Abstract
Autoimmunity is the break of tolerance to self-antigens that leads to organ-specific or systemic diseases often characterized by the presence of pathogenic autoreactive antibodies (AAb) produced by plasmablast and/or plasma cells. AAb are prevalent in the general population and not systematically associated with clinical symptoms. In contrast, in some individuals, these AAb are pathogenic and drive the development of signs and symptoms of antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases (AbAID). AAb production, isotype profiles, and glycosylations are promoted by pro-inflammatory triggers linked to genetic, environmental, and hormonal parameters. Recent evidence supports a role for pathogenic AAb of the IgE isotype in a number of AbAID. Autoreactive IgE can drive the activation of mast cells, basophils, and other types of FcεRI-bearing cells and may play a role in promoting autoantibody production and other pro-inflammatory pathways. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge on the pathogenicity of autoreactive IgE in AbAID and their status as therapeutic targets. We also highlight unresolved issues including the need for assays that reproducibly quantify IgE AAbs, to validate their diagnostic and prognostic value, and to further study their pathophysiological contributions to AbAID.

Abstract
Methods: We examined whether immune cell profiles differ between healthy women (n = 38) and breast cancer survivors (n = 27) within 2 years of treatment, and whether any group-differences were influenced by age, cytomegalovirus infection, cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition. Using flow cytometry, CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subsets, including naïve (NA), central memory (CM) and effector cells (EM and EMRA) were identified using CD27/CD45RA. Activation was measured by HLA-DR expression. Stem cell-like memory T cells (TSCMs) were identified using CD95/CD127. B cells, including plasmablasts, memory, immature and naïve cells were identified using CD19/CD27/CD38/CD10. Effector and regulatory Natural Killer cells were identified using CD56/CD16. Results: Compared to healthy women, CD4+ CM were +Δ21% higher among survivors (p = 0.028) and CD8+ NA were -Δ25% lower (p = 0.034). Across CD4+ and CD8+ subsets, the proportion of activated (HLA-DR+) cells was +Δ31% higher among survivors: CD4+ CM (+Δ25%), CD4+ EM (+Δ32%) and CD4+ EMRA (+Δ43%), total CD8+ (+Δ30%), CD8+ EM (+Δ30%) and CD8+ EMRA (+Δ25%) (p < 0.046). The counts of immature B cells, NK cells and CD16+ NK effector cells were higher among survivors (+Δ100%, +Δ108% and +Δ143% respectively, p < 0.04). Subsequent analyses examined whether statistically significant differences in participant characteristics, influenced immunological differences between groups. Compared to healthy women, survivors were older (56 ± 6 y vs. 45 ± 11 y), had lower cardiorespiratory fitness (V˙O2max mL kg-1 min-1: 28.8 ± 5.0 vs. 36.2 ± 8.5), lower lean mass (42.3 ± 5.0 kg vs. 48.4 ± 15.8 kg), higher body fat (36.3% ± 5.3% vs. 32.7% ± 6.4%) and higher fat mass index (FMI kg/m2: 9.5 ± 2.2 vs. 8.1 ± 2.7) (all p < 0.033). Analysis of covariance revealed divergent moderating effects of age, CMV serostatus, cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition on the differences in immune cell profiles between groups, depending on the cell type examined. Moreover, across all participants, fat mass index was positively associated with the proportion of HLA-DR+ CD4+ EMRA and CD8+ EM/EMRA T cells (Pearson correlation: r > 0.305, p < 0.019). The association between fat mass index and HLA-DR+ CD8+ EMRA T cells withstood statistical adjustment for all variables, including age, CMV serostatus, lean mass and cardiorespiratory fitness, potentially implicating these cells as contributors to inflammatory/immune-dysfunction in overweight/obesity.

