Valorization of rendering industry wastes and co-products for industrial chemicals, materials and energy: review

Fine-Tuning Pyridoxal 5'-Phosphate Synthesis in Escherichia coli for Cadaverine Production in Minimal Culture Media

Cadaverine is a critical C5 monomer for the production of polyamides. Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), as a crucial cofactor for the key enzyme lysine decarboxylase in the cadaverine biosynthesis pathway, has seen a persistent shortage, leading to limitations in cadaverine production. To address this issue, a dual-pathway strategy was implemented, synergistically enhancing both endogenous and heterologous PLP synthesis modules and resulting in improved PLP synthesis. Subsequently, a growth-stage-dependent molecular switch was introduced to balance the precursor competition between PLP synthesis and cell growth. Additionally, a PLP sensor-based negative feedback circuit was constructed by integrating a newly identified PLP-responsive promoter PygjH and an arabinose-regulated system, dynamically regulating the expression of the PLP synthetic genes and preventing excessive intracellular PLP accumulation. The optimal strain, L18, cultivated in the minimal medium AM1, demonstrated cadaverine production with a titer, yield, and productivity of 64.03 g/L, 0.23 g/g glucose, and 1.33 g/L/h, respectively. This represents the highest titer reported to date in engineered Escherichia coli by fed-batch fermentation in a minimal medium.

Closing the Nutrient Loop-The New Approaches to Recovering Biomass Minerals during the Biorefinery Processes

The recovery of plant mineral nutrients from the bio-based value chains is essential for a sustainable, circular bioeconomy, wherein resources are (re)used sustainably. The widest used approach is to recover plant nutrients on the last stage of biomass utilization processes-e.g., from ash, wastewater, or anaerobic digestate. The best approach is to recover mineral nutrients from the initial stages of biomass biorefinery, especially during biomass pre-treatments. Our paper aims to evaluate the nutrient recovery solutions from a trans-sectorial perspective, including biomass processing and the agricultural use of recovered nutrients. Several solutions integrated with the biomass pre-treatment stage, such as leaching/bioleaching, recovery from pre-treatment neoteric solvents, ionic liquids (ILs), and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) or integrated with hydrothermal treatments are discussed. Reducing mineral contents on silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen biomass before the core biorefinery processes improves processability and yield and reduces corrosion and fouling effects. The recovered minerals are used as bio-based fertilizers or as silica-based plant biostimulants, with economic and environmental benefits.

Biological production of 2-propanol from propane using a metabolically engineered type I methanotrophic bacterium

2-Propanol is a widely used industrial solvents. Herein, we employed a unique feature of type I methanotrophic bacterium Methylotuvimicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z possessing only particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) for one-step direct production of pure 2-propanol from propane. By maintaining cell growth on glycerol, and after deletion of both Ca²⁺-dependent and La³⁺-dependent methanol dehydrogenases, propane was converted to 2-propanol by pMMO. Although most of the 2-propanol produced was further oxidized to acetone, deletion of active alcohol dehydrogenase, concomitant with synchronous overexpression of secondary alcohol dehydrogenase, significantly inhibited such undesirable oxidation. As a result, a remarkable enhancement (263 mg/L) of 2-propanol was achieved for 120 h by increasing cell growth with a supply of 50% (v/v) propane in headspace. This is the first demonstration to develop an engineered methanotrophic strain for the one-step direct production of pure 2-propanol from propane using one-phase cultivation without the supply of chemical inhibitors or additional reducing-power sources.

Protein by-products: Composition, extraction, and biomedical applications

Significant upsurge in animal by-products such as skin, bones, wool, hides, feathers, and fats has become a global challenge and, if not properly disposed of, can spread contamination and viral diseases. Animal by-products are rich in proteins, which can be used as nutritional, pharmacologically functional ingredients, and biomedical materials. Therefore, recycling these abundant and renewable by-products and extracting high value-added components from them is a sustainable approach to reclaim animal by-products while addressing scarce landfill resources. This article appraises the most recent studies conducted in the last five years on animal-derived proteins' separation and biomedical application. The effort encompasses an introduction about the composition, an overview of the extraction and purification methods, and the broad range of biomedical applications of these ensuing proteins.

