width (PDW) (10.45 [±1.9], P < 0.001), platelet large cell ratio (PLCR) (21.70 [±7.98], P < 0.001), and the ratio of mean platelet volume to total platelet count (MPV/PLT) (0.03 [0.01], P < 0.001) were lower in group III when compared to the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS Platelet parameters may be used as indices in the OSCC in the background of OSMF. However, large-scale prospective studies are necessary to evaluate the utility of these parameters during the malignant transformation of OSMF, thereby encouraging prompt treatment to prevent morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Objective Evaluate the effectiveness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), blood parameters, and tumor markers to determine the role of objective criteria in distinguishing malignant, borderline, and benign masses and to minimize unnecessary surgical interventions by reducing interpretation differences. Methods The histopathological and clinical-laboratory results of the patients who underwent surgery for the initial diagnosis and whose ovarian masses were confirmed were retrospectively reviewed. Between groups, age, cancer antigen 125, mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the presence of ascites, the ovarian-adnexal reporting and data system MRI scores, mass characteristics, and lymphocyte count were compared. Results The study comprised a total of 191 patients. These patients were categorized into three groups: Benign (n=113), borderline (n=26), and malignant (n=52). No noteworthy correlation was detected between the unilocular or multilocular nature of solid, cystic, or mixed masses and the rates of NLR, PLR, or MPV. However, a notable correlation was identified between NLR and the presence of acidity (p=0.003). In ovarian cancer patients, there was no significant difference in NLR and MPV between malignant epithelial and malignant sex cord-stromal types (p>0.05), whereas a significant difference emerged in the PLR ratio (p=0.013). Conclusion In ovarian masses with malignant potential, laboratory parameters such as NLR and PLR can guide the diagnosis process. In the future, various studies such as the development of different tests, markers, and imaging methods, the use of blood tests such as NLR, PLR, and MPV in cancer diagnosis will be possible. The results of these studies may contribute to the development of new methods for the diagnosis of ovarian cancer and the improvement of treatment protocols.

Abstract
Inflammatory proteins activate platelets, which have been observed to be directly related to cancer progression and development. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the possible association between Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and cancer (diagnostic capacity of MPV, relation to survival, the severity of the disease, and metastasis). A literature review was performed in the online database PubMed and Google Scholar for the period of 2010–2022. In total, 83 studies including 21,034 participants with 12 different types of cancer (i.e., gastric cancer, colon cancer, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, renal cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, gallbladder cancer, and multiple myeloma) were identified. The role of MPV has been extensively investigated in several types of cancer, such as gastric, colon, breast, and lung cancer, while few data exist for other types, such as renal, gallbladder cancer, and multiple myeloma. Most studies in gastric, breast, endometrium, thyroid, and lung cancer documented an elevated MPV in cancer patients. Data were less clear-cut for esophageal, ovarian, and colon cancer, while reduced MPV was observed in renal cell carcinoma and gallbladder cancer. Several studies on colon cancer (4 out of 6) and fewer on lung cancer (4 out of 10) indicated an unfavorable role of increased MPV regarding mortality. As far as other cancer types are concerned, fewer studies were conducted. MPV can be used as a potential biomarker in cancer diagnosis and could be a useful tool for the optimization of treatment strategies. Possible underlying mechanisms between cancer and MPV are discussed. However, further studies are needed to elucidate the exact role of MPV in cancer progression and metastasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nearly 66% of occurrences of gastric cancer (GC), which has the second-highest death rate of all cancers, arise in developing countries. In several cancers, the predictive significance of inflammatory markers has been established.
AIM To identify clinical characteristics and develop a specific nomogram to determine overall survival for GC patients.
METHODS Nine hundred and four GC patients treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University between January 2010 and January 2013 were recruited. Prognostic risk variables were screened for Cox analysis. The C index, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve, and decision curve analysis were used to evaluate the nomogram.
RESULTS Tumor node metastasis stage, carcinoembryonic antigen, systemic immune-inflammation index, and age were identified as independent predictive variables by multivariate analysis. Systemic immune-inflammation index value was superior to that of other inflammatory indicators. The ROC indicated the nomogram had a higher area under the curve than other factors, and its C-index for assessing the validation and training groups of GC patients was extremely reliable.
CONCLUSION We created a novel nomogram to forecast the prognosis of GC patients following curative gastrectomy based on blood markers and other characteristics. Both surgeons and patients can benefit significantly from this new scoring system.

Abstract
Introduction: Gastric cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed tumor and is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality, worldwide. Due to the low rate of early diagnosis, approximately two-thirds of patients are first diagnosed at an advanced stage. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is recommended for patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a combined inflammatory and immunogenic factor, has been universally used for predicting outcomes in AGC patients. Given that NLR is a dynamic process, in this study, we investigated the value of NLR change for the prediction of chemotherapeutic responses and prognosis in patients with AGC. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 111 patients with AGC who underwent NAC following curative surgery. Patients were divided into two groups according to the NLR change after chemotherapy into the increased and decreased groups. Outcome measures were overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Univariate was calculated by Kaplan-Meier method. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results: Post-chemotherapy, NLR increased in 36 patients and decreased in 75 patients. After a median follow-up time of 19 months, six patients developed local recurrence, 23 developed distant recurrence, and 34 died. Patients with reduced post-chemotherapy NLR showed significantly longer OS (p < 0.001) and DFS (p < 0.001). A decrease in the NLR after NAC was an independent indicator associated with better OS (p < 0.001) and DFS (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In patients with AGC, a decrease in NLR after NAC indicated better survival. NLR change could serve as a robust indicator for the efficiency of NAC and prognostic prediction in patients with AGC.

Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an inflammatory marker indicative of platelet activation. There are several studies that suggest an association between the neoplastic process and cancer metastasis. We performed a retrospective analysis to investigate the role of MPV as a prognostic informative marker in gallbladder cancer. This study included 73 patients who underwent treatment for gallbladder cancer with curative or palliative intent. MPV was obtained and statistically analysed to investigate the association between the nodal status (N), the overall stage as per the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system, perineural invasion, and differentiation of the tumor. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS Statistics, version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). We found that the MPV values were significantly high in node-positive cases (OR = 3.623, 95% CI = 7.778-1.687, p value = -0.0001), cases in the advanced stage (OR = 3.623, 95% CI = 7.778-1.687, p value = 0.0001), cases with perineural invasion (OR = 3.396, 95% CI = 8.319-1.387, p value = -0.0001), and poor differentiation (OR = 2.327, 95% CI = 4.651-1.164, p value = -0.002 ). MPV is an inexpensive and convenient inflammatory marker that correlates with nodal positivity in the staging and prognostication of gallbladder cancer. This marker can be used to ascertain the risk status of gallbladder cancer.

Abstract
Simple Summary This study describes the expression of synaptophysin on platelet surfaces of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs). Compared to healthy donors, platelet-expressed synaptophysin was shown to be significantly upregulated in NENs patients. Platelet-expressed synaptophysin was significantly correlated with tumor proliferation and metastasis, demonstrating the involvement of platelets in tumor biology. Expression of synaptophysin on platelet surfaces was finally shown to predict progression-free survival in NEN. This study conceptually explored platelet-expressed synaptophysin as a novel biomarker in NEN. Abstract Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) encompass a heterogeneous group of tumors. Whereas low-grade neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are histologically well-differentiated, highly aggressive neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are characterized by a high proliferation rate and a worse clinical outcome. Since most NEN patients need monitoring of tumor progress and response to treatment for a long period of time, especially in metastatic disease, reliable, dynamic, and easy-to-assess biomarkers are needed. In this prospective study, we identified platelet-expressed synaptophysin (pSyn) as a novel biomarker in NENs. The level of pSyn in NENs was significantly upregulated compared to healthy donors. pSyn was positively correlated with higher tumor stages, the occurrence of metastasis, histological grading, and higher tumor proliferation (Ki67). Most importantly, high pSyn expression in our NEN cohort was shown to predict shorter progression-free survival (PFS). In conclusion, our data highlight the potential of pSyn as a novel biomarker in NENs reflecting tumor stages, grading, and prognosis.

Abstract
Owing to their key role in several diseases including cancer, activating and inhibitory immune checkpoint molecules are increasingly exploited as targets for immunotherapy. Recently, we demonstrated that platelets, which largely influence tumor progression and immune evasion, functionally express the ligand of the checkpoint molecule GITR. This immunoreceptor modulates effector functions of T cells and NK cells with its function varying dependent on cellular context and activation state. Here, we provide a comparative analysis of platelet-derived GITRL (pGITRL) in breast cancer patients and healthy volunteers. The levels of pGITRL were found to be higher on platelets derived from cancer patients and appeared to be specifically regulated during tumor progression as exemplified by several clinical parameters including tumor stage/grade, the occurrence of metastases and tumor proliferation (Ki67) index. In addition, we report that pGITRL is upregulated during platelet maturation and particularly induced upon exposure to tumor-derived soluble factors. Our data indicate that platelets modulate the GITR/GITRL immune checkpoint in the context of malignant disease and provide a rationale to further study the GITR/GITRL axis for exploitation for immunotherapeutic intervention in cancer patients.

Abstract
Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) increased the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common neoplastic disease originating from the pancreas. Increasing evidence indicates that platelets activation plays a prominent role in tumor and T2DM. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of activated platelets and is altered in several cancers. The current study aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of MPV in resectable PDAC patients with T2DM. Methods Eight hundred and three patients with PDAC were included in this retrospective study. We determined the optimal cutoff value of MPV for 5-year overall survival (OS) using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method. The associations between MPV levels and clinical characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox’s proportional hazard regression model were used to evaluate the prognostic value of MPV for OS. Results Compared to the PDAC patients without T2DM, MPV levels were significantly higher in the PDAC patients with T2DM. Moreover, MPV was significantly associated with the differentiation between T2DM and non-T2DM. In addition, Kaplan-Meier analysis found that patients with low MPV levels had a poorer 5-year OS than patients with high MPV levels in diabetic patients. Multivariate analyses revealed that MPV was an independent prognostic factor for OS in patients with T2DM. However, the independent prognostic role of MPV was not observed in patients without T2DM. Conclusion MPV independently predicts poor survival in PDAC patients with T2DM. Prospective studies are required to confirm the role of MPV in PDAC.

Abstract
Aims Liver metastases occur in approximately 25% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and cause more than 90% of deaths in CRC. Platelets play a crucial role in cancer progression and metastases. We aimed to investigate the relationship between platelet indices and CRC with synchronous liver metastases. Methods We conducted a retrospective clinical study including 206 CRC patients without metastases and 200 CRC patients with synchronous liver metastases from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2017. Data of the patients' clinicopathological characteristics were collected. Results Platelet distribution width (PDW) was decreased in CRC patients with liver metastases compared with CRC patients without liver metastases. In addition, the prevalence of liver metastases reduced as PDW quartiles increased. After adjusting for other risk factors, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for CRC liver metastases according to PDW quartiles were 1.000, 0.289 (0.156-0.535), 0.482 (0.271-0.860), and 0.190 (0.101-0.358). Conclusions Compared with CRC patients without metastases, PDW is reduced in CRC patients with liver metastases. Moreover, PDW was independently associated with the presence of CRC liver metastases.