Abstract
Elastin is a crucial extracellular matrix protein that provides structural integrity to tissues. Crosslinked elastin and associated microfibrils, named elastic fiber, contribute to biomechanics by providing the elasticity required for proper function. During aging and disease, elastic fiber can be progressively degraded and since there is little elastin synthesis in adults, degraded elastic fiber is not regenerated. There is substantial evidence linking loss or damage of elastic fibers to the clinical manifestation and pathogenesis of a variety of diseases. Disruption of elastic fiber networks by hereditary mutations, aging, or pathogenic stimuli results in systemic ailments associated with the production of elastin degradation products, inflammatory responses, and abnormal physiology. Due to its longevity, unique mechanical properties, and widespread distribution in the body, elastic fiber plays a central role in homeostasis of various physiological systems. While pathogenesis related to elastic fiber degradation has been more thoroughly studied in elastic fiber rich tissues such as the vasculature and the lungs, even tissues containing relatively small quantities of elastic fibers such as the eyes or joints may be severely impacted by elastin degradation. Elastic fiber degradation is a common observation in certain hereditary, age, and specific risk factor exposure induced diseases representing a converging point of pathological clinical phenotypes which may also help explain the appearance of co-morbidities. In this review, we will first cover the role of elastic fiber degradation in the manifestation of hereditary diseases then individually explore the structural role and degradation effects of elastic fibers in various tissues and organ systems. Overall, stabilizing elastic fiber structures and repairing lost elastin may be effective strategies to reverse the effects of these diseases.

Abstract
Growing evidence indicates the pathogenic role of autoreactive IgE in autoimmune diseases. Incidence of autoimmune and allergic diseases in the industrialized countries is consistently icreasing, thus leading to concerted efforts to comprehend the regulation of IgE-mediated mechanisms. The first reports of a presence of IgE autoantibodies in patients with autoimmune diseases have been published a long time ago, and it is now recognized that self-reactive IgE can mediate inflammatory response in bullous pemhigoid, systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic urticaria, and atopic dermatitis. The advances in understanding the pathomechanisms of these disorders brought to a successful use of anti-IgE strategies in their management. The present review discusses the current state of knowledge on the IgE-mediated autoimmunity and anti-IgE treatment, and pave the way for further exploration of the subject.

Abstract
Antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases (AAID) involve several isotypes of autoreactive antibodies. In a growing number of AAID, autoreactive IgE are present with a significant prevalence and are often associated with the presence of IgG anti-IgE and/or anti-FcεRIα (high affinity IgE receptor α chain). FcεRI-bearing cells, such as basophils or mast cells, are key players in some of these AAID. Recent advances in the pathophysiology of these diseases led to the passed or current development of anti-IgE strategies that showed very potent effects in some of them. The present review centralizes the information on the relevance of autoreactive IgE and FcεRI-bearing cells in the pathophysiology of different AAID and the ones where the anti-IgE therapeutic strategy shows or may show some benefits for the patients.

Abstract
Novel thermo-sensitive elastin-like recombinamers (ELRs) containing bioactive molecules were created for use as a biomimetic biomaterial for tissue regeneration. For effective use for in vivo applications, it is essential to ensure that they do not induce adverse inflammatory, immune, or allergic responses that inhibit tissue repair. Therefore, we sought to establish a pre-clinical approach to evaluate biocompatibility in experimental mice using ELRs as a prototype biomaterial. First, we measured in vitro proliferation and cytokine production from BALB/c and C57BL/6 mouse splenocytes incubated with ELRs. Second, we used a rapid, high throughput in vivo approach in which inflammatory cells and cytokines were measured following an intraperitoneal implantation. Lastly, a subchronic in vivo approach was used in which ELRs or positive controls were subcutaneously implanted and the implantation sites were assessed for inflammation and gene expression. We found that ELRs induced mild inflammation and minimal fibrosis compared to the intense response to Vitoss. Additionally, implantation increased antigen-specific antibody titers for both groups and gene expression profiling of the implantation sites revealed the upregulation of inflammation, fibrosis, and wound healing-related genes in ELR and positive control-implanted mice compared to sham controls. Abstract
Systemic scleroderma (SSc) is one of the most complex systemic autoimmune diseases. It targets the vasculature, connective tissue-producing cells (namely fibroblasts/myofibroblasts), and components of the innate and adaptive immune systems. Clinical and pathologic manifestations of SSc are the result of: (1) innate/adaptive immune system abnormalities leading to production of autoantibodies and cell-mediated autoimmunity, (2) microvascular endothelial cell/small vessel fibroproliferative vasculopathy, and (3) fibroblast dysfunction generating excessive accumulation of collagen and other matrix components in skin and internal organs. All three of these processes interact and affect each other. The disease is heterogeneous in its clinical presentation that likely reflects different genetic or triggering factor (i.e., infection or environmental toxin) influences on the immune system, vasculature, and connective tissue cells. The roles played by other ubiquitous molecular entities (such as lysophospholipids, endocannabinoids, and their diverse receptors and vitamin D) in influencing the immune system, vasculature, and connective tissue cells are just beginning to be realized and studied and may provide insights into new therapeutic approaches to treat SSc.