Biofertilizers and nanofertilizers for sustainable agriculture: Phycoprospects and challenges

Increased food demands and ceasing nutrient deposits have resulted in a great shortfall between the food supply and demand and would be worse in the years to come. Higher inputs of synthetic fertilizers on lands have resulted in environmental pollution, persistent changes in the soil ecology, and physicochemical conditions. This has greatly decreased the natural soil fertility thereby hindering agricultural productivity, human health, and hygiene. Bio-based resilient nutrient sources as wastewater-derived algae are promising as a complete nutrient for agriculture and have the potential to be used in soilless cultivations. Innovations in nano-fortification and nano-sizing of minerals and algae have the potential to facilitate nutrients bioavailability and efficacy for a multifold increase in productivity. In this context, various options on minerals nanofertilizer application in agricultural food production besides efficient biofertilizer have been investigated. Algal biofertilizer with the nanoscale application has huge prospects for further agriculture productivities and fosters suitable development.

Dealing With Deadstock: A Case Study of Carnivore Conflict Mitigation From Southwestern Alberta

Livestock deaths are an unfortunate reality for livestock producers and dead livestock (i.e., deadstock) disposal options can have implications beyond the ranch itself. In Alberta, Canada, natural disposal (i.e., disposing of the carcass in a manner that allows for scavenging) has increased since the 2003 detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Canadian cattle. Prior to BSE, rendering companies removed deadstock for free. However, rendering companies started charging producers to remove deadstock to offset costs associated with new regulatory requirements enacted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which has resulted in increased on-farm natural disposal of deadstock. This increase has ecological implications because deadstock are a major attractant for large carnivores. Carnivores feeding on deadstock are often near other agricultural attractants such as stored grain and feed, silage, and living livestock, which can exacerbate conflict potential and pose a risk to human safety. To help mitigate conflicts associated with deadstock, the Waterton Biosphere Reserve's (a local non-profit) Carnivores and Communities Program (CACP) supported expansion of community deadstock removal efforts beginning in 2009, including reimbursement of on-farm removal costs, bear-resistant deadstock bins, and a livestock compost facility (operational 2013–2014). Here, we present an evaluative case study describing the development, implementation, and results of the deadstock removal program, including the compost facility. We tracked the number of head of livestock removed each year, the number of participating landowners, the average cost per head, and total program costs. We also used an online survey to assess participants' perspectives of the deadstock removal program and future needs. To date, the CACP has removed >5,400 livestock carcasses, representing between 15.1 and 22.6% of available carcasses in the program area, and 67.3% of livestock owners indicated they currently use the deadstock removal program to dispose of deadstock. Average cost to compost an animal was significantly less than other removal methods ($36.89 composting vs. $79.59 non-composting, one-tailed t-test, unequal sampling variances: t = 4.08, df = 5.87, p = 0.003). We conclude by discussing both ecological and social implications for deadstock removal as a conflict mitigation measure and make suggestions for future management considerations.

Ameliorating end-product inhibition to improve cadaverine production in engineered Escherichia coli and its application in the synthesis of bio-based diisocyanates

Cadaverine is an important C5 platform chemical with a wide range of industrial applications. However, the cadaverine inhibition on the fermenting strain limited its industrial efficiency of the strain. In this study, we report an engineered Escherichia coli strain with high cadaverine productivity that was generated by developing a robust host coupled with metabolic engineering to mitigate cadaverine inhibition. First, a lysine producing E. coli was treated with a combination of radiation (ultraviolet and visible spectrum) and ARTP (atmospheric and room temperature plasma) mutagenesis to obtain a robust host with high cadaverine tolerance. Three mutant targets including HokD, PhnI and PuuR are identified for improved cadaverine tolerance. Further transcriptome analysis suggested that cadaverine suppressed the synthesis of ATP and lysine precursor. Accordingly, the related genes involved in glycolysis and lysine precursor, as well as cadaverine exporter was engineered to release the cadaverine inhibition. The final engineered strain was fed-batch cultured and a titer of 58.7 g/L cadaverine was achieved with a yield of 0.396 g/g, both of which were the highest level reported to date in E. coli. The bio-based cadaverine was purified to >99.6% purity, and successfully used for the synthesis of polyurethane precursor 1,5-pentamethylene diisocyanate (PDI) through the approach of carbamate decomposition.