Abstract
Background Platelets play a crucial role in breast cancer (BC) progression and metastases. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of platelet activation. The aim of the present study was to assess whether there is a difference in MPV between patients with metastatic BC with liver metastases and those with BC without liver metastases. Methods Between January 2014 and December 2017, 211 metastatic BC patients with synchronous liver metastases and 215 BC patients without metastases were retrospectively analyzed. Patients’ clinicopathological characteristics data were collected. Results MPV levels were reduced in patients with liver metastases compared with those in patients without liver metastases. There were significant differences in MPV levels according to liver metastases status both in premenopausal and in postmenopausal non-TNBC or non-HER2+ patients. Moreover, in postmenopausal HER2+ or TNBC patients, MPV levels were lower in patients with liver metastases compared with those in patients without liver metastases. In the group with non-liver metastasis, platelet distribution width was significantly associated with tumor N stage. In addition, the prevalence of BC liver metastases decreased as MPV quartiles increased. After adjusting for other risk factors, the odds ratios for liver metastases according to MPV quartiles were 1.000, 0.267 (0.134–0.530), 0.072 (0.034–0.152), and 0.137 (0.066–0.281), respectively. Conclusion MPV is reduced in BC patients with liver metastases compared with that in BC patients without metastases. Moreover, MPV is independently associated with the presence of liver metastases.

Abstract
Purpose Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) have been used to reflect the platelet activity in clinics. We assessed initial serum MPV and PDW levels in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, in predicting the development of sepsis in CRC patients postoperatively. Patients and Methods This study included 220 patients diagnosed with CRC. 55 patients were stratified to one group that developed sepsis postoperatively, and 165 patients were stratified to the other group that did not develop sepsis postoperatively. Clinical and laboratory characteristics were collected 3 days before the operation. Results MPV (p < 0.001) was significantly higher and PDW (p < 0.001) was significantly lower in the sepsis group than in the nonsepsis group. Either MPV or PDW is independently associated with ICU mortality in sepsis patients with CRC. MPV is independently associated with 14-day, 28-day, and 90-day mortality and PDW is independently associated with 90-day mortality in patients with CRC. The prevalence of sepsis increased as MPV tertiles increased (p < 0.001), and the prevalence of sepsis increased as PDW tertiles decreased (p < 0.001). Conclusions Serum MPV and PDW levels between CRC patients with/without sepsis postoperatively are significantly different. The initial serum MPV or PDW levels can potentially serve as a predictor of sepsis in CRC patients postoperatively.

Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality in women, which seriously threatens the health of women worldwide. Platelet (PLT)-related parameters, including PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet distribution width (PDW), are correlated with tumor prognosis. Methods: In total, 110 patients with cervical carcinoma were recruited in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the receiver operating characteristic analysis cutoff values of PLT, MPV, PCT, or PDW. The post-/preradiotherapy ratios were defined as the rate of preradiotherapy PLT-related parameters counts and the corresponding ones obtained after radiotherapy. Results: Higher pretreatment PLT level was correlated with Higher Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage (II). Higher pretreatment PLT level was correlated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Increased post-/preradiotherapy ratio of PLT was correlated with worse PFS and OS. Changes in PCT, MPV, or PDW levels had no effects on PFS or OS. Cox regression analysis model indicated that larger tumor size, higher pretreatment PLT level, and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio were independently associated with worse PFS; higher FIGO stage (II) and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio were independently associated with worse OS. Conclusion: Pretreatment PLT level and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio are correlated with outcomes of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Physicians and surgeons pay much attention to evaluating thyroid nodules due to the malignant potential of these growths. Inflammation has a crucial role in the development of cancer. Increase in the mean platelet volume (MPV) has been described in various inflammatory conditions. Since some of thyroid nodules are malignant, we aimed to compare MPV values between patients with malignant and benign thyroid nodules after precise pathologic diagnosis. We retrospectively analyzed hemograms of patients having undergone thyroid surgery for thyroid nodule between January 2013 and January 2015, and compared them to those recorded in healthy subjects. MPV was higher in the malignant thyroid nodule group than in the benign nodule group (9.1±1 fL vs. 7.8±0.8 fL). The difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Increased MPV should be considered as an assistive diagnostic tool in differentiating malignant and benign thyroid nodules. However, further prospective studies are required to confirm its usefulness in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelets play a crucial role in cancer progression and metastasis. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between platelet indices and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with brain metastases. METHODS Between January 2015 and December 2017, 232 NSCLC patients with brain metastases and 244 NSCLC patients without metastases were retrospectively analyzed. Patients' clinicopathological characteristics data were collected. RESULTS Platelet count was increased and mean platelet volume (MPV) was reduced in NSCLC patients with brain metastases compared with NSCLC patients without metastases. In addition, the prevalence of NSCLC decreased as MPV quartiles increased. After adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95% CIs) for NSCLC brain metastases according to MPV quartiles were 1.757 (1.024-3.015), 2.097 (1.209-3.635), 1.517 (0.874-2.635), and 1.000, respectively. CONCLUSIONS MPV is reduced in NSCLC patients with brain metastases compared with NSCLC patients without metastases. Moreover, MPV is found to be independently associated with the presence of NSCLC brain metastases.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an increased risk of breast cancer (BC). Furthermore, growing evidence suggests that activated platelets play a crucial role in tumor and T2DM. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a platelet index and is altered in patients with malignancies. The aim of this study was to determine whether preoperative MPV could predict survival in BC patients with T2DM. METHODS The clinical data of 266 female BC patients with T2DM and 264 female BC patients without T2DM between January 2011 and December 2011 in our center were retrospectively analyzed. Survival analysis was performed using the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS The patients with T2DM had higher MPV levels than the patients without T2DM. Furthermore, MPV was found to be significantly associated with differentiation T2DM from non-T2DM. In addition, survival analysis revealed that the disease-specific survival and overall survival of patients with MPV ≤ 8.0 fL were significantly shorter than that of those with MPV > 8.0 fL in diabetic patients. Multivariate analysis identified MPV as an independent poor prognostic factor for survival only in patients with T2DM not in patients without T2DM. CONCLUSIONS Our study first established a connection between MPV and BC patients with T2DM, suggesting that MPV was an independent prognostic factor and could be the biomarker for prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) having pre-existing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have a poorer prognosis than those without T2DM. Moreover, accumulating evidence reveals that activated platelets play a crucial role in tumor and T2DM. The mean platelet volume (MPV) indicates platelet activation and is altered in malignancies. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of MPV in patients with HCC having T2DM. METHODS This retrospective study performed between January 2010 and December 2013 included 331 patients with HCC (165 with T2DM and 166 without T2DM). The overall survival was compared, and the predictors of overall survival were analyzed. RESULTS The patients with T2DM had lower MPV levels than those without T2DM. Furthermore, the MPV levels significantly differentiated T2DM from non-T2DM. In addition, for patients with T2DM, the overall survival was significantly shorter in patients with low MPV levels than in those with high MPV levels. Multivariate analysis identified decreased MPV as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival only in patients with T2DM, but not in those without T2DM. CONCLUSION Reduced MPV was a prognostic factor for poor outcome in patients with HCC and T2DM.