Abstract
The elastin metabolism in systemic sclerosis (SSc) has been known to be abnormal. The authors investigated relationship between the clinical manifestations of systemic sclerosis (SSc) and serum levels of soluble elastin-derived peptide (S-EDP) and anti-elastin antibodies. Serum samples were obtained from 79 patients with SSc and 79 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Concentrations of serum S-EDP and anti-elastin antibodies were measured by ELISA. The serum concentrations of S-EDP in SSc patients were significantly higher than in healthy controls (median, 144.44 ng/mL vs 79.59 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Serum EDP concentrations were found to be correlated with disease duration in SSc (P = 0.002) and particularly in diffuse cutaneous SSc (P = 0.005). Levels of anti-elastin antibodies were found to be more elevated in SSc patients than in healthy controls (median, 0.222 U vs 0.191 U, P = 0.049), more increased in diffuse cutaneous SSc than limited cutaneous SSc (median, 0.368 U vs 0.204 U, P = 0.031). In addition, levels of anti-elastin antibodies were also found to be negatively associated with presence of anti-centromere antibody (P = 0.023). The S-EDP levels were not found to be correlated with levels of anti-elastin antibodies. The increased S-EDP and anti-elastin antibody levels and association with clinical and laboratory characteristics may reflect the abnormal metabolism in SSc.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Early diagnosis and monitoring progression of chronic diseases in elastin-rich tissues, such as chronic progressive lymphoedema in draught horses and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is still a real challenge in the horse. Use of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect anti-elastin antibody (AEAb) levels might be useful to assess the status of such diseases. Baseline levels, representing physiological breakdown of elastin in normal horses, are not available at present. HYPOTHESIS Levels of AEAb in healthy horses are generally low and follow the same age-related pattern as found in man. Therefore, elevation of AEAb levels in serum can be used to evaluate pathological elastin breakdown in elastin-rich tissues. METHODS Sera of 84 clinically healthy Warmblood horses were evaluated for the presence of AEAbs by means of a modified version of an ELISA technique used in man. The horses were divided in 5 age groups: A) < 4 months; B) 4-23 months; C) 2-3 years; D) 4-10 years; and E) > 11 years. RESULTS Antibodies to elastin were found in all equine serum samples tested. Their levels were lowest in Group A, low in Groups B and E and highest in animals age 2-10 years. CONCLUSIONS Measuring AEAbs in serum of horses by an ELISA technique proved to be possible and levels were stable during well-defined life stages. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE Changes in AEAb levels are expected to be useful for early diagnosis and for monitoring progression of diseases that affect elastin-rich tissues, such as chronic progressive lymphoedema and COPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We have previously reported the optimized methods for the detection of elastin derived peptides (EDP) in the serum, synovial fluid, and bronchoalveolar lavage. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether EDP are detectable in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with acute brain ischaemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-seven first ever ischaemic stroke patients (mean age 61.5+/-10.8 years; age range 47-70 years; 12 women) were studied in acute phase (1-15 days after the onset) with clinical evaluations, radiological assessments, and the analysis of serum and CSF based on Western blot and ELISA for the detection and quantification of EDP. RESULTS None of the serum EDP concentrations are significantly higher in stroke patients compared with 25 healthy control individuals. However, EDP levels in CSF are strongly (p<0.0001) elevated compared with healthy subjects. They correlated with total cholesterol (r=0.53; p=0.02), triglycerides (r=0.67; p=0.004) and retinopathy (r=0.24; p=0.03), and with the interval between the stroke onset and the time of lumbar puncture (r=0.35; p=0.02). CONCLUSION EDPs are detectable in CSF of healthy subjects and patients with ischaemic stroke. Acute brain infarction is followed by increased levels of EDP in CSF.