Management of meat by- and co-products for an improved meat processing sustainability

Large amounts of meat by- and co-products are generated during slaughtering and meat processing, and require rational management of these products for an ecological disposal. Efficient solutions are very important for sustainability and innovative developments create high added-value from meat by-products with the least environmental impact, handling and disposal costs, in its transition to bioeconomy. Some proteins have relevant technological uses for gelation, foaming and emulsification while protein hydrolyzates may contribute to a better digestibility and palatability. Protein hydrolysis generate added-value products such as bioactive peptides with relevant physiological effects of interest for applications in the food, pet food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. Inedible fats are increasingly used as raw material for the generation of biodiesel. Other applications are focused on the development of new biodegradable plastics that can constitute an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. This manuscript presents the latest developments for adding value to meat by- and co-products and discusses opportunities for making meat production and processing more sustainable.

3D-Printed Bioplastics with Shape-Memory Behavior Based on Native Bovine Serum Albumin

Bio-based plastics that can supplant petroleum-derived materials are necessary to meet the future demands of sustainability in the life cycle of plastic materials. While there are significant efforts to develop protein-based plastic materials for commercial use, their application is limited by poor processability and limitations in mechanical performance. Here, we present a bovine serum albumin (BSA)-based resin for stereolithographic apparatus (SLA) 3D printing that affords bioplastic objects with shape-memory behavior. We demonstrate that the native conformation of these globular proteins is largely retained in the 3D-printed constructs and that each protein molecule possesses a "stored length" that could be revealed during mechanical deformation (extension or compression) of the 3D bioplastic objects. While the plastically deformed objects could retain this state for an indefinite period of time, heating the object or submerging in water allowed it to return to its original 3D-printed shape.

The link to polysulfides and their applications

This article highlights recent discoveries within the field of polysulfides which are created from waste sulfur through inverse vulcanisation. Due to the current environmental climate, making materials from renewable resources or industrial waste is highly desirable. Sulfur is an impurity refined out of petroleum and gas reserves at a rate of more than 70 million tonnes a year and is currently used in the rubber, fertiliser and chemical industries. However, even with these applications, the usage is significantly below the amount refined each year, leading to large stockpiles of sulfur. Inverse vulcanisation is an attractive method to synthesize new sulfur based materials by trapping the polysulfide using crosslinkers containing diene functionalities. A wide variety of unsaturated crosslinkers can be incorporated into polysulfide materials resulting in inorganic rubbers, combining the benefits of both components. The materials produced have been shown to selectively absorb mercury, are prominsing replacements for existing mid IR lenses, and can be used as capsules for controlled release fertilisers. An overview of the field, including the breadth of crosslinkers employed, synthetic strategies, and the properties and potential applications of polysulfides created through inverse vulcanisation, is captured.

Using Specified Risk Materials-Based Peptides for Oil Sands Fluid Fine Tailings Management

Fluid fine tailings are produced in huge quantities by Canada's mined oil sands industry. Due to the high colloidal stability of the contained fine solids, settling of fluid fine tailings can take hundreds of years, making the entrapped water unavailable and posing challenges to public health and the environment. This study focuses on developing value-added aggregation agents from specified risk materials (SRM), a waste protein stream from slaughterhouse industries, to achieve an improved separation of fluid fine tailings into free water and solids. Settling results using synthetic kaolinite slurries demonstrated that, though not as effective as hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, a commercial flocculant, the use of SRM-derived peptides enabled a 2-3-fold faster initial settling rate than the blank control. The pH of synthetic kaolinite tailings was observed to be slightly reduced with increasing peptides dosage in the test range (10-50 kg/ton). The experiments on diluted fluid fine tailings (as a representation of real oil sands tailings) demonstrated an optimum peptides dosage of 14 kg/ton, which resulted in a 4-fold faster initial settling rate compared to the untreated tailings. Overall, this study demonstrates the novelty and feasibility of using SRM-peptides to address intractable oil sands fluid tailings.