Abstract
PURPOSE The role of mean platelet volume (MPV) as a predictor of outcomes in various cancer entities including colorectal cancer (CRC) has already been analyzed. However, data on the prognostic and predictive value of MPV in CRC over multiple lines of systemic therapy are missing. METHODS In this retrospective single-center cohort study, 690 patients with UICC stage II, III or IV CRC receiving adjuvant and/or palliative chemotherapy were included. Primary endpoints in the adjuvant, palliative and best supportive care (BSC) setting were 3-year recurrence-free survival (RFS), 6-months progression-free survival (PFS), and 6-months overall survival (OS), respectively. Kaplan-Meier estimators, log-rank tests, and uni- and multivariable Cox models were used to analyze RFS, PFS and OS. A cut-off defining patients with low MPV was chosen empirically at the 25th percentile of the MPV distribution in the respective treatment setting. RESULTS Three-year RFS was 76%. Median 6-month PFS estimates in 1st, 2nd and 3rd line therapy were 59, 37 and 27%, respectively. Median 6-month OS in BSC was 31%. Small platelets as indicated by low MPV did not predict for shorter RFS. In the first 3 palliative treatment lines a consistent association between low MPV and decreased 6-month PFS was not observed. In the BSC setting, patients with low MPV had numerically but not significantly shorter OS. Higher MPV levels did not consistently predict for ORR or DCR across the first 3 palliative treatment lines. CONCLUSION Small platelets are not predicting CRC outcomes, and thus are hardly useful for influencing clinical decision making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laryngeal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the head and neck. Activated platelets play a critical role in cancer development and progression. Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) have been found in various types of cancer. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the association of platelet indices with laryngeal cancer. STUDY DESIGN The study included 216 patients with laryngeal cancer, 189 subjects with benign laryngeal disease, and 213 control subjects between January 2015 and December 2015. All participants' clinical and laboratory characteristics at initial diagnosis were collected. RESULT MPV was significantly lower and PDW was markedly higher in laryngeal cancer patients compared with control subjects and patients with benign laryngeal disease. A significant correlation between MPV and lymph node metastasis was found. The prevalence of laryngeal cancer increased as MPV quartiles decreased and PDW quartiles increased. Furthermore, MPV and PDW were independent risk factors for distinguishing laryngeal cancer from benign laryngeal disease. CONCLUSIONS The patients with laryngeal cancer have reduced MPV and increased PDW compared to the subjects without laryngeal cancer. In addition, MPV and PDW play different roles in laryngeal cancer from benign laryngeal disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Squamous cell cervical carcinoma is the most common gynecological malignant disorder worldwide. Early detection of squamous cell cervical carcinoma is needed for proper clinical management. Squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) is commonly used as a tumor marker for squamous cell cervical carcinoma. Platelet distribution width (PDW) is an indicator of platelet activation. Prealbumin is a negative acute-phase protein. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of SCCA, PDW, and prealbumin individually or in combination, to distinguish between cervical carcinoma and control subjects. MEHTODS Two hundred and twenty patients with squamous cell cervical carcinoma and 211 control subjects were included in the study. Patients' characteristics and hematologic tests data at initial diagnosis were collected. RESULTS Our results showed that SCCA and PDW were higher, and prealbumin was lower in cervical carcinoma patients than in control subjects. Single biomarker had AUC value ranging from 0.753 for SCCA to 0.845 for PDW. The combination of SCCA and PDW increased the AUC to 0.900 (p< 0.0001). In addition, the combination of SCCA, PDW and prealbumin exhibited a significantly larger AUC of 0.917 (0.887-0.942), significantly higher than those of any single marker. CONCLUSIONS The combined use of SCCA, PDW and prealbumin can accurately distinguish squamous cell cervical carcinoma from control subjects. This promising approach could be helpful in early detection of squamous cell cervical carcinoma.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic role of preoperative hematological parameters, especially neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) in germ cell testicular malignancies and their prediagnostic role in staging of testicular cancer. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional retrospective study, we analyzed 39 patients who underwent radical orchiectomy due to a testicular cancer (Group 1) and 82 patients on whom varicocelectomy procedure was performed as control group (Group 2) between January 2006 and January 2016 in our clinic. Evaluation of the preoperative hematological parameters in both groups and also the subgroups in malignancy group according to histopathological stages was conducted in this study. Results When the hematological parameters were compared, a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of neutrophil counts, NLR, PLR, and MPV. NLR and PLR were significantly higher and MPV was significantly lower in testicular cancer group compared to the control group. NLR was 3.1 ± 1.4 and 2.0 ± 1.5, PLR was 141.3 ± 53.2 and 115.7 ± 44.8, and MPV was 8.9 ± 1.0 and 9.3 ± 1.1 for testicular cancer and control groups, respectively (P < 0.05). Furthermore, differences were observed between only mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and MPV (P < 0.05) in different stages of malignancy. Conclusion In accordance with these findings, NLR, PLR, and MPV may be helpful for prediagnosis of testicular malignancies. Hematological parameters will become important in the preoperative assessment for those patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUD Inflammation can promote tumor growth, invasion, angiogenesis and even metastasis. Inflammatory markers have prognostic value in some malignancies. The aim of the present study was to examine whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) served as sensitive serum markers for predicting lymph node metastasis and prognostic factors in gastric cancer (GC) patients. METHODS 904 consecutive patients who underwent radical total or subtotal gastrectomy between 2010 and 2011, were included in this study. The clinical utility of the NLR and PLR was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves,Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were used to calculate the overall survival (OS) characteristics. RESULTS We determined the cutoff values of NLR and PLR was 2.0 and 160 respectively according to the ROC curve. Both the NLR and PLR were significantly associated with LN (lymph node) metastasis, and high NLR and PLR groups were significantly associated with poor overall survival. Additionally, NLR and TNM stage were independent prognostic factors for overall survival, however, PLR had limited value. CONCLUSIONS NLR and PLR levels may be valuable indexes for lymph node metastasis. Although both the PLR and NLR may have prognostic value of gastric cancer patients, NLR is better to predict overall survival than PLR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Activated platelets promote cancer progression and metastasis. However, the prognostic value of platelet indices in laryngeal cancer remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive significance of platelet indices in laryngeal cancer. RESULTS Of the 241 patients, high platelet distribution width (PDW) levels were observed in 116 (48.1 %) patients. In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, increased PDW was significantly associated with a poorer overall survival (p < 0.001). In the multivariate Cox model, PDW was an independent prognostic index for overall survival (HR=4.381, 95% CI=2.313-8.298, P < 0.001). METHOD The retrospective study included 241 consecutive patients with laryngeal cancer between January 2009 and December 2009. The relationships between PDW and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of PDW. CONCLUSIONS Elevated PDW might be a novel prognostic marker in laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
Most pancreatic cancer (PC) patients manifest multiple liver metastases at the time of diagnosis. Activated platelets play a key role in tumor growth and tumor metastases. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a platelet index and is altered in patients with malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate whether MPV can effectively predict death in PC patients with synchronous liver metastases. The clinical data of 411 PC patients with synchronous liver metastases between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. Subjects were divided into two groups by MPV levels. Clinicopathological data were collected retrospectively and relationships between MPV levels and clinical parameters were evaluated. Survival analysis was performed. Increased MPV was not significantly correlated with tumor location, tumor size, and CA19.9. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the overall survival of patients with MPV > 8.7 fL was significantly shorter than that of those with MPV ≤ 8.7 fL (log-rank p < 0.001). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model identified MPV as an independent poor prognostic factor for overall survival. In conclusion, elevated MPV is associated with worse survival outcome in PC patients with synchronous liver metastases. Further studies are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complete blood count parameters have been introduced to be diagnostic biomarkers for many cancer-related diseases associated with inflammatory process. The aim of our study was to detect whether there is any relationship between benign or malignant endometrial pathologies and complete blood count parameters. METHODS Four hundred and sixteen patients with a complaint of abnormal uterine bleeding who admitted to Zeynep Kamil Women and Children's Health Training and Research hospital between 2013 and 2016 and undergoing endometrial biopsy were included in the study. The patients were evaluated in three groups as follows: endometrial carcinoma (n: 97), endometrial hyperplasia (n: 135), and healthy control (n: 184) groups. All patients had a complete blood count on the day of biopsy or within the week of the biopsy, and the presence of a relationship between complete blood count parameters and benign or malignant endometrial disease was investigated. RESULTS Mean corpuscular volume measurements were found to be significantly higher in endometrial carcinoma (P = .018) and endometrial hyperplasia (P = .001) groups compared to the control group. While red cell distribution width measurements were found to be significantly lower in patients with endometrial carcinoma group compared to other groups (P < .01); the area under curve obtained for MPV is 58.7% to determine endometrial carcinoma. CONCLUSION Mean corpuscular volume and red cell distribution width are bio-markers that we can use as the predictive marker in patients with endometrial carcinoma and which are cheap, repeatable, and readily obtainable from complete blood count panels and promising.

