Abstract
Arboviruses currently are regarded as a major worldwide public health concern. The clinical outcomes associated with this group of viruses may vary from asymptomatic infections to severe forms of haemorrhagic fever characterised by bleeding disorders. Similar to other systemic viral infections, arboviruses can either directly or indirectly affect different parts of the body, such as the urogenital system. The human urogenital system anatomically consists of two major subdivisions: (i) the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, which plays a significant role in osmoregulation, control of blood volume, pressure, and PH, absorption/excretion of different ions, and toxin metabolism, and (ii) the genital system, composed of the prostate, uterus, testes, ovaries, penis, and vagina, which are responsible for reproductive functions. Arboviruses can impair normal urogenital system functions by direct viral pathogen activity, systemic forms of inflammation, haemorrhagic events and related dysfunctions, and the nephrotoxic side effects of specific medications employed for treatment leading to various urogenital disorders. The present review provides an overview of the potential capacity of two main arboviruses, known as Zika and dengue viruses, to affect the urogenital system. Moreover, it addresses Zika virus as a potential therapeutic oncolytic virus for urogenital cancers.

Abstract
Dengue virus (DENV) infection represents a worldwide public health concern and can cause damage to multiple organs, including the kidney. In this work, we investigated the histopathological changes caused by dengue virus infection along with the detection of inflammatory mediators, cytokines, and cell expression patterns in the renal tissue of three fatal cases in children. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining was performed to analyze these histopathological changes. Immunohistochemistry allowed for the detection of immunological inflammatory markers in renal tissues that were quantified and further analyzed. Vascular congestion, edema and glomerular infiltrate were observed in the three cases, in addition to the thickening of the matrix area around the glomerular capillaries and mononuclear infiltrate associated with vascular congestion in the medullary region. The renal tissues exhibited collagen deposition and high expression of CD68+ Mø, CD8+ T, CD56+ cells and MMP-9, and the cytokine profile was mainly characterized by the expression of IFN-γ and TNF-α. Additionally, the expression of RANTES, VEGFR-2 and VCAM-1 were observed. The replication of DENV was evidenced by the detection of the NS3 protein. These results contributed to clarifying the main factors that may be involved in changes in the renal tissue of fatal cases of dengue in children.

Abstract
Dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) is, traditionally, the most studied serotype due to its association with explosive outbreaks and severe cases. In Brazil, almost 20 years after the first introduction in the 1990s, a new lineage (Lineage II) of the DENV-2 Asian/American genotype emerged and caused an epidemic with severe cases and hospitalizations. Severe dengue includes multiple organ failure, and renal involvement can be potentially related to increased mortality. In order to better understand the role of DENV infection in renal injury, here we aimed to investigate the outcomes of infection with two distinct lineages of DENV-2 Asian/American genotype in the kidney of a murine model. BALB/c mice were infected with Lineages I and II and tissues were submitted to histopathology, immunohistochemistry, histomorphometry and ultrastructural analysis. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was detected in blood sample accessed by cardiac puncture. A tendency in kidney weight increase was observed in mice infected with both lineages, but urea levels, on average, were increased only in mice infected with Lineage II. The DENV antigen was detected in the tissue of mice infected with Lineage II and morphological changes were similar to those observed in human dengue cases. Furthermore, the parameters such as organ weight, urea levels and morphometric analysis, showed significant differences between the two lineages in the infected BALB/c, which was demonstrated to be a suitable experimental model for dengue pathophysiology studies in kidneys.

Abstract
Dengue infection may manifest as dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). The World Health Organization (WHO) came up with the term "expanded dengue syndrome" (EDS) to designate cases which do not fall into either DHF or DSS, with unusual manifestations in other organs such as the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the kidneys, the gut, and the hematological system, which have been increasingly reported and called EDS. Furthermore, EDS is becoming widespread globally with unusual features and increased severity. There are increasing reports of under-recognized and infrequent manifestations with severe organ involvement. This review gives knowledge of expanded dengue syndrome which helps to catch the diagnosis of dengue early, particularly during the ongoing epidemics and escaping from further series of unnecessary investigations.