A review on recovery of proteins from industrial wastewaters with special emphasis on PHA production process: Sustainable circular bioeconomy process development

The economy of the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production process could be supported by utilising the different by-products released simultaneously during its production. Among these, proteins are present in high concentrations in liquid stream which are released after the cell disruption along with PHA granules. These microbial proteins can be used as animal feed, adhesive material and in manufacturing of bioplastics. The recycling of the protein containing liquid stream also serves as a promising approach to maintain circular bioeconomy in the route. For this aim, it is important to obtain good yield and limit the drawbacks of protein recovery processes and associated costs. The review focuses on recycling of the liquid stream generated during acid/thermal-alkali treatment for PHA production that would close the gap in linear economy and attain circularity in the process. Examples to recover proteins from other industrial waste streams along with their applications have also been discussed.

Preparation and Modification of Biomass-Based Functional Rubbers for Removing Mercury(II) from Aqueous Solution

Biomass-based functional rubber adsorbents were designed and prepared via inverse vulcanization and post-modification. The plant rubber was synthesized with sulfur and renewable cottonseed oil as well as various micromolecular modifiers with nitrogen-containing functional groups. Results showed that types of nitrogen-containing functional groups and dosages of modifiers had a significant impact on the adsorption capacities of the resulting polymers for Hg2+. Notably, when the mass ratio of 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (AEMA) to sulfur was 0.05, the resulting polymer polysulfide-co-cottonseed oil modified by AEMA (SCOA2) showed the highest adsorption capacity (343.3 mg g-1) among all the prepared samples. Furthermore, the Hg2+ removal efficiency of SCOA2 remained over 80% of its original value after five adsorption-desorption cycles. It demonstrated a promising case for utilizing cheap industrial by-products (sulfur) and renewable materials (cottonseed oil). The prepared functional rubber provides alternative approach for mercury removal in waste utilization and sustainable chemistry.

Bio-based fertilizers: A practical approach towards circular economy

Although for the past 100 years, fertilizer technologies have increasingly used renewable resources, the majority of manufactured products are still based on mineral deposits and fossil fuels. The European Commission has set a goal of 30% reduction of non-renewable resources in fertilizer production. This can only be accomplished if there are incentives for wastes valorization and fines for making use of non-renewable raw materials. This will enable the reduction of eutrophication of surface waters due to the presence of nitrogen and phosphorus, originating from agricultural fields fertilizers. The use of biological waste is a practical solution to recover valuable fertilizer components. In order to effectively implement technologies based on biological resources, it is necessary to construct small wastes solubilization or fertilizer installations at the site of waste generation, which will solve the problem of waste transport or sanitary hazards.

Catalytic inverse vulcanization

The discovery of inverse vulcanization has allowed stable polymers to be made from elemental sulfur, an unwanted by-product of the petrochemicals industry. However, further development of both the chemistry and applications is handicapped by the restricted choice of cross-linkers and the elevated temperatures required for polymerisation. Here we report the catalysis of inverse vulcanization reactions. This catalytic method is effective for a wide range of crosslinkers reduces the required reaction temperature and reaction time, prevents harmful H2S production, increases yield, improves properties, and allows crosslinkers that would be otherwise unreactive to be used. Thus, inverse vulcanization becomes more widely applicable, efficient, eco-friendly and productive than the previous routes, not only broadening the fundamental chemistry itself, but also opening the door for the industrialization and broad application of these fascinating materials.

Sustainable Animal Protein-Intermeshed Epoxy Hybrid Polymers: From Conquering Challenges to Engineering Properties

The presence of highly modifiable chemical functional groups, abundance of functional groups, and their biological origin make proteins an important class of biomaterials from a fundamental science and applied engineering perspective. Hence, the utilization of proteins from the animal rendering industry (animal protein, AP) for high-value, nonfeed, and nonfertilizer applications is intensely pursued. Although this leads to the exploration of protein-derived plastics as a plausible alternative, the proposed methods are energy-intensive and not based on protein in its native form, which leads to high processing and production costs. Here, we propose, for the first time, novel pathways to develop engineered hybrid systems utilizing AP in its native form and epoxy resins with mechanical properties ranging from toughened thermosets to elastic epoxy-based systems. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability to engineer the properties of epoxy-AP hybrids from high-strength hybrids to elastic films through controlling the interaction, hydrophilicity, as well as the extent of cross-linking and network density. Through the facile introduction of cochemicals, a sevenfold increase in the mechanical properties of the conventional epoxy-AP hybrid is achieved. Similarly, because of better compatibility afforded by the similar hydrophilicity, AP demonstrated higher cross-linking capability with a water-soluble epoxy (WEP) matrix, resulting in an elastic WEP-AP hybrid without any external aid.