Abstract
Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) represents the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy and the sixth leading cause for cancer related death among men worldwide. Although use of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) as a diagnostic marker has improved the detection and management of PCa, low specificity and sensitivity has limited its clinical efficacy. Moreover, elevated PSA is frequently observed in benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are commonly used indicators of platelet activation. The purpose of current study was to investigate the ability of PSA, MPV, and PDW individually or in combination, to differentiate PCa from BPH. Materials and Methods: This study included 100 patients with PCa and 108 patients with BPH. We collected all participants’ clinical and laboratory characteristics. The benefit of adding MPV and PDW to a model with only PSA was evaluated as an increased in the area under the curve (AUC) obtained by receiver operating curve (ROC). Results: PCa patients had reduced MPV and elevated PSA and PDW levels compared to BPH patients. Single biomarkers had AUC values ranging from 0.683 for PDW to 0.865 for PSA. Moreover, the combination of PSA, MPV, and PDW increased the AUC to 0.935 (0.892-0.964) (p<0.0001), significantly higher than those of any single marker. Conclusions: The combined use of PSA, MPV, and PDW may be clinically useful in distinguishing between PCa and BPH.

Abstract
In this review, we discuss the interaction between cancer and markers of inflammation (such as levels of inflammatory cells and proteins) in the circulation, and the potential benefits of routinely monitoring these markers in peripheral blood measurement assays. Next, we discuss the prognostic value and limitations of using inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios and C-reactive protein measurements. Furthermore, the review discusses the benefits of combining multiple types of measurements and longitudinal tracking to improve staging and prognosis prediction of patients with cancer, and the ability of novel in silico frameworks to leverage this high-dimensional data.