Abstract
In tropical and subtropical zones, arboviruses are among the major threats to human life, affecting a large number of populations with serious diseases. Worldwide, over three hundred million people are infected with dengue virus (DENV) every year as per the World Health Organization (WHO). DENV-mediated disease severity ranges from a mild fever to hemorrhagic fever and shock syndrome. Patients suffering from severe infection might experience multi-organ failure, cardiomyopathy and even encephalopathy, further complicating the disease pathogenesis. In life-threatening cases, DENV has been reported to affect almost all organs of the human body. In this review, we discuss the organ tropism of DENV in humans in depth as detected in various autopsy studies. Keeping in mind the fact that there is currently no DENV-specific antiviral, it is of utmost importance to achieve a vivid picture of the susceptible cells in humans which might help in designing antivirals against DENV, especially targeting those tissues in which infection might lead to life-threatening conditions.

Abstract
Dengue virus (DENV) infections may result in asymptomatic cases or evolve into a severe disease, which involves multiple organ failure. Renal involvement in dengue can be potentially related to an increased mortality. Aiming to better understand the role of DENV in renal injury observed in human fatal cases, post-mortem investigations were performed in four DENV-4 renal autopsies during dengue epidemics in Brazil. Tissues were submitted to histopathology, immunohistochemistry, viral quantification, and characterization of cytokines and inflammatory mediators. Probably due the high viral load, several lesions were observed in the renal tissue, such as diffuse mononuclear infiltration around the glomerulus in the cortical region and in the medullary vessels, hyalinosis arteriolar, lymphocytic infiltrate, increased capsular fibrosis, proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) damage, edema, PCT debris formation, and thickening of the basal vessel membrane. These changes were associated with DENV-4 infection, as confirmed by the presence of DENV-specific NS3 protein, indicative of viral replication. The exacerbated presence of mononuclear cells at several renal tissue sites culminated in the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Moreover, it can be suggested that the renal tissue injury observed here may have been due to the combination of both high viral load and exacerbated host immune response.

Abstract
The genus Flavivirus comprises approximately 73 viruses, which share several common aspects, such as dimension, structure, nucleic acid properties, and shape in electronic microscopy. Global incidence of flavivirus infection increased dramatically over the last decades, causing large outbreaks in several areas of the world. These viruses are expanding from endemic tropical and subtropical areas to previously nonendemic areas, affecting and causing diseases in millions of individuals worldwide and posing a formidable challenge to public health in several countries. The majority of clinically significant flavivirus-associated infections are mosquito borne (arboviruses-acronym for ARthropod-BOrne VIRUSES), such as dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, Zika, and West Nile fever. Most diseases caused by flaviviruses are asymptomatic or manifest as self-limited, mild, undifferentiated febrile diseases. In a limited number of cases, these diseases may evolve to severe inflammatory, multisystem diseases, causing high morbidity and mortality. Some flaviviruses have been consistently identified in kidney tissue and urine and have been clinically associated with kidney diseases. In this review, we will provide an overview of the epidemiology, risk factors, kidney pathology, etiopathogenesis, and outcomes of acute and chronic kidney syndromes associated with dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and West Nile virus disease.

Abstract
Dengue infection classically presents with fever, thrombocytopaenia, and varying degrees of plasma leakage, giving rise to shock. This review summarizes these varied presentations.

Abstract
Dengue infection has been associated with multiple renal complications, including glomerulonephritis, acute tubular necrosis, tubulointerstitial nephritis, and thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), this last one being a rare complication of dengue, with only a few reported cases. TMA associated with dengue can be explained by an alteration in the activity of the enzyme ADAMTS13, leading to thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura; or it can be secondary to direct or indirect endothelial injury by the virus, which leads to hemolytic uremic syndrome. Here, we present a case of severe TMA, not related to ADAMTS13, which was clearly associated with dengue infection.

