Abstract
Leptin links peripheral adiposity and the central nervous system (CNS) to regulate cardiometabolic physiology. Within the CNS, leptin receptor-expressing cells are a counterpart to circulating leptin, and leptin receptor-mediated neural networks modulate the output of neuroendocrine and sympathetic nervous activity to balance cardiometabolic homeostasis. Therefore, disrupted CNS leptin signaling is directly implicated in the development of metabolic diseases, such as hypertension, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Independently, maternal leptin also plays a central role in the development and growth of the infant during gestation. Accumulating evidence points to the dynamic maternal leptin environment as a predictor of cardiometabolic fate in their offspring as it is directly associated with infant metabolic parameters at birth. In postnatal life, the degree of serum leptin is representative of the level of body adiposity/weight, a driving factor for cardiometabolic alterations, and therefore, the levels of blood leptin through the CNS mechanism, in a large part, are a strong determinant for future cardiometabolic fate. The current review focuses on highlighting and discussing recent updates for temporal dissection of leptin-associated programing of future cardiometabolic fate throughout the entire life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid level, which is an oxidative stress marker, may increase in some conditions that lay the ground for the hypoxia. However, recent literature lacks studies with large series on this subject. We aimed to examine the incidence of OSAS in mothers who delivered a low birth weight baby and its association with serum uric acid levels as a hypoxia marker. METHODS We enrolled 143 pregnant women, 44 of whom delivered a low birth weight (LBW) baby. We made a face-to-face interview in which we asked the questions in the patient follow-up form, comprising three sections. The form included questions regarding the sociodemographic features and obstetric history of the participant women, besides the Berlin Questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. We recorded the blood test parameters that are obtained from patient records in the last section. RESULTS Mean uric acid (UA) levels of mothers with a LBW baby (n = 44, birth weight below 2500 g) were 4.51 ± 1.23 mg/dL (min-max = 2.7-8.0) while the UA levels in mothers of normal weighted (NBW) babies (n = 99, birth weight is 2500 g or above) were 4.08 ± 0.75 (min-max = 2.6-6.1 mg/dL). The UA levels of mothers who delivered LBW infants were significantly higher compared with the mothers of NBW babies (p = .010). CONCLUSION Uric acid levels can be used as a prognostic parameter for the closer monitoring of pregnant women who have been diagnosed with small-for-gestational-age babies during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Birth weight is very important for long-term physical, mental, health, and brain development. Pesticide exposure is thought to interfere with fetal growth, among others, through disruption of the function of the insulin-like growth hormone-1 (IGF-1) hormone. OBJECTIVE To analyze the relationship between exposure to pesticides during pregnancy and low-birth weight (LBW) through the disruption of the IGF-1 hormone. METHODS In a case-control study, babies born with LBW (birth weight <2500 g) and those born later with normal birth weight (=2500 g) at 2 hospitals in Brebes were chosen as cases and controls, respectively. Maternal pesticide exposure was measured by interview using a questionnaire. Umbilical serum IGF-I level was tested using the ELISA method. RESULTS There was a significant relationship between pesticide exposure during pregnancy and LBW (OR 6.8; 95% CI 2.0 to 22.9) and low umbilical serum IGF-1 levels (OR 3.6; 95% CI 1.2 to 11.1). There was a significant relationship between low umbilical serum IGF-1 levels and LBW (OR 8.9; 95% CI 2.4 to 32.1). CONCLUSION There was a significant relationship between pesticide exposure during pregnancy and LBW through the umbilical serum IGF-1 reduction pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanisms mediating the impacts of fetal growth restriction (FGR) on follicular development are commonly studied in mouse/rat models, where ovarian development occurs largely during the early postnatal period. These models have shown that FGR is associated with premature follicle loss, early pubertal onset, and accelerated ovarian aging. Whether the same occurs in precocious species is unknown. OBJECTIVE Since guinea pig follicle development occurs in utero in a manner consistent with human ovarian development, we sought to determine whether FGR had similar impacts on guinea pig ovarian development. METHODS Dunkin-Hartley guinea pig dams were randomized to receive a control (CON) or a nutrient-restricted diet (FGR) prior to conception until weaning. Offspring ovaries were collected at prepubertal (postnatal day [P] 25) and young adult (P110) time points. RESULTS Prepubertal offspring exposed to FGR showed little differences in ovarian transcript levels and follicle counts. Young adult FGR offspring, however, showed reductions in the number of transitioning, primary, and antral follicles, as well as corpora lutea. This loss in follicles was associated with reduced insulin-like growth factor receptor and growth differentiation factor-9 messenger RNA levels in FGR P110 offspring compared to CON. CONCLUSION We demonstrate that FGR in guinea pigs is accompanied by perturbations in signaling pathways essential for proper follicle growth and manifests as reductions in growing follicles in offspring, but these changes do not manifest until postpuberty. These data support the fact that accelerated reproductive maturation/aging is a conserved phenotype that is associated with in utero nutritional adversity.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the possible associations of miRNA-27a and Leptin polymorphisms with the risk of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). Material/Methods Between May 2013 and April 2015 at Shenzhen Longhua New District Central Hospital, we randomly recruited 138 RSA patients as the case group and another 142 normal pregnancy women as the control group. We used denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) to determine the genotypes and allele frequencies of miRNA-27a rs895819 A/G and Leptin rs7799039 G/A. Results The GG genotype and G allele frequencies of miRNA-27a rs895819 A/G were higher in the case group than in the control group, and the AA genotype and A allele frequencies of Leptin rs7799039 G/A were also higher in the case group than in the control group (all P<0.05). MiRNA-27a rs895819 A/G and Leptin rs7799039 G/A polymorphisms increased the risk of RSA (Exp (B)=2.732, 95% CI=1.625~4.596, P=0.000; Exp (B)=4.081, 95% CI=1.817~9.164, P=0.001). GG-AA or AG-AA carriers had a higher risk of RSA. The miRNA-27a expression of AA carriers of miRNA-27a rs895819 was lower than that of AG+GG carriers both in the case and control groups (all P=0.024). The plasma leptin concentration of GG carriers was lower than that of GA+AA carriers in the case group (P=0.026). Conclusions The polymorphisms of miRNA-27a rs895819 A/G and Leptin rs7799039 G/A may contribute to an increased risk of RSA.