Abstract
Gallbladder cancer (GBC) represents the most common biliary tract malignancy. Activated platelets play an essential
role in cancer development and progression. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are
commonly used indexes of activated platelets in clinical practice. The aim of the current study was to investigate the
association of MPV and PDW with GBC. 104 GBC patients and 109 normal control subjects were entered in this
study between January 2015 and December 2015. We collected all participants’ clinical and laboratory characteristics
at initial diagnosis. The odds ratios (ORs) for GBC were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis after
adjusting for confounding variables across MPV and PDW quartiles. MPV levels were markedly lower and PDW levels
were remarkably higher in GBC patients than control subjects. A significant correlation between PDW and lymph node
metastasis was detected. In addition, after adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95% CIs) for GBC in each MPV
quartile were 5.117 (1.939-13.506), 2.444 (0.917-6.516), 3.718 (1.381-10.007), and 1.000, respectively. The ORs (95%
CIs) for GBC in each PDW quartile were 1.000, 2.063 (0.825-5.162), 3.070 (1.108-8.507), and 12.108 (4.243-34.553),
respectively. In conclusion, decreased MPV and elevated PDW were independently associated with GBC. Our findings
suggest that MPV and PDW are available parameters for early detection of GBC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are very few biomarkers available to diagnose cases with premature ovarian failure. Some complete blood count parameters have been introduced to be diagnostic biomarkers for several disorders associated with inflammatory process. Due to the evidence that indicated chronic inflammatory process to be underlying pathophysiology in premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), we aimed to assess the predictive value of complete blood count parameters for POI diagnosis. METHOD A total of 96 women diagnosed to have premature ovarian failure were compared with 110 otherwise healthy women in terms of some basal hormone levels and complete blood count parameters. RESULTS Mean age was similar between groups. Neutrophil/lymphocyte and mean platelet volume/lymphocyte ratios were significantly higher in group with POI (P < .001, P < .003, respectively). In group with POI, there were significant correlations between anti-Mullerian hormone and follicle stimulating hormone (r = -.30, P <.05), anti-Mullerian hormone and white blood cell count (r = .23, P < .05). Mean platelet volume/lymphocyte ratio significantly predicted cases with POI (AUC = 0.607, %95 CI: 0.529-0.684; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Neutrophil/lymphocyte and mean platelet volume/lymphocyte ratios are elevated in POI. There have been some controversies about the value of neutrophil/lymphocyte in POI diagnosis. We suggest mean platelet volume/lymphocyte ratio as a new biomarker in early POI because it is cheap and easily accessible compared to anti-Mullerian hormone.

Abstract
Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) is implicated in several malignancies. However, the clinicopathological significance and prognostic value of MPV in colorectal cancer (CRC) is still elusive. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the predictive significance of MPV in CRC. The retrospective study recruited 509 consecutive CRC patients between January 2009 and December 2009. The relationships between MPV and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of MPV. Of the 509 CRC patients, high MPV levels were detected in 150 (29.5%) patients. Elevated MPV was associated with tumor differentiation (p < 0.001). Patients with increased MPV had poor overall survival compared with those with normal level (60.0% vs. 83.6%, log-rank test, p = 0.035). Cox regression analysis showed that MPV was an independent prognostic factor in CRC (HR = 1.452, 95% CI = 1.118-1.884, p = 0.005). In conclusion, MPV is easily available in routine blood test. Elevated MPV might act as a marker of prognosis and therapeutic target for CRC.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer is the most rapidly increasing cancer type among women and the second among men. Early detection
greatly improves the prognosis. For this purpose, the platelet distribution width (PDW), an early indicator of platelet
activation, might be useful. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of PDW and serum albumin levels
individually or in combination to distinguish between thyroid cancer and benign thyroid nodules. A total of 265 patients
with thyroid cancer and 243 with benign thyroid nodules were included in a development set. Then, two groups of
130 cases were enrolled in a validation set. Patient characteristics and hematologic test data at initial diagnosis were
collected. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), area under the curve (AUC) values, sensitivity and specificity
were estimated. Albumin levels are significantly lower and PDW significantly higher in patients with thyroid cancer
compared to the benign cases. Moreover, PDW values prominently differed among three types of thyroid cancer. In
addition, the combination of PDW and albumin exhibited a significantly larger AUC than either marker alone (p < 0.001).
In conclusion, the combined use of PDW and albumin might be useful in distinguishing thyroid cancer from benign
thyroid nodules. This promising approach could be helpful in early detection of thyroid cancer.

The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of MPV value as a prognostic indicator of RCC. The retrospective study recruited 306 consecutive RCC patients between January 2009 and December 2009. The relationships between MPV and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of MPV. Of the 306 RCC patients, low MPV levels were detected in 61 (19.9%) patients. Reduced MPV was associated with histology types, T classification, UCLA Integrated Scoring System (UISS) category, and Mayo clinic stage, size, grade, and necrosis score (SSIGN) category (P < 0.05). Patients with decreased MPV had significantly shorter survival time than patients with normal MPV (P < 0.001). Cox regression analysis revealed that reduced MPV was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (hazard ratio, 1.758; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.083–2.855, P = 0.023). Moreover, the prognostic accuracy of TNM stage, UISS, and SSIGN prognostic models were improved when MPV was added. In conclusion, reduced MPV is identified as an independent predictor of adverse clinical outcome in RCC.

Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer is the most common gynecological malignant disorder worldwide. Activated platelets play a key role in cancer development and progression. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an early indicator of platelet activation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate MPV levels in patients with cervical cancer. Materials and methods: A total of 181 patients with cervical cancer and 181 controls between January 2015 and June 2015 were included in the study. Patient characteristics and hematologic test data at initial diagnosis were collected and odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of cervical cancer were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analyses across MPV quartiles. Results: MPV levels were decreased in patients with cervical cancer compared with control subjects. A significant correlation between MPV and FIGO stage was found. Moreover, after adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95%CIs) for cervical cancer according to MPV quartiles were 4.450 (1.975-10.026), 2.505 (1.206-5.202), 0.573 (0.261-1.259), and 1.000, respectively. Conclusions: MPV was found to be independently associated with the presence of cervical cancer. Our results suggest that MPV could be potential diagnostic screening tool.