Characterization of the animal by-product meal industry in Costa Rica: Manufacturing practices through the production chain and food safety

Animal by-product rendering establishments are still relevant industries worldwide. Animal by-product meal safety is paramount to protect feed, animals, and the rest of the food chain from unwanted contamination. As microbiological contamination may arise from inadequate processing of slaughterhouse waste and deficiencies in good manufacturing practices within the rendering facilities, we conducted an overall establishment's inspection, including the product in several parts of the process.An evaluation of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) was carried out, which included the location and access (i.e., admission) to the facilities, integrated pest management programs, physical condition of the facilities (e.g., infrastructure), equipments, vehicles and transportation, as well as critical control points (i.e., particle size and temperature set at 50 mm, 133°C at atmospheric pressure for 20 min, respectively) recommended by the OIE and the European Commission. The most sensitive points according to the evaluation are physical structure of the facilities (avg 42.2%), access to the facilities (avg 48.6%), and cleaning procedures (avg 51.4%).Also, indicator microorganisms (Salmonella spp., Clostridium spp., total coliforms, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7) were used to evaluate the safety in different parts of the animal meal production process. There was a prevalence of Salmonella spp. of 12.9, 14.3, and 33.3% in Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), poultry by-products, and fish meal, respectively. However, there were no significant differences (P = 0.73) in the prevalence between the different animal meals, according to the data collected.It was also observed that renderings associated with the poultry industry (i.e., 92.0%) obtained the best ratings overall, which reflects a satisfactory development of this sector and the integration of its production system as a whole.

A Novel Process for Cadaverine Bio-Production Using a Consortium of Two Engineered Escherichia coli

Bio-production of cadaverine from cheap carbon sources for synthesizing bio-based polyamides is becoming more common. Here, a novel fermentation process for cadaverine bio-production from glucose was implemented by using a microbial consortium of two engineered Escherichia coli strains to relieve the toxic effect of cadaverine on fermentation efficiency. To achieve controllable growth of strains in the microbial consortium, two engineered E. coli strains grown separately on different carbon sources were first constructed. The strains were, an L-lysine-producing E. coli NT1004 with glucose as carbon source, and a cadaverine-producing E. coli CAD03 with glucose metabolism deficiency generated by modifying the PTS^Glc system with CRISPR-Cas9 technology and inactivating cadaverine degradation pathways. Co-culturing these two engineered E. coli strains with a mixture of glucose and glycerol led to successful production of cadaverine. After optimizing cultivation conditions, a cadaverine titer of 28.5 g/L was achieved with a multi-stage constant-speed feeding strategy.

Mixed bacterial culture mediated direct conversion of bio-glycerol to diols

Direct and economic transformation of biodiesel derived crude glycerol is gaining more significance. During screening of bacterial cultures Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes were able to convert crude bio-glycerol to 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) and 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), as major compounds, ethanol and acetoin as minor compounds, with a conversion of 69% and 79% respectively. Process optimization could achieve maximum conversion at pH 7.0, 37 °C, 30-40 g/L glycerol and 1.5 g of inoculum until 120 h. Mixed cultures led to complete glycerol conversion with optimal yield and productivity. An innovative approach of using crude glycerol for sustained growth and tolerance of bacteria as source of carbon and energy makes this study more significant. In addition to this, a mixed culture concept introduced here is expected to make impact in process economics for industrial scale synthesis for direct transformation of glycerol into C3 and specifically, C4 diols.

Effect of oxygen mass transfer rate on the production of 2,3-butanediol from glucose and agro-industrial byproducts by Bacillus licheniformis ATCC9789

BACKGROUND

2,3-Butanediol (BD) is a largely used fossil-based platform chemical. The yield and productivity of bio-based BD fermentative production must be increased and cheaper substrates need to be identified, to make bio-based BD production more competitive. As BD bioproduction occurs under microaerobic conditions, a fine tuning and control of the oxygen transfer rate (OTR) is crucial to maximize BD yield and productivity. Very few studies on BD bioproduction focused on the use of non-pathogenic microorganisms and of byproducts as substrate. The goal of this work was to optimize BD bioproduction by the non-pathogenic strain Bacillus licheniformis ATCC9789 by (i) identifying the ranges of volumetric and biomass-specific OTR that maximize BD yield and productivity using standard sugar and protein sources, and (ii) performing a preliminary evaluation of the variation in process performances and cost resulting from the replacement of glucose with molasses, and beef extract/peptone with chicken meat and bone meal, a byproduct of the meat production industry.