Abstract
South and Southeast Asia and Latin American together comprise 46 countries and are home to approximately 40% of the world population. The sociopolitical and economic heterogeneity, tropical climate, and malady transitions characteristic of the region strongly influence disease behavior and health care delivery. Acute kidney injury epidemiology mirrors these inequalities. In addition to hospital-acquired acute kidney injury in tertiary care centers, these countries face a large preventable burden of community-acquired acute kidney injury secondary to tropical infectious diseases or animal venoms, affecting previously healthy young individuals. This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical picture, prevention, risk factors, and pathophysiology of acute kidney injury associated with tropical diseases (malaria, dengue, leptospirosis, scrub typhus, and yellow fever) and animal venom (snakes, bees, caterpillars, spiders, and scorpions) in tropical regions of Asia and Latin America, and discusses the potential future challenges due to emerging issues.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate proteinuria occurring during dengue disease in children and assess if measurement of this parameter can help physicians in the clinical management of patients. METHODS Proteinuria was assessed by dipstick and quantified by urine protein:creatinine ratio (UPCR) in samples from patients hospitalized with a confirmed dengue infection and in healthy controls. RESULTS The dipstick tested positive in 42.9% of the patients presenting at hospital with dengue versus 20.0% in healthy controls. UPCR increased during the critical phase of the disease; peaking one week after fever onset then decreasing as the patients recovered. Patients with warnings signs or severe dengue were more likely to present with proteinuria detected by UPCR at the time of hospital admission compared to patients without warning signs. The sensitivity of this marker, however, was limited as only 16.1% of the patients with warning signs had proteinuria. CONCLUSIONS Urine dipstick and UPCR do not seem to be very valuable for the triage of the patients at the time of the initial consultation but the observation of a decrease of the UPCR during the course of the illness appears to indicate an evolution towards recovery.

Abstract
We report a case of an eight-year-old male, native of the Dominican Republic, who visited the U.S. and was admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit with severe dengue. He needed aggressive fluid management for dengue shock syndrome and developed proteinuria on the sixth day of his illness, shortly after his nadir thrombocytopenia. His proteinuria peaked on the eight day, and reduced to trace levels by the tenth day of his illness, coinciding with normalization of his platelet count. His highest random urine protein/creatinine ratio was in the nephrotic range, at 3.9 g/g. Dengue fever can cause a wide spectrum of acute kidney injury (AKI), ranging in incidence from 0.9 to 36%. Review of the literature shows that nephrotic-range proteinuria is an uncommon complication of AKI caused by dengue, reported thus far only in Southeast Asia. Immune-mediated mechanisms may explain the observed association between dengue-induced thrombocytopenia and severe proteinuria, in this case, and previously reported cases. Dengue virus infection is the commonest mosquito-borne disease in the world with substantial morbidity and mortality. Well-designed prospective studies are needed to further characterize the extent and mechanisms of AKI in populations living in countries with ongoing transmission, as well as in those with travel-associated disease.

Abstract
Dengue is presently the most relevant viral infection transmitted by a mosquito bite that represents a major threat to public health worldwide. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious and potentially lethal complication of this disease, and the actual incidence is unknown. In this review, we will assess the most relevant epidemiological and clinical data regarding dengue and the available evidence on the frequency, etiopathogenesis, outcomes and treatment of dengue-associated AKI.

Abstract
Renal histology results are very scarce in dengue-associated
rhabdomyolysis patients developing acute kidney injury (AKI). We report a case of
dengue fever-induced AKI associated to rhabdomyolysis with a renal biopsy showing
acute tubular necrosis (ATN) and renal deposition of myoglobin. A 28-year-old patient
who presented dengue fever (DF) complicated by severe AKI and rhabdomyolysis is
described. The patient required hemodialysis for three weeks. A renal biopsy revealed
ATN with positive staining for myoglobin in the renal tubuli. The patient was
discharged with recovered renal function. In conclusion, this case report described a
biopsy proven ATN associated to DF-induced rhabdomyolysis, in which renal deposition
of myoglobin was demonstrated. We suggest that serum creatine phosphokinase should be
monitored in DF patients to allow for an early diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis and the
institution of renal protective measures.

Abstract
Renal damage in dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) has been reported in association with shock, haemolysis, rhabdomyolysis and sepsis. This report describes acute glomerulonephritis with DHF without the above-mentioned complications. A 3-year-old boy presented with fever, vomiting and oliguria. He had hypertension, deranged renal function and low serum complement (C3), and urine microscopy showed red blood cells and granular casts. The IgM and IgG ELISA (rapid test) for dengue virus were positive. He was managed with maintenance fluids, intravenous furosemide and supportive care. He made an uneventful recovery and was discharged 7 days after admission.