Abstract
Background Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) is implicated in a wide range of cancers. However, the prognostic role of MPV in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the predictive significance of MPV in MIBC. Method The retrospective study included 218 consecutive MIBC patients between January 2009 and December 2009. The relationships between MPV and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of MPV. Result Of the 218 patients, low MPV levels were detected in 141 (64.7 %) patients. Reduced MPV was associated with T stage and histology grade (p < 0.05). In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, decreased MPV was significantly associated with a poorer overall survival (p = 0.007). In the multivariate Cox model, decreased MPV was an independent prognostic index for overall survival (HR=2.023, 95% CI=1.050-3.897, p = 0.025). Conclusion MPV is easily available in routine blood test. Our results demonstrated that reduced MPV could be regarded as a potential prognosis indicator for clinical outcome in MIBC.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among females. However, mammographic diagnosis is sometimes non-conclusive with a Breast imaging Reporting and Data System (Bi-RaDS) result of 0. Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) is the most widely used serum tumor marker for breast cancer screening. Platelet distribution width (PDW) is an early indicator of platelet activation. Fibrinogen contributed to angiogenesis and distant metastasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of CA15-3, PDW, and fibrinogen individually or in combination, to distinguish breast cancer from benign breast disease. 200 consecutive patients with breast cancer and 187 patients with benign breast disease were included in this retrospective study. Patients’ characteristics and hematologic tests data at initial diagnosis were collected. The benefit of adding PDW and fibrinogen to a model with only CA15-3 was evaluated as an increased in the area under the curve (AUC) obtained by receiver operating curve (ROC). CA15-3, PDW and fibrinogen are higher in breast cancer patients than in patients with benign breast disease. Single biomarkers had AUC values ranging from 0.687 for fibrinogen to 0.810 for CA15-3. In addition, the combination of PDW, CA15-3, and fibrinogen increased the AUC to 0.900 (0.866-0.928) (p<0.0001), significantly higher than those of any single marker. In conclusion, the combined use of CA15-3, PDW and fibrinogen may be clinically useful in discriminating between breast cancer and benign breast disease in non-conclusive mammography patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the third most common genitourinary cancer. Activated platelets play a pivotal role in cancer development and progression. Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) has been reported in several malignancies. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of MPV with RCC. STUDY DESIGN The study consisted of 145 patients with RCC, 110 patients with benign renal tumor and 132 healthy control subjects between January 2015 and December 2015. All participants' clinical and laboratory characteristics at initial diagnosis were collected. The odds ratios (ORs) for RCC were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for confounding variables across MPV quartiles. RESULTS The patients with RCC had decreased pre-operative MPV compared to the patients with benign renal tumor and healthy control subjects. Furthermore, pre-operative MPV was reduced in benign renal tumor compared with healthy control subjects. Surgical tumor resection resulted in a significant increase in MPV levels (8.7 fL vs. 9.0 fL; p = 0.011). After adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95% CIs) for RCC in each MPV quartile were 25.725 (7.556-87.585), 7.447 (2.701-20.537), 0.703 (0.245-2.019), and 1.000, respectively. CONCLUSIONS RCC patients have remarkably reduced MPV compared to patients with benign renal tumor and healthy control subjects. Moreover, decreased MPV was independently associated with RCC. Our results suggest that detection of MPV may be useful to assess the risk of RCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a predictive clinical biomarker for different cancers. However, the results of several studies investigating the association between the PLR and the prognosis of ovarian cancer have been inconclusive. Therefore, there is a need to conduct a meta-analysis to estimate the prognostic value of the PLR in ovarian cancer. METHODS We searched the EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, and Web of Science databases to identify clinical studies that had evaluated the association between the PLR and ovarian cancer prognosis. Outcomes evaluated included overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). We also analyzed PLR differences between malignant ovarian masses and the controls. RESULTS Twelve relevant studies that comprised 2340 patients were selected for the meta-analysis. The results revealed that elevated PLR was significantly associated with poor OS (hazard ratio (HR) 1.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-2.56, p < 0.01) and PFS (HR 1.61, 95% CI 1.03-2.51, p < 0.01). The PLRs in malignant cases were higher than in controls (mean difference = 63.57, 95% CI 39.47-87.66, p < 0.00001). CONCLUSION An elevated PLR is associated with poor prognosis in patients with ovarian cancer. The PLR could be employed as a prognostic marker in patients with ovarian cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte (NLR) ratios have been extensively investigated in cancer. However, to date, actual guidelines concerning ovarian cancer are missing. The purpose of the present systematic review is to summarize the available evidence. METHODS We systematically searched Medline (1966-2016), Scopus (2004-2016), ClinicalTrials.gov (2008-2016), and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials CENTRAL (1999-2016) databases together with reference lists from included studies. RESULTS Eighteen studies were included in the present systematic review that involved 3453 patients. According to the current data, both PLR and NLR values in ovarian cancer patients seem to deviate from healthy controls. Furthermore, they may also be indicative of the stage of the disease and of the response to chemotherapy. Nevertheless, their diagnostic accuracy remains limited as their sensitivity and specificity are moderate (detects 55-80% of ovarian cancer women). CONCLUSION According to the findings of our study, both PLR and NLR seem to be promising screening and prognostic factors of epithelial ovarian cancer. The actual diagnostic cut-off values remain, however, undefined until now. Despite their limited sensitivity and specificity, they might be useful in the future as adjunct biomarkers for the detection and surveillance of the disease.