Abstract
RATIONALE Adaptive immune responses are present in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and it has been postulated that these processes could be autoreactive. OBJECTIVES To ascertain if humoral autoimmunity could play a role in COPD pathogenesis. METHODS Circulating IgG autoantibodies were detected by immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were used to evaluate intrapulmonary IgG and complement (C3) deposition in human lung explants. Autoantibody pathogenicity was also investigated with an antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity assay. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The prevalence of anti-HEp-2 epithelial cell autoantibodies in 47 smokers/former smokers with COPD (GOLD stages 1-4) was greater than among 8 subjects with a smoking history but normal spirometry and 21 healthy control subjects who had never smoked (68 vs. 13 vs. 10%, respectively; P < 0.0001). Antibodies against primary pulmonary epithelial cells were found in 12 of 12 patients with COPD versus 3 of 12 never-smoked control subjects (P < 0.001). Self-antigens immunoprecipitated from 34 of 35 (97%) of COPD plasmas (vs. 0/12 never-smoked controls). Antibodies against a particular 130-kD autoantigen (n = 7) were associated with decreased body mass index (23.2 +/- 2.1 vs. 29.5 +/- 1.0 kg/m(2), P = 0.007). Intrapulmonary immune complexes were present in six of six and C3 was seen in five of six COPD lung explants, unlike zero of six and one of six normals, respectively. Cytotoxicity of pulmonary epithelial cells by allogeneic mononuclear cells also increased 46% after incubation with COPD plasmas (n = 10), compared with identical treatments with eight normal specimens (P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS IgG autoantibodies with avidity for pulmonary epithelium, and the potential to mediate cytotoxicity, are prevalent in patients with COPD. Autoreactive adaptive immune responses may be important in the etiology of this disease.

Abstract
Antibodies to alpha-elastin (elastin breakdown product) and elastin sequences devoid of cross-linked regions (linear elastin) are found in the serum of all human subjects and correlate with their respective serum peptide levels. The aim of this study was to determine if the serum level of antielastin antibodies (AEAbs) differs between type 1 diabetic children and nondiabetic children. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure the levels of immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM AEAbs in the sera of 45 diabetic children (mean age 12.8 +/- 3.2 years, diabetes duration 5.3 +/- 3.6 years). Twenty-two children presented with vascular complications (group 1), whereas 23 displayed no vascular complications (group 2). The controls were 18 healthy children (mean age 11.9 +/- 2.3 years). Diabetic patients showed statistically significant higher levels of IgM alpha-AEAbs (0.82 +/- 0.26 vs 0.61 +/- 0.14, p = .0013) than the control group. In group 1, alpha-AEAbs showed statistically significant higher level than controls: IgG (0.86 +/- 0.42 vs 0.59 +/- 0.12; p = .0109) and IgM (0.88 +/- 0.24 vs 0.61 +/- 0.14; p = .0001). IgM antilinear elastin antibodies (ALEAbs) in group 1 were significantly lower than in controls (0.462 +/- 0.191 vs 0.652 +/- 0.127; p = .0009). IgG alpha-AEAbs showed correlation with microalbuminuria (r = -.26; p = .05) and IgM ALEAbs correlated with microalbuminuria (r = -.32; p = .035). IgG alpha-AEAbs correlated with neuropathy (r = -.32; p = .035). Group 1 patients displayed a correlation between IgG ALEAbs and retinopathy (r = -.48; p = .023) and IgM ALEAbs and microalbuminuria (r = .52; p = .014). Levels of AEAbs and ALEAbs can serve as immunologic markers of the extent of elastin degradation. These markers may provide a tool to study elastin metabolism and a potential clinical role for AEAbs in the pathogenesis and development of vascular complications in diabetic children.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the frequency, phenotype, and functional profile of T lymphocytes that proliferate in response to type I collagen (CI) in patients with scleroderma (SSc). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from SSc patients, healthy controls, and rheumatoid arthritis disease controls were labeled with carboxy-fluorescein diacetate, succinimidyl ester (CFSE), cultured with or without antigen (bovine CI) for 14 days, and analysed by flow cytometry. Surface markers of proliferating cells were identified by multi-color flow cytometry. T-cell lines were derived after sorting for proliferating T cells (CFSElow). Cytokine expression in CI-responsive T cells was detected by intracellular staining/flow cytometry and by multiplex cytokine bead assay (Bio-Plex). A T-cell proliferative response to CI was detected in 8 of 25 (32%) SSc patients, but was infrequent in healthy or disease controls (3.6%; p = 0.009). The proliferating T cells expressed a CD4+, activated (CD25+), memory (CD45RO+) phenotype. Proliferation to CI did not correlate with disease duration or extent of skin involvement. T-cell lines were generated using in vitro CI stimulation to study the functional profile of these cells. Following activation of CI-reactive T cells, we detected intracellular interferon (IFN)-γ but not interleukin (IL)-4 by flow cytometry. Supernatants from the T-cell lines generated in vitro contained IL-2, IFN-γ, GM-CSF (granulocyte macrophage-colony-stimulating factor), and tumour necrosis factor-α, but little or no IL-4 and IL-10, suggesting that CI-responsive T cells express a predominantly Th1 cytokine pattern. In conclusion, circulating memory CD4 T cells that proliferate to CI are present in a subset of patients with SSc, but are infrequent in healthy or disease controls.

