Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem and is highly prevalent among justice-involved populations. Pediatric TBI is linked with long-term negative outcomes and is correlated with substance use, criminal behavior, psychiatric disorders, and disruptions in neurocognition. These same TBI correlates are evident among youth with psychopathic traits. Given ongoing neurobiological and social development in adolescence, understanding the link between psychopathic traits and TBI in justice-involved youth is critical. A sample of 263 male adolescents were recruited from a maximum-security juvenile justice facility. Using a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework, measurement invariance of psychopathic traits (TBI ±) was tested, and psychopathy scores were accounted for in terms of TBI variables (severity, age of first TBI, total number), participant's age, IQ, substance use, and internalizing psychopathology. There was evidence of strong invariance across TBI status and those with TBI had higher affective and impulsive lifestyle psychopathic traits than adolescents without TBI. The SEM indicated that TBI severity was associated with lower IQ scores, which in turn were associated with increased lifestyle/antisocial (Factor 2) psychopathic traits. Total number of TBIs was associated with higher substance use, which was associated with both increased interpersonal/affective (Factor 1) and Factor 2 psychopathic traits. These TBI variables also had indirect associations with psychopathic traits through IQ and substance use. The findings indicate that TBI is associated with psychopathic traits and suggest that disturbances in cognition and substance use may be treatment targets for youth with TBI and psychopathic traits.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, is highly prevalent among individuals who intersect with the criminal justice system (CJS). It is well-established that TBI negatively impacts individuals' interactions both within the CJS and upon release and is associated with serious disciplinary charges and higher recidivism rates. Although rehabilitation is fundamental to TBI recovery, it is not known to what extent rehabilitation is available to, or used by, individuals who intersect with the CJS. This scoping review explores the availability and extent of rehabilitation for individuals with TBI who intersect with the CJS, based on available literature. A systematic search of electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL Register of Clinical Trials, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, and Proquest Nursing and Allied Health), relevant organizations' websites, and reference lists of eligible articles identified 22 peer-reviewed articles and 2 gray literature reports that met predetermined eligibility criteria. Extracted data were synthesized through a descriptive numerical summary and qualitative content analysis. This review provides evidence that existing rehabilitation interventions are already serving individuals with TBI with a history of CJS involvement; however, they rarely consider or acknowledge TBI or CJS in their interventions. Findings also suggest opportunities to integrate rehabilitation for individuals with TBI who intersect with the CJS through TBI screening, education on TBI within CJS settings, and linkages to the community to facilitate continuity of care. This review also highlights significant gaps in knowledge regarding sex, gender, and other intersecting factors. Research to understand how these experiences impact the rehabilitation process throughout the CJS is urgently needed to enable timely and appropriate rehabilitation and continuity of care for diverse individuals with TBI who intersect with the CJS.

Abstract
PURPOSE Little is known about obstacles to health and rehabilitation services experienced by people with acquired brain injury (ABI) over time and what impact these have on recovery. This study utilised the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model to better understand the impact of service obstacles. The aims were: (1) describe and compare service obstacles reported in the 12-months post-discharge from inpatient rehabilitation; (2) examine service obstacles as a moderator of the relationship between functional impairment and activities and participation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prospective survey of 41 people who received ABI inpatient rehabilitation in Queensland, Australia. Validated self-report measures of service obstacles, functional impairment, and activities and participation were administered at 6- and 12-months post-discharge. RESULTS Transportation was the highest-rated obstacle at 6-months post-discharge, and this decreased at 12-months. Dissatisfaction with treatment resources and financial obstacles were, on average, low-to-moderate and remained constant. Specifically, the moderation analyses showed that financial obstacles may exacerbate the negative impact of functional impairment on independent living skills. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that people living in Queensland, Australia, who experience financial obstacles to services after brain injury may be at risk of poorer recovery outcomes. Rehabilitation policy should consider prioritising individuals who experience financial obstacles to accessing services.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIn Queensland, Australia, financial obstacles to accessing health services after brain injury may exacerbate the negative impact of functional impairment on independent living skills, in the first 12-months after hospital discharge.There may be a need to prioritize rehabilitation policy that targets individuals who experience financial obstacles to accessing health and rehabilitation services, after brain injury, irrespective of a health system's potential to enable access.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common injuries resulting from U.S. Military engagements since 2001. Long-term consequences in terms of healthcare utilization are unknown. We sought to evaluate healthcare expenditures among U.S. military service members with TBI, as compared to a matched cohort of uninjured individuals. METHODS We identified service members who were treated for an isolated combat-related TBI between 2007 and 2011. Controls consisted of hospitalized active duty service members, without any history of combat-related injury, matched by age, biologic sex, year of hospitalization, and duration of follow-up. Median total healthcare expenditures over the entire surveillance period represented our primary outcome. Expenditures in the first year (365 days) following injury (hospitalization for controls) and for subsequent years (366th day to last healthcare encounter) were considered secondarily. Negative binomial regression was used to identify the adjusted influence of TBI. RESULTS The TBI cohort consisted of 634 individuals, and there were 1,268 controls. Healthcare expenditures among those with moderate/severe TBI (median $154,335; interquartile range [IQR] $88,088-$360,977) were significantly higher as compared to individuals with mild TBI (median $113,951; IQR $66,663-$210,014) and controls (median $43,077; IQR $24,403-$83,590; P < .001). Most expenditures were incurred during the first year following injury. CONCLUSION This investigation represents the first continuous observation of healthcare utilization among individuals with combat-related TBI. Our findings speak to continued consumption of health care well beyond the immediate postinjury period, resulting in total expenditures approximately six to seven times higher than those of service members hospitalized for noncombat-related reasons.

Abstract
PURPOSE Trajectories of Rehabilitation across Complex Environments (TRaCE), a consented prospective cohort study, addresses a critical need to better understand access to the healthcare system after acute treatment and specialist inpatient rehabilitation for acquired disability. It is expected that this study will produce new knowledge on access to healthcare through the linkage of administrative, survey, and spatial datasets on the one cohort. This paper outlines the study design and baseline characteristics of the cohort. METHODS The TRaCE cohort is comprised of 165 inpatients who are currently being followed up for 12 months after discharge from specialist rehabilitation for acquired brain injury (ABI) and spinal cord injury (SCI). This project combines a data linkage framework on health service use with a prospective survey on psychosocial wellbeing, geographical information systems to examine spatial accessibility to services, and qualitative interviews with a sub-cohort on experiences of service access. CONCLUSION Ultimately, TRaCE will have strong translational impact on strategies for more targeted interventions to improve the healthcare system and support individuals with acquired disabilities in the long-term.