Abstract
Activated platelets are involved in cancer development and progression. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are early indexes of platelet activation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the ability of MPV, PDW and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) individually or in combination, to distinguish between gastric cancer and gastric ulcer. The study involved 194 patients with gastric cancer, 191 patients with gastric ulcer, and 185 control subjects. Subjects’ characteristics and hematologic tests data at initial diagnosis were collected. We found that MPV levels are significantly increased and PDW levels are significantly reduced in patients with gastric ulcer and in control subjects compared with those in gastric cancer. When the area under the curve (AUC) was used to analyze control subjects versus gastric cancer, the combination of PDW and CEA exhibited a significantly larger AUC of 0.939 (0.910-0.961) compared with the combination of MPV and CEA (p = 0.0045). When AUC was used to analyze gastric ulcer versus gastric cancer, PDW alone had the high specificity (98.5%) and high sensitivity (97.4%). In conclusion, combined use of MPV, PDW and CEA can accurately distinguish gastric cancer from gastric ulcer and controls. Further studies in larger samples are warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this study, they investigated whether mean thrombocyte volume (MPV) and MPV/platelet count ratio have a prognostic significance in advanced NSCLC or not. METHODS A total of 496 NSCLC patients at stage IIIB/IV and did not meet exclusion criteria were included in the study. The demographic features (age, gender, smoking habit), clinical characteristics (performance status, weight loss, disease stage, first-line treatment regimen), laboratory tests (levels of hemoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase and calcium as well as MPV, MPV/platelet count ratio and counts of white blood cell, platelet), and histological features (histologic type, tumor grade) were recorded. RESULTS The MPV levels of all patients were determined as 10.2 {plus minus} 3.4 (range, 6.4-14.1 fL). With ROC curve analysis, the MPV/PC ratio was associated with a sensitivity of 67.8% and a specificity of 84.8% at a cutoff value of 0.47424 for presence of brain metastasis at the time of diagnosis. Univariate analysis showed that OS was significantly shorter in the group with an increased MPV level than in the other group (median OS time 6.8 months vs. 11.5 months, log-rank, P = .032). Multivariate analysis confirmed that an increased MPV level was an independent poor prognostic factor for OS (HR: 1.704, 95% CI: 1.274-3.415, P = .014). CONCLUSIONS Unlike results of previous studies, the study showed that increased MPV was an important prognostic factor in patients with NSCLC. Hence, an increased MPV level may be used as a prognostic biomarker to estimate for poor overall survival in patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer and the second cause of cancer-related mortalities worldwide. Platelets play an important and multifaceted role in cancer progression. Elevated mean platelet volume (MPV) detected in peripheral blood has been identified in various types of cancer. In the present study, we investigated the application value of MPV in early diagnostic and prognostic prediction in patients with resectable gastric cancer. In total, 168 patients with resectable gastric cancer were included and separated into the gastric cancer and healthy control groups according to median pre-operatic MPV value (MPV low, <10.51 or MPV high, ≥10.51). The results showed that the pre-operatic MPV level was significantly higher in gastric cancer patients compared with the healthy subjects. Low pre-operatic MPV level correlated with improved clinicopathological features, including decreased depth of invasion, less lymphonodus metastasis and early tumor stage. The Kaplan-Meier plots showed that the patients with higher pre-operatic MPV had decreased overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Surgical tumor resection resulted in a significant decrease in the MPV level. The patients whose MPV level decreased following surgery had an improved OS. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the depth of invasion, lymphonodus metastasis, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage, and changes in MPV following surgery were prognostic factors affecting OS, and the AJCC stage and pre-operatic MPV were prognostic factors affecting DFS. In conclusion, MPV measurement can provide important diagnostic and prognostic results in patients with resectable gastric cancer.

Abstract
Bleeding complications are frequent and independently predict mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). It has been demonstrated that certain platelet parameters are indicative of platelet reactivity. We sought to determine the possible correlation between simple platelet indices and bleeding complications in patients undergoing TAVI. Platelet indices--platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width and plateletcrit--were measured in 110 consecutive patients on the day preceding TAVI. In-hospital bleeding events after TAVI were assessed according to the Valve Academic Research Consortium-2 classification as any bleeding, major and life-threatening bleeding (MLTB) and need for transfusion. By receiver-operating characteristic analysis, only MPV was able to distinguish between patients with and without any bleeding [area under the curve (AUC) 0.629, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.531-0.719, P = 0.0342], MLTB (AUC 0.730, 95% CI 0.637-0.811, P = 0.0004) and need for transfusion (AUC 0.660, 95% CI 0.563-0.747, P = 0.0045). By multivariate logistic regression, high MPV (>10.6) and low platelet distribution width (<14.8) were associated with increased risk of any bleeding [odds ratio (OR) 4.08, 95% CI 1.66-10.07, P = 0.0022; and OR 3.82, 95% CI 1.41-10.36, P = 0.0084, respectively] and MLTB (OR 10.76, 95% CI 3.05-38, P = 0.0002; and OR 8.46, 95% CI 1.69-42.17, P = 0.0092, respectively). Additionally, high MPV independently correlated with the need for transfusion (OR 4.11, 95% CI 1.71-9.86, P = 0.0016). Larger and less heterogenic platelets may be associated with increased risk of short-term bleeding complications after TAVI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether there was any relationship between tinnitus and mean platelet volume. METHODS This retrospective study was conducted between January 2013 and January 2014 in Ankara Atatürk Hospital and Ondokuz Mayıs University Hospital, Turkey, on a study group of 86 patients with tinnitus and a control group of 84 healthy subjects. Mean platelet volume was recorded and comparisons were made between the two groups. RESULTS Mean (± standard deviation) platelet volume was 7.67 ± 0.83 μm(3) in the study group and 7.28 ± 0.56 μm(3) in the control group. There was a statistically significant difference in mean platelet volume between the tinnitus patients and the healthy subjects (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The clinical findings indicated that tinnitus patients had a higher mean platelet volume than the healthy control subjects; however, the pathophysiological mechanism remains unclear.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer and the second cause of cancer-related mortalities worldwide. Platelets play an important and multifaceted role in cancer progression. Elevated mean platelet volume (MPV) detected in peripheral blood has been identified in various types of cancer. In the present study, we investigated the application value of MPV in the prediction of chemotherapy response and prognosis in patients with unresectable gastric cancer. A total of 128 patients with unresectable gastric cancer were included and divided according to the median values of baseline MPV (low MPV: <11.65 or high MPV: ≥11.65). A low baseline MPV level was correlated with reduced metastasis. The results showed that patients with a low baseline level of MPV improved response to chemotherapy. Changes in MPV were associated with therapeutic efficacy. Patients who remained in or were transferred into the low MPV level subgroup following first-line chemotherapy had improved response, compared to those remaining in or being transferred into the high MPV level group. The patients with a higher baseline MPV had decreased progression-free and overall survival ratios. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that baseline MPV was a prognostic factor affecting progression-free survival. In conclusion, the results showed that MPV measurements can provide important prognostic information for gastric cancer patients.