Abstract
PROBLEM The aim of this study was to investigate anti-elastin and anti-anti-elastin autoantibodies in intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) lots as an attempt to further explain the effect of IVIg in recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). METHOD OF STUDY Serum samples of 10 female patients with RPL and 10 healthy subjects were tested for anti-elastin autoantibodies and used in competitive inhibition studies. A total of 44 IVIg lots (ZLB Behring, Switzerland) were tested for anti-elastin and anti-anti-elastin idiotypes. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Least Significant Difference (LSD method) were used for statistical analysis of differences between the lots. RESULTS Serum anti-elastin IgG autoantibodies were significantly higher in the study group, compared to the controls. In all lots anti-elastin IgG antibodies were identified. All lots (except two of them) showed similar dose-dependent inhibition of serum anti-elastin activity by anti-elastin anti-idiotypes in IVIg. CONCLUSIONS Anti-elastin IgG autoantibodies were increased in patients with RPL - a finding which needs further explanation. Anti-elastin and anti-anti-elastin idiotypes were identified in different IVIg lots. The presence in IVIg of anti-idiotypes against anti-elastin autoantibodies from patients' sera could be an additional mechanism of the beneficial effect of IVIg in reproductive failure.

Abstract
The effect of cobalt on the cardiovascular system is one of many aspects of cobalt metabolism in humans. Elastin and collagen are the main proteins of the vascular wall. The aims of this study were: 1) to determine serum cobalt concentrations in children with hypertension; and 2) to study the correlation between serum cobalt and some biological markers of the extracellular matrix of the vascular wall, i.e., anti-elastin and anti-collagen type IV antibodies. Patients showed statistically significant higher levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and significantly lower serum cobalt concentrations, than controls. Children with hypertension showed significantly higher levels of total cholesterol (P = 0.0003) and collagen type IV IgM (P = 0.04). Collagen type IV IgG levels (P = 0.027) were lower than in controls. Serum cobalt in patients showed a correlation with systolic blood pressure (r = -0.44, P = 0.05), elastin IgM (r = 0.60, P = 0.007), and collagen type IV IgG (r = -0.46, P = 0.04). Our data suggest the existence of a correlation between changes in levels of serum cobalt, total cholesterol, anti-collagen type IV antibodies, and essential hypertension in children. This is the first study of serum cobalt in children with essential hypertension.