RESULTS

OTR optimization with an expensive, standard medium containing glucose, beef extract and peptone revealed that OTRs in the 7-15 mmol/L/h range lead to an optimal BD yield (0.43 ± 0.03 g/g) and productivity (0.91 ± 0.05 g/L/h). The corresponding optimal range of biomass-specific OTR was equal to 1.4-7.9 [Formula: see text], whereas the respiratory quotient ranged from 1.8 to 2.5. The switch to an agro-industrial byproduct-based medium containing chicken meat and bone meal and molasses led to a 50% decrease in both BD yield and productivity. A preliminary economic analysis indicated that the use of the byproduct-based medium can reduce by about 45% the BD production cost.

CONCLUSIONS

A procedure for OTR optimization was developed and implemented, leading to the identification of a range of biomass-specific OTR and respiratory quotient to be used for the scale-up and control of BD bioproduction by Bacillus licheniformis. The switch to a byproduct-based medium led to a relevant decrease in BD production cost. Further research is needed to optimize the process of BD bioproduction from the tested byproduct-based medium.

Improve Performance of Soy Flour-Based Adhesive with a Lignin-Based Resin

A lignin-based resin (LB) was used to improve the performance of soy flour-based adhesives. Soy flour (SF), polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE), and LB were used to develop a plywood adhesive. The solid content and viscosity of the adhesive, the functional groups, the thermo-stability, and the crystallinity of the cured adhesives were characterized, and the performance of the resultant adhesive was evaluated by fabricating three-ply plywood. Results showed that the LB and PAE mixture used to modify the SF adhesive improved both dry and wet bond strength by 66.3% and 184.2%, respectively. Therefore, the PAE improved the wet bond strength, and the LB improved the dry bond strength. The improvement was attributed to: (1) the reaction of LB/PAE with the functions of the soy protein to form a cross-linking network; (2) a polycondensation reaction between the LB molecules improved the crosslinking density of the adhesive to form an interpenetration structure with cross-linked proteins; and (3) the easy penetration of the LB into the wood surface that enhanced interlocking between the wood and adhesive. Furthermore, the denser structure created by the LB and the PAE mixture improved thermal stability and decreased the crystallinity of the cured adhesive. The use of the LB and the PAE mixture increased the solid content by 35.5%, while still making its viscosity acceptable for industrial applications.

Biodiesel production potential from fat fraction of municipal waste in Makkah

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), millions of Muslims come to perform Pilgrimage every year. Around one million ton of municipal solid waste (MSW) is generated in Makkah city annually. The collected MSW is disposed of in the landfills without any treatment or energy recovery. As a result, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contamination of the soil and water bodies along with leachate and odors are occurring in waste disposal vicinities. The composition of MSW shows that food waste is the largest waste stream (up to 51%) of the total generated MSW. About 13% of the food waste consists of fat content that is equivalent to about 64 thousand tons per year. This study aims to estimate the production potential of biodiesel first time in Makkah city from fat/oil fractions of MSW and highlight its economic and environmental benefits. It has been estimated that 62.53, 117.15 and 6.38 thousand tons of biodiesel, meat and bone meal (MBM) and glycerol respectively could be produced in 2014. A total electricity potential of 852 Gigawatt hour (GWh) from all three sources based on their energy contents, Higher Heating Value (HHV) of 40.17, 18.33 and 19 MJ/kg, was estimated for 2014 that will increase up to 1777 GWh in 2050. The cumulative net savings from landfill waste diversion (256 to 533 million Saudi Riyal (SAR)), carbon credits (46 to 96 million SAR), fuel savings (146 to 303 million SAR) and electricity generation (273 to 569 million SAR) have a potential to add a total net revenue of 611 to 1274 million SAR every year to the Saudi economy, from 2014 to 2050 respectively. However, further studies including real-time data about annual slaughtering activities and the amount of waste generation and its management are critical to decide optimum waste management practices based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) methodologies.