Abstract
Antibodies to elastin breakdown products are found in the serum of all human subjects and correlate with their respective serum peptide levels. The presence of these antielastin antibodies (AEAbs) and the corresponding antigens in circulation leads to the formation of circulating immune complexes (CICs). The aim of this study was to determine if the serum levels of free AEAbs (not bound in CICs) correlate with the development of vascular complications in diabetic children. To this end, we used a method for detecting immune complexes (complement inhibition factor [CIF]-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA]) in combination with an ELISA for detection of AEAbs. The levels of free immunoglobulin G (IgG) AEAbs were studied in the sera of 54 diabetic children (mean age 12.3+/-4 years; diabetes duration 5.2+/-3.7 years). Thirty-two of the children had vascular complications (group 1), and 22 were without vascular complications (group 2). Twenty healthy children (mean age 13.6+/-4.2 years) were used as controls. The diabetics showed statistically significant higher levels of free AEAbs (0.490 E492+/-0.244 E492 vs 0.307 E492+/-0.081 E492; p = .02) compared with the control group. In group 1, free AEAbs showed statistically significant higher levels than controls (0.523+/-0.269 vs 0.307+/-0.081; p = .016). Eighteen of 54 (33%) patients were positive for free AEAbs (13 of 32 [41%] in group 1 and 5 of 22 [22%] in group 2). Free AEAb levels in all diabetics showed a correlation with systolic blood pressure (r = .44; p = .01), diastolic blood pressure (r = .46; p = .009), total cholesterol (r = .33; p = .05), triglycerides (r= .38; p = .03), high-density lipoprotein (r= -.46; p = .009), serum fructose (r= .43; p = .001), and microalbuminuria (r= .41; p = .002). Patients who had vascular pathology showed a correlation of free AEAbs with microalbuminuria (r= .434; p= .026), serum fructose (r= .63; p = .0004), hemoglobin A1c (r= .392; p = .043), and triglycerides (r= .456; p = .025). These findings suggest that elevated levels of free IgG AEAbs are associated with the development of diabetic vascular complications in children.

Abstract
Thickening of basement membrane in capillaries and small vessels is a well-known finding and important in the progression of diabetic microangiopathy. To monitor the metabolism of the basement membrane protein collagen type IV (CIV) in diabetes mellitus, serum levels of IgG, IgM and IgA to CIV were measured using an ELISA method in 28 children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus over a period of 6 years. These values were compared to serum antibodies to CIV in 24 age- and sex-matched controls. At the end of the study, 11 children had diabetic microangiopathy. IgG to CIV was associated with age (r = .33, P = .026), diabetes duration (r = .32, P = .021), HbA1c (r = .31, P = .019), microalbuminuria (r = .32, P = .022) and anti-AGE antibodies (r = .47, P = .0007). IgM to CIV correlated with age (r = .46, P = .001), diabetes duration (r = .45, P = .001), HbA1c (r = .26, P = .038) and anti-AGE antibodies (r = .26, P = .038) and IgA to CIV with triglycerides (r = .29, P = .038) and anti-AGE antibodies (r = .44, P = .0025). We suggest that serum levels of IgG to CIV can be used as a marker for the development of diabetic microalbuminuria.

Abstract
An important factor in the development of vascular wall alterations is degradation of the elastic fiber major protein-elastin. Elastin peptides derived from this degradation are present in the circulating blood and they are a stimulus for increased production of anti-elastin antibodies (AEAb). The aim of the present study was to examine the possible association between serum elastin AEAb and the development of diabetic vascular complications. Levels of AEAb (IgG, IgM and IgA) were determined by ELISA in sera of 28 children with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (mean age 11.6+/-2.8 years, diabetes duration 5.1+/-2.5 years). None of the children had clinical or laboratory evidence of vascular complications. The children were followed over a period of 7 years, and 24 healthy children of similar age and sex served as a control group. During the study, four diabetics developed retinopathy, six microalbuminuria and two both retinopathy and microalbuminuria. Anti-elastin IgG showed correlation with diabetes duration (r=.48, P=.0007), HbA1c (r=.28, P=.05), triglycerides (r=.28, P=.05) and antibodies to advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) (r=.41, P=.005). Anti-elastin IgM correlated with HbA1c (r=.26, P=.038) and IgA with retinopathy (r=.32, P=.017). Our results suggest an association between the level of anti-elastin IgA antibodies and the development of diabetic retinopathy.
